Description

MOVING SHUTTER MECHANISM[TECHNICAL FIELD]

[0001] The present invention relates to a moving shutter mechanism. Especially, the present invention relates to a moving shutter mechanism to be used in a camera module or a camera unit of various products, in particular, various mobile electronic devices including smartphones, mobile phones, etc. The present invention also relates to a product including such a moving shutter mechanism.[BACKGROUND ART]

[0002] In a camera module, especially, a multiple lens architecture such as “2-in-1” camera, some kind of shading means (i.e., a shutter) for a lens which is not used when switching the lens, is needed. However, in a conventional structure, a complex mechanical driving means or a complex electrical driving means is required to drive the shutter, which results in high cost, poor ease in assembly, and unwanted increase in size of the camera module.

[0003] Conventional techniques considered to be somewhat related to the present invention are disclosed or described, for example, in US 8,662,762 B2 and US 7,889,435 B2.

[0004] US 8,662,762 B2 describes a dual optical lens system. As shown in Fig. 17, this dual optical lens system is configured such that by moving a movable reflection mirror 461, the optical system can be switched between Position-1 and Position-2. In Position-1, a shutter T evacuates from the position above a lens 411. On the other hand, in Position-2, the shutter T covers the lens 411 for Position-1.

[0005] US 7,889,435 B2 also describes a dual optical lens system. As shown in Fig. 18, this dual optical lens system is configured such that by moving a second prism 22, the optical system can be switched between Position-1 and Position-2. In Position-1, a shutter 23 covers a lens 21 for Position-2. On the other hand, in Position-2, the shutter 23 evacuates from the position above the lens 21.

[0006] In the dual optical lens system described in US 8,662,762 B2, when switching the optical system, the movable reflection mirror 461 is moved and at the same time, the shutter T also needs to be moved. However, the shutter T is not linked to the movement of the movable reflection mirror 461. This means that a dedicated mechanical or electrical driving means to move the shutter T is required.

[0007] In the dual optical lens system described in US 7,889,435 B2, when switching the optical system, the second prism 22 is moved and at the same time, the shutter 23 also needs to be moved. However, also in this system, the shutter 23 is not linked to the movement of the second prism 22, as well as the dual optical lens system described in US 8,662,762 B2. Therefore, a dedicated driving means to move the shutter 23 is required.

[0008] As mentioned above, in the prior art systems, the dedicated mechanical or electrical driving means are required in order to move the shutter. This leads to unwanted increase in the size of the camera module, high manufacturing costs, and reduced ease of assembly.

[0009] For these reasons, there is a demand for a moving shutter mechanism to allow the camera module to be made smaller. Also, there is a demand for a moving shutter mechanism that can reduce manufacturing costs of the camera module. Furthermore, there is a demand for a moving shutter mechanism that can simplify the assembly of the camera module.[DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION]

[0010] In view of the above, an object of the present invention is to provide a novel moving shutter mechanism which can overcome or at least alleviate the problems as stated above in relation to the prior art devices. In particular, a more specific object of the present invention is to provide a novel moving shutter mechanism: (i) that allows the camera module to be made smaller; (ii) that can reduce manufacturing costs of the camera module; (iii) that can simplify the assembly of the camera module; and (iv) that can realize high reliability of the camera module.

[0011] In general, in order to achieve this object, the present invention proposes to use a magnetic force as a driving source of a shading means for the lens, i.e., a shutter plate.

[0012] In the present invention, the shutter is driven with a magnetic repulsion force. The shutter is linked to the movement of an optical element, i.e., a prism, whose purpose is to switch the optical system. Therefore, according to the present invention, the dedicated mechanical or electrical driving means is not required to move the shutter. As a result, the structure of the moving shutter mechanism can be simpler and thus the moving shutter mechanism can be smaller. Furthermore, this contributes not only to the miniaturization of the camera module but also low manufacturing costs of the camera module and simplification of the assembly of the camera module (i.e., an improvement in assembling possibility) . In addition to this, this novel moving shutter mechanism achieves high reliability due to its simple structure.

[0013] Typical lens architecture in which the unique construction regarding the present invention can be applied, is generally called “2-in-1” architecture (of course, not limited to this architecture) . In this architecture, a prism is moved in the right and left directions to optically switch a first lens and a second lens. All lenses between the prism and an image sensor as well as the image sensor are commonly used for both the first lens and the second lens. In this kind of architecture, the lens, which is not being used, needs to be covered with a shutter in order to avoid an unfavorable phenomena such as a ghost or a flare phenomenon. Therefore, the shutter needs to be moved or driven in response to the movement of an optical element (i.e., the prism) .

[0014] The technical idea of the present invention is to move or drive the shutter with a simple means linking to the movement of the optical element (i.e., the prism) that switches the optical system. The moving shutter mechanism created based on this technical idea can be used in a camera module for various camera products including smartphones. According to the present invention, it will be possible to provide a novel moving shutter mechanism (i) that allows the camera module to be made smaller; (ii) that can reduce manufacturing costs of the camera module; (iii) that can simplify the assembly of the camera module; and (iv) that can realize high reliability of the camera module.

[0015] In order to achieve above-mentioned objects, the present invention provides a moving shutter mechanism for a camera module, wherein the camera module includes: a plurality of lenses arranged in a row; an image sensor; and a prism that directs a light incident from one of the plurality of lenses to the image sensor, wherein the prism is arranged so as to be linearly movable to be located behind any one of the plurality of lenses, the moving shutter mechanism comprises: at least one shutter plate arranged movably along a linear travel path defined between the plurality of lenses and the prism and overlapping any one of the plurality of lenses; at least one first magnetic element mounted on the at least one shutter plate; and at least one second magnetic element associated with the prism, wherein the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element are configured to create a magnetic repulsion force, and wherein the moving shutter mechanism is configured such that when in operation, due to the magnetic repulsion force, the shutter plate is moved in a direction opposite to the moving direction of the prism so that the shutter plate is not in front of the prism.

[0016] The present invention also provides a product including a camera module, wherein the camera module comprises a moving shutter mechanism as stated above.

[0017] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the moving shutter mechanism may further comprise: a pair of shutter plate guide shafts arranged parallel to each other to guide the linear movement of the at least one shutter plate; a pair of shutter plate holders for holding the at least one shutter plate, wherein each of the shutter plate holders is arranged so as to slide relative to the shutter plate guide shafts, and wherein each of the shutter plate holders is connected to respective side edge of the at least one shutter plate; a pair of prism guide shafts arranged parallel to each other to guide the linear movement of the prism, wherein the parallel width of the pair of shutter plate guide shafts and the parallel width of the pair of prism guide shafts are substantially equal; and a pair of prism holders for holding the prism, wherein each of the prism holder is arranged so as to slide relative to the prism guide shafts, and wherein each of the prism holders is connected to respective side edge (or side surface) of the prism. In this preferred aspect of the present invention, the pair of shutter plate holders for holding the shutter plate may be integrated with the shutter plate. Similarly, in this  preferred aspect of the present invention, the pair of prism holders for holding the prism may be integrated with each other, i.e. they may be implemented as a single component. Furthermore, in this preferred aspect of the present invention, each of the shutter plate guide shafts may pass through respective shutter plate holder. Similarly, in this preferred aspect of the present invention, each of the prism guide shafts may pass through a respective prism holder. Alternatively, in this preferred aspect of the present invention, each of the shutter plate guide shafts may be at least partially accommodated in a groove formed in the respective shutter plate holder. Similarly, in this preferred aspect of the present invention, each of the prism guide shafts may be at least partially accommodated in a groove formed in the respective prism holder.

[0018] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the first magnetic element may be disposed on the side of the shutter plate holder that can face the prism holder, and the second magnetic element may be disposed on the side of the prism holder that can face the shutter plate holder. As described later, when the first and second magnetic elements are a permanent magnet, the first and second magnetic elements may be formed by partially magnetizing the shutter plate holder and the prism holder.

[0019] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element may be disposed only on one guide shaft side. That is, in this case, the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element are disposed in association with only left or right guide shaft with the image sensor behind. Such an aspect is preferable in view of manufacturing cost.

[0020] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element may be disposed on both guide shafts paired with each other. That is, in this case, the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element are disposed in association with both left and right guide shafts with the image sensor behind. Such an aspect is preferable when a relatively large force is required to move or drive the shutter plate.

[0021] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the moving shutter mechanism may further comprise at least one spring to assist the shutter plate to start moving. This aspect is particularly useful for miniaturizing the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element. If required, it would be possible to incorporate further magnetic elements, instead of or in addition to the springs.

[0022] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the at least one spring may be a coil spring, and the at least one spring may be placed around the shutter plate guide shaft. This aspect is particularly useful for saving space in the shutter moving mechanism, simplifying assembly working, and reducing manufacturing costs.

[0023] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the moving shutter mechanism may comprise two coil springs on one guide shaft and these two springs may be placed with the shutter plate holder in between. According to this aspect, a more reliable operation of the shutter plate can be achieved.

[0024] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the shutter plate guide shafts may be equipped with a pair of stoppers to regulate the range of movement of the shutter plate. In this aspect, the stoppers may be integrally formed at both ends of the shutter plate guide shaft, or may be a separate member attached to both ends of the shutter plate guide shaft.

[0025] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the camera module may include two lenses arranged in a row and the moving shutter mechanism may comprise only one shutter plate. Furthermore, according to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the camera module may include three lenses arranged in a row and the moving shutter mechanism may comprise two shutter plates arranged in a row. In particular, in case that the camera module includes three lenses and the moving shutter mechanism comprises two shutter plates, the two shutter plates are slidably supported or guided using the pair of parallel guide shafts in a similar manner as the aspect in which the camera module includes two lenses and the moving shutter mechanism comprises only one shutter plate.

[0026] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, in case that two shutter plates comprise a first shutter plate and a second shutter plate, the first magnetic element associated with the first shutter plate may be  disposed only on one side edge of the first shutter plate, and the first magnetic element associated with the second shutter plate may be disposed only on other side edge of the second shutter plates opposite one side edge of the first shutter plate. This aspect effectively prevents unnecessary magnetic force (repulsion or attraction) from being generated between the two shutter plates when the two shutter plates are directly adjacent to each other, and as a result, the more reliable operation of the shutter plates is realized.

[0027] According to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element may be permanent magnet. Furthermore, in this case, the first magnetic element and the second magnetic element may be disposed such that the N pole of the first magnetic element and the N pole of the second magnetic element can face each other, or the S pole of the first magnetic element and the S pole of the second magnetic element can face each other.

[0028] The present invention also provides a product including a camera module, wherein the camera module comprises a moving shutter mechanism as stated above.

[0029] With regard to the product including a camera module, according to one preferred aspect of the present invention, the product may be a device, an apparatus, a piece of equipment, a machine, a facility, a tool, or the like, which includes the camera module. In particular, the product may be a mobile electronic device such as a smartphone including the camera module.[BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS]

[0050] As used herein, terms related to direction such as “front” , “rear” , “forward” , “behind” , “up” , “down” , “upper” , “lower” , “upward” , “downward” , “right” , “left” , etc. are to be understood in relation to the orientation of the system in the figures, which may or may not match the actual orientation in use.

[0051] The following exemplary embodiments of the present invention relate to a moving shutter mechanism to be used in a camera module, but not limited thereto, of the products like a mobile electronic device, in particular, a smartphone. Furthermore, the following exemplary embodiments of the present invention also relate to such products, in particular, a mobile electronic device, including a camera module which comprises the moving shutter mechanism being one exemplary embodiment of the present invention. However, such a product can be any device, any apparatus, any piece of equipment, any machine, any facility, any tool, or the like, which includes a camera module.

[0052] Fig. 1 shows a mobile electronic device (product) 1, that is, a smartphone according to one preferred embodiment of the present invention. The mobile electronic device 1 includes a camera module 1a which is built into it. The camera module 1a comprises a moving shutter mechanism 10 for this camera module 1a, as detailed below. The moving shutter mechanism 10 is placed behind optical lenses of the camera module 1a (here, “behind” means downstream in the direction of light travel) . In this embodiment, the camera module 1a includes two lenses 20a, 20b and the moving shutter mechanism 10 comprises one shutter plate as detailed below. Therefore, in this embodiment, the moving shutter mechanism 10 is placed behind first and second optical lens 20a, 20b of the camera module 1a. In another embodiment described below, three or more lenses may be used, and the number of lenses is not limited to two.

[0053] Figs. 2 and 3 show the basic architecture (so called “2-in-1” lens architecture) of a camera module (optical system) in which the moving shutter mechanism 10 of one preferred embodiment of the present invention is incorporated. As can be seen from Figs. 2 and 3, the camera module 1a includes a plurality of lenses 20a, 20b arranged in a row, as stated above. In this embodiment, the lens 20a may be a lens group composed of a plurality of superimposed lenses, or may be a single lens. The same applies to the lens 20b.

[0054] The camera module 1a also includes: (i) an image sensor 30 electrically connected to an image processing circuit (not shown) of the mobile electronic device 1; and (ii) a prism 40 that directs a light incident from one of the lenses 20a, 20b to the image sensor 30. The prism 40 is arranged so as to be linearly movable to be located behind any one of the lenses 20a, 20b. That is, the prism 40 is mechanically connected to an actuator (not shown) , and by activating this actuator, the prism 40 can be linearly moved so that the prism 40 can approach or move away from the image sensor 30. In this embodiment, a lens group 50 is arranged between the image sensor 30 and the prism 40. Since the structure of  such an optical system itself can be used as one known to those skilled in the art, explanation thereof will be omitted.

[0055] In Fig. 2, light incident on the first lens 20a is reflected by the prism 40 and input to the image sensor 30, and in Fig. 3, light incident on the second lens 20b is reflected by the prism 40 and input to the image sensor 30.

[0056] As can be also seen from Figs. 2 and 3, the moving shutter mechanism 10 comprises a single shutter plate 100a. The shutter plate 100a is arranged movably along a linear travel path S defined between the lenses 20a, 20b and the prism 40. In addition, the shutter plate 100a is arranged so as to overlap any one of the lenses 20a, 20b. That is, in Fig. 2, the shutter plate 100a overlaps the lens 20b and prevents the light incident on the lens 20b from reaching the lens group 50. On the other hand, in Fig. 3, the shutter plate 100a overlaps the lens 20a and prevents the light incident on the lens 20a from reaching the lens group 50.

[0057] Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the moving shutter mechanism 10, and Fig. 5 shows a side view of the moving shutter mechanism 10. Hereinafter, the moving shutter mechanism 10 will be explained in more detail using Figs. 4 and 5.

[0058] As can be seen from Figs. 4 and 5, the moving shutter mechanism 10 further comprises: (i) two first magnetic elements 200a mounted or fixed on the shutter plate 100a; and (ii) two second magnetic elements 300 mounted or fixed on prism holders 700a, 700b described below. In this embodiment, the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 are, for example, a plate-shaped permanent magnet. The first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 are configured to create a magnetic repulsion force. That is, in this embodiment, the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 are disposed such that the N pole of the first magnetic element 200a and the N pole of the second magnetic element 300 can face each other. However, in another preferred embodiment, the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed such that the S pole of the first magnetic element 200a and the S pole of the second magnetic element 300 face each other.

[0059] As detailed below, the moving shutter mechanism 10 is configured such that when in operation, due to the magnetic repulsion force created between the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300, the shutter plate 100a is moved in a direction opposite to the moving direction of the prism 40 so that the shutter plate 100a is not in front of the prism 40. That is, for example, when the prism 40 located behind the lens 20a is moved behind the lens 20b by the actuator (not shown) , the shutter plate 100a is “kicked” to the rear position of the lens 20a by a magnetic repulsion force.

[0060] Turning to Fig. 4, the moving shutter mechanism 10 further comprises: (i) a pair of shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b; (ii) a pair of shutter plate holders 500a, 500b; (iii) a pair of prism guide shafts 600a, 600b; and (iv) a pair of prism holders 700a, 700b. The pair of shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b is arranged parallel to each other to guide the linear movement of the shutter plate 100a. As the shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b, for example, bars with a circular or rectangular cross section can be used. Although not shown, the shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b are firmly fixed to a base structure of the mobile electronic device (product) 1. In this embodiment, the prism holders 700a, 700b are separate to each other, but the prism holder 700a, 700b may be connected to each other by a frame etc.

[0061] The shutter plate holders 500a, 500b serve to hold the shutter plate 100a. Each of the shutter plate holders 500a, 500b is arranged so as to smoothly slide relative to the shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b. In this embodiment, the shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b extend passing through the shutter plate holders 500a, 500b. Each of the shutter plate holders 500a, 500b is connected to respective side edge of the shutter plate 100a. Therefore, the shutter plate 100a can slide relative to the shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b, and thus the lenses 20a, 20b.

[0062] The pair of prism guide shafts 600a, 600b is arranged parallel to each other to guide the linear movement of the prism 40. Also, as the prism guide shafts 600a, 600b, for example, bars with a circular or rectangular cross section can be used. Although not shown, the prism guide shafts 600a, 600b are firmly fixed to the base structure of the mobile electronic device (product) 1. As can be seen from Fig. 4, the parallel width D1 of the pair of shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b and the parallel width D2 of the pair of prism guide shafts 600a, 600b are substantially equal.

[0063] The prism holders 700a, 700b serve to hold the prism 40. Each of the prism holder 700a, 700b is arranged so as to smoothly slide relative to the prism guide shafts 600a, 600b. In this embodiment, the prism guide shafts 600a, 600b are partially accommodated in a groove (no reference number added) that is formed in respective prism holder 700a, 700b and opens downward. Each of the prism holders 700a, 700b is connected to respective side edge of the prism 40. Therefore, the prism 40 can slide relative to the prism guide shafts 600a, 600b, and thus the lenses 20a, 20b.

[0064] In this embodiment, the first magnetic elements 200a are disposed on the side of the shutter plate holder 500a, 500b that can face the prism holder 700a, 700b. More specifically, the moving shutter mechanism 10 includes two first magnetic elements 200a. One of these first magnetic elements 200a, in particular, the left side first magnetic elements 200a with the image sensor 30 behind, is disposed on the side of the shutter plate holder 500b that can face the prism holder 700b. On the other hand, the right side first magnetic elements 200a with the image sensor 30 behind, is disposed on the side of the shutter plate holder 500a that can face the prism holder 700a.

[0065] In this embodiment, the second magnetic elements 300 are disposed on the side of the prism holder 700a, 700b that can face the shutter plate holder 500a, 500b. More specifically, the moving shutter mechanism 10 includes two second magnetic elements 300. One of these second magnetic elements 300, in particular, the left side second magnetic elements 300 with the image sensor 30 behind, is disposed on the side of the prism holder 700b that can face the shutter plate holder 500b. On the other hand, the right side second magnetic elements 300 with the image sensor 30 behind, is disposed on the side of the prism holder 700a that can face the shutter plate holder 500a.

[0066] As stated above, in this embodiment, one of the first magnetic elements 200a is magnetically associated with one of the second magnetic elements 300, and the other of the first magnetic elements 200a is magnetically associated with the other of the second magnetic elements 300. As can be seen from Fig. 5, in this embodiment, the first magnetic elements 200a and the second magnetic elements 300 are dimensioned so that even when they are maximally separated, their ends slightly overlap.

[0067] Also, as noted above, in this embodiment, the first magnetic elements 200a and the second magnetic elements 300 are disposed on both of the guide shaft 400a, 400b. However, in another embodiment, as shown in Fig. 6 showing a modification of the moving shutter mechanism in Fig. 4, the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed only on one guide shaft side. That is, the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed only on left side guide shaft 400b, 600b (this is the embodiment shown in Fig. 6) , or the first magnetic element 200a and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed only on right side guide shaft 400a, 600a. This structure will be adopted when so much magnetic driving force is not required to move the shutter plate 100a.

[0068] Turning to Fig. 5, in this embodiment, the shutter plate guide shafts 400a, 400b are equipped with a pair of stoppers 410a, 410b. These stoppers 410a, 410b serve to regulate the range of movement of the shutter plate 100a. One of the stoppers 410a, 410b may be integrally formed on the shaft 400a, 400b and the other may be fixed to the shaft 400a, 400b as a separate member. Alternatively, both of the stoppers 410a, 410b may be fixed to the shaft 400a, 400b as separate members.

[0069] In the following, the workings of the moving shutter mechanism 10 will be described with reference to Fig. 7. The part (a) in Fig. 7 shows a first position in which the shutter plate 100a is positioned below (behind) the second lens 20b and the prism 40 is positioned below (behind) the first lens 20a. In this position, a magnetic repulsive force F is acting between the first magnetic elements 200a and the second magnetic elements 300, and as a result, the shutter plate 100a is pressed against the stopper 410a and is held in position in contact with the stopper 410a. On the other hand, the pair of the prism holders 700a, 700b, and thus the prism 40 is positioned using the actuator such as VCM (not illustrated) .

[0070] When switching from this first position to second position (Fig. 7 (c) ) in which the shutter plate 100a is positioned below (behind) the first lens 20a and the prism 40 is positioned below (behind) the second lens 20b, the prism 40 will be driven to the left side using the actuator. During this process, the moving shutter mechanism 10 temporarily enters the state shown in the part (b) in Fig. 7. In this state, the shutter plate 100a receives magnetic repulsive force in the  right direction since the center position of the magnet elements 200a is slightly shifted to the right than the center position of the magnet elements 300. Due to this magnetic repulsive force, the shutter plate 100a starts to move to the right direction. Finally, as shown in the part (c) in Fig. 7, the shutter plate 100a moves until the shutter plate holders 500a, 500b contact the stopper 410b on the right side, and the shutter plate holders 500a, 500b and thus the shutter plate 100a are pressed against the stopper 410b by a magnetic repulsive force and is held in position in contact with the stopper 410b. When switching from the second position (the part (c) in Fig. 7) to the first position (the part (a) in Fig. 7) , the opposite action takes place. In this way, the shutter plate 100a is moved automatically in response to the position of the prism 40.

[0071] In the following, another preferred embodiment (second embodiment) of the present invention will be described with reference to Figs. 8 to 12. For efficiency of explanation, the same reference numerals are given to the same components as in the first embodiment, and the explanation thereof will be omitted. Furthermore, below, differences over the first embodiment will be mainly described.

[0072] In this second embodiment, the camera module (optical system) 1a includes three (first to third) lenses 20a, 20b, 20c arranged in a row and the moving shutter mechanism 10 comprises two shutter plates 100a, 100b, i.e., a first shutter plates 100a and a second shutter plates 100b, arranged in a row. In general, in this embodiment, one prism 40 is driven in order to switch between the fist lens 20a, the second lens 20b, and the third lens 20c. When the first lens 20a is used, the second lens 20b and the third lens 20c need to be covered with the respective shutter plates. When the second lens 20b is used, the first lens 20a and the third lens 20c need to be covered with the respective shutter plates. Furthermore, when the third lens 20c is used, the first 20a and the second lens 20b need to be covered with the respective shutter plates. The main difference over the above described “2-in-1” architecture is that two shutter plates need to be driven separately since two lenses need to be covered with the different shutter plate at the same time.

[0073] Fig. 8 shows the basic architecture (so called “3-in-1” lens architecture) of a camera module1a in which the moving shutter mechanism 10 is incorporated, wherein light incident on the first lens 20a is reflected by the prism 40 and input to the image sensor 30. Fig. 9 shows the basic architecture of the camera module 1a in which the moving shutter mechanism 10 is incorporated, wherein light incident on the second lens 20b is reflected by the prism 40 and input to the image sensor 30. Fig. 10 shows the basic architecture of the camera module 1a in which the moving shutter mechanism 10 is incorporated, wherein light incident on the third lens 20c is reflected by the prism 40 and input to the image sensor 30.

[0074] In addition to Figs. 8 to 10, as can be also seen from Fig. 11 showing a perspective view of this alternative moving shutter mechanism 10, the first magnetic elements (shutter plate side “distal” magnetic element) 200a are associated with the first shutter plate 100a. These first magnetic elements 200a are disposed on both side edges of the first shutter plate 100a. More specifically, one first magnetic element 200a is disposed on the right side shutter plate holder 500a that can face the right side prism holder 700a, with the image sensor 30 behind. Also, the other first magnetic element 200a is disposed on the left side shutter plate holder 500b that can face the left side prism holder 700b, with the image sensor 30 behind. Similarly, the first magnetic elements (shutter plate side “proximal” magnetic element) 200b are associated with the second shutter plate 100b. The first magnetic elements 200b are also disposed on both side edge of the second shutter plates 100b. More specifically, one first magnetic element 200b is disposed on the right side shutter plate holder 500c that can face the right side prism holder 700a, with the image sensor 30 behind. Also, the other first magnetic element 200b is disposed on the left side shutter plate holder 500d that can face the left side prism holder 700b, with the image sensor 30 behind.

[0075] In the following, the workings of the moving shutter mechanism 10 regarding this second embodiment will be described with reference to Fig. 12. The part (a) in Fig. 12 shows a first position in which the shutter plate 100a is positioned below (behind) the third lens 20c, the shutter plate 100b is positioned below (behind) the second lens 20b and the prism 40 is positioned below (behind) the first lens 20a. In this position, a magnetic repulsive force F as shown in the figure is acting between the first magnetic elements 200b and the second magnetic elements 300, and as a  result, the shutter plates 100a, 100b are pressed against the stopper 410a, and are held in position in contact with the stopper 410a. On the other hand, the pair of the prism holders 700a, 700b, and thus the prism 40 is positioned using the actuator such as VCM (not illustrated) .

[0076] When switching from the first position to the second position in which (i) the shutter plate 100a is positioned below (behind) the third lens 20c, (ii) the shutter plate 100b is positioned below (behind) the first lens 20a, and (iii) the prism 40 is positioned below (behind) the second lens 20b, the prism 40 will be driven to the left side using the actuator. During this process, the shutter plate 100b receives magnetic repulsive force in the right direction (this magnetic repulsive force also includes a supplemental magnetic repulsive force between the magnetic elements on the shutter plate 100a and the magnetic elements on the shutter plate 100b, which are facing each other) . Due to this magnetic repulsive force, the shutter plate 100b starts to move to the right direction. As a result, as shown in the part (b) in Fig. 7, the shutter plate 100b moves until the shutter plate holders 500c, 500d hits the stopper 410b on the right side, and the shutter plate holders 500c, 500d and thus the shutter plate 100b as well as the shutter plate holders 500a, 500b and thus the shutter plate 100a are pressed against the respective stoppers 410a, 410b by a magnetic repulsive force and are held in position in contact with the respective stoppers 410a, 410b. When switching from this second position to the third position as shown in the part (c) in Fig. 7, the same action as described with regard to “2-in-1” lens architecture takes place. In this way, two shutter plates 100a, 100b are moved separately and automatically in response to the position of the prism 40. It is obvious that the configuration of this second embodiment is similarly applicable to a “4-in-1” lens architecture, etc.

[0077] As noted above, in this second embodiment, the first magnetic elements 200a, 200b and the second magnetic elements 300 are disposed on both of the guide shaft 400a, 400b. However, in another embodiment, the first magnetic element 200a, 200b and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed only on one guide shaft side. That is, the first magnetic element 200a, 200b and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed only on left side guide shafts 400b, 600b, or the first magnetic element 200a, 200b and the second magnetic element 300 may be disposed only on right side guide shafts 400a, 600a. This structure will be adopted when so much magnetic driving force is not required to move the shutter plates 100a, 100b.

[0078] In addition, in another embodiment, as shown in Fig. 13 showing a modification of the moving shutter mechanism shown in Fig. 11, the first magnetic element 200a associated with the first shutter plate 100a may be disposed only on one side edge (for example, right side edge) of the first shutter plate 100a, and the first magnetic element 200b associated with the second shutter plate 100b may be disposed only on other side edges (for example, left side edge) of the second shutter plate 100b opposite one side edge (for example, right side edge) of the first shutter plate 100a. This configuration effectively prevents unnecessary magnetic force (repulsion or attraction) from being generated between the two shutter plates 100a, 100b when the two shutter plates 100a, 100b are directly adjacent to each other.

[0079] Next, still another preferred embodiment (third embodiment) of the present invention will be described with reference to Figs. 14 and 15. Similarly to the second embodiment, differences from the first embodiment will be mainly described.

[0080] Fig. 14 shows the moving shutter mechanism of the third embodiment, and Fig. 15 shows how this moving shutter mechanism works.

[0081] As can be seen from Fig. 14, the moving shutter mechanism 10 of the third embodiment basically has the same structure as the first embodiment. However, the moving shutter mechanism 10 of the third embodiment comprises a pair of springs 800a, 800b to assist the shutter plates 100a to start moving. More specifically, the spring 800a, 800b is a coil spring and is placed around (i.e., coaxial with) the shutter plate guide shaft 400b. In particular, these two springs 800a, 800b are placed with the shutter plate holder 500b in between. Naturally, this configuration is similarly applicable to the second embodiment as described above.

[0082] This embodiment has the following advantages. When switching the optical system, in a specific position, the magnetic force in the direction along the guide shaft becomes considerably smaller since the two opposing  magnet elements are almost completely overlapped. In this case, in order to move the shutter plate 100a against a mechanical resistance such as a friction, a magnet size needs to be enlarged. However, this conventional approach leads to an increase in size of the camera module. In order to solve such a problem, in this embodiment, two opposing springs 800a, 800b are adopted.

[0083] In this configuration, as noted above, the spring 800a, 800b helps the shutter plate 100a to start moving. Therefore, there is no need to enlarge the size of the magnet elements. More specifically, as shown in Fig. 15, when switching from the position (a) to the position (b) , the shutter plate 100a receives a magnetic repulsive force F1 in the right direction. In addition to this, the shutter plate 100a receives a mechanical force F2 from the compressed spring 800a in the right direction. Conversely, when switching from the position (b) to the position (a) , the shutter plate 100a also receives a magnetic repulsive force F1 as well as a mechanical force F2 from the compressed spring 800b in the left direction. In this embodiment, the coil spring is adopted to save an internal space of the module and to facilitate its assembly. However, it is possible to use any other means instead of an elastic means such as magnetic force generating means.

[0084] Finally, with reference to Fig. 16, an automatic return function of the shutter plate, which is effective when the shutter plate is moved accidentally by an external force, will be explained.

[0085] When a strong external force is added to a mobile electronic device in which the moving shutter mechanism of the present invention is installed, by, for example, due to a fall or vibration, the shutter plate may move against the magnetic force. That is, the shutter plate 100a that was initially placed in position (a) may move to position (b) . However, even if the shutter plate 100a is moved to an undesired position, the shutter plate 100a returns automatically to the initial position (a) due to the magnetic repulsion force F between opposing magnetic elements. Therefore, there is no need to increase the size of magnetic force in order to hold the shutter plate not to move. Furthermore, there is no need to install an external mechanical structure to return the shutter plate to the initial position, and thus the increase in size of the camera module can be prevented. In addition, high reliability can be achieved as no extra parts are required.

[0086] As such, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide a novel moving shutter mechanism which can overcome the problems in relation to prior art devices. In particular, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide a novel moving shutter mechanism (i) that allows the camera module to be made smaller; (ii) that can reduce manufacturing costs of the camera module; (iii) that can simplify the assembly of the camera module; and (iv) that can realize high reliability of the camera module.

[0087] Preferred embodiments of the present invention have been explained above with reference to the related drawings. However, the present invention is not limited to these embodiments, and various modifications and changes may be made to the above-described embodiments without deviating from the gist and scope of the present invention, and such modifications and changes are also included in the scope of the present invention.
