Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for ambient Internet of Things (IoT) device. In a solution, a first communication device transmits, to a second communication device, capability information indicating at least one supported repetition scheme of the first communication device. The first communication device receives, from the second communication device, an indication regarding a repetition of a reception from the second communication device or a repetition of a transmission associated with the reception to the second communication device. The first communication device determines repetition information based on the indication, the repetition information comprising at least one of a first repetition scheme of the transmission to the second communication device or a second repetition scheme of the reception from the second communication device. The first communication device performs at least one of the transmission or the reception based on the repetition information.

[0038] In this way, the first communication device 110 such as an ambient IoT may  communicate bidirectionally with the immediate node between the ambient IoT device and the third communication device such as the base station. The topology of the first communication device 110, the second communication device 120 and the third communication device 160 shown in FIG. 1B may be referred to as a “Topology 2” . In Topology 2, the second communication device 120 such as UE may perform as the reader, and the communication between UE and ambient IoT device may be controlled by the third communication device 160 such as gNB.

[0039] As used herein, the second communication device 120 in FIG. 1A and the third communication device 160 in FIG. 1B may also be referred to as a “ambient IoT device reader” , “passive device reader” , “IoT device reader” “reader” , “reader for the first communication device 110” . The second communication device 120 or the third communication device 160 may support one or more ambient IoT device (s) . The second communication device 120 in FIG. 1A or the third communication device 160 in FIG. 1B may operate as a UE and be referred to as “UE reader” , or may operate as a radio access network (RAN) node and be referred to as an ambient RAN (A-RAN) , or an A-RAN reader. The second communication device 120 in FIG. 1B may also be referred to as an A-RAN node or an A-RAN node serving the reader. It is to be understood that the number of devices as shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B is for purpose of illustration without any limitation. In embodiments of the present disclosure, there may be more or less devices.

[0040] Several device types are supported. That is, the first communication device 110 may be of different device types. A first device type of the first communication device 110 (referred to as Device 1) may support about 1 μW peak power consumption, have energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally.

[0041] A second device type of the first communication device 110 (referred to as Device 2a) may support less than or equal to a few hundred μW peak power consumption, have energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally.

[0042] A third device type of the first communication device 110 (referred to as Device 2b) may support less than or equal to a few hundred μW peak power consumption, hasve energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is generated internally by the device.

[0043] In some example embodiments, the first communication device 110 may support or provide a functionality, such as inventory or command. As used herein, the term “functionality” of the first communication device 110 may also be referred to as an “application” or “service” of the first communication device 110, or an “ambient IoT functionality” , “ambient IoT application” , or “ambient IoT service” .

[0044] In some example embodiments, a link from the second communication device 120 to the first communication device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the first communication device 110 to the second communication device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second communication device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the first communication device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the first communication device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the second communication device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0045] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0046] In some mechanisms, A-IoT is introduced as a study item in release (Rel) -19 with the following objects: for the Ambient IoT DL and UL: frame structure, synchronization and timing, random access; numerologies, bandwidths, and multiple access; waveforms and modulations; channel coding; downlink channel / signal aspects; uplink channel / signal aspects; or scheduling and timing relationships.

[0047] Necessary characteristics of carrier-wave waveform for a carrier wave provided externally to the Ambient IoT device are studied, including for interference handling at Ambient IoT UL receiver, and at NR base station. It is proposed that for Topology 2, no difference in physical layer design from Topology 1.

[0048] In recent years, IoT has attracted much attention in the wireless communication world. More ‘things’a re expected to be interconnected for improving productivity efficiency and increasing comforts of life. Further reduction of size, complexity, and power consumption of IoT devices can enable the deployment of tens or even hundreds of billion IoT devices for various applications and provide added value across the entire value chain. It is impossible to power all the IoT devices by battery that needs to be replaced or recharged manually, which leads to high maintenance cost, serious environmental issues, and even safety hazards for some use cases (e.g., wireless sensor in electric power and petroleum industry) .

[0049] In some mechanisms, it is proposed to capture use cases, traffic scenarios, device constraints of ambient power-enabled Internet of Things and identify new potential service requirements as well as new key performance indicators (KPIs) . It is considered devices being either battery-less or with limited energy storage capability (i.e., using a capacitor) and the energy is provided through the harvesting of radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other power source that could be seen suitable.

[0050] Considering the limited size and complexity required by practical applications for batteryless devices with no energy storage capability or devices with limited energy storage that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually, the output power of energy harvester is typically from 1μW to a few hundreds of μW. Existing cellular devices may not work well with energy harvesting due to their peak power consumption of higher than 10mW.

[0051] A procedure of a functionality of the first communication device 110 may involve the first communication device 110, the second communication device 120, the third communication device 130, and optionally one or more CN nodes or functions. As used herein, the term “functionality” of the first communication device 110 may also be referred to as an “application” or “service” of the first communication device 110, or an “ambient IoT functionality” , “ambient IoT application” , or “ambient IoT service” .

[0052] In the communication environment 100 or the communication environment 150, several use cases on ambient IoT are supported. An example use case may be a use case of indoor inventory such as a use case on ambient IoT on automated warehousing. Specifically, for such use case, when the goods are placed on shelves in the warehouse and have been stored for a certain period of time, the management platform starts the indoor inventory task periodically for double check of the goods (total goods or per different batch / group) , and generates a list of tags to be inventoried, sends the list to the  5G network. The 5G network receives the list and sends large-scale / specified inventory signals. The Ambient IoT device in the 5G network coverage may establish communication with the network. The 5G network may interact with the corresponding devices according to the inventory requirements to obtain goods information. The 5G network may send the acquired goods information to the management platform. During these procedures, the read operation may involve device-originated (DO) device-terminated triggered (DTT) traffic.

[0053] Another use case may be for indoor command, such as a use case on online modification of medical instruments status. In such use case, through 5G network and the IoT device, the medical instrument information (such as the serial number of the instrument, usage status, usage records, years of use, integrity, or the like) may be remotely read, modified and written by the medical instrument management platform. During these procedures, the write or modifying operation may involve a device-terminated (DT) traffic, and the read operation may involve a DO-DTT traffic.

[0054] It is to be understood that these described use cases are only for purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. Any suitable use case may be supported by embodiments of the present disclosure. Scope of the present disclosure is not limited here.

[0055] In some mechanisms, it provides a terminological and scoping framework for future discussions of Ambient IoT. This has defined representative use cases, deployment scenarios, connectivity topologies, Ambient IoT devices, design targets, and required functionalities; it also conducted a preliminary feasibility assessment, and gave recommendations for down-selection in setting the scope of a further study.

[0056] However, since existing technologies cannot meet all the requirements of target use cases, a new IoT technology is recommended to open new markets within 3GPP systems, whose number of connections and / or device density can be orders of magnitude higher than existing 3GPP IoT technologies. The new IoT technology shall provide complexity and power consumption orders of magnitude lower than the existing 3GPP low power wide area (LPWA) technologies (e.g. narrow band (NB) -IoT and enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) ) , and shall address use cases and scenarios that cannot otherwise be fulfilled based on existing 3GPP LPWA IoT technologies.

[0057] In some mechanisms, repetition is proposed for A-IoT reader-to-device (R2D) and  device-to-reader (D2R) transmission for coverage enhancement. For example, gain was observed in simulation results with repetition. The repetition may be indicated in control information. However, how to design or configure the repetition to enhance the coverage efficiently is a concerning problem.

[0058] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for transmission repetition for ambient IoT device. In the solution, a first communication device such as an AIoT device transmits capability information to a second communication device such as a reader for the AIoT device. The capability indicates at least one repetition scheme supported by the first communication device. The second communication device transmits, to the first communication device, an indication regarding a repetition of a reception from the first communication device or a repetition of a transmission associated with the reception to the first communication device. In response to receiving the indication, the first communication device determines repetition information based on the indication. The repetition comprises at least one of:a first repetition scheme of the transmission to the second communication device or a second repetition scheme of the reception from the second communication device. The first communication device transmits a signal to or receive a signal from the second communication device based on the repetition information.

[0059] In this way, the first communication device may determine the repetition scheme based on the indication from the second communication device. The repetition scheme may thus be aligned between the first and second communication devices. An efficient repetition can thus be ensured for coverage enhancement.

[0060] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0061] Reference is made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of signal frame structure determination in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 200 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1A and / or FIG. 1B.

[0062] In operation, the first communication device 110 transmits (220) , to the second communication device 120, capability information indicating at least one supported repetition scheme of the first communication device 110. The second communication device 120 receives (225) the capability information. As used herein, the term “repetition scheme” may refer to a scheme for generating a transmission signal with repetitions. The repetition scheme may  indicate a repetition type and / or a repetition number. Examples of repetition schemes will be described with respect to FIG. 3.

[0063] In some embodiments, the second communication device 120 may transmit (210) a request for the capability information (also referred to as a “capability request” ) to the first communication device 110. In response to receiving (215) the capability request, the first communication device 110 may transmit (220) the capability information to the second communication device 120. Alternatively, the first communication device 110 may transmit (220) the capability information without receiving the capability request from the second communication device 120. In some embodiments, if the reader for the first communication device 110 is a terminal device, that is, topology 2, the second communication device 120 or the receiving node of reported capability may be a network device. The repetition scheme determination node and / or configuration node may be network device.

[0064] The second communication device 120 transmits (235) an indication regarding a repetition of a reception from the first communication device 110 or a repetition of a transmission to the first communication device 110. The transmission is associated with the reception. The first communication device 110 receives (240) the indication. As used herein, the term “transmission to the first communication device 110” may also be referred to as a “reception from the second communication device 120” or “atransmission from the second communication device 120 to the first communication device 110” or a “first transmission” or “R2D transmission” or “DL transmission” . The term “reception from the first communication device 110” may also be referred to as a “transmission to the second communication device 120” or “atransmission from the first communication device 110 to the second communication device 110” or a “second transmission” or “D2R transmission” or “UL transmission” .

[0065] The first transmission and the second transmission are associated with each other. For example, the second transmission may be a response or acknowledgement (ACK) of the first transmission. Otherwise, the first transmission may be a response of the second transmission.

[0066] In some embodiments, a time gap between the first transmission and the second transmission may be within a time range. The time range may be predefined or configured. By way of example, if the first transmission is a response of the second transmission, a  maximum time between the second transmission and the corresponding first transmission, referred to as TR2D_max, may be predefined or configured. Alternatively, or in addition, a minimum time between the second and first transmissions, referred to as TR2D_min, may also be predefined or configured. That is, the first communication device 110 may transmit the D2R transmission within [TR2D_min, TR2D_max] since receiving a corresponding R2D transmission. The time range, minimum time and / or maximum time may be common for a plurality of AIoT devices or different for the plurality of AIoT devices. In some embodiments, the time range, minimum time and / or maximum time may be common or different for different traffic types / command types (e.g. DT or DO-DTT) and / or different use case (e.g., Inventory or Command) .

[0067] In some embodiments, the corresponding D2R transmission timing TR2D following an R2D transmission may be determined based on the control information in the R2D transmission, where TR2D ≥ TR2D_min. A maximum value (s) may be predefined or configured for TR2D.

[0068] In some embodiments, the second transmission such as an R2D transmission in response to the first transmission such as a D2R transmission is expected for the first communication device 110. In such cases, a maximum time TD2R_max between the D2R transmission and the expected R2D transmission following it may be predefined or configured. For example, the first communication device 110 may expect to receive the R2D transmission be within [TD2R_min, TD2R_max] .

[0069] In response to receiving (240) the indication, the first communication device 110 determines (250) repetition information based on the indication. The repetition information comprises at least one of a first repetition scheme of the transmission to the second communication device 120 or a second repetition scheme of the reception from the second communication device 120. The at least one supported repetition scheme includes the first repetition scheme and the second repetition scheme. For example, the indication from the second communication device 120 may indicate the first repetition scheme and / or the second repetition scheme.

[0070] In some embodiments, the second communication device 120 may determine (230) the first repetition scheme and / or the second repetition scheme. For example, the second communication device 120 may select the first repetition scheme and / or the second repetition scheme from the at least one supported repetition scheme indicated in the  capability information. In some embodiments, the at least one supported repetition scheme may indicate at least one repetition type and / or at least one maximum repetition number of the at least one repetition type. The second communication device 120 may determine the repetition number of a repetition type of the determined first or second repetition scheme based on the indicated maximum repetition number.

[0071] In some embodiments, for R2D transmission, the capability information may indicate whether the first communication device 110 is capable of reception on block level repetition and / or bit level repetition, and / or capable of reception on combined repetition scheme which includes block level and bit level repetition in a single transmission. The capability information may indicate the first communication device 110 coherent receiving / processing for block level repetition and bit level repetition separately. The capability information may indicate that the coherent receiving for block level repetition may have a higher requirement on accuracy of sample time. The capability information may indicate coherent receiving / processing by combining block level repetition and bit level repetition. For D2R transmission, the capability information may indicate whether the first communication device 110 is capable of transmission via block level repetition and / or bit level repetition. In addition, in some embodiments, the first communication device 110 may report the power or energy state which may influence the transmission power.

[0072] The second communication device 120 may determine the first and / or second repetition scheme based on the capability and the scenarios. The second communication device 120 may determine the indication based on the determined first and / or second repetition scheme. That is, the second communication device 120 may include a corresponding index of the first and / or second repetition scheme in the indication to the first communication device 110.

[0073] The first communication device 110 and the second communication device 120 communicates with each other based on the repetition information. For example, the first communication device 110 transmits (260) a transmission or a signal to the second communication device 120 based on the repetition information such as the first repetition scheme. For example, the signal transmitted to the second communication device 120 may be generated based on the first repetition scheme. The second communication device 120 receives (265) the signal based on the repetition such as the first repetition scheme. Likewise, the second communication device 120 transmits (270) a signal to the first communication device 110 based on the repetition information such as the second repetition scheme. The first communication device 110 receives (275) the signal from the  second communication device 120 based on the repetition information such as the second repetition scheme.

[0074] In some embodiments, the first repetition scheme or the second repetition scheme may include at least one repetition type and / or at least one repetition number corresponding to the at least one repetition type.

[0075] With the repetition type and repetition number, the first communication device 110 may generate a signal to be transmitted based on an original signal to be transmitted. The signal may be the original signal with repetition (s) . Likewise, the second communication device 120 may generate a signal to be transmitted to the first communication device 110 based on an original signal and the repetition scheme. FIG. 3 illustrates a flowchart of a transmission signal generation process 300 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 300 may be implemented by the first communication device 110 and / or the second communication device 120.

[0076] As illustrated, the original signal may include a plurality of bits 302. The bits 302 may be bits received from higher layers and / or physical layer. At block 310, a cyclic redundancy check attachment may be applied to the bits 302. The bits with CRC attachment may be denoted as “X0” . Next, at block 320, a repetition process is applied to X0 based on the determined repetition scheme (such as the repetition type and repetition number) , to obtain the signal with repetitions (denoted as “X1” ) . At block 330, X1 may be coded, for example based on a predefined or configured coding scheme. At block 340, a modulation or on-off keying (OOK) may be applied to the coded signal, to obtain the final signal to be transmitted. For example, the final signal may be a physical R2D channel (PRDCH) signal 342. It is to be understood that for a physical D2R channel (PDRCH) signal, a similar process will be performed.

[0077] It is to be understood the process 300 is only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. The process 300 may include more or less blocks. For example, the block 310 may be not performed in some cases. For another example, a block for forward error correction (FEC) may be applied after the block 310.

[0078] Referring back to FIG. 2, the at least one repetition type may be a block level repetition, a bit level repetition, a bit group level repetition, a combined repetition of the block level repetition and the bit level repetition, a no repetition type, or the like.

[0079] As used herein, the block level repetition means that the signal may be repeated in a unit of “block” . For example, all the bits received from higher layers and / or physical layer (according to what is present) after CRC attachment (if used) are blockwise repeated Rblock times, where Rblock denotes the repetition number for the block level repetition. Assuming a block such as “X0” after the CRC attachment is “101111010001. . . ” , the block level repetition result such as “X1” will be “101111010001. . . 101111010001... 101111010001. . . 101111010001. . . ” with the repetition number being 4.

[0080] The bit level repetition means that the signal may be repeated in a unit of “bit” . In an example (referred to as bit level type 1) , each bit after CRC attachment (if used) is repeated Rbit times, where Rbit denotes the repetition number of bit level repetition. In another example (referred to as bit level type 2) , each bit after both CRC attachment (if used) and FEC (if used) is repeated Rbit times. Taking the signal being “101111010001... ” as an example, the bit level repeated signal may be “11110000 1111 1111 1111 1111 0000 1111 0000 0000 0000 1111…. 1111 0000 0000 1111. . . ” with repetition number being 4.

[0081] The bit group level repetition means that the signal may be repeated in a unit of “a group of bits” . The number of bits in a group may be predefined or configured. Taking the signal being “101111010001. . . ” as an example, assuming that a bit group includes two bits, the bit group level repeated signal may be “10101010 11111111 11111111 0101 0101 00000000 01010101…. . ” with repetition number being 4 and bit group size being 2.

[0082] The combined repetition of the block level repetition and the bit level repetition may be that the bit level repetition and the block level repetition may be applied in combination. For example, the bit level repetition may be applied first, and the block level repetition may be applied to the signal with bit level repetition, or the block level repetition may be applied first, then bit level repetition may be applied to the signal with block level repetition. FIG. 4 illustrates an example transmitted signal with a combined repetition type in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown, the combined repetition may be applied to an original signal 400 such as bits after CRC attachment. Assuming that the repetition number of bit level repetition is 2 and the repetition number of block level repetition is 2 (total repetition number is 4) , a signal with repetition (referred to as signal 450) as shown as those bits in FIG. 4. The repetition granularity or repetition type for the combined repetition may be determined based on the indication from the second communication device 120. Repetition#1 may be seen as the bit level repetition for the original bits, and repetition#2 and repetition#3 may be seen as  the block level repetition for the whole block composed of the original bits and the bit repetition#1. Alternatively, repetition#2 may be seen as the block repetition for the original bits, and repetition#1 and repetition#3 may be seen as the bit level repetition for the signal / bits composed of original bits and repetition#2.

[0083] It is to be understood that these examples of repetition type are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. Any suitable repetition type may be applied. For example, a chip level repetition type may be applied. The chip level repetition means that each chip after line coding (if used) or after square wave modulation (if used) is repeated Rchip times, where Rchip denotes the repetition number for chip level repetition. It is also to be understood that those example repetition number, example signals or signals with repetitions are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. Any suitable repetition number may be applied. Scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0084] Still refers to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the indication may be included in a field of control information from the second communication device 120. For example, the repetition number of block level repetition and / or the repetition number of bit level repetition may be indicated in the control information directly (referred to as an explicit indication) . The indication may be a corresponding index for the repetition number based on a predefined / preconfigured mapping relationship between index and the repetition number.

[0085] By way of example, a list of candidate repetition numbers (also referred to candidate number set) for block level repetition may be 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 . . . Other number such as 4*N may be included (N being a positive integer) . These candidate numbers may be applied for UL transmission such as D2R transmission or PDRCH transmission, and / or for the communication with a type 2B device. A target repetition number may be indicated by a corresponding index in the list.

[0086] Another example list of candidate repetition numbers for block level repetition may be 1, 3, 7, 15. . . For example, other odd number may be included in the list. Such candidate list may be applied for DL transmission such as R2D or PEDCH transmission, especially for the device 1 or device 2a.

[0087] The candidate repetition number for bit level repetition may be same with or different from that illustrated / defined / configured for block level repetition. For example,  the repetition number for the bit level may be {1, 2, 4, 6, 8} or {1, 3, 5, 7} , or the like.

[0088] In some embodiments, the indication comprises a first repetition number of one of the transmission or the reception. For example, the indication may indicate one of the repetition number of the D2R transmission and the repetition number of the R2D transmission. The first communication device 120 may determine a second repetition number of the other one of the repetition number of the D2R transmission and the repetition number of the R2D transmission.

[0089] By way of example, the second repetition number may be determined further based on an offset value. The offset value may be predefined or configured.

[0090] In some embodiments, the indication may include an index corresponding to a pair of repetition numbers for the transmission and the reception. The determined repetition information may include the pair of repetition numbers. A relationship between a plurality of indices and a plurality of pairs of repetition numbers may be predefined or configured.

[0091] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the indication may include a first index for the first repetition number and a second index for the second repetition number. The relationship between a plurality of indices and a plurality of repetition numbers may be predefined or configured.

[0092] In some embodiments, the repetition numbers for both R2D transmission and D2R transmission may be indicated via control information transmitted on PRDCH. Alternatively, a single repetition number may be indicated for the corresponding transmissions. The repetition number for the corresponding transmission between R2D and D2R may be the same. Corresponding transmission means the time gap between the R2D and D2R transmission may be within the given threshold, or meets the indication of time gap.

[0093] In some embodiments, a repetition number and a repetition number difference / offset may be indicated for the corresponding transmissions. The repetition number for the D2R transmission may be higher than that of the corresponding R2D transmission.

[0094] If the transmission order is R2D and a corresponding D2R, the repetition for R2D transmission may apply the indicated repetition numbers. Repetition for D2R  transmission may apply a sum of the indicated repetition numbers and the indicated repetition offset / difference.

[0095] If the transmission order is D2R and a corresponding R2D, repetition for D2R transmission may apply the indicated repetition numbers. Repetition for R2D transmission may apply a value of the indicated repetition number minus the indicated repetition offset / difference.

[0096] The repetition numbers for the corresponding transmissions may be independent. The difference or offset value may be negative or positive one. In some embodiments, two repetition numbers may be combined / joint indicated via predefining the repetition number sets for the corresponding transmission. Two repetition numbers may be mapped to a single index as a pair / set of configurations. In some embodiments, two repetition numbers may be indicated separately.

[0097] In some embodiments, the indication may be received via an amble (referred to as an implicit indication) , the amble comprising at least one of: a preamble, a midamble, or a postamble. As used herein, a whole transmission (sometimes including all repetitions) may be divided into at least one separate part, also referred to as at least one sub data transmission. The signal frame structure may include at least one of: a preamble at a beginning of the transmission or reception, at least one midamble between two of the at least one part, a postamble at an end of the transmission or reception, or at least one gap for energy harvesting or collision handling. As used herein, the preamble may indicate a start of a signal transmission. The midamble may indicate a start of a part of data transmission except the first one, and / or indicate an end of a part of data transmission except the last one, the midamble may be used for channel estimation (for D2R) and / or synchronization. The postamble may indicate an end of the signal transmission.

[0098] It is to be understood that these signal frame structures are only for purposes of illustration, without suggesting any limitations. Any suitable signal frame structure may be applied for the transmission of the response. The indication may be indicated by the amble or any other suitable frame element or structure. Scope of embodiments of the present disclosure is not limited here.

[0099] By way of example, length of the amble may indicate a repetition number of at least one of the transmission or the reception. The length of the amble refers to a time duration length of the amble. The larger repetition number, longer length of the amble,  or vice versa. For another example, a type of the amble indicate may a repetition number of at least one of the transmission or the reception.

[0100] Table 1 below shows relationships between the lengths of amble and the repetition numbers. In the table, N denotes the original amble length determined according to other parameters. The unit of the length may be the chip length. M denotes an adjusting step for the amble length, M=1, 2, … The length of amble may be denoted as N+j*M, j=0, 1, 2, …, j is the log2 value of the repetition numbers. It is to be understood that the length of amble in Table 1 may be replaced by N*k, k=1, 2, 3, …, and k is the log2 value of the repetition numbers plus one.

[0101] Table 1

[0102] Alternatively, in some embodiments, different amble sets are defined for different repetition number. At least one amble is included in each set. Table 2 shows the amble sets defined for different repetition numbers.

[0103] Table 2

[0104] It is to be understood that the numbers used in Table 1 and Table 2 are only examples, not the limitation. The columns used in Table 1 and Table 2 are only examples, not the limitation.

[0105] In some embodiments, the indication may include at least one of: a transport block size (TBS) , a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , or a resource for the transmission or the reception. A repetition number of at least one of the transmission or the reception may be determined based on the indication.

[0106] By way of example, the repetition number for block level repetition may be indicated via the TBS, MCS, …resource allocated / indicated / configured for transmission. The repetition number may be determined based on other transmission parameters including such as MCS, coding rate, coding scheme, modulation scheme, resource in frequency domain, resource in time domain, TBS, … For example, TBSmax is determined based on the indicated MCS (coding rate…) , resource allocated for transmission. The repetition number may be determined by repetition number = round (TBSmax / TBS indicated) .

[0107] In some embodiments, a normal / named minimum coding rate: Rmin, such as Rmin=1 / 4. For the bit level repetition, a new coding rate (s) considering the repetition number (s) may be defined or configured. The new coding rate (s) is less than Rmin. The repetition number may be determined based on the new coding rate.

[0108] If a coding rate R lower than the normal / named minimum coding rate is indicated, then the coding rate is the minimum one Rmin. The repetition number for the bit level repetition may be Rmin / R. As an example, when Rmin=1 / 4, indicated coding rates {1 / 8, 1 / 16, 1 / 24, 1 / 32} are corresponding to repetition number {2, 4, 6, 8} , respectively. As another example, when Rmin=1 / 4, indicated coding rates {1 / 12, 1 / 20, 1 / 28} are corresponding to repetition number {3, 5, 7} , respectively. It is to be understood that these coding rates and repetition numbers are only for the purpose of illustrating, without suggesting any limitation.

[0109] Alternatively, or in addition, in some embodiments, a new MCS may be predefined or configured for the bit level repetition. The normal / named minimum coding rate and the normal / named minimum modulation order are Rmin and Qmin respectively,  and mapped to MCS index Imcs0. The MCS indexes considering the repetition numbers may be predefined or configured, each new MCS index may be mapped to a lower coding rate than Rmin, and is mapped to the same modulation order as Qmin. The repetition number for bit level repetition may be determined based on the new MCS index and / or new coding rate.

[0110] In some embodiments, if an MCS index lower than Imcs0 is indicated, which is mapped to coding rate R, and modulation order Qmin, then the modulation order is the normal / named minimum one Qmin, the coding rate is the normal / named minimum one Rmin. The repetition number may be Rmin / R. In some embodiments, the MCS index may be from a dedicated defined set for repetition indication, which is different with the set defined for normal or legacy MCS indication, for example, the reserved ones for modulation order adjusting when retransmission may be reused.

[0111] In some embodiments, a field may be applied to indicate whether the transmission is repeat or not, and the coding rate indication or MCS indication field is reused. A new mapping relationship between index and repetition number may be defined.

[0112] If the repetition flag=0, a legacy relationship may be used to determine the coding rate, else, the new relationship may be used to determine the repetition number. Table 3 below shows such relationships, wherein in the second column, all the repetition number is 1 with configurable coding rate, and in the third column, all the coding rates are the minimum one 1 / 8, with configurable repetition number being {2, 4, 8, 16} or {3,7, 15} .

[0113] Table 3

[0114] It is to be understood that the coding rates and repetition numbers and the mapping between coding rates and repetition numbers used in Table 3 are only examples, not the limitation. The columns used in Table 3 are only examples, not the limitation.

[0115] In some embodiments, if both the bit level repetition scheme and the block level repetition scheme are supported by both the device and the reader, then an additional field may be included in control information for the repetition scheme indication.

[0116] In some embodiments, the capability related to decoding or processing multiple repetitions may be reported before repetition number configuration / determination. The capability may indicate whether the device is capable of coherent / combined processing all the repetitions.

[0117] In some embodiments, if two types without combined scheme are supported, an additional field may be used to indicate the type. If the combined scheme is supported, in a first option, two or more bits are used to indicate the repetition type directly; in a second option, one or more bits is used to indicate whether block level repetition is applied, and bit level repetition is indicated implicitly; and in a third option, one or more bits is used to indicate whether bit level repetition is applied, and block level repetition is indicated implicitly. In some embodiments, the combined scheme may be indicated implicitly via the repetition number (s) , to save the signaling overhead.

[0118] In some embodiments, the first repetition scheme or the second repetition scheme include a combined repetition of the block level repetition and the bit level repetition. The number of repetitions of the block level repetition and the number of repetition of the bit level repetition may be indicated separately. For example, the indication filed may include a pair of repetition numbers (Ra, Rb) , where Ra denotes the repetition number for bit level repetition, such as {1, 2, 4} , and Rb denotes the repetition number for block level repetition, such as {1, 2, 4} or {1, 2, 3, 4} .

[0119] Alternatively, the number of repetitions of the block level repetition and the number of repetition of the bit level repetition may be indicated by a single indication jointly. For example, a mapping relationship between indices and the pair repetition numbers may be predefined or preconfigured. For example, block level repetition may have higher priority, or block level repetition number >= bit level repetition number.  Table 4 shows the mapping relationship between indices and the pair repetition numbers.

[0120] Table 4

[0121] It is to be understood that the indices and repetition numbers and the mapping between indices and repetition numbers used in Table 4 are only examples, not the limitation. The columns used in Table 4 are only examples, not the limitation. For example, the repetition numbers for bit level repetition or block repetition may be odd numbers illustrated in the previous description.

[0122] In some embodiments, the number of repetitions of the block level repetition may be indicated by a dedicated signaling. The number of repetition of the bit level repetition may be indicated via amble or a coding rate or a modulation and coding scheme or determined based on the number of repetitions of the block level repetition. For example, the repetition numbers for block level repetition is indicated directly, while repetition numbers for bit level repetition is indicated via special coding rate, special MCS index, or implicitly. For example, the total repetition number is determined via TBS, coding rate or MCS index, and bit level repetition number is determined according to bit level repetition number = total repetition number / block level repetition number.

[0123] In some embodiments, the number of repetitions of the bit level repetition may be indicated by a dedicated signaling. The number of repetition of the block level repetition may be determined based on amble, coding rate, or a modulation and coding scheme, the number of repetitions of the bit level repetition. For example, the repetition numbers for bit level repetition is indicated directly, while repetition numbers for block level repetition is indicated implicitly. For example, the total repetition number is determined via TBS, coding rate or MCS index, and block level repetition number is  determined according to block level repetition number = total repetition number / bit level repetition number.

[0124] In some embodiments, if the repetition number is larger than 1, the corresponding repetition is applied. That is, the repetition number being 1 may refer to the original transmission without applying the related repetition type. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the repetition number being 1 may refer to the first repetition, instead of the original transmission.

[0125] Assuming that the repetition number being 1 refers to no repetition, if both the repetition numbers are 1, then the legacy transmission scheme without repetition is applied. If both the repetition numbers are larger than 1, then the repetition type is a combined repetition type.

[0126] In some embodiments, separate repetition number offsets may be indicated / predefined / fixed / pre-configured for block level repetition and bit level repetition respectively to determine the repetition numbers between two corresponding transmissions. Alternatively, a joint repetition number offset may be indicated / predefined / fixed / pre-configured if joint coding is applied to the two repetition numbers indication.

[0127] In some embodiments, the combined repetition of the block level repetition and the bit level repetition may be applied based on at least one of: a transmission direction, or a device type. For example, for the DL transmission, bit level repetition is applied. In this way, lower complexity is enabled for decoding the information. This repetition scheme may be more suitable for device. For the UL transmission, the block level repetition is applied. In this way, higher performance with higher complexity is achieved.

[0128] In some embodiments, for device Type 1 or type 2a, the bit level repetition may be applied. For device Type 2b, the block level repetition may be applied. If considering both the transmission direction and device type, for device Type 1 and type 2a, the bit level repetition may be used for DL transmission and the block level repetition may be used for UL transmission. For device Type 2b, it may use the block level repetition for both DL reception and UL transmission, or be configurable.

[0129] In some embodiments, the combined repetition of the block level repetition and the bit level repetition may be applied based on the energy state of the first communication device 110. For low energy state, the bit level repetition may be used. For high energy state, the block  level repetition may be used. The repetition type may also be applied based on the service type.

[0130] With the combined repetition scheme or combined repetition type, the repetition efficiency can be increased by considering the timing variance of channel.

[0131] In some embodiments, for explicit indication, implicit indication via the transmission parameters such as TBS, MCS…, the repetition number offset between corresponding transmissions can also be fixed or predefined or preconfigured. For implicit indication via ambles of R2D transmission, the repetition number offset for D2R transmission corresponding to R2D transmission can also be fixed or redefined or preconfigured. For example, a common offset is defined for different devices, or different service type, or different scenarios. For another example, a mapping relationship between the repetition offset / difference and the device type / service type / scenarios may be predefined. For another example, the offset may be preconfigured according to the performance requirement based on the device type / service type / scenarios.

[0132] For explicit indication, the control information may be located at front of the PRDCH. The repetition number related field and / or the repetition type / scheme related filed may be located at the front of the control information. The control information or the repetition number related field and / or the repetition type / scheme related filed may be repeated with a fixed number to make sure the device decode the repetition indication successfully. The fixed number may be predefined according to device type, service type, or the like.

[0133] It is to be understood that although a single first communication device 110 and a single second communication device 120 is shown in FIG. 2, there may be a plurality of first communication devices and / or a plurality of second communication devices 120 in some embodiments.

[0134] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 500 implemented at a first communication device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 will be described from the perspective of the first communication device 110 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B.

[0147] In some example embodiments, the first repetition scheme or the second repetition scheme comprises a combined repetition of the block level repetition and the bit level repetition, the number of repetitions of the block level repetition is indicated by a dedicated signaling, and the number of repetition of the bit level repetition is indicated via a coding rate or a modulation and coding scheme or determined based on the number of repetitions of the block level repetition.
