[0039] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and  playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0040] The MAC CE based signaling may be one of the signalings to indicate the OD-SSB transmission on the secondary cell (SCell) . For a cell supporting on-demand SSB SCell operation, an RRC based signaling, a MAC CE based signaling, or a DCI based signaling may be supported to indicate on-demand SSB transmission on the cell. In this case, the DCI signaling may not provide SCell activation / deactivation. The DCI may include UE-specific or group-common DCI contents, etc.

[0041] Inventors notice that there is a need to study how to indicate the OD-SSB transmission based on the MAC CE. For example, whether the network may indicate the configuration of OD-SSB, whether the network may indicate the activation or start of OD-SSB transmission, or whether the network may indicate the configuration and activation of OD-SSB transmission may need to be studied. As an example implementation, the network may indicate activation of the OD-SSB transmission with the MAC CE signaling, where the configuration of OD-SSB transmission may be provided prior to the UE, e.g., via a radio resource control (RRC) of an SCell configuration signaling, or a further RRC configuration. As another example implementation, the network device may indicate the configuration of OD-SSB transmission as well as the activation of the OD-SSB transmission with the same MAC CE signaling.

[0042] Moreover, in the technical specification (TS) 38.321 of the 3GPP, there are two MAC CEs specified for SCell Activation / Deactivation purposes as quoted below, where the enhanced SCell Activation / Deactivation MAC CE may also enable a tracking reference signal (TRS) related transmission and measurement during the SCell activation procedure. The TRS ID field may only be included for the activated SCell, and if the value of the TRS ID field is set to zero, it may indicate no TRS is used for the corresponding SCell.

[0043] Furthermore, the OD-SSB transmission on SCell may be activated in an SCell-specific way, meaning that:

[0044] - some / subset of the activated SCell (s) may have the OD-SSB transmission together with the TRS transmission;

[0045] - some / subset of the activated SCell (s) may ONLY have the OD-SSB transmission without the TRS transmission;

[0046] - some / subset of the activated SCell (s) may NOT have the OD-SSB transmission but with only the TRS transmission; or

[0047] - some / subset of the activated SCell (s) may have neither OD-SSB transmission nor TRS transmission.

[0048] Thus, there is a need to allow the MAC CE signaling to provide flexibility to the above OD-SSB transmission for the activated SCell. In view of the above, how to design  an OD-SSB transmission mechanism is an important issue to be solved. Especially, how to support and specify the MAC CE signaling in detail to indicate the OD-SSB transmission is activated / deactivated on the SCell may need to be investigated.

[0049] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a scheme for an OD-SSB transmission. With this scheme, a network device transmits, to a terminal device, a MAC CE comprising at least one identifier indicative of whether an OD-SSB transmission is activated for one or more cells. Moreover, the terminal device monitors the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells based on the MAC CE, if the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the one or more cells.

[0050] By comprising at least one identifier indicative of whether an OD-SSB transmission is activated for one or more cells in the MAC CE, it is allowed to support a flexible MAC CE based OD-SSB transmission. In this way, it is allowed to improve transmission efficiency.

[0051] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is first made to FIG. 1, which illustrates an example environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.

[0052] The environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, comprises a terminal device 110 and a network device 120 communicating with each other. The communication between the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may be direct or indirect. As an example, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may communicate with one or more further devices not shown in FIG. 1.

[0053] To transmit data and / or control information, the terminal device 110 may perform communications with the network device 120. A link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) .

[0054] Although the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 are described in the communication environment 100 of FIG. 1, embodiments of the present disclosure may apply to any other suitable communication devices in communication with one another. That is, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the exemplary scenarios of FIG. 1. In this regard, it is noted that although the terminal device is schematically depicted as a mobile phone and the network device 120 is schematically depicted as a base station in FIG.  1. It is understood that these depictions are exemplary in nature without suggesting any limitation. In other embodiments, the first device 110 and the network device 120 may be any other communication devices, for example, any other wireless communication devices.

[0055] It is to be understood that the particular number of various communication devices and the particular number of various communication links as shown in FIG. 1 is for illustration purpose only without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of communication devices and any suitable number of communication links for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. In addition, it should be appreciated that there may be various wireless as well as wireline communications (if needed) among all of the communication devices.

[0056] The communications in the environment 100 may follow any suitable communication standards or protocols, which are already in existence or to be developed in the future, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , 6G, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, and machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , Carrier Aggregation (CA) , Dual Connectivity (DC) , and New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.

[0057] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling flow 200 between a terminal device and a network device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the signaling flow 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0058] As shown in FIG. 2, the network device 120 transmits (205) , to the terminal device 110, a MAC CE comprising at least one identifier indicative of whether an OD-SSB transmission is activated for one or more cells. Accordingly, the terminal device 110 receives the MAC CE from the network device 120. For example, the MAC CE may comprise a legacy MAC CE or an extended MAC CE. A cell of the one or more cells may be an SCell. For instance, if the MAC CE indicates that the OD-SSB transmission is activated for one or more SCells, the MAC CE may also be referred to as an SCell activation  command. As an example, a cell of the one or more cells may be provided by the network device 120. As another example, a cell of the one or more cells may be provided by another network device.

[0059] In some example embodiments, before the MAC CE transmission, the network device 120 may transmit configuration information for one or more cells to the terminal device 110 (unshown in FIG. 2) . As an example, the configuration information may comprise OD-SSB transmission related configuration information for the one or more cells, based on which the terminal device 110 may be configured with an OD-SSB transmission. For example, according to the OD-SSB transmission related configuration information, a cell of the one or more cells may be configured with one or more OD-SSB configurations. Alternatively or additionally, the configuration information may comprise a TRS transmission related configuration information for the one or more cells, based on which the terminal device 110 may be configured with a TRS transmission.

[0060] Introducing new MAC CE case

[0061] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may be associated with a new logical channel identifier (LCID) . The LCID may comprise a legacy LCID or an extended LCID (eLCID) . In this case, the MAC CE may be a new MAC CE which is introduced to indicate (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission.

[0062] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise an identifier (also referred to as a first identifier) associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more cells, and the terminal device 110 may determine whether the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the at least one cell based on the first identifier. In this case, when the first identifier comprises a first value, the OD-SSB transmission may be activated for the at least one cell, and when the first identifier comprises a second value, the OD-SSB transmission may be deactivated for the at least one cell. For instance, if the value of the first identifier is set to 1, the OD-SSB transmission may be activated for the at least one cell, and if the value of the first identifier is set to 0, the OD-SSB transmission may be deactivated for the at least one cell. As an example, the first identifier associated with a cell of the one or more cells may comprise a Ci field associated with the cell.

[0063] In some implementations, the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells may be associated with the (de) activation of the one or more cells (in other words, the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells may be  applied together with the cell (de) activation for the one or more cells) . In this case, if the value of the first identifier corresponding to at least one cell is set to the first value (for example, 1) , the at least one cell may be activated and the OD-SSB transmission may also be activated for the at least one cell. In this case, if the value of the first identifier corresponding to the at least one cell is set to the second value (for example, 0) , the at least one cell may be deactivated and the OD-SSB transmission may also be deactivated for the at least one cell.

[0064] In some other implementations, the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells may be not associated with the (de) activation of the one or more cells (in other words, the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells may be applied independently from the cell (de) activation for the one or more cells) . For example, the value of the first identifier corresponding to the at least one cell being set to the first value (for example, 1) may only mean that the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the at least one cell. In the example embodiments where the first identifier comprises the Ci field, the Ci field may be re-defined. In this case, as an example implementation, for a cell with a corresponding Ci field value set to 1, it may mean that independent from cell (de) activation, (i.e., no matter whether currently the corresponding cell is or is not at the activation status) , the terminal device 110 may need to perform a corresponding measurement based on the OD-SSB transmission (that is, monitor the OD-SSB transmission) on the cell. As an example implementation, for a cell with corresponding Ci field value set to 0, it may mean that independent from cell (de) Activation, (i.e., no matter whether currently the corresponding cell is or is not at the activation status) , in the meanwhile, there may be no OD-SSB transmission on the cell.

[0065] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may further comprise an identifier (also referred to as a second identifier) associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells. In this case, the second identifier may be a common indication for the one or more cells. The second identifier may be used to determine whether the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the one or more cells. As an example, the second identifier may comprise a reserved bit field (i.e., R-field) in the Ci field octet of the MAC CE.

[0066] In some implementations, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined based on the first identifier and the second identifier. As an example, if the second identifier comprises a second value (for example, 0) , the OD-SSB transmission may be deactivated for the one or more cells. As another example, if the second identifier  comprises a first value (for example, 1) , whether the OD-SSB transmission is activated for at least one cell of the one or more cells may further depend on the first identifier associated with the at least one cell. In this case, if the first identifier comprises a first value (for example, 1) , the OD-SSB transmission may be activated for the at least one cell, and if the first identifier comprises a second value (for example, 0) , the OD-SSB transmission may not be activated for the at least one cell.

[0067] In the implementations where the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells is associated with the (de) activation for the one or more cells, if the value of the second identifier for the one or more cells is set to 0, the OD-SSB transmission may not be activated for all the one or more cells, and if the value of the second identifier for the one or more cells is set to 1, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission for at least one cell of the one or more cells may further need to be determined with a combination of the value of the first identifier. In this case, if the value of the first identifier corresponding to at least one cell is set to 1, the at least one cell may be activated and the OD-SSB transmission may also be activated for the at least one cell. If the value of the first identifier corresponding to the at least one cell is set to 0, the at least one cell may be deactivated and the OD-SSB transmission may also be deactivated for the at least one cell.

[0068] In the implementations where the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells is not associated with the (de) activation of the cell for the one or more cells, if the value of the second identifier for the one or more cells is set to 0, the OD-SSB transmission may not be activated for all the one or more cells, and if the value of the second identifier for the one or more cells is set to 1, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission for at least one cell of the one or more cells may further need to be determined with a combination of the value of the first identifier. In this case, setting the value of the first identifier corresponding to at least one cell to 1 may represent that the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the at least one cell. In this case, if the value of the first identifier corresponding to the at least one cell is set to 0, the OD-SSB transmission may also be deactivated for the at least one cell.

[0069] In some example embodiments, in addition to the above first identifier and the second identifier, the MAC CE may further comprise an identifier (also referred to as a third identifier) associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more cells. The third identifier may be specific to the at least one cell. For example, the third identifier may comprise a field specific to the at least one cell, for example, also referred to  as an OD-SSB field or OD-SSB identifier (ID) field. The third identifier indicates an OD-SSB configuration configured for the at least one cell.

[0070] In some implementations, if the OD-SSB transmission is activated for at least one cell, there may be a third identifier associated with the at least one cell in the MAC CE. In other words, whether the MAC CE comprises the third identifier may be determined based on the first identifier and / or the second identifier. That is, the first identifier and / or the second identifier may also indicate (or in other words, be associated with) whether one or more third identifiers are included for the one or more cells. As an example, if the second identifier is set to a first value, and the first identifier for at least one cell is set to a first value, the third identifier for the at least one cell may be included in the MAC CE. Alternatively or additionally, in some cases, the third identifier may not be present in the MAC CE when the OD-SSB transmission is activated. In this case, there may be an example implementation where the second identifier is set to a first value, the first identifier for a cell is set to a first value, but the third identifier may also not be present in the MAC CE.

[0071] In some other implementations, if the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for at least one cell, there may be no third identifier to be included for the at least one cell in the MAC CE. For example, if the second identifier is set to a second value, no third identifier may be included in the MAC CE. As another example, if the second identifier is set to a first value, and the first identifier for at least one cell is set to a second value, no third identifier may be included in the MAC CE.

[0072] As an example implementation, if the third identifier is present in the MAC CE, and if the OD-SSB transmission related configuration information for the at least one cell comprises a plurality of OD-SSB configurations for the OD-SSB transmission on the at least one cell, the third identifier may indicate an OD-SSB configuration (i.e. one) of the plurality of OD-SSB configurations to be used for the OD-SSB transmission on the at least one cell. As an example, if there is a list of OD-SSB configurations configured for the at least one cell, the OD-SSB ID field associated with the at least one cell may indicate an index of one of the OD-SSB configurations.

[0073] As another example implementation, if there is only one OD-SSB configuration configured for the at least one cell, the third identifier may also be used to further indicate whether the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the at least one cell. In other words, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined further based on the third  identifier. In this case, assuming a single OD-SSB configuration is configured for the at least one cell, the OD-SSB transmission may be activated for the at least one cell when the third identifier comprises a first value and the OD-SSB transmission may be deactivated for the at least one cell when the third identifier comprises a second value. As an example, the OD-SSB ID field may be set to 0 to indicate no OD-SSB transmission is used for the at least one cell, and the OD-SSB ID field may be set to 1 to indicate OD-SSB transmission is used for the at least one cell assuming a single OD-SSB configuration is configured. Alternatively or additionally, if there is only one OD-SSB configuration configured for the at least one cell, the third identifier may not be included in the MAC CE.

[0074] In the example embodiments where the terminal device 110 is configured with a TRS transmission, the MAC CE may comprise one or more identifiers (also referred to as one or more fourth identifiers) associated with a TRS transmission on the one or more cells. The fourth identifier may also be referred to as the TRS ID field. Thus, in some example implementations, depending on the configuration information of at least one cell of the one or more cells (for example, whether both an OD-SSB transmission and a TRS transmission are configured for the at least one cell) , the third identifier associated with the at least one cell may be included together with the fourth identifier associated with the at least one cell, or be included without the fourth identifier in the MAC CE.

[0075] In the example embodiments where the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission is applied independently from the cell (de) activation, there may be no field related to the TRS transmission to be present when the value of the second identifier is set to 1. In this case, for example, the MAC CE may contain one or more Ci fields that indicate OD-SSB transmissions of which SCell (s) is activated, one R-field, and zero or more OD-SSB ID fields (with no legacy TRS fields) in an ascending order based on the ScellIndex for the one or more SCells indicated by the one or more Ci fields with its value set to 1.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise at least one third identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell, for which the OD-SSB transmission is activated, of the one or more cells respectively, and the MAC CE may comprise at least one fourth identifier associated with the TRS transmission on the at least one cell respectively (in other words, both the OD-SSB transmission and the TRS transmission may be activated) , the at least one third identifier and the at least one fourth identifier may be comprised in the MAC CE in a variety of approaches.

[0077] As an example, a third identifier of the at least one third identifier corresponding to a respective cell of the at least one cell may be comprised in the MAC CE, adjacent to a fourth identifier of the at least one fourth identifier corresponding to the respective cell. As an example implementation, for the case when both OD-SSB ID fields and TRS ID fields are present in the MAC CE, a newly added OD-SSB ID field may be included with close-by to a TRS ID field for a given cell. In this case, for example, the newly added OD-SSB IDx field may be included with close-by to the TRS IDx field for a given activated cell x (where x is an index of the cell) . FIG. 3A illustrates an example MAC CE structure according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, in which the newly added OD-SSB IDx field is included with close-by to the TRS IDx field for a given activated cell x. Referring to FIG. 3A, the MAC CE includes 7 bits of Ci fields and 1 bit R field. The MAC CE further includes N number of 8 bits TRS IDN fields and N number of 8 bits OD SSB IDN fields. For example, the TRS ID1 field indicates TRS configuration (or activation of the TRS) in the at least one cells. If the TRS ID6 field is set to 0 but the OD SSB ID6 field is set to 1, it indicates that the TRS is not configured and the OD-SSB is configured to the corresponding at least one cell (e.g., cell 6) .

[0078] As another example, the at least one third identifier may be comprised in the MAC CE, after the at least one fourth identifier. As an example implementation, for the case when both OD-SSB ID fields and TRS ID fields are present in the MAC CE, the OD-SSB ID fields may be added sequentially after the TRS ID fields. FIG. 3B illustrates an example MAC CE structure according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, in which the OD-SSB ID fields are comprised in the MAC CE sequentially after the TRS ID fields.

[0079] As a further example, the at least one fourth identifier may be comprised in the MAC CE, after the at least one third identifier. As an example implementation, for the case when both OD-SSB ID fields and TRS ID fields are present in the MAC CE, the OD-SSB ID fields may be added sequentially before the TRS ID fields. FIG. 3C illustrates an example MAC CE structure according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, in which the OD-SSB ID fields are comprised in the MAC CE sequentially before the TRS ID fields.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise at least one third identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell, for which the OD-SSB transmission is activated, of the one or more cells respectively, without the fourth identifier. In other words, in this case, only the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the at least one cell without the configured TRS transmission. As an example implementation, for  the case when only OD-SSB ID fields are present in the MAC CE, the OD-SSB ID fields may be added sequentially in the MAC CE. FIG. 3D illustrates an example MAC CE structure according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, in which the OD-SSB ID fields are added sequentially immediately after the Ci and R field in the MAC CE.

[0081] In the example embodiments where the activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the one or more cells is associated with the activation for the one or more cells, if the value of the first identifier corresponding to at least one cell of the one or more cells is set to 1, the at least one cell may be activated and the third identifier and / or the fourth identifier may be comprised in the MAC CE depending on the configuration information for the at least one cell (for example, in some cases, both the third identifier and the fourth identifier may be comprised in the MAC CE for the at least one cell) , and if the value of the first identifier corresponding to the cell is set to 0, the at least one cell may be deactivated and the OD-SSB transmission / the TRS transmission may also be deactivated for the at least one cell.

[0082] Reusing existing MAC CE case

[0083] In some embodiments, the indication of the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission may reuse an existing MAC CE (for example, SCell activation / deactivation MAC CE) with an extension.

[0084] In some embodiments, the above at least one identifier may comprise a second identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells. For example, the OD-SSB transmission may be activated for at least one cell configured with an OD-SSB configuration of the one or more cells when the second identifier comprises a first value (for example, 1) . As another example, the OD-SSB transmission may be deactivated for the at least one cell when the second identifier comprises a second value (for example, 0) . For example, the second identifier may comprise the R-field. In the example embodiments where the second identifier comprises the R-field, the second identifier may need to be set to 1, to indicate the reuse of the MAC CE to indicate the (de) activation of the OD-SSB transmission.

[0085] In some example embodiments, in addition to the second identifier, the at least one identifier may further comprise a first identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more cells. In this case, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined based on the first identifier and the second identifier. The  first identifier may comprise the Ci field.

[0086] As the existing MAC CE is reused, no new SSB ID field (s) may be introduced or added (or in other words, needed) in the MAC CE. In this case, only one OD-SSB configuration may be considered for the OD-SSB transmission of at least one cell of the one or more cells, and thus configured for the at least one cell, for example, in an RRC signaling. In some embodiments, for a single RRC configuration, a list of cells may be configured with OD-SSB transmission (s) , where different OD-SSB configurations may be associated with different cells in the RRC configuration. As an example implementation, changing the OD-SSB configuration for a cell may be performed via the RRC re-configuration.

[0087] In the example embodiments where the first identifier comprises the Ci field, the Ci field may work the same way as the legacy. In this case, the second identifier (for example, R-field) may be utilized to indicate the activation / deactivation of the single OD-SSB configuration. For example, when the value of the R-field is set to 1, the OD-SSB transmission associated with cell (s) configured within the single OD-SSB configuration may be activated, and when the value of the R-field is set to 0, the OD-SSB transmisison associated with cell (s) within the OD-SSB single configuration may be deactivated. More specifically, when the C3 field is set to 1 and the R field is set to 1, at least one cell (e.g., cell 3) corresponding to the C3 field is activated and the OD-SSB is activated at the at least one cell. In addition, when the C3 field is set to 1 and the R field is set to 0, at least one cell (e.g., cell 3) corresponding to the C3 field is activated and the OD-SSB is deactivated at the at least one cell.

[0088] In the example embodiments where the first identifier comprises the Ci field, the Ci field may be redefined or re-interpreted as an indication of activation / deactivation of the OD-SSB transmission for at least one cell of the one or more cells. In this case, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined based on the first identifier and the second identifer. For example, assuming the second identifier is set to a first value (for example, 1) to indicate the reuse of the existing MAC CE, the OD-SSB transmission may be activated for the at least one cell when the first identifier comprises a first value (for example, 1) , or the OD-SSB transmission may be deactivated for the at least one cell when the first identifier comprises a second value (for example, 0) .

[0089] Referring back to FIG. 2, after receiving the MAC CE, the network device 120 causes (210) the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells, if the OD-SSB transmission  is activated for the one or more cells. In the example embodiments where the one or more cells are provided by the network device 120, the network device 120 may perform the OD-SSB transmission to the terminal device 110. In the example embodiments there is a cell of the one or more cells provided by another network device, the network device 120 may indicate the other network device to perform the OD-SSB transmission on the cell to the terminal device 110, and the network device 120 may further perform the OD-SSB transmission on at least one other cell (if any) of the one or more cells to the terminal device 110. Accordingly, the terminal device 110 monitors (215) the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells based on the MAC CE, if the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the one or more cells. The terminal device 110 may perform the monitoring based on the configuration information obtained from the network device 120.

[0090] In a case where both a TRS transmission and an OD-SSB transmission are performed, the terminal device 110 may monitor the OD-SSB transmission together with the TRS transmission after receiving the MAC CE. In this case, the terminal device 110 may be expected to monitor both OD-SSB signal (s) and TRS signal (s) starting from receiving the MAC CE. Additionally or alternatively, the timing for the TRS transmission may be configurable with reference to the timing of the MAC CE. For example, a timer or a time offset may be configured by the network device 120 to the terminal device 110, and the timing may be calculated based on the timer or the time offset.

[0091] In another case where both a TRS transmission and an OD-SSB transmission are performed, the terminal device 110 may monitor the TRS transmission after receiving the OD-SSB transmission. In this case, the terminal device 110 may monitor the TRS transmission after the OD-SSB transmission, such that the terminal device 110 is expected to perform the TRS monitoring and reception with a certain time offset after the end of the OD-SSB transmission. For example, the timing for the TRS transmission may be configurable with reference to the timing of the OD-SSB transmission. For instance, the TRS transmission may be started after the network device 120 has transmitted a certain number / time period of OD-SSB transmissions.

[0092] In the example embodiments where the second identifier comprises the R-field, when the value of second identifier is set 0, the format of legacy Ci field (s) , R-field, and / or TRS fields may be kept as the legacy.

[0093] According to some embodiments with reference to FIGS. 2 to 3D, by comprising at  least one identifier indicative of whether an OD-SSB transmission is activated for one or more cells in the MAC CE, it is allowed to support a flexible MAC CE based OD-SSB transmission. In this way, it is allowed to improve transmission efficiency.

[0094] FIG. 4 illustrates a flowchart 400 of a method implemented at a terminal device according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0095] At block 410, the terminal device 110 receives, from a network device, a media access control (MAC) control information (CE) comprising at least one identifier indicative of whether an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) transmission is activated for one or more cells.

[0096] At block 420, the terminal device 110, monitors the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells based on the MAC CE, based on determining that the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the one or more cells.

[0097] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise a first identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more cells, and the terminal device may further determine an activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the at least one cell when the first identifier comprises a first value.

[0098] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier further may comprise a second identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells, and the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined based on the first identifier and the second identifier.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may further comprise a third identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the at least one cell of the one or more cells. In some example embodiments, the third identifier may indicate an OD-SSB configuration of a plurality of OD-SSB configurations for the OD-SSB transmission on the at least one cell. In some example embodiments, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined further based on the third identifier. In some example embodiments, the terminal device may further determine that the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for the at least one cell when the third identifier comprises a second value.

[0100] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may further determine that the at least one cell is activated when the first identifier comprises the first value.

[0101] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise one or more fourth identifiers associated with a tracking reference signal (TRS) transmission on the one or more cells.

[0102] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE may be associated with a new logical channel identifier (LCID) .

[0103] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise a second identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells, and the terminal device may further determine an activation of the OD-SSB transmission for at least one cell of the one or more cells when the second identifier comprises a first value, wherein the at least one cell is configured with an OD-SSB configuration. In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may further comprise a first identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more cells, and the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be determined based on the first identifier and the second identifier.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may further determine that the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for the at least one cell when the first identifier comprises a second value.

[0105] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may further determine that the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for the at least one cell when the second identifier comprises a second value.

[0106] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart 500 of a method implemented at a network device according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 will be described from the perspective of the network device 120 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0107] At block 510, the network device 120 transmits, to a terminal device, a media access control (MAC) control information (CE) comprising at least one identifier indicative of whether an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) transmission is activated for one or more cells.

[0108] At block 520, the network device 120 causes the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells, if the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the one or more cells.

[0109] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise a first identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more  cells, and the network device may further indicate an activation of the OD-SSB transmission for the at least one cell by setting the first identifier to comprise a first value.

[0110] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier further may comprise a second identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells, and the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be indicated based on the first identifier and the second identifier.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier further may comprise a third identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the at least one cell of the one or more cells. In some example embodiments, the third identifier may indicate an OD-SSB configuration of a plurality of OD-SSB configurations for the OD-SSB transmission on the at least one cell. In some example embodiments, the activation of the OD-SSB transmission may be indicated further based on the third identifier. In some example embodiments, the network device may further indicate that the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for the at least one cell by setting the third identifier to comprise a second value.

[0112] In some example embodiments, the network device may further indicate that the at least one cell is activated by setting the first identifier to comprise the first value.

[0113] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise one or more fourth identifiers associated with a tracking reference signal (TRS) transmission on the one or more cells.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE may be associated with a new logical channel identifier (LCID) .

[0115] In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier may comprise a second identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells, and the network device may further indicate an activation of the OD-SSB transmission for at least one cell of the one or more cells by setting the second identifier to comprise a first value, and the at least one cell is configured with an OD-SSB configuration. In some example embodiments, the at least one identifier further may comprise a first identifier associated with the OD-SSB transmission on at least one cell of the one or more cells, and the activation of the OD-SSB transmission is indicated based on the first identifier and the second identifier.

[0116] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may further indicate that the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for the at least one cell by setting the first identifier to comprise a second value.

[0117] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may further indicate that the OD-SSB transmission is deactivated for the at least one cell by setting the second identifier to comprise a second value.

[0118] In some example embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing the method 400 (for example, the terminal device 110) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 400. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0119] In some example embodiments, the apparatus comprises means for receiving, from a network device, a media access control (MAC) control information (CE) comprising at least one identifier indicative of whether an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) transmission is activated for one or more cells; and means for monitoring the OD-SSB transmission on the one or more cells based on the MAC CE, based on determining that the OD-SSB transmission is activated for the one or more cells.
