AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Decoding variable-length prefix code data streams is inefficient for modern CPUs due to the need to process bits sequentially, leading to high power consumption, latency, and large device size, especially in applications like video compression where frequent small memory transactions and unpredictable branch operations occur.

Method used

Utilizing an acceleration table that maps fixed-length bit combinations to decoded symbols, allowing simultaneous access and lookup of multiple bits to decode the majority of symbols without sequential processing, reducing memory transactions and branch operations.

Benefits of technology

This approach significantly improves decoding performance by 3 to 10 times with minimal increase in power consumption or device size, making it more efficient for high-demand applications like video compression.

Abstract

55 ABSTRACT Decoding of variable-length prefix code data of an image data stream A computer processing system for decoding an image data stream which includes 5 variable-length character-strings representing symbols which have been encoded in accordance with a variable-length prefix encoding scheme. The symbols represent image data. The computer processing system comprising processing logic configured to receive the image data stream and query an acceleration table on the computer processing system with a fixed number of characters of the received image10 data stream to identify an entry of the acceleration table. Each of a plurality of the entries of the acceleration table indicates a decoded symbol to be returned, and the acceleration table has multiple entries which indicate the same decoded symbol represented by a character-string having fewer than said fixed number of characters. The computer processing system is further configured to, if the identified entry 15 indicates a decoded symbol, output the decoded symbol indicated by the identified entry for use in forming an image.
