AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless communication systems face challenges in efficiently managing UE-centric clusters in dynamic MIMO systems, particularly in cell-free massive MIMO environments, where determining appropriate access points (APs) and transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states for downlink transmissions is complex and inefficient.

Method used

The system employs signaling mechanisms to indicate sets of candidate APs and TCI states for channel measurement, allowing UEs to receive or transmit based on these states, with updates managed through RRC and MAC control elements, and utilizing QCL types for demodulation reference signals.

Benefits of technology

This approach enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of UE-centric clusters by improving signal quality, reducing interference, and optimizing resource utilization in dynamic MIMO systems.

[0061] The detailed description of the appended drawings is intended as a description of preferred embodiments of the present application and is not intended to represent the only form in which the present application may be practiced. It should be understood that the same or equivalent functions may be accomplished by different embodiments that are intended to be encompassed within the spirit and scope of the present application.

[0062] While operations are depicted in the drawings in a particular order, persons skilled in the art will readily recognize that such operations need not be performed in the particular order as shown or in a sequential order, or that all illustrated operations need be performed, to achieve desirable results; sometimes one or more operations can be skipped. Further, the drawings can schematically depict one or more example processes in the form of a flow diagram. However, other operations that are not depicted can be incorporated in the example processes that are schematically illustrated. For example, one or more additional operations can be performed before, after, simultaneously, or between any of the illustrated operations. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing can be advantageous.

[0063] Reference will now be made in detail to some embodiments of the present disclosure, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. To facilitate understanding, embodiments are provided under specific network architecture and service scenarios, such as 3GPP long-term evolution (LTE) and LTE advanced, 3GPP 5G new radio (NR) , 5G-Advanced, 6G, and so on. It is contemplated that along with developments of network architectures and new service scenarios, all embodiments in the present disclosure are also applicable to similar technical problems; and moreover, the terminologies recited in the present disclosure may change, which should not affect the principle of the present disclosure.

[0064] Aspects of the present disclosure are described in the context of a wireless communications system.

[0065] Figure 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communications system 100 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more NEs (e.g., BSs) 102, one or more UEs 104, and a CN 106. The wireless communications system 100 may support various radio access technologies. In some implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a 4G network, such as an LTE network or an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. In some other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be an NR network, such as a 5G network, a 5G-Advanced (5G-A) network, or a 5G ultrawideband (5G-UWB) network. In other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a combination of a 4G network and a 5G network, or other suitable radio access technology (RAT) including Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 (Wi-Fi) , IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) , IEEE 802.20. The wireless communications system 100 may support radio access technologies beyond 5G, for example, 6G. Additionally, the wireless communications system 100 may support technologies, such as time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , or code division multiple access (CDMA) , etc.

[0066] The one or more NEs 102 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region to form the wireless communications system 100. One or more of the NEs 102 described herein may be or include or may be referred to as a network node, a base station, a network element, a network function, a network entity, a RAN, a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB) , a next-generation NodeB (gNB) , or other suitable terminology. An NE 102 and a UE 104 may communicate via a communication link, which may be a wireless or wired connection. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may perform wireless communication (e.g., receive signaling, transmit signaling) over a Uu interface.

[0067] An NE 102 may provide a geographic coverage area for which the NE 102 may support services for one or more UEs 104 within the geographic coverage area. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may support wireless communication of signals related to services (e.g., voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, etc. ) according to one or multiple radio access technologies. In some implementations, an NE 102 may be moveable, for example, a satellite associated with an NTN. In some implementations, different geographic coverage areas associated with the same or different radio access technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas may be associated with different NEs 102.

[0068] The one or more UEs 104 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region of the wireless communications system 100. A UE 104 may include or may be referred to as a remote unit, a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a subscriber device, a transmitter device, a receiver device, or some other suitable terminology. In some implementations, the UE 104 may be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 104 may be referred to as an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device, an Internet-of-Everything (IoE) device, or machine-type communication (MTC) device, among other examples.

[0069] A UE 104 may be able to support wireless communication directly with other UEs 104 over a communication link. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link. In some implementations, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) deployments, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, or cellular-V2X deployments, the communication link may be referred to as a sidelink. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a PC5 interface.

[0070] An NE 102 may support communications with the CN 106, or with another NE 102, or both. For example, an NE 102 may interface with other NE 102 or the CN 106 through one or more backhaul links (e.g., S1, N2, N3, or another network interface) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 may communicate with each other directly. In some other implementations, the NEs 102 may communicate with each other indirectly (e.g., via the CN 106) . In some implementations, one or more NEs 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC) . An ANC may communicate with the one or more UEs 104 through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs) .

[0071] The CN 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The CN 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) , or a 5G core (5GC) , which may include a control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an AMF) and a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . In some implementations, the control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management (e.g., data bearers, signal bearers, etc. ) for the one or more UEs 104 served by the one or more NEs 102 associated with the CN 106.

[0072] The CN 106 may communicate with a packet data network over one or more backhaul links (e.g., via an S1, N2, N3, or another network interface) . The packet data network may include an application server. In some implementations, one or more UEs 104 may communicate with the application server. A UE 104 may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the CN 106 via an NE 102. The CN 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information, data, and the like) between the UE 104 and the application server using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session) . The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE 104 and the CN 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the CN 106) .

[0073] In the wireless communications system 100, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (e.g., multiple frame structures) . The NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0074] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0075] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0076] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (e.g., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0077] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0078] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0079] Massive MIMO is a promising 5G wireless access technology that can provide high throughput, high reliability, and high energy efficiency with simple signal processing. In massive MIMO system, a BS with many antennas may simultaneously serve many UEs in a same time-frequency resource.

[0080] Cell free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) has been recently developed, which may exhibit some different characteristics from massive MIMO. In a CF-mMIMO system, service antennas are spread out over a large area. Owing to the distributed antennas that can exploit diversity against shadow fading, the CF-mMIMO system can potentially offer much higher probability of coverage than the massive MIMO system at the cost of increased backhaul requirements. Moreover, interference in the CF-mMIMO system can be eliminated by cooperative transmission. The CF-mMIMO system can provide better performance than a small-cell system in terms of 95%-likely per-user throughput. Given the above benefits, CF-mMIMO becomes a hot candidate for 6G system.

[0081] In a CF-mMIMO system, numerous APs may serve a smaller number of UEs using identical time-frequency resources. The CF-mMIMO system is suitable for improving the coverage and providing a more uniform performance across UEs, wherein clustering is an essential component of the practical CF-mMIMO system. Serving all UEs with all transmitters in a large region is impractical. The reasons are as follows. First, the capacity of an individual AP can serve only a limited number of UEs. In addition, serving UEs with distant APs occupies resources but contributes little useful signal power, which is not power efficient and may cause strong inference to other UEs scheduled in the same time-frequency resources. Given this, a practical scheme in the CF-mMIMO system is to serve a UE with only APs close to it. APs serving a UE may be referred to as a cluster of APs or an AP cluster. Such cluster is UE-centric (or UE-specific) . Moreover, the APs serving the UE may change as the UE moves in the network, and thus the UE-centric cluster may be dynamic. The CF-mMIMO system is "cell-free" because there is no static cell for a UE to get access but a dynamic AP cluster formed around the UE and changed as the UE moves in the network. Herein, the terms "AP" and "transmit-receive point (TRP) " may be used interchangeably.

[0082] Figure 2 illustrates an exemplary CF-mMIMO system with UE-centric clusters in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure.

[0083] Referring to Figure 2, the CF-mMIMO system may include a plurality of APs (e.g., AP 1, AP 2, …, AP M, …) and a plurality of UEs (e.g., UE 1, UE 2, …, UE K, …) . The plurality of APs may be connected to a centric processor unit (CPU) . Each AP may has a small number of antennas, such as 1, 2, or 4. Each UE may be served by a respective UE-centric cluster (e.g., cluster 1, cluster 2, …, cluster K, …) , which may consist of one or more of the plurality of APs. For example, UE 2 is served by cluster 2 which includes AP1, AP2 and AP3. AP1, AP2 and AP3 may perform joint transmission or reception for UE 2.

[0084] The benefits from a CF-mMIMO system may include the following aspects: 1. improving cell edge UE throughput because it can increase the received signal quality and line-of-sight (LoS) probability by reducing the minimum distance between the UE and multiple APs; 2. achieving Marco diversity due to distinct path loss and shadowing from each serving transmitter; and 3. enhancing signal strength and suppressing interference by coordination between APs in the cluster.

[0085] The UE-centric cluster for a UE in a CF-mMIMO system is usually dynamic as the UE moves in the network. Then, how to indicate APs for DL transmissions (e.g., joint transmission by one or more APs) in a dynamic UE-centric cluster (also referred to as a dynamic cluster) needs to be discussed. The APs for DL transmissions may be referred to as actual APs for DL transmissions. In some cases, the actual APs for DL transmissions may be determined from a set of candidate APs based on channel measurement results from the UE. Then, how to indicate the set of candidate APs for channel measurement also needs to be discussed.

[0086] Moreover, to support DL transmissions from the APs in a dynamic UE-centric cluster, a TCI state for each AP needs to be indicated to the UE for demodulation. In addition, the QCL Types of APs in a dynamic UE-centric cluster also needs to be defined.

[0087] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide various solutions for UE centric clusters in a MIMO system. For example, some embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions for indicating APs for DL transmissions in a dynamic UE-centric cluster and / or TCI states associated with the APs. Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions for indicating a set of candidate APs for channel measurement to the UE. Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions for defining the QCL Types of APs with more information between APs in a dynamic UE-centric cluster. More details will be described in the following text in combination with the appended drawings.

[0088] According to some embodiments of the present application, a UE may receive, e.g., from an NE, first signalling indicating at least one of: one or more APs from a set of candidate APs; or one or more TCI states, wherein the one or more APs are associated with the one or more TCI states. The one or more APs may be used for DL transmission (s) (e.g., joint transmission) for the UE. The one or more APs may be referred to as actual APs. Then, the UE may receive DL transmission (s) from the one or more APs based on the one or more TCI states.

[0089] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the one or more APs for DL transmission (s) may be determined from a set of candidate APs based on channel measurement results from the UE. The set of candidate APs for channel measurement may be determined by the NE from all the APs (e.g., 64 APs) in a serving cell of the UE based on UE's measurement reports, such as reference signal receiving power (RSRP) reports. To determine the one or more APs for DL transmission (s) , the UE may perform channel measurement (e.g., channel state information (CSI) measurement) on the set of candidate APs to acquire CSI, and report the CSI to the NE, such that the NE may further determine the one or more APs for DL transmission (s) . In such embodiments, the NE may manage and maintain a set of candidate APs for channel measurement and indicate it to the UE. The following Embodiment 1 provides solutions for indicating a set of candidate APs for channel measurement to the UE.

[0090] Embodiment 1

[0091] In Embodiment 1, the NE may transmit second signalling indicating a set of candidate APs for channel measurement. Embodiment 1 may include the following Embodiment 1-1, Embodiment 1-2, Embodiment 1-3, Embodiment 1-4, and Embodiment 1-5, which provide different solutions for indicating the set of candidate APs for channel measurement.

[0092] Embodiment 1-1

[0093] In Embodiment 1-1, each of the set of candidate APs may be associated with a corresponding channel measurement resource (e.g., CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource) . Each channel measurement resource may be associated with a corresponding reference signal (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted on it from the associated candidate AP. Accordingly, the second signalling may indicate a set of channel measurement resources, each of which implicitly indicates an associated candidate AP, thereby indicating the set of candidate APs.

[0094] As an example, the second signalling may be RRC signalling or an RRC configuration message.

[0095] For example, the second signalling may indicate n CSI-RS resources, e.g., {CSI-RS resource 1, CSI-RS resource 2, …, CSI-RS resource n} . Each of the n CSI-RS resources is included in the whole set of CSI-RS resources associated with the serving cell of the UE, and is associated with a corresponding index in the whole set. The second signalling may indicate the n CSI-RS resources by their corresponding indices. For example, it is assumed that the serving cell includes 64 APs indexed as AP #1 to AP #64. The 64 APs may be associated with 64 CSI-RS resources indexed as CSI-RS resource #1 to CSI-RS resource #64, respectively. When the second signalling indicates {CSI-RS resource #3, CSI-RS resource #6, CSI-RS resource #9, CSI-RS resource #12} , it implicitly indicates {AP #3, AP #6, AP #9, AP #12} as the set of candidate APs for channel measurement.

[0096] Embodiment 1-2

[0097] In Embodiment 1-2, one or more candidate APs in the set of candidate APs may use two or more different beams, each beam may be associated with a corresponding channel measurement resource (e.g., CSI-RS resource) , and each channel measurement resource may be associated with a corresponding reference signal (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted on it from the associated candidate AP using the associated beam. Accordingly, the second signalling may implicitly indicate the set of candidate APs by a set of channel measurement resources, and the set of channel measurement resources may include one or more subsets of channel measurement resources. Each subset of channel measurement resources is associated with a candidate AP, and different channel measurement resources in a subset of channel measurement resources are associated with different beams from the associated candidate AP. For a candidate AP using only one beam, the associated subset of channel measurement resources may include only one channel measurement resource.

[0098] As an example, the second signalling may be RRC signalling or a RRC configuration message.

[0099] For example, the second signalling may indicate a set of channel measurement resources as { {CSI-RS resource 11, …, CSI-RS resource 1m1} , {CSI-RS resource 21, …, CSI-RS resource 2m2} , …, {CSI-RS resource k1, …, CSI-RS resource kmk} } , wherein {CSI-RS resource 11, …, CSI-RS resource 1m1} is associated with candidate AP 1 using m1 beams, {CSI-RS resource 21, …, CSI-RS resource 2m2} is associated with candidate AP 2 using m2 beams, …, {CSI-RS resource k1, …, CSI-RS resource kmk} is associated with candidate AP k using mk beams, thereby implicitly indicating {AP 1, AP 2, …, AP k} as the set of candidate APs for channel measurement. Also, the CSI-RS resources may be indicated by using their corresponding indices in the whole set of CSI-RS resources associated with the serving cell of the UE.

[0100] For Embodiments 1-1 and 1-2, updating of the set of candidate APs may be realized by RRC reconfiguration.

[0101] Embodiment 1-3

[0102] To reduce a reconfiguration frequency of RRC signalling and to keep up with the change of candidate APs in the dynamic cluster, the candidate APs in the dynamic cluster may be determined based on dynamically adding / removing AP (s) from an initial set of candidate APs configured by RRC signalling.

[0103] According to some examples of Embodiment 1-3, after a set of candidate APs is initially configured (e.g., by any method described with respect to Embodiment 1-1 or 1-2) , the UE may receive third signalling indicating at least one of: first candidate AP (s) to be added to the set of candidate APs; or second candidate AP (s) to be deleted from the set of candidate APs.

[0104] In some examples, for each candidate AP to be added or deleted, the third signaling may include a flag bit indicating whether to add or delete the candidate AP and an index of a channel measure resource (e.g., CSI-RS resource) associated with the candidate AP to be added or deleted. The index of the channel measure resource may be an index of the channel measure resource in the whole set of channel measure resources associated with the serving cell of the UE.

[0105] For example, it is assumed that the set of candidate APs is initially configured to consist of AP 1, AP 2, …, and AP n, which are associated with CSI-RS resource 1, CSI-RS resource 2, …, and CSI-RS resource n, respectively. After the UE’s movement, AP 1 may be determined by the NE to be removed from the set of candidate APs and AP n+1 associated with CSI-RS resource n+1 may be determined by the NE to be added to the set of candidate APs. Then, the NE may transmit the third signalling indicating AP n+1 to be added to the set of candidate APs and AP 1 to be deleted from the set of candidate APs. For example, the third signalling may include a flag bit indicating to add AP n+1 and an index of CSI-RS resource n+1, and include a flag bit indicating to delete AP 1 and an index of CSI-RS resource 1. As a result, the set of candidate APs is changed to {AP 2, AP 3, …, AP n+1} , and the associated set of channel measurement resources is change to {CSI-RS resource 2, CSI-RS resource 3, …, CSI-RS resource n+1} .

[0106] In some examples, the third signalling may be a MAC CE message.

[0107] Figure 3 illustrates an exemplary MAC CE for indicating candidate AP (s) to be added or deleted in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure.

[0108] In the example of Figure 3, the MAC CE may include 5 octets. The first octet (i.e., Oct 1) may indicate the serving cell identity (ID) and a bandwidth part (BWP) ID for the indicated AP (s) or associated CSI-RS resource (s) in the following fields. Each of the other octets (i.e., Oct 2 to Oct 5) may be used to indicate a CSI-RS resource associated with an AP to be added or deleted for the dynamic cluster. Accordingly, in the example of Figure 3, a maximum of 4 APs to be added or deleted for the dynamic cluster can be indicated by the MAC CE. The field "R" may represent a reserved bit in the MAC CE.

[0109] As shown in Figure 3, the first bit in each of Oct 2 to Oct 5 may be a flag bit indicating whether to add or delete a candidate AP. For example, the flag bit being "0" may indicate to add a candidate AP, whereas the flag bit being "1" may indicate to delete a candidate AP, or vice versa. The last 6 bits in each of Oct 2 to Oct 5 may indicate an index of a CSI-RS resource associated with the AP to be added or deleted. The MAC CE in Figure 3 can support adding and / or deleting AP (s) from a maximum of 64 APs in a serving cell.

[0110] Embodiment 1-4

[0111] In Embodiment 1-4, the second signalling indicating the set of candidate APs for channel measurement may include a bitmap, and each bit in the bitmap is associated with a candidate AP and indicates whether the associated AP is included in (or activated) or excluded from (e.g., deactivated) the set of candidate APs. For example, a bit being "1" may indicate that the associated AP is included in the set of candidate APs, whereas the bit being "0" may indicate that the associated AP is excluded from the set of candidate APs. In some examples, the second signalling herein may be a MAC-CE message. The number of bits included in the bitmap may be equal to the number of all APs included in the serving cell of the UE. Updating of the set of candidate APs may be realized by signalling an updated bitmap, or using any method described with respect to Embodiment 1-3. The method described with respect to Embodiment 1-4 may also be used to update the set of candidate APs after a set of candidate APs is initially configured by any method described with respect to Embodiment 1-1 or 1-2.

[0112] Embodiment 1-5

[0113] In Embodiment 1-5, the UE may receive fourth signalling indicating a plurality of sets of channel measurement resources (e.g., CSI-RS resources) , wherein each set of channel measurement resources in the plurality of sets of channel measurement resources is associated with a corresponding AP cluster (i.e., a corresponding set of candidate APs) . As an example, the fourth signaling may be RRC signalling or an RRC configuration message.

[0114] In such embodiment, the set of channel measurement resources indicated by the second signalling is selected from the plurality of sets of channel measurement resources indicated by the fourth signalling. For example, each set in the plurality of sets of channel measurement resources may have a set index, and the second signalling may include a set index of the selected set of channel measurement resources. Based on the set index of the selected set of channel measurement resources, the UE may determine a set of candidate APs associated with the selected set of channel measurement resources for channel measurement.

[0115] As an example, the second signalling may be a MAC CE message or DCI.

[0116] Figure 4 illustrates an exemplary MAC CE for indicating a set of candidate APs in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure.

[0117] In the example of Figure 4, the MAC CE may include 2 octets (i. e, Oct 1 and Oct 2) . Oct 1 may indicate the serving cell ID and a BWP ID for the indicated set of CSI-RS resources. The last 6 bits in Oct 2 may be used to indicate a set index of a set of CSI-RS resources selected from the plurality of sets of CSI-RS resources indicated by the fourth signalling. The MAC CE in Figure 4 can support selecting a set of CSI-RS resources from a maximum of 64 sets of CSI-RS resources.

[0118] Based on the set index, the UE may determine a set of candidate APs associated with the selected set of CSI-RS resources for channel measurement.

[0119] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the NE may further select one or more APs for DL transmission (s) (e.g., joint transmission) from the set of candidate APs for channel measurement (e.g., indicated by any method described with respect to Embodiment 1) . Such one or more APs may be referred to as actual AP (s) for DL transmission (s) .

[0120] To support dynamic AP selection for DL transmission (s) , especially for energy saving or interference management, the actual AP (s) and the TCI state (s) associated with the actual AP (s) should be indicated to the UE for demodulation. The following Embodiment 2 provides several solutions for indicating the actual AP (s) and the associated TCI state (s) to the UE.

[0121] Embodiment 2

[0122] In Embodiment 2, the NE may transmit first signalling indicating at least one of: one or more APs or one or more TCI states associated with the one or more APs for DL transmission (s) . Embodiment 2 may further include Embodiment 2-1, Embodiment 2-2, Embodiment 2-3, and Embodiment 2-4.

[0123] Embodiment 2-1

[0124] In Embodiment 2-1, for each AP, there is only one TCI state associated with it. For example, when only a small number of transceiver units (TXRUs) , such as 1, 2, or 4, is used, each AP may be associated with only one TCI state. Accordingly, in Embodiment 2-1, the first signalling may indicate the one or more APs for DL transmission (s) , and the one or more TCI states are implicitly indicated when indicating the one or more APs.

[0125] In some examples of Embodiment 2-1, the first signalling may include a bitmap, and each bit in the bitmap is associated with a candidate AP from a set of candidate APs for channel measurement (e.g., the set of candidate APs indicated by any method described with respect to Embodiment 1) and indicates whether the associated candidate AP is selected for the DL transmission (s) . The total number of the bitmap may be equal to the number of candidate APs included in the set of candidate APs. For example, each bit being "1" may indicate the associated candidate AP is selected for the DL transmission (s) , whereas each bit being "0" may indicate the associated candidate AP is not selected for the DL transmission (s) , or vice versa.

[0126] In some other examples of Embodiment 2-1, AP group (e.g., a subset of candidate APs in the set of candidate APs) may be introduced to reduce signalling overhead since all the APs in the group may be simultaneously selected or simultaneously not selected. In such examples, the set of candidate APs for channel measurement may include one or more subsets of candidate APs.

[0127] As an example, the first signalling may include a bitmap, and each bit in the bitmap is associated with a subset of candidate APs in the set of candidate APs for channel measurement and indicates whether the associated subset of candidate APs is selected for the DL transmission (s) . For example, each bit being "1" may indicate the associated subset of candidate APs is selected for the DL transmission (s) , whereas each bit being "0" may indicate the associated subset of candidate APs is not selected for the DL transmission (s) , or vice versa.

[0128] As another example, the first signalling may indicate an index of a subset of candidate APs to be selected for the DL transmission (s) . For example, assuming that the set of candidate APs includes K subsets of candidate APs, the first signalling may include a log2 (K) -bit-indication to indicate an index of a subset of candidate APs from the K subsets of candidate APs to be selected for DL transmission (s) .

[0129] In Embodiment 2-1, the one or more TCI states are implicitly indicated by the first signalling in the case that each selected AP for the DL transmission (s) is associated with only one candidate TCI state.

[0130] In some cases of Embodiment 2-1, priority may be introduced for AP selection. In such cases, the UE may receive fifth signalling indicating a subset of APs in a set of candidate APs for channel measurement which is always selected for the DL transmission (s) (e.g., with a high priority for AP selection) , and the remaining candidate APs in the set of candidate APs may have a low priority for AP selection. The first signalling may indicate whether each of the remaining candidate APs in the set of candidate APs is selected for the DL transmission (s) . For example, the first signalling may include a bitmap for the remaining candidate APs, wherein each bit in the bitmap may indicate whether each of the remaining candidate APs in the set of candidate APs is selected for the DL transmission (s) . In this way, it can reduce the signalling overhead for indicating selected APs.

[0131] Embodiment 2-2

[0132] The difference between Embodiment 2-2 and Embodiment 2-1 is that: in Embodiment 2-1, each selected AP for the DL transmission (s) is associated with only one candidate TCI state, whereas in Embodiment 2-2, at least one selected AP for the DL transmission (s) may be associated with multiple candidate TCI states. For example, at least one AP may have multiple candidate TCI states associated with different beams when a large number of TxRU, such as 32 or 64, is used. Accordingly, a TCI state from the multiple candidate TCI states should be indicated to the UE.

[0133] In Embodiment 2-2, the first signalling may include a bitmap or indication as described with respect to Embodiment 2-1 to indicate selected AP (s) for DL transmission (s) . In addition, the first signalling may further include another indication for indicating (or the NE may further transmit an additional signalling to indicate) a TCI state for a selected AP which is associated with multiple candidate TCI states. As an example, the first signalling may be implemented by two messages, wherein one message may include the bitmap or indication for indicating the selected AP (s) , and the other message may include the indication for indicating a TCI state from multiple candidate TCI states.

[0134] In some examples of Embodiment 2-2, at least one selected AP for the DL transmission (s) may be associated with multiple candidate TCI states, and the first signalling further includes an indication indicating a TCI state from the multiple candidate TCI states for each of the at least one selected AP.

[0135] In some other examples of Embodiment 2-2, to reduce signaling overhead, a predetermined number of candidate combinations of TCI states for selected AP (s) for the DL transmission (s) may be configured to the UE (e.g., via RRC signalling) or activated to the UE (via a MAC CE) . The first signalling may further include an indication indicating a combination of TCI states from the predetermined number of candidate combinations of TCI states for selected AP (s) for the DL transmission (s) . As an example, the first signalling may be a MAC CE message or DCI.

[0136] For example, assuming that there are 4 candidate combinations of TCI states when 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 selected AP (s) are used for DL transmission (s) , then the signalling overhead for TCI state indication is reduced to 2 bits. AP1 may be associated with TCI state 11 and TCI state 12, AP2 may be associated with TCI state 21 and TCI state 22, AP3 may be associated with TCI state 31 and TCI state 32, and AP4 may be associated with TCI state 41 and TCI state 42.

[0137] As an example, in case of 3 selected APs for DL transmission (s) , 4 candidate combinations of TCI states may include: {TCI state 11 for AP1 &TCI state 21 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3} , {TCI state 12 for AP1 &TCI state 21 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3} , {TCI state 11 for AP1 &TCI state 22 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3} , and {TCI state 12 for AP1 &TCI state 22 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3} . In such example, only 1 beam can be selected for DL transmission for AP3.

[0138] As another example, in case of 4 selected APs for DL transmission (s) , 4 candidate combinations of TCI states may include: {TCI state 11 for AP1 &TCI state 21 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3 &TCI state 41 for AP4} , {TCI state 12 for AP1 &TCI state 21 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3 &TCI state 41 for AP4} , {TCI state 11 for AP1 &TCI state 22 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3 &TCI state 41 for AP4} , and {TCI state 12 for AP1 &TCI state 22 for AP2 &TCI state 31 for AP3 &TCI state 41 for AP4} . In such example, only 1 beam can be selected for DL transmission for AP3 and AP4.

[0139] In some cases of Embodiment 2-2, different time granularities may be used for TCI state indication and AP indication. For example, AP indication may be transmitted by MAC CE, and TCI indication may be transmitted by DCI.

[0140] Embodiment 2-3

[0141] In Embodiment 2-3, the APs and TCI states for DL transmission (s) are jointly indicated. For example, the AP (s) for DL transmission (s) may be implicitly indicated during TCI state selection.

[0142] In Embodiment 2-3, the first signalling may indicate the one or more APs and the one or more TCI states by a joint state. The joint state may be selected from a plurality of joint states. The plurality of joint states may be configured to the UE (e.g., via RRC signalling) or activated to the UE (via a MAC CE) .

[0143] In some cases, to achieve tradeoff between transmission flexibility and signalling overhead, a maximum number of joint states may be defined or restricted as a smaller number which is related to a set of candidate APs for channel measurement.

[0144] Each joint state of the plurality of joint states may include a list of TCI states, and each TCI state in the list of TCI states is associated with a channel measurement resource (e.g., CSI-RS resource) of an AP for the DL transmission (s) . Each channel measurement resource may be associated with a corresponding reference signal (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted on it.

[0145] Accordingly, the number of TCI states in the list of TCI states may be equal to the number of the selected AP (s) for DL transmission (s) . Therefore, based on the joint state indicated by the first signaling, the UE may determine a list of TCI states and selected AP (s) associated with the list of TCI states for DL transmission (s) .

[0146] In some examples, two or more TCI states in the list of TCI states may be the same. In this way, it can realize the same or different TCI states for different APs, which is useful for reducing the number of the candidate TCI states.

[0147] The following Table 1 shows an example of a plurality of joint states when a set of candidate APs includes 5 APs, e.g., numbered as AP 1 to AP 5. Table 1: an example of a plurality of joint states

[0148] Referring to Table 1, AP 1 to AP 5 are associated with CSI-RS resource 1 to CSI-RS resource 5, respectively. The plurality of joint states may include 16 joint states. Taking joint state 16 as an example, it may include 5 TCI states numbered as TCI state 1 to TCI state 5, which are associated with CSI-RS resource 1 to CSI-RS resource 5, respectively. Two or more TCI states in the 5 TCI states may be the same.

[0149] As an example, assuming that the first signaling indicates joint state 7, which may indicate AP 1, AP 4, and AP 5 and TCI state 1 associated with AP 1, TCI state 4 associated with AP 4, and TCI state 5 associated with AP 5 for DL transmission (s) .

[0150] Embodiment 2-4

[0151] In Embodiment 2-4, the first signalling may also indicate a joint state selected from a plurality of joint states. The plurality of joint states may be configured (e.g., via RRC signalling) or activated (e.g., via a MAC CE) to the UE. Each joint state of the plurality of joint states may include a list of TCI states. The difference between Embodiment 2-4 and Embodiment 2-3 lies in that at least one TCI state in the list of TCI states may be associated with two or more APs. In other words, Embodiment 2-4 relates to the cases that two or more APs may share a same TCI state and may be associated with a same channel measurement resource (e.g., CSI-RS resource) or a same reference signal (e.g., CSI-RS) .

[0152] In such embodiments, in addition to the joint state, the first signalling may further indicate (or the NE may transmit an additional signalling to indicate) which AP (s) from the two or more APs sharing the same TCI state in the joint state is selected for DL transmission (s) .

[0153] The following Table 2 shows another example of a plurality of joint states when a set of candidate APs includes 5 APs, e.g., numbered as AP 1 to AP 5.,

[0154] Referring to Table 2, the plurality of joint states may include 8 joint states numbered as joint state 1 to joint state 8. AP 1 and AP 2 may share the same TCI state (e.g., TCI state 1) and are associated with CSI-RS resource 1, AP 3 is associated with CSI-RS resource 3, AP 4 is associated with CSI-RS resource 4, and AP 5 is associated with CSI-RS resource 5.

[0155] The NE may firstly indicate the actually used TCI state (s) from the 8 joint states. For example, the NE may indicate joint state 2 is used for DL transmission (s) , which means that {AP1 and / or AP 2} and AP 3 are selected for DL transmission (s) . Since AP 1 and AP 2 share the same TCI state, the NE should further indicate whether {AP1} , {AP2} or {AP1, AP2} are selected for DL transmission (s) . For example, 2 bits may be further used to indicate the actually selected AP (s) with the same TCI state. Table 2: another example of a plurality of joint states

[0156] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, different QCL assumptions may be associated with different reference signals in one or more TCI states (e.g., the one or more TCI states indicated by using any method described with respect to Embodiment 2) for DL transmission (s) .

[0157] In some cases, e.g., when compensation is assumed to be made at the UE side, the UE may assume that DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA as specified in 3GPP standard documents.

[0158] In some other cases, e.g., when compensation is assumed to be made at NE side, the UE may assume that DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with a subset of DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA, and the DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with other DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA except for a Doppler shift and a Doppler spread.

[0159] In some cases, considering the flexible locations of APs, a Doppler shift and a Doppler spread may be the same for DL RSs in the same a subset of DL RSs, but are different between different subsets of DL RSs. For example, when compensation is assumed to be made at NE side, the UE may assume that DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission may be QCLed with a first subset of DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA, the DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission may be QCLed with one or more other subsets of DL RSs (e.g., a second subset of DL RSs) in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA except for a Doppler shift and a Doppler spread. All the DL RSs in each subset are QCLed with respect to QCL-TypeA.

[0160] In some examples, to differentiate QCL type assumption for each subset, a subset index can be configured in each TCI state for each reference RS. For example, each TCI state in the one or more TCI states may include a subset index for each DL RS in the TCI state. In this way, {Doppler shift, Doppler spread} can be assumed the same in each subset and this may reduce the complexity of channel estimation at the UE side.

[0161] Figure 5 illustrates a flowchart of an exemplary method in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The operations of the method illustrated in Figure 5 may be performed by a UE (e.g., UE 104 in Figure 1) as described herein or other apparatus with the like functions. In some implementations, the UE may execute a set of instructions to control functional elements of the UE to perform the described operations or functions.

[0162] At step 502, the UE may receive, from an NE (e.g., an NE 102 in Figure 1) , first signalling indicating at least one of: one or more APs from a set of candidate APs or one or more TCI states, wherein the one or more APs are associated with the one or more TCI states.

[0163] At step 504, the UE may receive, from the NE, DL transmission (s) from the one or more APs based on the one or more TCI states.

[0164] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the UE may receive, from the NE, second signalling indicating the set of candidate APs for channel measurement.

[0165] In some embodiments, the second signalling may indicate a set of channel measurement resources, wherein each channel measurement resource in the set of channel measurement resources is associated with a candidate AP in the set of candidate APs.

[0166] In an embodiment, the second signalling is an RRC configuration message.

[0167] In an embodiment, the set of channel measurement resources may include one or more subsets of channel measurement resources, each subset of channel measurement resources is associated with a candidate AP in the set of candidate APs, and different channel measurement resources in a subset of channel measurement resources are associated with different beams from the associated candidate AP.

[0168] In some embodiments, the UE may receive, from the NE, third signalling indicating at least one of: first candidate AP (s) to be added to the set of candidate APs; or second candidate AP(s) to be deleted from the set of candidate APs.

[0169] In an embodiment, the third signalling is a MAC CE message.

[0170] In an embodiment, for each candidate AP to be added or deleted, the third signalling may include a flag bit indicating whether to add or delete the candidate AP and an index of a channel measure resource associated with the candidate AP to be added or deleted.

[0171] In some embodiments, the second signalling may include a bitmap, and each bit in the bitmap is associated with a candidate AP and may indicate whether the associated AP is included in or excluded from the set of candidate APs.

[0172] In some embodiments, the UE may receive, from the NE, fourth signalling indicating a plurality of sets of channel measurement resources, the set of channel measurement resources is selected from the plurality of sets of channel measurement resources, and the second signalling may include a set index of the selected set of channel measurement resources

[0173] According to some embodiments of the present application, the first signalling may include a bitmap, and each bit in the bitmap is associated with a candidate AP from the set of candidate APs for channel measurement and may indicate whether the associated candidate AP is selected for the DL transmission (s) .

[0174] According to some embodiments of the present application, the first signalling may include a bitmap, and each bit in the bitmap is associated with a subset of candidate APs in the set of candidate APs for channel measurement and may indicate whether the associated subset of candidate APs is selected for the DL transmission (s) .

[0175] In some embodiments, the UE may receive DL transmission (s) from the one or more APs based on the one or more TCI states implicitly indicated by the bitmap in the case that each selected AP for the DL transmission (s) is associated with only one candidate TCI state.

[0176] In some embodiments, at least one selected AP for the DL transmission (s) is associated with multiple candidate TCI states, and the first signalling may further include an indication indicating a TCI state from the multiple candidate TCI states for each of the at least one selected AP, wherein the one or more TCI states include the TCI state (s) indicated by the indication.

[0177] In some embodiments, the first signalling may further include an indication indicating a combination of TCI states from a predetermined number of candidate combinations of TCI states for selected AP (s) for the DL transmission (s) , and each TCI state in the combination of TCI states is associated with a selected AP, wherein the one or more TCI states are the combination of TCI states indicated by the indication.

[0178] According to some embodiments of the present application, the UE may receive, from the NE, fifth signalling indicating a subset of APs in the set of candidate APs for channel measurement which is always selected for the DL transmission (s) , and the first signalling may indicate whether each of remaining candidate APs in the set of candidate APs is selected for the DL transmission (s) .

[0179] According to some embodiments of the present application, the first signalling may indicate the one or more APs and the one or more TCI states by a joint state selected from a plurality of joint states, each joint state of the plurality of joint states may include a list of TCI states, and each TCI state in the list of TCI states is associated with a channel measurement resource of an AP for the DL transmission (s) .

[0180] In some embodiments, two or more TCI states in the list of TCI states are the same.

[0181] According to some embodiments of the present application, DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA.

[0182] According to some embodiments of the present application, DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with a subset of DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA, and the DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with other DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA except for a Doppler shift and a Doppler spread.

[0183] According to some embodiments of the present application, DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with a first subset of DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA, the DMRS port (s) for the DL transmission are QCLed with a second subset of DL RSs in the one or more TCI states with respect to QCL-TypeA except for a Doppler shift and a Doppler spread, and all the DL RSs in each subset are QCLed with respect to QCL-TypeA.

[0184] In some embodiments, each TCI state in the one or more TCI states may include a subset index for each DL RS in the TCI state.

[0185] It should be noted that the method described herein describes a possible implementation, and that the operations and the steps may be arranged or otherwise modified and that other implementations are possible.

[0186] Figure 6 illustrates a flowchart of an exemplary method in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The operations of the method illustrated in Figure 6 may be performed by an NE (e.g., NE 102 as illustrated in Figure 1) as described herein or other apparatus with the like functions. In some implementations, the NE may execute a set of instructions to control functional elements of the NE to perform the described operations or functions.
