[0035] Service Framework has been introduced in 5G core (5GC) . The Network Framework makes the operator mobility network more flexible and scalable. The network function (NF) can provide more than one services, e.g., registration, communication, etc. An NF service is one type of capability exposed by an NF (e.g., NF Service Producer) to other authorized NF (e.g., NF Service Consumer) through a service-based interface. NFs can offer different capabilities and different NF services to distinct consumers. Thus NFs communication based on service interface is more flexible and scalable. However the interface N2 between the next generation radio access network (NG-RAN or base station) and access and mobility management function (AMF) is not a service-based interface.

[0036] Besides, in 5G networks, operation, administration and management (OAM) can store large amount of data, e.g., performance management (PM) , key performance indicators (KPI) , Trace data, and MDT report, which may be requested by NF like network data analytics function (NWDAF) for machine learning (ML) training purpose. Currently, there is no direct interface between radio access network operation, administration and management (RAN-OAM) and 5GC NF. In this patent document, the RAN-OAM can be an application for management of base station (s) . Furthermore, in general, RAN-OAM and Core-OAM may not be provided by the same vendor. If a 5GC network function wants to collect data from RAN-OAM, it can request Core-OAM that obtains RAN-OAM data via Cross-domain OAM, which is complicated and inefficient.

[0037] This patent document proposes example techniques to support efficient data collection in network, that a NF can request / subscribe to collect data from RAN-OAM or gNB directly.

[0038] The example headings for the various sections below are used to facilitate the understanding of the disclosed subject matter and do not limit the scope of the claimed subject matter in any way. Accordingly, one or more features of one example section can be combined with one or more features of another example section. Furthermore, 5G terminology is used for the sake of clarity of explanation, but the techniques disclosed in the present document are not limited to 5G technology only, and may be used in wireless systems that implemented other protocols.

[0039] I. Introduction

[0040] I. (a) . 5G core (5GC) architecture

[0041] FIG. 1 shows an architecture of 5GC system. In this architecture, there are the following functions:

[0044] 3. Access and Mobility Management function (AMF) -This function may include the following functionalities: Registration management, Connection management, Reachability management and / or Mobility Management. This function may also perform access authentication and access authorization. The AMF cam be the non-access stratum (NAS) security termination and can relay the Session Management (SM) NAS between UE and Session Management Function (SMF) , etc.

[0045] 4. Session Management Function (SMF) -This function may include the following functionalities: session establishment, modification and release, UE internet protocol (IP) address allocation & management (including optional authorization functions) , selection and control of user plane (UP) function (UPF) , and / or downlink data notification, etc. The SMF can control the UPF via N4 interface association. The SMF can provide PDR (Packet Detection Rule) to UPF to instruct how to detect user data traffic, FAR (Forwarding Action Rule) , QER (QoS Enforcement Rule) and URR (Usage Reporting Rule) to instruct the UPF how to perform the user data traffic forwarding, QoS handling and usage reporting for the user data traffic detected by using the PDR.

[0046] 5. User plane function (UPF) -This function may include the following functionalities: serving as an anchor point for intra- / inter-radio access technology (RAT) mobility, packet routing & forwarding, traffic usage reporting, QoS handling for the user plane, downlink packet buffering and / or downlink data notification triggering, etc. General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) tunneling protocol user plane (GTP-U) tunnel can be used over N3 interface between the RAN and UPF. The GTP-U tunnel can be per PDU session. For downlink traffic the UPF may bind the downlink traffic to QoS flows within the GTP-U tunnel of the PDU session by using the FARs received from SMF. For uplink traffic, the RAN can transfer the user plane traffic to QoS flows identified by the UE.

[0047] 6. Policy Control Function (PCF) -The PCF can provide QoS policy rules to control plane functions (CPFs) to enforce the rules. The PCF (s) can transform (s) the AF requests into Policy and Charging Control (PCC) rules that apply to PDU Sessions.

[0048] 7. Unified Data Management (UDM) -The UDM can perform the generation of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Authentication and Key Agreement (AKA) Authentication Credential, access authorization based on subscription data, UE's Serving network function (NF) Registration Management (e.g. storing serving AMF for UE, storing serving SMF for UE's PDU Session) and / or Subscription management, etc. The UDM can access the Unified Data Repository (UDR) to retrieve UE subscription data and store the UE context in the UDR. UDM and UDR may be deployed together.

[0049] I. (b) . Network Data Analytics Function

[0050] Network data analytics function (NWDAF) can be a 5GC NF located on the control plane and can perform statistical data analysis (e.g., the distribution information of the datasets) and machine learning-related tasks in 5GS. The NWDAF may interact with different entities for different purposes:

[0170] ● Data format, e.g., structure, unstructured;

[0171] ● Data type, e.g., 3GPP (PM, KPI, Configuration, Alarm information and notification (fault information) , monitor (heartbeat) ) , non-3GPP (external) ;

[0172] ● Data module (e.g., the data class) , e.g., text, image, video.

[0173] Step 2: NRF responds to Data Information Registration Consumer to inform that the registration request / registration update request is success or not.

[0174] FIG. 5B shows an example process diagram for data collection request with file location responded and data stored in OAM. The step numbers mentioned below correlate to the numbers shown in FIG. 5B.

[0175] Step 1: Data Collection Consumer (e.g., NWDAF, DCCF) sends its Data Collection Request message to NRF, which may include following parameters:

[0176] ● Source ID, e.g., UE ID, NF ID, gNB ID;

[0177] ● Data requirement;

[0178] ● Data Collection Control;

[0179] ● Data Collection Filter , may include.

[0180] Details can be referred to Step 1a-1 in Example. In this example, the Consumer request to query the association between requested Data and Data Source, e.g., to find the information of gNB (s) (e.g., address) where the data required can be collected.

[0181] Step 2: NRF responses with Data Source List, a list of gNB (s) . The data storage list can identify where the data or file (s) is / are located. The NRF can determine one or more gNBs to add to the list of gNBs based on the information registered by the gNBs in the NRF.

[0182] Step 3: Data Collection Consumer sends its gNB related Data Collection Request message to gNB (s) indicated in the message of Step 2.

[0183] Step 4: gNB (s) send the Data Collection Request message to RAN-OAM which includes the notificationRecipientAddress of the Data Collection Consumer.

[0184] Step 5: Security procedure between Data collection Consumer and RAN-OAM.

[0185] Step 6: RAN-OAM determines whether existing data meets the requirements of data collection based on received data metric and data collection filter information.

[0186] Step 7: Data collection and preparation.

[0187] ● Condition 1: The Data Collection Subscription request is fulfilled, e.g., the requested data has been collected.

[0188] ○ Step 7a: RAN-OAM responds to the Consumer with file or file location. In the data collection  request message, the data collection consumer can identify the data that it needs so that the gNB can prepare the file for the data collection consumer.

[0189] ● Condition 2: The Data Collection Subscription request is not fulfilled, e.g., the requested data is not or partially collected.

[0190] ○ Step 7b-1: RAN-OAM creates ManagementDataCollection instance when the required data has not been collected. It may modify the existing ManagementDataCollection instance when the required data is partially collected.

[0191] ○ Step 7b-2: RAN-OAM sends MOI Creation / modification notification to the Consumer.
