AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing HMD calibration methods are unreliable, inaccurate, and inflexible due to the invisibility of markers and the need for numerous markers, which is not feasible in realistic scenarios, particularly in medical settings like radiotherapy systems.

Method used

A method using image features from a fixed-position camera and a head-mounted display device (HMD) to determine matching anchor pairs, allowing calibration of the HMD coordinate system relative to a static reference system, even in dynamic environments, by employing image-processing algorithms like SURF, SIFT, and ORB for feature extraction and triangulation.

Benefits of technology

Enables reliable and flexible HMD calibration, addressing drift issues and accommodating moving components, ensuring precise localization and navigation in medical settings.

Abstract

Disclosed is a computer-implemented method comprising obtaining camera image data acquired by a fixed-position camera and depicting a scene, e.g. a scene including one or more medical devices, the camera coordinate system being calibrated relative to a static reference system; obtaining HMD image data acquired by a head mounted display device, HMD, concurrently with the camera image data; determining, in the camera image data, a plurality of image features to be used as first anchors; determining, in the HMD image data, a plurality of image features, the image features to be used as second anchors; obtaining a plurality of matching pairs of first anchors and second anchors; and calibrating, using at least some of the plurality of matching pairs of first anchors and second anchors, the HMD coordinate system relative to the camera coordinate system and, thereby, relative to the static reference system.
