[0046] The communications in the communication environments shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0047] FIG. 1A shows a first topology 100 where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) directly and bidirectionally communicates with the device 120. The communication between the device 120 and the device 110 may include ambient IoT data and / or signalling. This first topology 100 may include the possibility that the device 120 transmitting to the device 110 is a different from the device 120 receiving from the device 110. For example, the first topology 100 may be deployed in a scenario where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the device 120 may be indoors.

[0048] FIG. 1B shows a second topology 100’ where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node (i.e., the device 130) between the device 110 and the device 120. In the second topology 100’ , the intermediate node may be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, and the like. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node may transfer Ambient IoT data and / or signalling between the device 110 and the device 120. For example, the second topology 100’ may be deployed in a scenario where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the device 120 may be outdoor.

[0049] In some embodiments, an air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for Ambient IoT may enable the following devices: (1) Device 1~1 μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device, the device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally; and (2) Device 2a and Device 2b ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumptionl, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to l0x ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The UL transmission of Device 2a may be backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. The UL transmission of Device 2b may be generated internally by the device. It is to be understood that “≤ a few hundred μW” means WGs are not tasked with setting a particular value, and that it will be for WG discussions to determine if a presented design with corresponding power consumption satisfies the “≤ a few hundred μW” requirement.

[0050] In some embodiments, there may be different types of ambient IoT devices, including: a first type of device (i.e., Device A) which has no energy storage and no independent signal generation / amplification, i.e. backscattering transmission, a second type of device (i.e., Device B) which has energy storage but no independent signal generation, i.e. backscattering transmission, and a third type of device (i.e., Device C)  which has energy storage and independent signal generation, i.e., active RF components for transmission. For the second type of device, use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals. The device 110 may be any of the first, second or third types of devices.

[0051] A limited energy storage can be different among implementations within Device B or implementations within Device C, and different between Device B and Device C. Such storage is expected to be order (s) of magnitude smaller than an NB-IoT device would typically include. For Device A, the power consumption target during transmitting / receiving is ≤ 1 μW or ≤ 10 μW. For Device B, the target during transmitting / receiving is such that: Device A power consumption << Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption; or Device A power consumption ≤ Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption. The device power consumption during transmitting / receiving for Device C is ≤ 1 mW to ≤ 10 mW. For Device A, the complexity target is to be comparable to UHF RFID ISO18000-6C (EPC C1G2) . For Device B, the target is such that: Device A complexity < Device B complexity < Device C complexity. For Device C, the complexity target is to be orders-of-magnitude lower than NB-IoT.

[0052] FIG. 2A illustrates a schematic diagram of signal generation. As shown in FIG. 2A, for Physical Reader to Device Channel (PRDCH) generation at the reader, at least following blocks may be studied. Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits are appended to the information bits if there is non-zero length CRC. The line coding block follows the CRC attachment block. In some solutions, a bit after line coding may include more than one chips. For example, for Manchester encoding: bit 0→chips {10} , bit 1→chips {01 } . On-off key (OOK) - / OOK-2 modulation with OFDM waveform generation including resource mapping may be applied to the signal after the line coding. For R2D, the only physical channel is PRDCH which carries any higher-layer payload and layer 1 (L1) R2D control information.

[0053] FIG. 2B illustrates another schematic diagram of signal generation. As shown in FIG. 2B, for PDRCH generation at the device, at least following blocks may be studied. CRC bits may be appended if there is non-zero length CRC. The coding block follows the CRC attachment block. Coding methods may be extracted within the coding block, e.g. with / without line coding and / or forward error correction (FEC) . If no line coding is  used, there may be an additional block (e.g. square wave generator) before / after modulation block. Then the modulation block may be applied. For D2R, PDRCH may carry any higher-layer payload and L1 D2R control information.

[0054] In some solutions, at least the following time domain frame structure is studied for A-IoT R2D and D2R transmission. Specifically, for R2D transmission, an R2D timing acquisition signal (e.g. R2D preamble) may be included at least for timing acquisition and for indicating the start of the R2D transmission in time domain. For D2R transmission, a D2R timing acquisition signal (e.g. D2R preamble) may be included at least for timing acquisition and for indicating the start of the D2R transmission in time domain. For D2R, a preamble preceding each PDRCH transmission is studied as the baseline at least for the D2R timing acquisition signal and the preamble is not part of PDRCH. In some solutions, it also assumes the following bit to chip mapping for Manchester encoding: bit 0→chips {10} , bit 1→chips {01} .

[0055] In some solutions, for the R2D timing acquisition signal immediately preceding the transmission of a physical channel, a preamble with at least two parts which includes a start-indicator part and a clock-acquisition part can be proposed, where the start-indicator part immediately precedes the clock-acquisition part: start-indicator part provides the start of the R2D transmission; and clock-acquisition part provides at least the chip synchronization of the subsequent physical channel transmission.

[0056] Reference is made to FIG. 3, which illustrates a signaling flow 300 of a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 300 involves the first device 310 and the second device 320. The first device 310 may be an ambient IoT device (such as, reader) and the second device 320 may be an ambient IoT tag. As used herein, the term “OFF pattern” may refer to low power or zero for a chip have the same meaning that the samples in one chip have low voltage transmission or a transmission with a voltage less than a voltage threshold. The term “ON pattern” may refer to high power or one for a chip have the same meaning that the samples in one chip have high voltage transmission or a transmission with a voltage higher than a voltage threshold.

[0057] The first device 310 transmits (3010) a time acquisition signal to the second device 320. The time acquisition signal includes a start indicator part and a signal clock acquisition part.

[0058] In some embodiments, the start indicator part may include a transmission with a voltage less than a voltage threshold. In some embodiments, a duration of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage may be equal to one or more symbols. For example, as shown in FIG. 4A, the start indicator part 410 of the time acquisition signal may be the low voltage transmission with the duration that equals to one OFDM symbol or more OFDM symbols. In some embodiments, the start indicator part may have a unified design for OOK-1 and OOK-4 waveform generation.

[0059] In some embodiments, there may be another transmission with a voltage higher than the voltage threshold (i.e., a high voltage transmission) before the start indicator part of the time acquisition signal for at least certain time. For example, as shown in FIG. 4A, the high voltage transmission 411 is before the start indicator part 410. In some embodiments, the time duration of the high voltage transmission may be one or more symbols (such as, one or more OFDM symbols) . In some other embodiments, the time duration of the other transmission may be longer than an integer multiple of longest transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold. In other words, the time duration for the high voltage transmission may be longer than the integer (including integer one) multiple of longest high voltage transmission of a chip for data transmission.

[0060] In some other embodiments, the start indicator part may further include another transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold ahead of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage. For example, as shown in FIG. 4B, the start indicator part 420 may include the high voltage transmission 422 and the low voltage transmission 421. In some embodiments, the duration of the other transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold may be equal to a first number of symbols and the duration of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage may be equal to a second number of symbols. For example, the duration of the high voltage transmission 422 may be one or more OFDM symbols and the duration of the low voltage transmission 421 may be one or more OFDM symbols. Alternatively, the first number is an integer multiple of the second number or an integer multiple of longest transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold. In this way, the device can reset the reception when the received duration of high voltage transmission is longer than the duration of the high voltage transmission.

[0061] In some embodiments, the signal clock acquisition part may include predefined bits for line coding. In some embodiments, the predefined bits may include bits 00 which  may be chips {1010} after Manchester line coding. For example, as shown in FIG. 5A, the signal clock acquisition part 510 may include bits {0 0} which is {1010} after the Manchester line coding. In some other embodiments, the signal clock acquisition part may include bits 01 which may be chips {1001} after Manchester line coding. For example, as shown in FIG. 5B, the signal clock acquisition part 520 may include bits {01 } which is {1001 } after the Manchester line coding. It is noted that the start indicator part shown in FIG. 4A or FIG. 4B can be combined with the signal clock acquisition part shown in FIG. 5A or FIG. 5B in any suitable manner.

[0062] In some embodiments, another transmission with a voltage higher than the voltage threshold may be transmitted / generated after the start-indicator part. For example, the high voltage transmission may be transmitted / generated immediately after the low voltage start indicator part of which the duration is fixed, i.e. regardless of the adaptive of chip duration. In this way, it has benefit on the detection of start indicator part.

[0063] In some embodiments, the signal clock acquisition part may include at least two bits that can allow single edge, e.g. only raising edge, detection. In some other embodiments, there may also be one bit for the signal clock acquisition, in such way, bit 0 → chips {10} is used. In some embodiments, the chip duration of bit 0 and / or bit 1 in the signal clock acquisition part may be the same as chip duration of bit 0 and / or bit 1 in PRDCH.

[0064] In some other embodiments, the predefined bits may include bits 01 for PIE line coding. In this case, in some embodiments, the chip duration of bit 0 and / or bit 1 in the signal clock acquisition part may be the same as chip duration of bit 0 and / or bit 1 in PRDCH.

[0065] In some embodiments, the start indicator part may include a first bit sequence. Alternatively, or in addition, the signal clock acquisition part may include a second bit sequence for line coding. For example, the start indicator part of the time acquisition signal and / or the signal clock acquisition part of the time acquisition signal may be bits sequence or chips sequence for Manchester line coding. In this way, since for device type 2 with self-stored energy, the received power may not be high enough that simple start indicator may cause miss / wrong detection of the start of transmission, the sequence-based start indicator can be more accurate for starting detection. Similarly, the clock acquisition from a sequence can be used to against the noise and interference. In some embodiments,  at least one of the first bit sequence or the second bit sequence may be m sequence. In this way, it is easier for the device to detect the presence of the sequence. It is noted that the first bit sequence or the second bit sequence can be any suitable type of sequence (such as, M sequence, Gold sequence) .

[0066] In some embodiments, for the data part, some kinds of repetition may be applied. For example, the parameter (such as, the number of repetition) may be indicated by the preamble of R2D signal.

[0067] In some embodiments, a duration of the start indicator part may be fixed. In other words, the chip duration of the start-indicator part is fixed, i.e., regardless of chip duration of the data. In this case, in some embodiments, a duration of the signal clock acquisition part may be the same as a duration of data. For example, the chip duration of the signal clock acquisition part is the same as the chip duration of the data.

[0068] In some other embodiments, a duration of the start indicator part may be fixed in a first type of transmission. For example, the chip duration of the start-indicator part is fixed, i.e., regardless of chip duration of the data. The first type of transmission may be an activation command or inventory command. In some embodiments, the duration of the start indicator part is the same as that of data in a second type of transmission. For example, the second type of transmission may be other commands.

[0069] In some embodiments, a default state may last for a period of time after a transmission from the first device 310 to the second device 320. For example, the default state may be a high voltage transmission. For example, as shown in FIG. 6A and FIG. 6B, the default state 610 may last for a certain time duration. In this way, the device may use the high voltage power for energy harvesting for signal processing.

[0070] In some embodiments, a format of the postamble may be a low voltage sequence for one or integer multiple of bit duration for Manchester line coding, e.g., the R2D postamble is “00” chips for one bit duration. In some embodiments, if the repetition is applied, the duration for the postamble may be also repeated the same as the data part. Since there are high voltage transmission for a certain time, postamble of chips {00} may have benefit to reduce miss detection probability of the last bit of the R2D transmission. For example, ifthe postamble is chips {00} and miss detected as a bit, since receiver can detect the default state after that and there must be chips {00} before the default state, the receiver can realize the last detected bit is wrong and discard it.

[0071] Reference is made to FIG. 7, which illustrates a signaling flow 700 of a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 700 involves the first device 710 and the second device 720. The first device 710 may be an ambient IoT device (such as, reader) and the second device 720 may be an ambient IoT tag. As used herein, the term “OFF pattern” may refer to low power or zero for a chip have the same meaning that the device is under absorb state of backscatter. The term “ON pattern” may refer to high power or one for a chip have the same meaning that the device is under reflect state of backscatter. The reflect output backscatter signal may be in the same phase or in the opposite phase of the input signal depends on the device’s capability. For single side backscatter signal, chip 0 may be device using absorb state of backscatter and chip 1 may be device using reflect state ofbackscatter. For double side backscatter signal, chip 0 may be device using reflect state of backscatter with opposite phase and chip 1 may be device using reflect state ofbackscatter with same phase, or vice versa. For example, chip 1 may be device using reflect state of backscatter with opposite phase and chip 0 may be device using reflect state of backscatter with same phase. The term “X-amble” may refer to one or more of R2D preamble, R2D postamble, D2R preamble, D2R midamble or D2R postamble.

[0072] The second device 720 activates (7010) a state which may be an absorb state of backscatter or a transmitting state for a predefined time duration. In some embodiments, the state may be activated after transmitting (7005) a signal to the first device 710. Alternatively, or in addition, the state may be activated before transmitting the signal to the first device 710. For example, before and / after the transmission, the second device 720 may be under absorb state of backscatter for at least certain time. Alternatively, the second device 720 may be under transmitting chip 0 state for a certain time. In this way, the reader can adjust its interference cancelation receiver during this state with such assumption.

[0073] In some embodiments, a chip duration of the transmission may be a basic chip duration divided by a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) factor. In some embodiments, the basic chip duration may be indicated by control information and determined based on the chip duration multiplying by a scaling factor. In some embodiments, the FDM factor may be used for frequency domain multiplexing of multiple devices. For example, each FDM factor corresponds to one FDM resource. In some  embodiments, the FDM factor can be indicated to the second device 720. Alternatively, the second device 720 may select one FDM factor from a plurality of factors by itself. In some embodiments, for each bit in X-preamble of the transmission, a bit level repetition with the number of the FDM factor may be applied. For example, as shown in FIG. 8A, if the FDM factor is 1, for bit 0, the transmitted signal is bit {0} which is in chips {1 0} . As shown in FIG. 8B, if FDM factor is 4, for bit 0, the transmitted signal is bit {0} -> (4 bit level repetition) bits {0000} -> chips {10101010} with each chip duration 1 / 4 of the basic duration.

[0074] In some other embodiments, a chip duration of the transmission may be a basic chip duration divided by a largest FDM factor. For example, the basic chip duration may be indicated by the control information and determined based on the chip duration multiplying by a scaling factor. In some embodiments, for each bit in X-preamble of the transmission, a chip level repetition with the number of the largest FDM factor and bit level repetitio with selected FDM factor are applied. For example, as shown in FIG. 9A, when the largest FDM factor is 4, for the selected FDM factor 1 and bit 0, the transmitted signal is bit {0} -> (1 bit level repetition) bits {0} -> chips {10} -> (4 chip level repetition) chips {11110000} . As another example, as shown in FIG. 9B, when the largest FDM factor is 4, for the selected FDM factor 4 and bit 0, the transmitted signal is bit {0} -> (4 bit level repetition) bits {0000} -> chips {10101010} -> (1 chip level repetition) chips {10101010} .

[0075] In some further embodiments, a clock chip duration of the transmission may be a basic bit duration divided by (2*selected FDM factor) . For example, the basic bit duration may be indicated by the control information and determined based on the chip duration multiplying by a scaling factor. In some embodiments, for each bit in X-amble of the transmission, the bit may map to data bit with basic bit duration.

[0076] In some embodiments, there is a clock chip (for example, 1010. . . ) with clock chip duration. For example, the transmitted chip may be XOR of data bits and clock chips. For example, as shown in FIG. 10A, when the largest FDM factor is 4, for the selected FDM factor 1 and bit 0, the data bit is 0 for duration X. The clock chips may be {10} with duration X / 2 of each chip. The transmitted chip may be {10} . As another example, as shown in FIG. 10B, when THE largest FDM factor is 4, for the selected FDM factor 4 and bit 0, the data bit is 0 for duration X. The clock chips may be {10101010} with duration X / 8 of each chip. The transmitted chip may be {10101010} .

[0077] In some embodiments, a bit sequence of preamble and postamble of the transmission is binary inversed. For example, ifthe preamble bit sequence is {11001 } , the postamble bit sequence is then {00110} . In this way, since there is only one bit sequence is needed at the device side, it can reduce the implementation complexity of the device while can distinguish the preamble and postamble by the reader.

[0078] In some embodiments, a preamble or postamble of the transmission may include line coding violation chips. For example, for Manchester line coding, it could be chips {00} or chips {11 } in X-ambles. In such way, the data part after line coding could not be the same as the X-ambles from chips level perspective that there could be no ambiguous issue. In some embodiments, the line coding violation chips may be at a start or end of the X-amble.

[0079] In some embodiments, a presence of midamble and / or postamble in the transmission may be indicated control information. In some embodiments, an indication regarding the presence of midamble and / or postamble may be in a control field. Since the need of midamble and / or postamble is capability of the reader, it is reader (i.e., the first device 710) to indicate such control information.

[0080] In some embodiments, the control information of presence of midamble and / or postamble is bit / chip size pair related information. In some embodiments, if the transmitted bits / chips from the second device 720 is X bits since the last preamble or midamble, and the remaining bits / chips is larger than Y, a midamble may be added here. In some other embodiments, if the transmitted bits / chips from the second device 720 is X bits since the last preamble or midamble, and the remaining bits / chips is less than Y, a midamble may not be added here and a postamble may be added after the PDRCH.

[0081] FIG. 11 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1100 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 1100 may be implemented at a reader (for example, the device 130 in FIG. 1B or the device 110 in FIG. 1A when the device 110 acts as a reader) .

[0086] In some example embodiments, the start indicator part further comprises another transmission with a voltage higher than the voltage threshold ahead of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage.

[0087] In some example embodiments, a duration of the other transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold is equal to a first number of symbols, a duration of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage is equal to a second number of symbols.

[0088] In some example embodiments, the first number is an integer multiple of the second number or an integer multiple of longest transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold.

[0089] In some example embodiments, the predefined bits comprise {0, 0} or {0, 1 } for Manchester line coding.

[0090] In some example embodiments, another transmission with a voltage higher than the voltage threshold is transmitted / generated after the start-indicator part.

[0092] In some example embodiments, a duration for bit 0 and / or bit 1 in the signal clock acquisition part is same as a duration for bit 0 and / or bit 1 in PRDCH.

[0093] In some example embodiments, a duration of the start indicator part is fixed, and a duration of the signal clock acquisition part is the same as a duration of data.

[0095] In some example embodiments, a default state lasts for a period of time after a transmission from the first device to the second device.

[0096] FIG. 12 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1200 implemented at a second device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 1200 may be implemented at a device (for example, the device 110 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B when the device 110 acts as a tag) .

[0097] At block 1210, the second device activates an absorb state of backscatter or a transmitting state for a predefined time duration, before and / or after a transmission from the second device to a first device.

[0098] In some example embodiments, a chip duration of the transmission is a basic chip duration divided by a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) factor.

[0101] In some example embodiments, for each bit in preamble or postamble of the transmission, a chip level repetition with the number of the largest FDM factor and bit level repetitio with selected FDM factor are applied.

[0102] In some example embodiments, a clock chip duration of the transmission is a basic bit duration divided by (2*selected FDM factor) .

[0103] In some example embodiments, for each bit in preamble or postamble of the transmission, the bit maps to data bit with basic bit duration.

[0104] In some example embodiments, there is a clock chip with clock chip duration.

[0105] In some example embodiments, transmitted chip is XOR of data bits and clock chips.

[0106] In some example embodiments, a bit sequence of preamble and postamble of the transmission is binary inversed.

[0107] In some example embodiments, a preamble or postamble of the transmission comprises line coding violation chips.

[0108] In some example embodiments, the line coding violation chips are at a start or end of the preamble or postamble.

[0109] In some example embodiments, a presence of midamble and / or postamble in the transmission is indicated control information.

[0110] In some example embodiments, an indication regarding the presence of midamble and / or postamble is in a control field.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the control information of presence ofmidamble and / or postamble is bit / chip size pair related information.

[0112] FIG. 13 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1300 implemented at a second device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 1300 may be implemented at a device (for example, the device 110 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B when the device 110 acts as a tag) .

[0113] At block 1310, the second device receives a time acquisition signal from a first device. The time acquisition signal comprises a start indicator part and a signal clock acquisition part. The start indicator part comprises a transmission with a voltage less than a voltage threshold or a first bit sequence. Alternatively, or in addition, the signal clock acquisition part comprises predefined bits for line coding or a second bit sequence for line coding.

[0114] In some example embodiments, a duration of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage is equal to one or more symbols.

[0116] In some example embodiments, a duration of the other transmission is one or more symbols, or wherein the duration of the other transmission is longer than an integer multiple of longest transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold.

[0117] In some example embodiments, the start indicator part further comprises another transmission with a voltage higher than the voltage threshold ahead of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage.

[0118] In some example embodiments, a duration of the other transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold is equal to a first number of symbols, a duration of the transmission with the voltage less than the threshold voltage is equal to a second number of symbols.

[0119] In some example embodiments, the first number is an integer multiple of the second number or an integer multiple of longest transmission with the voltage higher than the voltage threshold.

[0123] In some example embodiments, a duration for bit 0 and / or bit 1 in the signal clock acquisition part is same as a duration for bit 0 and / or bit 1 in PRDCH.

[0124] In some example embodiments, a duration of the start indicator part is fixed, and a duration of the signal clock acquisition part is the same as a duration of data.

[0125] In some example embodiments, a duration of the start indicator part is fixed in a first type of transmission, and the duration of the start indicator part is the same as that of data in a second type of transmission.

[0126] In some example embodiments, a default state lasts for a period of time after a transmission from the first device to the second device.
