AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

RedCap UEs in wireless communications face challenges with cell reselection on initial bandwidth parts (BWPs) that lack cell-defining synchronization signal blocks (CD-SSBs), leading to disruptions in random access channel procedures and inefficient cell reselection processes.

Method used

Proposed schemes enable RedCap UEs to perform cell reselection on reduced capacity specific initial BWPs with non-cell-defining synchronization signal blocks (NCD-SSBs) by measuring neighbor cells on the same frequency, evaluating reselection criteria, and switching back to CD-SSBs to acquire system information blocks (SIBs) for seamless RACH procedures.

Benefits of technology

The proposed schemes allow RedCap UEs to efficiently perform cell reselection, reducing RACH failure rates and call setup delays, thereby enhancing user experience.

Abstract

Techniques pertaining to cell reselection on reduced capacity (RedCap) specific initial bandwidth part (BWP) with non-cell-defining synchronization signal block (NCD-SSB) in wireless communications are described. An apparatus (e.g., a RedCap user equipment (UE)) determines that a cell reselection condition is met during a random access channel (RACH) procedure in a RedCap specific initial bandwidth part (BWP). In response to the determining, the apparatus performs cell reselection.

Description

CELL RESELECTION ON REDUCED CAPACITY SPECIFIC INITIAL BANDWIDTH PART WITH NON-CELL-DEFINING SYNCHRONIZATION SIGNAL BLOCKCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure is part of a non-provisional application claiming the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 661,632, filed 19 June 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to wireless communications and, more particularly, to cell reselection on reduced capacity (RedCap) specific initial bandwidth part (BWP) with non-cell-defining synchronization signal block (NCD-SSB) in wireless communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims listed below and are not admitted as prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0004] In wireless communications such as mobile communications in accordance with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, a network can configure reduced-capacity user equipment (s) (RedCap UEs) in a special initial BWP (iBWP) and dedicated BWP which are different from normal initial BWP and dedicated BWP for normal UEs. The initial BWP and dedicated BWP for RedCap UEs are normally associated with only NCD-SSB which has no system information block (SIB) transmitted. RedCap specific iBWP can be configured as follows: (a) SIB1 or (b) RRCReconfiguration (reconfiguration with synchronization for handover) . NCD-SSB can be configured by RRCReconfiguration in BWP-DownlinkDedicated, using downlinkBWP-ToAddModList. When a UE is in a RedCap specific iBWP for a RRC connection setup request (or for a resume request or reestablishment request) with only NCD-SSB, it is unclear as to how the UE could perform cell reselection.

[0005] Currently, the 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 38.331 Section 5.3.3.3 does not require cell reselection. It stipulates that, if the UE is a RedCap UE and the initial downlink (DL) BWP for RedCap is not associated with cell-defining SSB (CD-SSB) , the UE may continue cell reselection related measurements as well as cell reselection evaluation; otherwise, the UE is to continue cell reselection related measurements as well as cell reselection evaluation. If the conditions for cell reselection are fulfilled, the UE is to perform cell r-selection as specified in Section 5.3.3.6. Moreover, a change request (CR) has been submitted to update the 3GPP specification with a motivation that, if a UE is in a separate DL initial BWP without CD-SSB, the UE should be able to choose not to switch back to a legacy initial BWP for cell reselection related measurement, which is not supported in the BWP without CD-SSB. Continuing the cell reselection may not be that critical for a RedCap UE just submitting the critical RRCSetupRequest / RRCResumeRequest message, considering that the UE needs to receive the RRCSetup / RRCResume message from the network on the separate DL BWP.

[0006] Accordingly, under current approaches, the UE does not perform cell reselection in a random access channel (RACH) procedure in the iBWP without CD-SSB. Alternatively, the UE needs to switch to another normal iBWP to measure a neighbor cell’s CD-SSB, which could cause disruption on the RACH on RedCap specific iBWP.

[0007] Therefore, there is a need for a solution of cell reselection on RedCap specific iBWP with NCD-SSB in wireless communications.SUMMARY

[0008] The following summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be limiting in any way. That is, the following summary is provided to introduce concepts, highlights, benefits and advantages of the novel and non-obvious techniques described herein. Selected implementations are further described below in the detailed description. Thus, the following summary is not intended to identify essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for use in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0009] An objective of the present disclosure is to propose solutions or schemes that address the issue (s) described herein. More specifically, various schemes proposed in the present disclosure pertain to cell reselection on RedCap specific iBWP with NCD-SSB in wireless communications. It is believed that implementations of the various proposed schemes may address or otherwise alleviate the aforementioned issue (s) .

[0010] For instance, under the proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, new procedures may be implemented to enable RedCap UEs to perform cell reselection in an initial RACH procedure on RedCap specific initial BWP with non-cell-defining SSB. The proposed schemes allow RedCap UEs to measure neighbor cells in the same NCD-SSB frequency and evaluate cell reselection with configuration from a serving cell’s SIB or UE proprietary configuration. Additionally, the proposed schemes allow RedCap UEs to store a neighbor’s RedCap initial BWP configuration and use that configuration to speed up the RACH procedure after cell reselection. Moreover, the proposed schemes allow RedCap UEs to store the neighbor cell’s RedCap NCD-SSB frequencies and use those frequencies to measure the neighbor cell to trigger cell reselection. Furthermore, the proposed schemes allow a network to configure neighbor NCD-SSB frequencies to trigger cell reselection.

[0011] In one aspect, a method may involve an apparatus (e.g., a RedCap mobile device / UE) determining that a cell reselection condition is met during a RACH procedure in a RedCap specific initial BWP. In response to the determining, the method may involve the apparatus performing cell reselection.

[0012] In another aspect, an apparatus may include a transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly and a processor coupled to the transceiver. The processor may determine that a cell reselection condition is met during a RACH procedure in a RedCap specific initial BWP. In response to the determining, the processor may perform cell reselection.

[0013] It is noteworthy that, although description provided herein may be in the context of certain radio access technologies, networks, and network topologies for wireless communication, such as 5th Generation (5G)  / New Radio (NR) mobile communications, 6th Generation (6G) mobile communications and beyond, the proposed concepts, schemes and any variation (s)  / derivative (s) thereof may be implemented in, for and by other types of radio access technologies, networks and network topologies such as, for example and without limitation, 4th Generation (4G) Evolved Packet System (EPS) , Long-Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro, Internet-of-Things (IoT) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) , Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) , vehicle-to-everything (V2X) , and non-terrestrial network (NTN) communications. Thus, the scope of the present disclosure is not limited to the examples described herein.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Overview

[0026] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to cell reselection on RedCap specific iBWP with NCD-SSB in wireless communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly.

[0027] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 ~ FIG. 10 illustrate examples of implementation of various proposed schemes in network environment 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The following description of various proposed schemes is provided with reference to FIG. 1 ~ FIG. 10.

[0028] Referring to part (A) of FIG. 1, network environment 100 may involve a UE 110, such as a mobile device or smartphone, in wireless communication with a wireless network 120 as part of a communication network. The wireless network 120 may comprise one or more public land mobile networks (PLMNs) including 5G / NR domain and, optionally, 4G / LTE domain and / or 2nd Generation / 3rd Generation (2G / 3G) domain. UE 110 may be a RedCap UE or mobile device in wireless communication with wireless network 120 via a network node 125 (e.g., a satellite or a base station such as an eNB, gNB or transmit-receive point (TRP) ) . Referring to part (B) of FIG. 1, network 120 may configure UE 110 in a special initial BWP and dedicated BWP which are different from normal initial BWP and dedicated BWP for normal UEs. The initial BWP and dedicated BWP for UE 110 may be associated with only NCD-SSB which has no SIB (including SIB1) transmitted. The RedCap specific iBWP may be configured via either SIB1 or RRCReconfiguration. UE 110, as a RedCap UE, may monitor CD-SSB to obtain SIB1 when in an idle / inactive mode. Wireless network 120 may configure the NCD-SSB to UE 110 via radio resource control (RRC) signaling when UE 110 is in a connected mode.

[0029] In network environment 100, UE 110 and the wireless network 120 may implement various schemes pertaining to cell reselection on RedCap specific iBWP with NCD-SSB in accordance with the present disclosure, as described herein. It is noteworthy that, while the various proposed schemes may be individually or separately described below, in actual implementations some or all of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented jointly. Of course, each of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented individually or separately.

[0030] FIG. 2 illustrates an example scenario 200 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 200 may pertain to a procedure of cell reselection in RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP. At step (1) of scenario 200, assuming the same NCD-SSB frequency (herein interchangeably denoted as “ncd-ssb-frequency” ) and SSB frequency (herein interchangeably denoted as “ssb-frequency” ) of neighbor RedCap cells, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may perform search and measurement of neighbor RedCap cells, e.g., physical cell identity (PCI) = y, on the same ncd-ssb-frequency as that of a RedCap specific serving cell with PCI = x, while monitoring and decoding DL RACH messages concurrently because both are in the same radio frequency (RF) bandwidth. At step (2) of scenario 200, once a cell is detected, the UE may evaluate intra-frequency cell reselection using any of the following criteria (assuming SIB3 is not used as it is for cell specific threshold, but could be used, if needed) : (a) Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst (with “Rs” denoting a measured reference signal received power (RSRP) of a serving cell, “Rn” denoting a measured RSRP of a neighbor cell, and “Q-Hyst” denoting a threshold from SIB2) ; (b) poor serving cell condition as defined by: Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for a poor serving cell and a non-volatile (NV) configuration of the UE) ; and (c) poor serving cell and good neighbor cell condition with proprietary thresholds as follows: Rs < Rn –TH2 AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for the poor serving cell, “TH2” denoting a threshold for the good neighbor cell to be better than the serving cell, and both “TH1” and “TH2” being NV configuration of the UE) . At step (3) of scenario 200, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI = y, the UE may need to switch back to the serving CD-SSB frequency to search and detect for the same PCI = y. At step (4) of scenario 200, the UE may acquire SIB1 of the new serving cell of that PCI = y. At step (5) of scenario 200, the UE may use new iBWP resource (s) configured in the SIB1 to perform a RACH procedure on the new RedCap cell.

[0031] FIG. 3 illustrates an example scenario 300 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 300 may pertain to a procedure of cell reselection in RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP. In scenario 300, optimization may be possible if NCD-SSB of a neighbor cell configures a CD-SSB frequency, then a UE (e.g., UE 110) may not assume the same SSB frequency as that of a serving cell. At step (1) of scenario 300, assuming the same ncd-ssb-frequency for neighbor RedCap cells, the UE may perform search and measurement of neighbor RedCap cells, e.g., PCI = y, on the same ncd-ssb-frequency as that of a RedCap specific serving cell with PCI = x, while monitoring and decoding DL RACH messages concurrently because both are in the same RF bandwidth. At step (2) of scenario 300, once a cell is detected, the UE may evaluate intra-frequency cell reselection using any of the following criteria (assuming SIB3 is not used as it is for cell specific threshold, but could be used, if needed) : (a) Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst (with “Rs” denoting a measured RSRP of a serving cell, “Rn” denoting a measured RSRP of a neighbor cell, and “Q-Hyst” denoting a threshold from SIB2) ; (b) poor serving cell condition as defined by: Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst AND Rs <TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for a poor serving cell and a non-volatile (NV) configuration of the UE) ; and (c) poor serving cell and good neighbor cell condition with proprietary thresholds as follows: Rs < Rn –TH2 AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for the poor serving cell, “TH2” denoting a threshold for the good neighbor cell better than the serving cell, and both “TH1” and “TH2” being NV configuration of the UE) . At step (3) of scenario 200, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI = y, the UE may need to switch back to the serving CD-SSB frequency of the target cell as configured by NCD-SSB. At step (4) of scenario 300, the UE may acquire SIB1 of the new serving cell of that PCI = y. At step (5) of scenario 300, the UE may use new iBWP resource (s) configured in the SIB1 to perform a RACH procedure on the new RedCap cell.

[0032] FIG. 4 illustrates an example scenario 400 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 4400 may pertain to a procedure of cell reselection in RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP. In scenario 400, optimization may be achieved in case that a UE (e.g., UE 110) can store the neighbor cell’s SIB1 (including iBWP configuration) , where the neighbor cell is identified by a cell global identity (CGI) (or PCT + ssb-frequency) . This is because a serving cell’s CGI, PCI, SSB frequency, and SIB1 may be known when the UE camps on the serving cell. The neighbor cell’s CGI, PCI, SSB frequency, and SIB1 may be known when the UE performs cell reselection to select this neighbor cell. It is noteworthy that, in the present disclosure, CGI = public land mobile network (PLMN) identity (ID) + cell ID.

[0033] At step (1) of scenario 400, assuming the same NCD-SSB frequency and SSB frequency of neighbor RedCap cells, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may perform search and measurement of neighbor RedCap cells, e.g., PCI = y, on the same ncd-ssb-frequency as that of a RedCap specific serving cell with PCI = x, while monitoring and decoding DL RACH messages concurrently because both are in the same RF bandwidth. At step (2) of scenario 400, once a cell is detected, the UE may evaluate intra-frequency cell reselection using any of the following criteria (assuming SIB3 is not used as it is for cell specific threshold, but could be used, if needed) : (a) Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst (with “Rs” denoting a measured RSRP of a serving cell, “Rn” denoting a measured RSRP of a neighbor cell, and “Q-Hyst” denoting a threshold from SIB2) ; (b) poor serving cell condition as defined by: Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for a poor serving cell and a non-volatile (NV) configuration of the UE) ; and (c) poor serving cell and good neighbor cell condition with proprietary thresholds as follows: Rs < Rn –TH2 AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for the poor serving cell, “TH2” denoting a threshold for the good neighbor cell better than the serving cell, and both “TH1” and “TH2” being NV configuration of the UE) . At step (3) of scenario 400, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI = y, the UE may need to switch back to the serving CD-SSB frequency to search and detect for the same PCI = y. At step (4) of scenario 400, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI= y , the UE may user the stored SIB1 of the neighbor cell of PCI = y to obtain the iBWP of RedCap. Then, the UE may use new iBWP resource (s) configured in the SIB1 to perform a RACH procedure on the new RedCap specific BWP.

[0034] FIG. 5 illustrates an example scenario 500 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 500 may pertain to a procedure of cell reselection in RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP. In scenario 500, cell reselection may be enhanced to different NCD-SSB frequency if it is within the same iBWP. To achieve this, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may store information of the NCD-SSB frequency in addition to SIB1. At step (1) of scenario 500, assuming NCD-SSB frequencies of neighbor RedCap cells are within the same iBWP, the UE may search and measure neighbor RedCap cells on the same iBWP of a RedCap specific serving cell with PCI = x, while monitoring and decoding DL RACH messages concurrently because both are in the same RF bandwidth. At step (2) of scenario 500, once a cell is detected, the UE may evaluate intra-frequency cell reselection using any of the following criteria (assuming SIB3 is not used as it is for cell specific threshold, but could be used, if needed) : (a) Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst (with “Rs” denoting a measured RSRP of a serving cell, “Rn” denoting a measured RSRP of a neighbor cell, and “Q-Hyst” denoting a threshold from SIB2) ; (b) poor serving cell condition as defined by: Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst AND Rs <TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for a poor serving cell and a non-volatile (NV) configuration of the UE) ; and (c) poor serving cell and good neighbor cell condition with proprietary thresholds as follows: Rs < Rn –TH2 AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for the poor serving cell, “TH2” denoting a threshold for the good neighbor cell better than the serving cell, and both “TH1” and “TH2” being NV configuration of the UE) . At step (3) of scenario 500, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI = y, the UE may need to switch back to the serving CD-SSB frequency to search and detect for the same PCI = y. At step (4) of scenario 500, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI= y , the UE may user the stored SIB1 of the neighbor cell of PCI = y to obtain the iBWP of RedCap. Then, the UE may use new iBWP resource (s) configured in the SIB1 to perform a RACH procedure on the new RedCap specific BWP.

[0035] FIG. 6 illustrates an example scenario 600 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 6600 may pertain to storing information of NCD-SSB frequencies associated with CGIs. Under the proposed scheme, there may be two situations. In a first situation (labeled as (1) in FIG. 6) , a UE (e.g., UE 110) may access a cell (e.g., Cell x) from idle or inactive mode (knowing CGI, PCI = x and ssb-frequency) and then receive reconfiguration to measure this RedCap cell as serving cell measurement (knowing ncd-ssb-frequency) . In a second situation (labeled as (2) in FIG. 6) , UE handover to a target cell (e.g., Cell y) in RRCReconfiguration may involve the following: (a) ncd-ssb-frequency may be configured in a first active BWP; (b) this target cell’s PCI may be configured in servingCellConfigCommon; (c) this target cell’s CGI may be configured in dedicatedSIB1-Delivery; and (d) ssb-frequency may be configured in DownlinkConfigCommon → FrequencyInfoDL → absoluteFrequencySSB.

[0036] FIG. 7 illustrates an example scenario under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 700 may pertain to a network providing NCD-SSB frequency information. Under the proposed scheme, a network (e.g., network 120) may provide NCD-SSB frequency information in SIB1, SIB2 and SIB4. For instance, SIB1 may be utilized to configure ncd-ssb-freq if there is one. SIB2 may be utilized to configure other ncd-ssb-freq (s) if there are additional one(s) other than the one in SIB1. SIB4 may be utilized to configure an inter-frequency ncd-ssb-freq list. With this information from the network, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may know whether or not to search and detect a neighbor cell and perform cell reselection, with the same reselection parameters as in SIB2 and SIB4.

[0037] FIG. 8 illustrates an example scenario under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 800 may pertain to a procedure of cell reselection in RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP. At step (1) of scenario 800, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may use SIB1 / SIB2 received from a network (e.g., network 120) to obtain NCD-SSB frequencies of neighbor RedCap cells within the same iBWP, and the UE may search and measure neighbor RedCap cells on the same iBWP of a RedCap specific serving cell with PCI = x. At step (2) of scenario 800, once a cell is detected, the UE may evaluate intra-frequency cell reselection using any of the following criteria: (a) Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst (with “Rs” denoting a measured RSRP of a serving cell, “Rn” denoting a measured RSRP of a neighbor cell, and “Q-Hyst” denoting a threshold from SIB2) ; (b) poor serving cell condition as defined by: Rs < Rn –Q-Hyst AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for a poor serving cell and a non-volatile (NV) configuration of the UE) ; and (c) poor serving cell and good neighbor cell condition with proprietary thresholds as follows: Rs < Rn –TH2 AND Rs < TH1 (with “TH1” denoting a threshold for the poor serving cell, “TH2” denoting a threshold for the good neighbor cell, and both “TH1” and “TH2” being NV configuration of the UE) . At step (3) of scenario 800, once triggering reselection to a target cell with PCI = y, the UE may need to switch back to the serving CD-SSB frequency of the target cell as configured by NCD-SSB. At step (4) of scenario 800, the UE may acquire SIB1 of the new serving cell of that PCI = y. At step (5) of scenario 300, the UE may use new iBWP resource (s) configured in the SIB1 to perform a RACH procedure on the new RedCap cell.

[0038] In view of the above, key features of the various proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be summarized below.

[0039] Under one or more proposed schemes, during a RACH procedure, a mobile device (e.g., UE 110) may measure on the same ncd-ssb-frequency, evaluate reselection criteria, and, when a cell reselection condition is met, switch back to the same ssb-frequency to acquire SIB1 of a target cell PCI, and use the newly acquired SIB1 to perform RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP.

[0040] Under one or more proposed schemes, during a RACH procedure, a mobile device (e.g., UE 110) may measure in the same ncd-ssb-frequency, evaluate cell reselection criteria, and, when a cell reselection condition is met, switch back to a ssb-frequency as scheduled by NCD-SSB of a target cell to acquire SIB1 of the target cell PCI, and use the newly acquired SIB1 to perform RACH in a RedCap specific iBWP.

[0041] Under one or more proposed schemes, a mobile device (e.g., UE 110) may store a neighbor cell’s RedCap specific initial BWP configuration. During a RACH procedure, the device may measure neighbor cells in the same ncd-ssb-frequency, evaluate reselection criteria, and, when a cell reselection condition is met, use a target cell’s RedCap specific iBWP from a stored SIB1 to perform RACH.

[0042] Under one or more proposed schemes, a mobile device (e.g., UE 110) may store a neighbor cell’s RedCap specific initial BWP configuration and ncd-ssb frequencies. During a RACH procedure, the device may measure neighbor cells in the same RedCap specific iBWP with stored ncd-ssb frequencies, evaluate reselection criteria, and, when a cell reselection condition is met, use a target cell’s RedCap specific iBWP from a stored SIB1 to perform RACH.

[0043] Under one or more proposed schemes, a network (e.g., network 120) may configure ncd-ssb-frequencies in SIBx. During RACH, a mobile device (e.g., UE 110) may measure neighbor cells in the same RedCap specific iBWP using serving and neighbor ncd-ssb-frequencies in SIBx, evaluate reselection criteria, and, when a cell reselection condition is met, acquire SIB1 to perform RACH.

[0044] Advantageously, under one or more of the proposed schemes, a RedCap mobile device / UE may perform cell reselection during an initial access for a RedCap specific initial BWP. Consequently, both RACH failure rate and call setup delay may be reduced, thereby improving or otherwise maintaining user experience.
