[0048] In FIG. 1A, the second communication device 120 may transmit an ambient IoT signal to the first communication device 110. The second communication device 120 may be a network device such as a base station, a relay, or an IAB device, a terminal device such as UE, or any other suitable device. The first communication device 110 may perform a backscattering transmission based on the ambient IoT signal. For example, the first communication device 110 may collect or harvest energy from the ambient IoT signal and use the collected energy to transmit the backscattering transmission. As used herein, the term “ambient IoT signal” may be referred to as an “ambient IoT data” , “ambient IoT signaling” , “harvesting signal” , “carrier wave (CW) ” , “inventory signal” , or “command” . The ambient IoT signal may be a physical layer (PHY) signal.

[0049] In embodiments where the second communicate device 120 being a network device such as a base station, the first communication device 110 may directly and bidirectionally communicate with the base station. The topology of the first communication device 110 and the second communication device 120 shown in FIG. 1A may be referred to as a “Topology 1” .

[0050] FIG. 1B illustrates a schematic diagram of another example communication environment 150 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. Similar to FIG. 1A, in the communication environment 150, the first communication device 110 communicates with the second communication device 120. For example, the second communication device 120 may transmit an ambient IoT signal to the first communication device 110, and receive a backscattering transmission from the first communication device 110.

[0051] Different from FIG. 1A, in FIG. 1B, the second communication device 120 may be  an intermediate device (also referred to as an intermediate node) which communicates with a further communicate device such as a fourth communication device 160 for example via Uu interface. The fourth communication device 160 may be a network device such as a base station or a terminal device. The fourth communication device 160 may serve the second communication device 120. For example, the fourth communication device 160 may transmit a signal to the second communication device 120. The second communication device 120 may transmit the ambient IoT signal to the first communication device 110 based on the signal from the fourth communication device 160. The second communication device 120 may receive a backscattering transmission from the first communication device 110 and forward the backscattering transmission to the fourth communication device 160. By way of example, the fourth communication device 160 may be a relay, an IAB node, a UE, a repeater, or any suitable device supporting ambient IoT.

[0052] In this way, the first communication device 110 such as an ambient IoT may communicate bidirectionally with the immediate node between the ambient IoT device and the third communication device such as the base station. The topology of the first communication device 110, the second communication device 120 and the fourth communication device 160 shown in FIG. 1B may be referred to as a “Topology 2” .

[0053] As used herein, the second communication device 120 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B may also be referred to as a “ambient IoT device reader” , “passive device reader” , “IoT device reader” “reader” , “reader for the first communication device 110” . The second communication device 120 may support one or more ambient IoT device (s) . The second communication device 1230 may operate as a UE and be referred to as “UE reader” , or may operate as a radio access network (RAN) node and be referred to as an ambient RAN (A-RAN) , or an A-RAN reader. The fourth communication device 160 in FIG. 1B may also be referred to as an A-RAN node or an A-RAN node serving the reader. It is to be understood that the number of devices as shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B is for purpose of illustration without any limitation. In embodiments of the present disclosure, there may be more or less devices.

[0054] In some example embodiments, a link from the second communication device 120 to the first communication device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the first communication device 110 to the second communication device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second communication device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the first communication device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the first communication device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the second  communication device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0055] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0056] In the communication environ 100 or the communication environment 150, several use cases on ambient IoT are supported. An example use case may be a use case of indoor inventory such as a use case on ambient IoT on automated warehousing. Specifically, for such use case, when the goods are placed on shelves in the warehouse and have been stored for a certain period of time, the management platform starts the indoor inventory task periodically for double check of the goods (total goods or per different batch / group) , and generates a list of tags to be inventoried, sends the list to the 5G network. The 5G network receives the list and sends large-scale / specified inventory signals. The Ambient IoT device in the 5G network coverage may establish communication with the network. The 5G network may interact with the corresponding devices according to the inventory requirements to obtain goods information. The 5G network may send the acquired goods information to the management platform. During these procedures, the read operation may involve device-originated (DO) device-terminated triggered (DTT) traffic.

[0057] Another use case may be for indoor command, such as a use case on online modification of medical instruments status. In such use case, through 5G network and the IoT device, the medical instrument information (such as the serial number of the instrument, usage status, usage records, years of use, integrity, or the like) may be remotely read, modified and written by the medical instrument management platform. During these procedures, the write or modifying operation may involve a device-terminated (DT) traffic, and the read operation may involve a DO-DTT traffic.

[0058] It is to be understood that these described use cases are only for purpose of illustration,  without suggesting any limitation. Any suitable use case may be supported by embodiments of the present disclosure. Scope of the present disclosure is not limited here.

[0059] FIG. 2 illustrates a schematic diagram of another example communication environment 200 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 200, the first communication device 110, the second communication device 120 and / or the fourth communication device 160 (not shown) may communicate with a core network (CN) via a third communication device 230. The third communication device 230 may be a CN function supporting AIoT services. In some embodiments, the third communication device 230 may be with an access and mobility management function (AMF) . Alternatively, or in addition, the third communication device 230 may be part of an AMF or integrated with the AMF. As used herein, the third communication device 230 may be referred to as a “CN function” , a “CN function with AIoT function” , “ambient IoT function (AIOTF) ” , an “AMF” , or “AMF with ambient IoT’s functionalities integrated” .

[0060] In some embodiments, the communication environment 200 may include additional CN nodes or functions, such as a charging function (CHF) 240, an application function (AF) 250 / access stratum (AS) , an authentication service function (AUSF) 260, a network exposure function (NRF 280) , a network function repository function (NRF) 280, a unified data management (UDM) 290, or the like. It is to be understood that there may be more or less CN nodes or functions in the communication environment 200.

[0061] In some embodiments, the third communication device 230 may provide at least one of the following function or services: connectivity to the second communication device 120 such as A-RAN; AIoT functionality supporting such as inventory handing and device context management, authentication and authorization for the access, which triggers interaction with AUSF 260 or UDM 290; collecting charging data and interact with CHF 240 for charging; routing the request from AF / AS 250 (via NEF 270) to the second communication device 120, for device-originated device-terminated triggered (DO-DTT) traffic type or device-terminated (DT) traffic types; routing the response from the second communication device 120 to AF / AS 250 (via NEF 270) for DO-DTT traffic type.

[0062] A procedure of a functionality of the first communication device 110 may involve the first communication device 110, the second communication device 120, the third communication device 230, and optionally one or more CN nodes or functions in the communication environment 200. As used herein, the term “functionality” of the first  communication device 110 may also be referred to as an “application” or “service” of the first communication device 110, or an “ambient IoT functionality” , “ambient IoT application” , or “ambient IoT service” . Taking the inventory functionality as an example, the inventory procedure may be triggered by the AF 250 sending an inventory request towards the CN such as the third communication device 230, and the CN such as the third communication device 230 sends a request to the second communication device 120 such as an A-RAN. The first communication device 110 may respond to the inventory request from the second communication device 120 such as the A-RAN and send its device ID. Such inventory procedure triggered by the AF 250 may be called application inventory procedure. In some embodiments, a plurality of first communication devices such as AIoT devices may follow such inventory procedure. In other words, inventory means to determine the identity of all or a subset of AIoT Devices in range of a reader.

[0063] In some mechanisms, an example application inventory procedure may be as follows.

[0064] Step 1. The AF sends Inventory Message Request to the NEF, containing the area information, device information, optional inventory strategy information, and optional report aggregation info. The area information could be the external geographical area information. The device information could be device ID, device group ID, and / or device type. The inventory strategy information contains, e.g. the inventory frequency and inventory period to guide the readers to perform the inventory periodically. It also indicates whether all the targeted devices need to respond (full inventory) , or only those who haven't performed the inventory procedure (delta inventory) should respond. The location required indicates whether the AF requests the location information of the AIoT devices provided. The report aggregation info indicates whether the reports need to be aggregated or not for a specific aggregation period, and whether the reports are needed after the aggregation period.

[0065] Step 2. The NEF authorizes the request from the AF and perform the area translation to translate external area information to the internal area information. Within the authorization, the NEF further check whether the AF is authorized to get the location information of the device.

[0066] Step 3. The NEF sends NRF query with internal area information to query AIOTFs serving the area.

[0067] Step 4. The NEF sends the Inventory Request to the AIOTFs with the internal area information, device information and optionally inventory strategy information, optional location required information.

[0068] Step 5. The AIOTF discovers A-RANs based on internal area information.

[0069] Step 6. The AIOTF sends an NGAP message (Inventory Request) to the A-RANs with the internal area information, device information and inventory strategy information, and optional location required information.

[0070] Step 7. The A-RAN (reader) initiates inventory based on device information as well as the information provided by the AF. The A-RAN may provide reader identity information (e.g. A-RAN inventory strategy ID) to enable the AIoT devices to understand they are read by which A-RAN node.

[0071] Step 8. The AIoT Device reports the device ID, and optional device capability information. If the Inventory procedure indicates only who haven't performed the inventory procedure should respond, and if the AIoT Device has performed the inventory procedure towards this A-RAN node, it should skip the reporting.

[0072] Step 9. The A-RAN sends an NGAP message (Inventory Response or Inventory Notify) to the AIOTF, containing the device ID and the optional device capability information provided by the device. The A-RAN may further provide location information (ULI) of the device, if requested from the AIOTF and allowed by local policy. The A-RAN may further provide an end indicator to inform the AIOTF whether it is the last inventory response for the inventory round.

[0073] Step 10. The AIOTF validates the device ID via interacting with AUSF and UDM. The AIOTF may further check the device capability information from the device subscription data stored in the UDM for the device capability information. Based on the device capability info from the device and / or device information data in UDM, if the AIoT device is capable of handling authentication and authorization, step 11 -step 13 are executed:

[0074] Step 11. The AIOTF together with AUSF and UDM, triggers authentication and authorization procedures towards the AIoT device.

[0075] Step 12. The AIOTF may further allocates CN device ID and sends to the AIoT device.

[0076] Step 13. The AIOTF registers with the UDM (UECM) for the device access.

[0077] Step 14. The AIOTF may perform aggregation for the device ID, based on the report aggregation information provided by the AF. Within the aggregation period, the AIOTF will buffer the device IDs reported from the AIoT devices. The AIOTF may stop buffering and send report immediately, if it receives end indicator from A-RAN in step 9. When the aggregation  period expires, the AIOTF sends the report. For those device ID report after the aggregation period, if it is needed by the AF, the AIOTF sends the report. Otherwise, it will be dropped.

[0078] Step 15. The AIOTF sends Inventory Response or Notification Request towards the NEF for the device ID or the aggregated device ID information.

[0079] Step 16. The NEF sends Inventory Response or Notification Request towards the AF for the device ID or the aggregated device ID information.

[0080] In some mechanisms, the AIOTF or the A-RAN may initiate the periodic inventory procedure based on the inventory strategy information provided by the AF, to enable the AIoT devices to be discovered when they newly enter the coverage area. An example procedure may be as follows.

[0081] Step 0. An Inventory Procedure may have taken place resulted in inventory strategy information stored in the AIOTF. e.g. inventory frequency.

[0082] The step 1 -step 11 are similar as the inventory procedure described above, with the following additions:

[0083] Step 1. It will be performed only when it is AIOTF to initiate the periodic inventory. The inventory strategy should be set to delta inventory.

[0084] Step 2. It can be performed without step 1, if it is A-RAN who initiates the periodic inventory. The inventory strategy should be set to delta inventory.

[0085] Step 3. The AIOT device responds if it hasn't been "inventoried" . Using the reader identity information (e.g. A-RAN ID) over the air, AIOT device determines if it is being read by a new A-RAN node and responds the inventory. The device may provide CN allocated device ID if it received before.

[0086] Step 6. Can be skipped if the AIOTF finds AIoT device has performed the authentication and authorization with the network, based on CN allocated device ID.

[0087] Step 7. Can be skipped if the AIOTF decides not to allocate a new CN allocated device ID by local policy.

[0088] Step 8. Can be skipped if the AIOTF has registered towards UDM.

[0089] Step 9. The AIOTF may use the aggregation period provided by the AF, or a locally configured value or even skip the aggregation, based on local policy. If the AIoT device responds the inventory procedure due to the A-RAN is a new reader, the device ID may not be  sent to AF via NEF, unless AF requires the location information.

[0090] Step 10. The AIOTF sends Inventory Notify Request towards the NEF for the device ID or the aggregated device ID information.

[0091] Step 11. The NEF sends Inventory Notify Request towards the AF for the device ID or the aggregated device ID information.

[0092] Several example mechanisms for inventory procedures have been described. To sum up, these functionality procedures for an ambient IoT device such as the inventory procedures may involve a plurality of devices such as the ambient IoT device, the reader such as UE or gNB, the CN function such as AIoTF and the AF. However, such functionality procedures still need to be simplified. For example, the AIoT device may send an inventory response message once it receives an inventory request message from reader. However, it may have been requested by the same device or in a specific area or time period. That is, these inventory procedures may involve duplicate responses from the AIoT device to the reader.

[0093] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for a functionality procedure of a communication device such as an A-IoT device. In the solution, a second communication device such as a reader for an ambient IoT device transmit a request for a functionality of the first communication device, the request comprising at least one of: area information for the functionality, or a value tag associated with the request. In response to receiving the request, the first communication device determines whether at least one condition associated with the request is satisfied. If the at least one condition is satisfied, the first communication device transmits, to the second communication device via backscattering, a response to the request. In this way, the first communication device can determine whether to response to the request from the second communication device based on the at least one condition. The duplicate transmission of the response such as inventory response can thus be avoided.

[0094] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0095] Reference is made to FIG. 3, which illustrates a signaling flow 300 of backscattering transmission in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A and / or FIG. 1B. In the following description, some embodiments will be described with the functionality of the first communication device 110 being an inventory functionality.

[0096] In operation, the second communication device 120 transmits (310) , to the first communication device 110, a request for a functionality of the first communication device 110. The request includes at least one of: area information for the functionality, or a value tag associated with the request. The first communication device 110 receives (320) the request. The request may be an ambient IoT signal or ambient IoT data or signaling. The request may be also referred to as an “functionality request” or “functionality request message” . In embodiments where the functionality includes an inventory functionality, the request may be referred to as “inventory request” or “inventory request message” . In another embodiments where the functionality includes a command functionality, the request may be referred to as “command (request) ” or “command (request) message” .

[0097] The first communication device 110 determines (330) whether at least one condition associated with the request is satisfied. For example, the first communication device 110 may determine (330) whether the at least one condition is satisfied at least in part based on the request. If the at least one condition is satisfied, the first communication device 110 transmits (340) a response to the request to the second communication device 120 via backscattering. The second communication device 120 receives (350) the response. If the at least one condition is not satisfied, the first communication device 110 may not transmit the response to the second communication device 120. As used herein, the term “response” may be referred to as a “response message” , “backscattering response” or “backscattering message” . In embodiments where the functionality includes an inventory functionality, the response may be referred to as “inventory response” or “inventory response message” .

[0098] By transmitting the response based on the at least one condition being satisfied, the duplicate transmission of the response can be avoided. The signaling overhead can thus be reduced.

[0099] In some embodiments, the request may further include identification information of the first communication device 110 such as device identification (ID) of the first communication device 110. Alternatively, or in addition, the request may further include an indication of a change of information associated with the functionality (also referred to as a change of functionality information) . By way of example, the functionality may be an inventory functionality, and the indication of the change include an indication of delta inventory.

[0100] As mentioned, the first communication device 110 determines (330) whether at least one condition associated with the request is satisfied. Several examples of the at least one condition will now be described. In some embodiments, the request includes the value tag. The at least one condition may include a first condition that the value tag is received for the first time. That is, the value tag in the request is not received by the first communication device 110 before receiving the request. In other words, if the first communication device 110 receives the request with the value tag (such as Values Tag#1) for the first time, the first communication device 110 may transmit (340) the response to the second communication device 120. That is, the first communication device 110 hasn’ t performed the functionality procedure such as the inventory procedure or sent the response for a functionality request with this value tag.

[0101] The at least one condition may include a second condition that the value tag is different from a further value tag in an ambient IoT signal received before the request. For example, if the first communication device 110 receives the request with another value tag (for example, Value Tag#2) which is different from a previously received Value Tag#1, or if the value tag in the request changes, the first communication device 110 may transmit (340) the response to the second communication device 120. For example, if the value tag is rolled-over or reversed, it means that the value tag changes. For another example, if the value of the value tag changes, it means that the value tag changes. By way of example, the value tag may be a new data indicator of a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) , a value tag of a system information block (SIB) , or any other suitable value tag.

[0102] In some embodiments, if the first or the second condition is not satisfied, the first communication device 110 may not transmit the response. If the value tag in the request is same with a further value tag received before the request, the first communication device 110 may determine (330) to not transmit the response to the second communication device 120. For example, if the first communication device 110 has received an ambient IoT signal such as a previous request with a same value tag, the first communication device 110 may not send the response to the second communication device 120. As used herein, not sending the response such as the Inventory Response message means skip the procedure of sending the response such as the Inventory Response message.

[0103] Several conditions associated with the value tag in the request have been described. In some embodiments, the value tag may be an integer in a predetermined format. A possible predetermined format may be 0, 1, 0, 1, ..., (N%2) , N being an integer.  That is, the value tag changes from 0 to 1, and then from 1 to 0 for different requests. Another possible predetermined format may be 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... N. It is to be understood that the predetermined format may be in any suitable form. In another embodiment, the value tag may be a time flag, such as a time period identification or frame number. In a further embodiment, the value tag may be a sequence number. It is to be understood that these examples of value tag are only for the purposes of illustration, without suggesting any limitations. Any suitable value tag may be applied.

[0104] In some embodiments, the updating of the value tag may be performed based on the configuration of functionality such as inventory configuration from the second communication device 120 such as gNB and / or the third communication device 230 and / or AF 250. For example, the second communication device 120 may update the value tag based on the functionality configuration from the third communication device 230.

[0105] Alternatively, or in addition, in some embodiments, the request includes the area information, such as at least one area ID for AIoT service or functionality. In an example, the area information may be indicated by part of identifier information of the second communication device 120. For example, the identification information such as reader ID of the second communication device 120 may include two parts, a first part may be an area ID, and the second part may be a reader unique ID. The area information may include the first part of the reader ID of the second communication device 120. In another example, the area information may include wherein the area information comprises an area ID of the second communication device 120. In a further example, the area information may include an area ID for a list of second communication devices (such as, an area ID is in the form of a list of identifier information of second communication devices) . The second communication device 120 or the list of second communication devices may be preconfigured with at least one area ID. For example, some readers in a same place may be configured with the same area ID.

[0106] The at least one condition may be associated with the area information such as the area ID in the request. For example, a third condition may be that the area information is received for the first time. If the first communication device 110 receives (320) the request with the area ID (such as Area ID #1) for the first time, the first communication device 110 may transmit (340) the response to the second communication device 120. That is, if the first communication device 110 has not performed the functionality procedure such as the inventory procedure or sent response for the request in the same  area or for the same area ID, the first communication device 110 may transmit (340) the response.

[0107] A fourth condition may be that the area information is different from further arear information in an ambient IoT signal received before the request. For example, if the first communication device 110 receives the request with another area ID (such as Area ID #2) which is different from a previously received area ID, the first communication device 110 may transmit (340) the response to the second communication device 120.

[0108] In some embodiments, if the area information in the request is same with a further area information such as area ID received before the request, the first communication device 110 may determine (330) to not transmit the response to the second communication device 120. For example, if the first communication device 110 has received a previous ambient IoT signal or request with the same area ID, the first communication device 110 may not transmit (340) the response to the second communication device 120. That is, the first communication device 110 has performed the functionality procedure or sent the response for the request in the same area or for the same area ID.

[0109] In some example embodiments, the request may include the value tag, the area information, the device ID and an indication of a change of functionality information such as an indication of delta inventory. The at least one condition may be based on a combination of the above items in the request. By way of example, a fifth condition may be that an indication of a change of information associated with the functionality is included in the request.

[0110] In an embodiment, if the first communication device 110 receives the request such as the Inventory Request message with the same Area ID and the indication of delta inventory, the first communication device 110 may not send the response such as the Inventory Response message. That is, the first communication device 110 may skip the procedure of sending the response such as the Inventory Response message.

[0111] In an embodiment, if the first communication device 110 receives the request such as the Inventory Request message with another Area ID (e.g., Area ID #2) and / or the indication of delta inventory, the first communication device 110 may send response such as the Inventory Response message.

[0112] In an embodiment, if the first communication device 110 receives a request such as an Inventory Request message with the same Area ID and the same Value Tag (e.g., tag#2) , the first communication device 110 may not send the response such as an Inventory Response message.

[0113] In an embodiment, if the first communication device 110 receives the request such as an Inventory Request message with another Area ID (e.g., Area ID #2) and / or another Value Tag (e.g., tag#2) , the first communication device 110 may send the response such as an Inventory Response message.

[0114] It is to be understood that these conditions are only for purposes of illustration, without suggesting any limitations. Any suitable condition may be applied for the transmission of the response. These conditions may be applied separately, or in any combination. Scope of embodiments of the present disclosure is not limited here.

[0115] In some embodiments, the response may include control information of the first communication device 110. As used herein, the term “control information” may also be referred to as “access control information” , “inventory (control) information” , “command information” , “authentication / security / registration (control) information” , or the like. The term “access procedure” may refer to an “inventory / command procedure” or an “authentication / security / registration procedure” . The at least one condition described above may be used for the transmission of the control information.

[0116] By way of example, the control information may include at least one of: an access type of the first communication device 110, a type of the first communication device 110, identification information of the first communication device 110 such as the device ID of the first communication device 110, security information of the first communication device 110, authentication information of the first communication device 110, or energy information of the first communication device 110.

[0117] In some embodiments, the control information may include all of the above items, that is, the indication of access type, the type of the first communication device 110, the capability of the first communication device 110, the identifier information of the first communication device 110, the security / authentication information and the energy information. Such control information may be referred to as “full control information” . Alternatively, in some embodiments, the full information may include at least one of the above items, such as the identifier information of the first communication device 110, or  at least two of the above items such as identifier information and the access type or traffic type of the first communication device 110. The full access control information may be defined by the specification or configured by the second communication device 120 and / or the third communication device 230 and / or AF 250.

[0118] For the control information at least excluding one item from the full control information, the control information may be referred to as “partial control information” or “partial of the (full) control information” . For example, the partial control information may at least include the identifier information of the first communication device 110.

[0119] In some example embodiments, the access type may also be referred to as traffic type or access type corresponding to traffic type or application or functionality. In an embodiment, the access type indicates a type of DO autonomous (DO-A) traffic or DO-DTT traffic. Alternatively, or in addition, the access type may indicate a type of inventory functionality, sensors functionality, positioning functionality, or command functionality. The access type may alternatively or additionally indicate the traffic type of medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) or MAC service data unit (SDU) for at least one of: the backscattering transmission, or a further backscattering transmission subsequent to the backscattering transmission.

[0120] The type of the first communication device 110 may be referred to as a device type, device capability or device category, such as Type A, B, C or the like. The device ID may be an ID of ambient IoT device, such as ID for a tag. The security information or authentication information of the first communication device 110 may be used to verify the first communication device 110 or protect the data or the backscattering transmission.

[0121] In an embodiment, the energy information may include a first energy level obtained by an energy harvesting procedure, for example, for a Device A. In another embodiment, the energy information may include a second energy level available in a battery of the first communication device, for example for a Device B. In a further embodiment, the energy information may include a third energy level for leftover traffic or a next transmission. In some embodiments, the energy information may include at least one of the first, second or third energy level. As used herein, the term “energy information” may also be referred to as “ (energy) harvesting information” or “battery information” .

[0122] In some embodiments, the energy information may include an energy level format. For example, the energy level format may be a format of an original energy level  value. For another example, the energy level format may be a format of a quantified energy level value. The quantification approach for the energy level may be predefined or configured. At least one of the first, second or third energy level may be in the energy level format in the energy information.

[0123] In a further embodiment, the energy information may include a quantity or level of electricity. For example, the energy level may be referred to as the (level of) quantity of electricity.

[0124] In some embodiments, the energy information may include a transmission related status of the first communication device 110. For example, the transmission related status may include a transmission mode of the first communication device 110.

[0125] Several example embodiments regarding the control information and the full control information have been described. It is to be understood that these embodiments are only for purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitations. These embodiments may be applied separately, or in any combination. That is, the control information may include one or more items described above. Scope of the present disclosure is not limited here.

[0126] In some embodiments, the response may include full control information of the first communication device 110. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the response may include partial of the full control information. The first communication device 110 may determine whether to include the full control information or the partial control information in the response based on at least one of the above conditions for transmitting the response.

[0127] In some embodiments, if the at least one condition is satisfied, the first communication device 110 may transmit the full control information to the second communication device 120 via backscattering. For example, the full control information may be included in the response, or any other suitable backscattering transmission. If the at least one condition is not satisfied, the first communication device 110 may transmit the partial control information to the second communication device 120 via backscattering.

[0128] By way of example, if the value tag or the area information in the request is same with a further value tag or further area information received before the request, the first communication device 110 may transmit partial of the full control information to the second communication device 120 via backscattering.

[0129] In some embodiments, if the first communication device 110 receives an Inventory Request message with the Area ID (e.g., Area ID #1) or Value Tag (#1) , for the first time, the first communication device 110 may send an Inventory Response message with full control information.

[0130] In some embodiments, if the first communication device 110 receives an Inventory Request message with another Area ID (e.g., Area ID #2) or Value Tag (#2) , the first communication device 110 may send Inventory Response message with full control information.

[0131] In some embodiments, if the first communication device 110 has received an Inventory Request message with the same Area ID (e.g., Area ID #1) or same Value Tag (#1) , the first communication device 110 may send Inventory Response message with partial control information. That is, the first communication device 110 may not send an Inventory Response message with full control information.

[0132] Several embodiments regarding transmitting the response to the request for a functionality procedure and regarding transmitting the full or partial control information have been described. With these embodiments, duplicate responses from the first communication device 110 to the second communication device 120 can be avoided. Thus, the signaling overhead can be reduced. In addition, by transmitting the partial control information instead of full control information in some cases, the signaling overhead can be reduced. In this way, the complexity of AIoT device can be reduced with the request (that is, a single indication) . A more efficient functionality procedure such as inventory procedure can be achieved.

[0133] As briefly mentioned, although some works have been studied for the functionality procedure of the ambient IoT device, the functionality procedure still needs to be enhanced. For example, the AIoT device may send an Inventory Response message once it receives an Inventory Request message from reader. However, it may have been requested by the same reader and the reader may have sent the information, such as device ID, received via any one of multiple Inventory Response messages to the CN function / node.

[0134] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide another solution for a functionality procedure for a communication device such as an ambient IoT device. In the solution, a second communication device such as a reader or a network node serving the reader transmits, to at least one first communication device such as at least one ambient  IoT device, a request for at least one identification information of the at least one first communication device, the request being associated with a functionality of the at least one first communication device. The second communication device receives at least one response to the request from the at least one first communication device via backscattering, the at least one response including the at least one identification information. Based on at least one condition associated with the at least one identification information being satisfied, the second communication device transmits, to a third communication device such as a CN node, an acknowledgement message of the functionality, the acknowledgement message comprising the at least one identification information of the at least one first communication device.

[0135] In this way, the transmission of the acknowledgement message of the functionality can be controlled based on the at least one condition. The signaling overhead can thus be reduced.

[0136] FIG. 4 illustrates another signaling flow 400 of backscattering transmission in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 400 may involve a second communication device 402, which may be the second communication device 120 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B or the fourth communication device 160 in FIG. 1B.

[0137] In operation, the second communication device 402transmits (410) , to at least one first communication device 110, a request for at least one identification information of the at least one first communication device 110. The request is associated with a functionality of the at least one first communication device 110. By way of example, the request may be an inventory request. The first communication device 110 receives (420) the request.

[0138] In some embodiments, the request may include area information for the functionality. Alternatively, or in addition, the request may include a value tag associated with the request.

[0139] In some embodiments, the area information comprises one of: part of identifier information of at least one reader for the at least one first communication device 110. For example, the identifier information of the reader includes a first part of area ID and a second part of reader unique ID. The area information may include the first part of the identifier information, that is, the area ID. In another embodiment, the area information may include at least one area identification of the at least one reader configured for the functionality. In a further example, the area information may include an area ID for a list  of readers in a corresponding location, such as an area ID is in the form of a list of identifier information of second communication devices. The list of readers may be preconfigured with at least one area ID. For example, some readers in a same place may be configured with the same area ID. In some embodiments, the second communication device 402 may be a reader such as the second communication device 120 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B. Alternatively, the second communication device 402may be a network node serving the at least one reader, such as the fourth communication device 160 in FIG. 1B.

[0140] The first communication device 110 transmits (430) at least one response to the request to the second communication device 402 via backscattering. The at least one response includes the at least one identification information. The second communication device 402receives (440) the at least one response.

[0141] The second communication device 402determines (450) whether at least one condition associated with the at least one identification information is satisfied. If the at least one condition is satisfied, the second communication device 402 transmits (460) , to the third communication device 230, an acknowledgement message of the functionality. The third communication device 230 receives (470) the acknowledgement message. The acknowledgement message includes the at least one identification information (also referred to as received identification information) of the at least one first communication device 110 such as at least one device ID of the at least one first communication device 110. In embodiments wherein the request being an inventory request, the acknowledgement message may be an inventory acknowledgement message.

[0142] In some embodiments, the at least one condition may include a first condition that the at least one identification information in the at least one response is received for the first time. The at least one condition may include a second condition that the at least one identification information is not reported to the third communication device 230. The at least one condition may include a third condition that the at least one identification information is not reported to the third communication device 230 during a time period. The at least one condition may include a fourth condition that the at least one identification information is not acknowledged by the third communication device 230, wherein the at least one identification information has been reported to the third communication device 230. The at least one condition may include a fifth condition that the at least one first communication device 110 is not assigned with at least one core network identification or at least one temporary identification, wherein the at least one core network identification  or at least one temporary identification is associated to the at least one identification information. For example, there is a one-to-one mapping between the at least one core network identification and the at least one identification information. The at least one condition may include a sixth condition that a timer for the acknowledgement message expires or is not running. The at least one condition may include a seventh condition that at least one received identification information is recorded. The at least one condition may include an eighth condition that the at least one identification information is allowed to be reported to the third communication device 230.

[0143] Several conditions for the transmission of the acknowledgement message have been described. It is to be understood that these conditions are only for purposes of illustration, without suggesting any limitations. Any suitable condition may be applied for the transmission of the acknowledgement message. These conditions may be applied separately, or in any combination. Scope of embodiments of the present disclosure is not limited here. Further embodiments regarding transmitting the acknowledgement message based on the at least one condition will be described with respect to FIG. 5 to FIG. 8. In some embodiments, several conditions for the transmission of the acknowledgement message described above can also be used to determine at least one of the following:

[0144] - Whether the at least one received identification information can be recorded by the second communication device 402; or

[0145] - Whether the at least one received identification information can be reported to the third communication device 230 or the fourth communication device 160.

[0146] In some embodiments, the second communication device 402 may receive, from the third communication device 230, a configuration associated with the at least one condition. For example, the configuration may include a value (such as the max value) of the timer associated with the sixth condition mentioned above.

[0147] In some embodiments, the acknowledgement message may include at least one of: at least one first identification of the at least one first communication device 110, at least one second identification of the at least one reader, at least one core network identification assigned to the at least one first communication device 110, at least one temporary identification assigned to the at least one first communication device 110, or the area information.

[0148] In some embodiments, the at least one first communication device 110 comprises a plurality of first communication devices. In an option, the acknowledgment message may include an area identification and a list of first identifications of the plurality of first communication devices in an area associated with the area identification. In another option, the acknowledgment message may include a list of area identifications and a plurality of lists of first identifications of the plurality of first communication devices, each list of first identifications corresponding an area identification in the list of area identifications. In a further option, the acknowledgment message may include a list of area identifications, a plurality of lists of second identifications of a plurality of readers associated with the list of area identifications, and a plurality of list of first identifications of the plurality of first communication devices for the plurality of readers.

[0149] In some embodiments, the at least one reader may include the second communication device 402. That is, the second communication device 402 may be the second communication device 120 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the at least one reader is served by the second communication device 402 such as a network node. For example, the second communication device 402 may be the fourth communication device 160 in FIG. 1B. The request is transmitted from the second communication device 402 to the at least one first communication device 110 via the at least one reader. The at least one response is received at the second communication device 402 from the at least one first communication device 110 via the at least one reader.

[0150] In embodiments where the at least one first communication device 110 comprises a plurality of first communication devices, the at least one response may include a plurality of responses comprising a plurality of identification information of the plurality of first communication devices.

[0151] In some embodiments, the second communication device 402 may receive, from the at least one reader for the plurality of first communication devices, a plurality of first identifications of the plurality of first communication devices. The second communication device 402 may combine the plurality of first identifications based on at least one of: area identifications of the plurality of first communication devices, at least one cell serving the plurality of first communication devices, or the plurality of first communication devices served by the second communication device 402. The second communication device 402 may transmit, to the third communication device 230, the acknowledgement message including the combined first identifications.

[0152] By transmitting the acknowledgement message based on the at least one condition being satisfied, the duplicate acknowledgement messages from the reader to the CN can be avoided. The signaling overhead can thus be reduced. The functionality procedure such as the inventory procedure can be enhanced. Further details regarding the transmission of the acknowledgement message based on the at least one condition will be described with respect to FIG. 5 to FIG. 8 below. In the description of FIG. 5 to FIG. 8, it is assumed that the functionality of the first communication device 110 is an inventory functionality. It is to be understood that these embodiments may also applied for other suitable functionality of the first communication device 110.

[0153] It is to be understood that although a single first communication device 110 and a single second communication device 120 is shown in FIG. 5 to FIG. 8, there may be a plurality of first communication devices and / or a plurality of second communication devices 120 in some embodiments.

[0154] FIG. 5 illustrates another signaling flow 500 of backscattering transmission in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 500 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 2 and FIG. 1A. It is assumed that in FIG. 5, the first communication device 110 and the second communication device 120 are in topology 1.

[0155] As shown, a CN node or function such as the AF 250 or the third communication device 230 may transmit (510) an Inventory Command to the second communication device 120 such as the reader. The third communication device 230 may be an AMF, or integrated with an AMF.

[0156] Upon receiving (520) an Inventory Command from the CN, the second communication device 120 may transmit (530) an Inventory Request message to the first communication device 110 such as AIoT device (s) . The inventory request may be used to request the device ID. Additionally, the request message may include at least one of: Value Tag, or Area ID. The second communication device 120 may be configured with at least one Area ID for AIoT service / function.

[0157] Upon receiving (540) an Inventory Request message, the first communication device 110 may send (550) Inventory Response message. Additionally, this message may comprise at least one of the following information: an Area ID, or Value Tag.

[0158] Upon receiving (560) the Inventory Response message, the second communication  device 120 may determine (570) that the device ID may be recorded or forward to CN for at least one of the following cases:

[0159] - If the device ID is received (from AIoT device) for the first time;

[0160] - If the device ID hasn’ t been recorded;

[0161] - If the device ID hasn’ t been reported (to CN) ;

[0162] - if the device ID hasn’ t been reported (to CN) during a period of time;

[0163] - If the device ID has been reported but not been acknowledged; or

[0164] - If the device ID has been reported but not been assigned with a corresponding CN ID or temp ID.

[0165] Additionally, to forward the device ID, the second communication device 120 may send (580) , to CN such as the AF 250 or the third communication device 230 or AMF, an Inventory Acknowledgement message, which comprising at least one of the following information: the device ID, an reader ID (added by the reader) , or the Area ID (added by the reader) . The AF 250 may receive (590) the Inventory Acknowledgement message.

[0166] Additionally, the second communication device 120 may maintain an AIoT Device context for each device having reported its device ID, which comprises at least one of: the Device ID, or corresponding CN ID or temporary (temp) ID.

[0167] Alternatively, in some embodiments, upon receiving (560) the Inventory Response message, the second communication device 120 may trigger / send Inventory Acknowledgement message for at least one of the following conditions or cases:

[0168] - If the device ID is received (from AIoT device) for the first time;

[0169] - If the device ID hasn’ t been reported (to CN) ;

[0170] - if the device ID hasn’ t been reported (to CN) during a period of time;

[0171] - If the device ID has been reported but not been acknowledged; or

[0172] - If the device ID has been reported but not been assigned with corresponding CN ID or temp ID.

[0173] Additionally, a timer (also referred to as a prohibit timer) may be used to control the triggering / sending of Inventory Acknowledgement message. If the prohibit timer is running, even if at least one of the above cases is fulfilled, the second communication device 120 may not send (580) Inventory Acknowledgement message. If the prohibit timer is not running, and  if at least one of the above cases is fulfilled, the second communication device 120 may send (580) the Inventory Acknowledgement message. Then, it may start, restart or reset the prohibit timer. The max value of timer may be configured by CN node or function for AIoT or by RAN node such as the gNB.

[0174] In some embodiments, the Device IDs from a plurality of AIoT devices may be reported in the form of a list of Device IDs. The CN may determine the area ID or Reader based on the (ID of) signalling channel / tunnel. Alternatively, the Device IDs from a plurality of AIoT devices may be reported in the form of an Area ID, and a list of Device IDs in this area. Alternatively, the Device IDs from a plurality of AIoT devices may be reported in the form of a list of Area IDs, and for each Area ID there is a corresponding list of Device IDs. Alternatively, the Device IDs from a plurality of AIoT devices may be reported in the form of a list of Area ID, for each Area ID there is a corresponding list of Reader IDs. And for each Reader ID there is a corresponding list of Device IDs.

[0175] With the signaling flow 500, the signaling overhead during the inventory procedure can be reduced. The inventory procedure can thus be more efficient.

[0176] FIG. 6 illustrates another signaling flow 600 of backscattering transmission in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 600 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 2 and FIG. 1B. It is assumed that in FIG. 6, the first communication device 110, the second communication device 120 and the fourth communication device 160 are in topology 2.

[0177] As shown, a CN node or function such as the AF 250 or an AMF may transmit (610 / 620) an Inventory Command to the second communication device 120 such as the reader or UE reader and / or the fourth communication device 160 (such as a network node) serving the second communication device 160. In an option (referred to as Option 1) , the signallings between CN such as the AF 250 and the second communication device 120 such as the UE reader are transparent to the fourth communication device 160. In another option (referred to as Option 2) , signallings CN such as the AF 250 and the second communication device 120 such as the UE reader may be parsed by the fourth communication device 160 such as the network node.

[0178] Upon receiving (615 / 625) an Inventory Command from the CN, the second communication device 120 may transmit (630) an Inventory Request message to the first communication device 110 such as AIoT device (s) . The inventory request may be used to  request the device ID. Additionally, the request message may include at least one of: Value Tag, or Area ID The second communication device 120 may be configured with at least one Area ID for AIoT service / function by the third communication device 230.

[0179] Upon receiving (635) an Inventory Request message, the first communication device 110 may send (640) Inventory Response message. Additionally, this message may comprise at least one of the following information: an Area ID.

[0180] Upon receiving (645) the Inventory Response message, the second communication device 120 may determine (650) that the device ID may be recorded or forward to CN for at least one of the following conditions or cases:

[0181] - If the device ID is received (from AIoT device) for the first time;

[0182] - If the device ID hasn’ t been recorded;

[0183] - If the device ID hasn’ t been reported (to CN) ;

[0184] - if the device ID hasn’ t been reported (to CN) during a period of time;
