[0002] Exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure relate generally to a pet containment system. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a pet containment system for securing a pet or an animal in a vehicle.BACKGROUND
[0003] Many people regard their pets as family members or companions. As such, pet owners often travel with their pets via automobile to vacation destinations, trips to the veterinarian, or around town. Pet transport cages or pet vests are available that cooperate with safety belts of a vehicle to prevent a pet from roaming within and / or escaping from a vehicle. However, these devices can be overly restricting and generally do not adequately secure a pet in the case of a sudden change in vehicle speed or direction. Additionally, it can be difficult to load an animal into a cage in a vehicle and / or cumbersome for some animals to wear pet vests. An improperly restrained pet is more likely to be injured and to injure occupants of a vehicle during a crash.
[0004] The foregoing background discussion is intended solely to aid the reader. It is not intended to limit the innovations described herein. Thus, the foregoing discussion should not be taken to indicate that any particular element of a prior system is unsuitable for use with the innovations described herein, nor is it intended to indicate that any element is essential in implementing the innovations described herein.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0075] A detailed description of one or more embodiments of the disclosed apparatus and method are presented herein by way of exemplification and not limitation with reference to the Figures. In the following description, like reference characters incremented by 100 refer to like elements throughout the several views of the drawings unless otherwise noted. Thus, where a component is referred to as 10 in a first embodiment, the same component in a subsequent embodiment would be referred to as 110, for example.
[0076] Referring to FIGS. 1-5, embodiments of a pet containment device 10 and 10’ applicable to the present disclosure are shown. The pet containments devices 10 and 10’ generally comprise a collapsible shell 12 / 12’ adapted to be placed on a vehicle seat when in an open configuration, and a containment structure 14 / 14’ defining a containment volume with the collapsible shell 12 / 12’ for containing a pet. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the pet containment device 10’ first and second sides SI and S2, a front or forward side F, a rear or back side R, a bottom side B and a top side T. Although not shown in other embodiments, it will be appreciated that each of the embodiment has such sides.
[0077] The collapsible shell 12 / 12’ includes a bottom shell or base member 18 / 18’ and a top shell or back member 22 / 22’ hingedly secured to each other via hubs 26 / 26’ which are supported on a crossbar 28 / 28’. It will be appreciated that a primary difference between the pet containment device 10 and 10’ is that pet containment device 10 is narrower in width than pet containment device 10’. The pet containment device 10 can have a width intended to span a single seat while the pet containment device 10’ can have a width intended to span more than one seat. Other widths and dimensions are contemplated.
[0078] The containment structure 14 / 14’ includes a static arm 30 / 30’ fixed to the bottom shell 18 / 18’ and a pivoting arm 34 / 34’ adapted for pivoting movement between a first position adjacent the bottom shell 18 / 18’ and a second position adjacent the top shell 22 / 22’ in the open configuration. The pivoting arm 34 / 34’ is secured to the hubs 26 / 26’ for pivoting movement independent of the top shell 22 / 22’. A plurality of stiffeners 40 / 40’ span between respective portions of the static arm 30 / 30’ and the pivoting arm 34 / 34’, as well as the hubs 26 / 26’. The stiffeners can be a somewhat flexible material with sufficient rigidity so as to support a mesh, net, fabric or other enclosure material (see embodiment of FIG. 6A, for example) in an expanded state when the pet containment device 10 / 10’ is in the open configuration. In someembodiments, the stiffeners 40 / 40' can be reinforcement arms that provide additional structure to the device to resist collision forces.
[0079] The pet containment devices 10 / 10’ in some embodiments may include a pair of spaced-apart ISOFIX latch arms 44 / 44’ rotatably supported on the crossbar 28 / 28’ between a stowed and deployed position. The top shell 22 / 22’ includes recesses 48 / 48 ’for receiving the ISOFIX latch arms 44 / 44’ in the stowed position. In some of the embodiments disclosed herein, the ISOFIX latch arms 44 / 44’ may be considered “rigid latch” connections to the vehicle due to the fixed length from the containment device 10 / 107110 to the distal end of the latch arms in the extended position. In other embodiments, the ISOfix latch arms 44 / 44’ may be attached to the containment device 10 / 107110 by way of straps, which may be adjustably tightened, so as to be considered “soft latch” connections to the vehicle. In some embodiments, the latch arms 44 / 44’ are omitted or replaced with other attachment mechanisms. In embodiments, various other attachment mechanisms may be provided in addition to or in lieu of the ISOFIX latch arms 44 / 44’, for example: hooks or clips for engaging vehicle isofix anchors, slots or straps for engaging a vehicle seat belt, straps for wrapping around the vehicle seat and / or seatback, and the like.
[0080] The pivoting net animal containment device 10’ which spans between one and two seats (i.e. oversized) with the ISOFIX latch arms central in the device allows for an increased pet size while only utilizing one seat’s ISOFIX latch anchors. Since some vehicles do not include center seat ISOFIX latch anchors, this can increase versatility regardless of the user’s vehicle.
[0081] In this embodiment, the static arm / pivoting arm are on the exterior perimeter of the bottom shell and top shell and have a custom geometry to decrease thickness. Doing so increases the internal width of the containment volume while maintaining a smaller wall thickness. In various embodiments, such as the embodiment of FIGS. 4 and 5, the pivoting netanimal containment device 10’ includes ISOFIX latch arms 44 / 44' that pivot inwards to a stowed configuration (e.g., the distal ends of the ISOFIX latch arms are proximate to each other when stowed).
[0082] Referring to FIGS. 6A-29 embodiments of a pet containment device 110 applicable to the present disclosure are shown. In certain embodiments, disclosed is a pivoting net animal containment device 110 which spans between one and two seats (i.e. oversized) with the ISOFIX latch arms 144 central in the device. The size of the pivoting net animal containment device 110 allows for an increased pet size while only utilizing one seat’s ISOFIX latches. Since some vehicles do not include center seat ISOFIX latch anchors, this can increase versatility regardless of the user’s vehicle.
[0083] The pet containment device 110 is similar to the pet containment devices 10 / 10’ described above and includes a bottom shell or base 118, a top shell or back 122, and a pivoting arm 134 hingedly secured via hubs 126. The pet containment device 110 in this embodiment further includes a first actuator 150 (e.g., see FIG. 6D), a first lock member 154 (e.g., see FIG. 10), a second actuator 158 (see e.g., FIG. 8), and at least one second lock member 162 (e.g., see FIG. 26. A netting enclosure material 166 is also shown at least partially supported by a reinforcement arm 140. The first lock member 154 is configured to lock the top shell 122 to the bottom shell 1 18 when the top shell 122 is in the storage (closed) position. The first actuator 150 is configured to release the first lock member 154 to allow the top shell 122 to transition from the stowed (closed) position to the use (open) position before the pivoting arm 134 is moved to the use position. The at least one second lock member 162 is configured to lock the ISOFIX latches arms 144 in a retracted (stowed) position. The ISOFIX latch arms 144 are configured to transition between the retracted (stowed) position and an extended (deployed) position for connecting to a vehicle anchor. The second actuator 158 is configured to release the at least one second lock member 162 to allow the ISOFIX latch arms 144 to transition fromthe retracted (stowed) position to the extended (deployed) position. The operation of the actuators and lock members are described in the following paragraphs.
[0084] Referring to FIG. 6D and applicable to any of the embodiments disclosed herein, the pet containment device 110 provides a storage (closed) position with several benefits to the user. The storage position is very compact relative to the size of dog that may be contained, allowing for the pet containment device 110 to be easily stored when not in used, for example in a vehicle trunk, vehicle foot well, beneath a vehicle seat, in a closet or garage, or the like.
[0085] With reference to FIGS. 10-15, the first lock member 154 includes a pin carriage 170, a first plate 172 and a second plate 174. The pin carriage 170 is supported on the crossbar 128, the first plate 172 is fixed to the pivoting arm 134 and the second plate 174 is fixed to the top shell 122. A hub cover 175 is illustrates in FIG. 10 which encloses the firs lock member 154. The hub cover 175 is omitted in FIGS 11-15 for illustrative purposes.
[0086] In the stored (collapsed) position, and as seen in FIG. 11, pins 176 of the pin carriage 170 are received in respective radial slots 178a / 178b in each of the first and second plates 172 and 174 thereby restricting relative rotation between the first and second plates 172 and 174 and, consequently, rotation of the bottom shell 118 relatively to the top shell 122.
[0087] When the first actuator 150 is pulled, and as seen in FIG. 12, a cable 179 (see FIGS> 20-21) connected to the pin carriage 170 shifts the pin carriage radially such that the pins 176 are moved in a radial direction to a position in-line with circumferential slots 180a / 180b of the first and second plates 172 and 174. In this position, the top shell 122 is released and can be moved to the open position shown in FIG. 13, with the pivoting arm 134 remaining in the stowed position. By virtue of the corresponding shapes and positions of the radial and circumferential slots 178a / 178b and circumferential slots 180a / 180b, the pins 176 align with the circumferential slots 180a / 180b after opening the top shell 122 thereby allowing thepivoting arm 134 to be moved to the open position without further actuation of the first actuator150, as seen in FIG. 14.
[0088] It will be appreciated that an elongate hole 182 in the pin carriage 170 allows the pin carriage to shift radially relative to the crossbar 128 when acted upon by the cable 179. A first and second biasing element 177 (for example a spring shown in FIG. 10, or other resilient member) urge the pin carriage 170 radially towards the locked position of FIG. 11 (i.e., in the opposite direction of the arrows in FIG. 12).
[0089] When the pivoting arm 134 is moved to the open position adjacent the top shell 122, the first plate 172 rotates until the radial slots 180a / 180b of the first and second plates 172 and 174 are aligned with each other and the pins 176, as seen in FIG. 15. In this position, the spring bias of the biasing elements 177 returns the pins 176 in a radial direction into the radial slots 180a / 180b thereby fixing the top shell 122 and the pivoting arm 134 against rotation relative to the bottom shell 118.
[0090] To secure an animal in the enclosure 110, a user will squeeze the first actuator 150 located on the back of the top shell 122, releasing it from the pivoting arm 134, and rotate the top shell 122 to the open position. The top shell 122 will be secured in this position by detents 190a / l 90b located on the top shell 122 and bottom shell 1 18. Next, the user can rotate the pivoting arm 134 outwards / upwards from the bottom shell 1 18 and re-secure it in the top shell 122. Rotation of the pivoting arm 134 directly controls the rotational position of the soft goods (e.g., net 166) and, by proxy, the reinforcement arm 140. In an alternative embodiment, the reinforcement arm 140 may be locked into position rather than being controlled by the soft goods.
[0091] FIGS. 16-19 illustrate the enclosure 110 in an open configuration with the first actuator 150 in an engaged position (FIGS. 16 and 17) and a disengaged position (FIGS. 18 and 19). FIGS. 20-24 illustrate the details of the first actuator 150 and a lock 194. The lock 194 isprovided for securing the pivoting arm 134 to the top shell 122 in the open configuration. The lock 194 is configured to be released by the first actuator 150 such that a single user motion releases the pins 176 for rotation of the top shell 122 and the lock 194.
[0092] The first actuator 150 includes a movable actuator member 198 configured to be manipulated by a user. The movable actuator member 198 in this embodiment is adapted for sliding movement relative to the top shell 122 such that a user can squeeze the movable actuator member 198 upward (when the device is in the open configuration) or forward (when the device is in the closed configuration). The lock 190 generally comprises a movable latch member 204 coupled to the movable actuator member 198 by first and second cable pulls 208. The movable latch member 204 is movable between a latched position (FIG. 20) where it is received in a pocket or recess 212 of the pivoting arm 134 to restrict relative movement between the pivoting arm 134 and the top shell 122, and an unlatched position (FIG. 21) where it is retracted from the recess 212 such that relative movement between the pivoting arm 134 and the top shell 122 is possible. In this embodiment, the recess 212 is provided in a reinforcement bar 214 secured to the pivoting arm 134
[0093] The cable pulls 208 are pivotally secured to the top shell 122. Each cable pull 208 includes a first radial arm 216 coupled to the movable actuator member 198 by a pin 218 received in a slot 220 of the movable actuator member 198. Each cable pull 208 includes a second radial arm 222 coupled to respective slots 224 on opposite sides of the movable latch member 204. Each cable pull 202 includes a third radial arm 226 located between the first and second radial arms 216 and 220 to which a cable 179 is connected.
[0094] In use, when a user pulls the movable actuator member 198 of the first actuator 150 upward, the resulting motion pulls the movable latch member 204 downward to the disengaged position while simultaneously pulling the cables 179 as the third radial arms 226 rotate towards each other. In this manner, both the lock 194 and the pins 174 are moved to anunlatched / unlocked position. The movable actuator member 198 is biased towards the latched / locked position by the action of the biasing members 177.
[0095] Turning to FIGS. 25-29, the second actuator 158 and second lock members 162 are illustrated. The second actuator 158 includes a movable actuator member 230 configured to be manipulated by a user. The movable actuator member 230 in this embodiment is adapted for sliding movement relative to the bottom shell 118 such that a user can pull the movable actuator member 230 outward in the direction of the arrow in FIG. 27 towards the front of the device 110. First and second cable pulls 234 are pivotally secured to the bottom shell 118. Each cable pull 234 includes a first radial arm 238 coupled to the movable actuator member 230, for example in the same manner as the cable pulls 208. Each cable pull 234 includes a second radial arm 246 to which a respective cable 250 is connected.
[0096] The second lock members 162 generally comprise a movable latch member 254 coupled to a respective cable 250. Each of the ISOFIX latch arms 144 are pivotally secured to the bottom shell 118 and include a latch arm body 258 having first and second detents 262 and 264 adapted to receive a respective movable latch member 254. The movable latch members 254 are biased towards a latched position engaged such that they automatically engage the detents when aligned therewith.
[0097] In use, when a user pulls the movable actuator member 230 of the second actuator 158 from the position of FIG. 26 to the position of FIG. 27, the cable pulls 234 rotate thereby retracting the movable latch members 254 to an unlatched position to allow rotation of the ISOFIX latch arms 144 between the stowed and deployed positions. The movable latch members 254 are biased so as to secure the ISOFIX latch arms 144 in both the stowed and deployed position.
[0098] In FIGS. 30-40, various embodiment of pet containment devices having adjustable reinforcement arms are illustrated. The adjustable reinforcement arms can be extended orretracted to change a volume of the pet containment device. In some embodiments, the extension and / or retraction is performed manually by a user. The second end 672 of the linkage 666 will slide relative to the bottom shell 618 according to a position of the reinforcement arm (opened, closed) such that the extendible / retractable component 644 is drawn in by the cable 660 when extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 640 is moved to the stowed / collapsed position. In this embodiment, extension of the extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 640 is done manually by a user as the extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 640 is moved to a use position. The pet containment device 610 includes a net 666 or other enclosure element.
[0102] In FIGS. 34-36, an embodiment an embodiment of a pet containment device 710 is illustrated having an extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 740. The reinforcement arm 740 includes extendible component 744 supported for telescoping movement on a pivoting arm 748 mounted to the hub / bottom shell 718. The two pieces of the extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 740 are connected by a pin 750 extending through a slot 752 in the extendable component 744 such that the extendable component 744 can slide relative to the base component 748. A spring 760 is interposed between the two pieces of the extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 740 and biases the extendible component 744outward towards an extended state. The pet containment device 710 includes a net 766 or other enclosure element.
[0103] In FIGS 37-40, an embodiment a pet containment device 810 is illustrated having an extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 840. The reinforcement arm 840 includes extendible component 844 supported for telescoping movement on a pivoting arms 848 mounted to the bottom shell 818. The two pieces of the extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 840 are releasably connected by a spring pin 850. The spring pin 850 is supported in the extendible component 844 and can be received in a first or second hole 854 or 856 in the pivoting arm 848 to secure the two pieces of the extendible / retractable reinforcement arm 840 in an extended or retracted state. Additional holes can be provided to allow further adjustment options. The pet containment device 810 includes a net 866 or other enclosure element.
[0104] In the above-described embodiments, the reinforcing arms can be considered primary reinforcing arms. Turning to FIGS. 41-44, embodiments of the present disclosure provide a pet containment device 910 including secondary reinforcement arms / structure are illustrated. The secondary reinforcement arms can be positioned between the bottom shell and the primary reinforcement arm of a pet containment device when in the use position. In one embodiment, the secondary reinforcement arm is identical to the primary reinforcement arm. In another embodiment, the secondary reinforcement arm is different than the primary reinforcement bar.
[0105] The embodiments of FIGS. 41-44 provide reinforcement member(s) at different locations to improve crash testing performance in protecting a pet occupant of the device. In some embodiments, the reinforcement arm may be shifted such that it is located <45deg from the bottom shell. Alternatively, there may be an additional reinforcement arm added to the containment device at an angle at approximately 45deg. >45 deg, or also <45deg from the bottom shell. The pet containment device 910 includes a net 966 or other enclosure element.
[0106] One or more of the reinforcement arms may be considered a primary reinforcement arm that is substantially rigid and configured to provide crash protection by retaining the animal occupant within the device in the event of a crash. Such a primary reinforcement arm may be formed of metal such as steel or aluminum. The animal containment device may also include one or more secondary reinforcement arms that is used to hold up and shape the net, but does not necessarily significantly affect crash performance.
[0107] In embodiments, a primary' reinforcement arm may be located at about less than 45 degrees from a plane defined by the bottom shell, about 40 degrees or less, about 35 degrees or less, about 30 degrees or less, about 25 degrees or less, about 20 degrees or less, or about 15 degrees or less.
[0108] In embodiments, when the containment device is in the open position with the net over the animal, the reinforcement arm may sit <45deg from the bottom shell. Alternatively, there may be more than one reinforcement arm. Both reinforcement arms could be rigid and be considered first and second primary reinforcement arms. Alternatively, one may be rigid (primary reinforcement arm) and the other semi-rigid (secondary reinforcement arm).
[0109] There may also be a front reinforcement bar which can pivot about a pivot axis to a position forward / outward (e.g. outside) of the perimeter of the bottom shell or inward / backward (e g. inside the perimeter of the bottom shell - as shown). If it pivots outward, the front reinforcement bar may be usable as a handle when the containment device is collapsed for storage. In other embodiments, the front bar may be mounted on an exterior portion of the bottom shell, for example at exterior sides of the sidewalls. The front bar may be usable as a handle when the containment device is in the collapsed / closed position. In some embodiments, the front reinforcement bar may be provided and none of the reinforcement arms are substantially rigid and crashworthy, in other words, all of the reinforcement arms in such embodiments would be secondary reinforcement arms.
[0110] In FIGS. 41 and 42, a pet containment device 910 is illustrated with a primary reinforcing arm 940 and a second primary' reinforcing arm 944. The second primary reinforcing arm 944 can be identical to any of the above-described reinforcing arms and can be positioned between the bottom shell 918 and the primary reinforcement arm 940 (FIG. 41) or above the primary reinforcement arm 940 (FIG. 42) in the deployed configuration of the pet containment device 910.[OHl] In FIGS. 43 and 44, a pet containment device 1010 is illustrated with a primary' reinforcing arm 1040 and a secondary reinforcing arm 1044. The secondary' reinforcement arm 1044 is pivotally mounted to a front portion of the bottom shell 1018 and is pivotable from a collapsed position (FIG. 43) to a deployed / use position (FIG. 44). As noted above, the secondary reinforcement arm 1044 can be used as a carry handle when deployed with the top shell 1020 in a closed position.
[0112] In FIGS. 45-49, another exemplary' pet containment device 1110 is illustrated. The pet containment device 11 10 is similar to the pet containment device 110 described above. In this embodiment, however, one of the slots in the first lock member 1154 is shorter resulting in the net partially raising when the device shell is opened.
[0113] In this embodiment, the first lock member 1 154 includes a pin carriage 1 170, a first plate 1 172 and a second plate 1 174. The pin carriage 1 170 is supported on a crossbar 1 128, the first plate 1172 is fixed to the pivoting arm 1134 and the second plate 1174 is fixed to the top shell 1122. A hub cover 1175 is illustrated in FIG. 45 which encloses the first lock member 1154. The hub cover 1175 is omitted in FIGS 46-49 for illustrative purposes.
[0114] In the stored (collapsed) position, and as seen in FIG. 46, pins 1 176 of the pin carriage 1170 are received in respective radial slots 1178a / l 178b in each of the first and second plates 1172 and 1174 thereby restricting relative rotation between the first and second plates1172 and 1174 and, consequently, rotation of the bottom shell 1118 relative to the top shell 1122.
[0115] Like the pet containment device 110, when a first actuator can be pulled, to shift the pin carriage 1170 radially such that the pins 1176 are moved in a radial direction to a position in-line with circumferential slots 1180a / 1180b of the first and second plates 1172 and 1174. In this position, the top shell 1122 is released and can be moved to the open position shown in FIG. 46, with the pivoting arm 1134 remaining in the stowed position.
[0116] When the top shell 1122 is further pivoted to the fully open position of Figs. 48 and 49, the pivoting arm 1134 automatically partially deploys to the position shown in FIG. 48. This is achieved because the circumferential slots 1180a / 1180b in the first plate 1172 are shorter than in the pet containment device 110 such that further opening of the top shell 1122 rotates the pins 1176 which rotate the first plate 1170 (as they push against the ends of the circumferential slots in the first plate) which in turn partially deploys the pivoting arm 1134 to the position shown in FIG. 48. In this position, the pet containment device 11 10 can be used to contain a pet prior to the pivoting arm 1134 being moved manually to the position shown in FIG. 49. Once in the position shown in FIG. 48, the pins 1176 engage in radial slots 1 178a / l 178b in the first and second plates 1 172 and 1 172 thereby locking the top shell 1 122 and the pivoting arm 1 134 in the open position with the net 1 188 in place.
