AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing communication networks face issues with service interruptions when the validity time of a Closed Access Group (CAG) identifier expires, leading to the disallowance of user equipment (UE) from using associated radio resources.

Method used

The UE is equipped with mechanisms to request and receive an extension of the CAG identifier's validity time before expiration, allowing it to continue using radio resources by initiating a renewal process with network entities, and the network proactively manages handovers to ensure seamless service continuity.

Benefits of technology

This approach ensures continuous service for the UE by extending the CAG identifier's validity time and facilitating timely handovers to suitable cells, preventing service disruptions.

[0095] Fig. 10 shows an example of an apparatus.Detailed Description

[0096] The following embodiments are provided by way of non-limiting and illustrative example. Although this disclosure may refer to “an” , “one” , or “some” embodiment (s) in several locations of the text, this does not necessarily mean that each reference is made to the same embodiment (s) , or that a particular feature only applies to a single embodiment. Single features of different embodiments may also be combined to provide other embodiments. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection of an embodiment, it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to apply such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described. It shall be understood that although the terms “first, ” “second” and the like may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another.

[0097] For the purposes of this disclosure, the phrases “at least one of A or B” , “at least one of A and B” , and “A and / or B” means (A) , (B) , or (A and B) . For the purposes of this disclosure, the phrase “A, B, and / or C” means (A) , (B) , (C) , (A and B) , (A and C) , (B and C) , or (A, B, and C) .

[0098] Embodiments described may be implemented in a communication network, such as any of the following radio access technologies (RATs) : Worldwide Interoperability for Micro-wave Access (WiMAX) , Global System for Mobile communications (GSM, 2G) , GSM EDGE radio access Network (GERAN) , General Packet Radio Service (GRPS) , Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS, 3G) based on basic wideband-code division multiple access (W-CDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, and enhanced LTE (eLTE) , 5G (also called NR) , or any future RAT such as 6G. Moreover, communication within the communication network may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , and / or Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) .

[0099] As used herein, the term “network device” or “network node” refers to a node in a communication network via which user equipment may access the network and / or which is capable of controlling radio communication and managing radio resources within a cell. The network node or network device may be referred to as a base station (BS) , an access point (AP) or an access node. The network device may be, depending on the applied technology, for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio head (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, or an aircraft network device.

[0100] Moreover, in connection of split radio access network (RAN) , the network device may refer to a centralised unit (CU) of a base station and / or a distributed unit (DU) of a base station. An interface between CU and DU may be referred to as an F1 interface in NR. In the split RAN architecture, node operations may be carried out, at least partly, in the central / centralized unit, CU, (e.g. server, host or node) operationally coupled to the DU, (e.g. a radio head / node) . One CU may control one or more DUs, acting at least as transmit / receive (Tx / Rx) nodes. In some embodiments, the DUs may comprise e.g. a radio link control (RLC) , medium access control (MAC) layer and a physical (PHY) layer, whereas the CU may comprise the layers above RLC layer, such as a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio resource control (RRC) and an  internet protocol (IP) layers. Other functional splits are possible too. In practice, any processing task may be performed in either the CU or the DU and the boundary where the responsibility is shifted between the CU and the DU may depend on the applied implementation.

[0101] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example, a terminal device may be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , or a Mobile Station (MS) . The terminal device may include a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, USB dongles, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like.

[0102] A term “resource” , as used herein, may refer to radio resources in time domain, in frequency domain, in space domain, and / or in code domain. Some examples of resources include e.g. a physical resource block (PRB) , a radio frame, a subframe, a time slot, a sub band, a frequency region, a sub-carrier, a beam, etc. The term “transmission” and / or “reception” may refer to wirelessly transmitting and / or receiving via a wireless propagation channel on radio resources.

[0103] Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a 5G system (5GS) 100. The 5GS may comprise a user equipment (UE) 102 (which may also be referred to as a communication device or a terminal) , a 5G radio access network (5GRAN) 104, a 5G core network (5GCN) 106, one or more internal or external application functions (AF) 108 and one or more data networks (DN) 110.

[0104] An example 5G core network (CN) comprises functional entities. The 5GCN 106 may comprise one or more Access and mobility Management Functions (AMF) 112, one or more session management functions (SMF) 114, an authentication server function (AUSF) 116, a Unified Data Management (UDM) 118, one or more user plane functions (UPF) 120, a Unified Data Repository (UDR) 122 and / or a Network Exposure  Function (NEF) 124. The UPF is controlled by the SMF (Session Management Function) that receives policies from a PCF (Policy Control Function) .

[0105] The CN is connected to a UE via the Radio Access Network (RAN) . The 5GRAN may comprise one or more gNodeB (gNB) s. The RAN may comprise one or more access nodes. The 5G RAN is sometimes referred to as NG-RAN (next generation RAN) .

[0106] A User Plane Function (UPF) referred to as PDU Session Anchor (PSA) may be responsible for forwarding frames back and forth between the DN and the tunnels established over the 5G towards the UE (s) exchanging traffic with the DN.

[0107] In Public Network Integrated Non-Public Networks (PNI-NPN) , a Closed Access Group (CAG) identifies a group of subscribers who are allowed to access one or more CAG cells of PNI-NPN. The CAG cells are identified by CAG ID (s) . A CAG cell is a cell broadcasting one or several CAG IDs. A small base station that is broadcasting CAG IDs may be referred to as a Femto base station. Whether a UE allowed to access one or more CAG cells may be configured in user subscription data and on the UE.

[0108] With current proposals, when a UE is served by a CAG cell for some services, and the validity timer of the CAG ID of this cell expires in the UE allowed CAG ID list, the UE is not allowed any longer to use the resources of the CAG cell and the services may be interrupted. Some embodiments may address this issue.

[0109] In some embodiments, one or more cells may be associated with a given CAG ID. A UE may be allowed to use any cells associated with a given CAG ID if the CAG ID is allowed for the UE. If a given CAG ID is allowed for a UE, this means that the UE is allowed to use radio resources of one or more cells associated with CAG ID. When the CAG ID is not allowed for the UE, the UE is not allowed to use radio resources of one or more of the cells associated with the CAG ID.

[0110] In some embodiments, a UE may be allowed to use the radio resources of one or more cells associated with CAG ID provided that the validity time associated with the CAG ID allowance by the UE has not expired for the UE. If the validity time expires, then the UE is not allowed to use the radio resources of any cells associated with CAG ID.

[0111] In some embodiments, the validity time of the CAG ID for the UE may be extended before its expiry so that the UE can continue using the resources associated with a current CAG ID. In some embodiments, an extended expiry itself may be extended.

[0112] In some embodiments UE requests that the CAG ID membership / allowance validity time be extended when it detects the membership validity time associated with the CAG ID is close to expiry. For example, the UE may request an extension or renewal of the CAG membership validity time if there is a threshold amount of time until the validity time expires.

[0113] In some embodiments, a network entity will request an extension of the validity time of the UE’s CAG membership time when the network entity detects the UE’s membership validity associated with the CAG ID is close to expiry.

[0114] In some embodiments, the radio access node, for example NG-RAN, is made aware of the CAG ID expiry time and attempts to handover the UE to another suitable cell before the CAG ID expiry time. The radio access node may be aware of the allowed CAG IDs of the UE and the associated (membership) validity time for the UE. The radio access node may determine that the (membership) validity time of a CAG ID of the cell serving a UE is going to expire for this UE and try to handover the UE to another suitable cell. This may be a neighbour cell of another CAG ID which is still valid for the UE or an open / hybrid cell.

[0115] Reference is made to Figures 2A and B. This shows an example procedure of some embodiments. This shows an example procedure where the UE initiates a CAG membership renewal procedure. The UE may request to extend the CAG membership time when it is determined by the UE that the CAG membership validity time will expire within, for example a threshold time. This procedure may be used to extend an initial expiry or to extend an already extended expiry.

[0116] As referenced at 1, the UE registers with network. This may be as defined in TS 23.502 clause 4.2.2.2.2.

[0117] As referenced at 2, the AMF sends a message to the UE. The message may be a registration accept message. The message may comprise one or more or a list of CAG IDs. For each CAG ID, the message may comprise information about the expiry time of the allowance of the closed access group identifier for the user equipment. This may be provided by a validity time. This may be regarded as an initial or first expiry. The UE will be able to use a cell associated with the CAG ID so long as the validity time has not expired.

[0118] As referenced at 3, the UE stores the one or more CAG IDs. The UE may also store for each CAG ID information about the expiry, for example the time of the expiry. The UE may store the CAG ID information in non-volatile memory.

[0119] As referenced at 4, the UE detects or determines that the validity of the CAG ID of the serving cell for the UE is about to expire. The UE may for example determine that there is a threshold amount of time or less than a threshold amount of time until the validity of the CAG ID expires for the UE.

[0120] As referenced at 5, the UE sends a message to the network. This may be in response to determining the validity of the CAG ID of the serving cell for the UE is about to expire or is within a threshold amount of time before expiry. The message may be sent to the AMF. The message sent to the network may be a NAS (non-access stratum) message or any other suitable message.

[0121] In some embodiments, the message may be a request for a renewal of the CAG subscription or membership of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE. The request may comprise the CAG ID of the serving cell for the UE.

[0122] In some embodiments, the message may be a notification. The UE may notify the network about the status of the CAG subscription or membership of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE. The request may comprise one or more CAG ID(s) of the serving cell for the UE. The message may indicate that that the validity time is within a threshold amount of time of the expiry time.

[0123] As referenced at 6, the AMF may send a message to the PCF. The message may be to request a CAG subscription renewal of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE. The message may comprise the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE. The AMF may invoke a policy control update for the CAG subscription renewal of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE. The AMF may send a Npcf_AMPolicyControl_Update API to the PCF. The request for the CAG subscription renewal may comprise an associated policy control request trigger. For example the trigger may be CAG_SUSCRIPTION_RENEWAL.

[0124] A decision may be made to renew the CAG subscription of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE by extending the validity time. This means that the UE will continue to receive the service from serving cell associated with the CAG ID.

[0125] For example, as referenced at 7, the operator may decide to renew the CAG subscription of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE.

[0126] In another example, based on a pre-defined policy, the PCF may renew the CAG subscription of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE.

[0127] In another example, the Femto cell owner may be involved in the decision as to whether to approve the renewal request or not via the Application Function (AF) . This example is shown in the part of the procedure referenced at 7a to d.

[0128] The AF may be web-based tool which interacts with the PCF via a NEF.

[0129] As referenced at 7a, the PCF sends a request for renewal of the CAG subscription of the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE to the NEF. This may be an NEF message (e.g. Nnef_CagSubscriptionRenewal) such as shown in Figure 2A. In other embodiments, the message may a PCF service message. The request may comprise the CAG ID. The request may comprise an ID of the UE. The ID of the UE may be an IP address of the UE.

[0130] As referenced at 7b, the NEF sends the received request to the AF. The service from the NEF to AF may be a NEF service. The request may be a NEF message.

[0131] As referenced at 7c, the AF provides a response message to the NEF. The response may indicate that the request for renewal has been granted. The response message may comprise the updated expiry time.

[0132] As referenced at 7d, the NEF provides the response message from the AF to the PCF. may comprise the updated expiry time. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the NEF may update the UDM / UDR based on the response message.

[0136] The AMF may update its mobility restriction list (MRL) with the updated expiry time and may also update the NG-RAN node accordingly. If the subscription is renewed the CAG ID is maintained in the allowed CAG ID list with an updated expiry time for the UE.Otherwise the CAG ID is removed from the allowed CAG ID list for the UE at the initial expiry time.

[0137] As referenced at 11, the AMF sends a message to the UE. This message may be a CAG subscription renewal success message. The message may comprise the CAG ID with the updated expiry time. The UE may update the CAG ID expiry time which it stores, for example in the non-volatile memory.

[0138] As referenced at 12, the AMF updates the gNB with the new MRL containing the updated list of allowed CAG IDs and their associated updated expiry time, The gNB may use the updated list and / or time to control the access of the UE to the cell associated with a respective CAG ID.

[0139] As referenced at 13, the UE continues to use radio resources of the cell associated with the CAG ID until the updated time expires.

[0140] Reference is made to Figure 3. This shows an example procedure of some embodiments. This shows an example procedure where the network initiates a CAG membership renewal procedure. This procedure may be used to extend an initial expiry or to extend an already extended expiry.

[0141] As referenced at 1, the UE registers with network. This may be as defined in TS 23.502 clause 4.2.2.2.2.

[0142] As referenced at 2, the PCF detects that one of the CAG IDs of the allowed CAG ID list for the UE is about to expire.

[0143] In some embodiments, the operator and / or network may decide to renew the membership of the UE for this CAG ID.

[0144] The renewal decision may be automatic or dynamic. The renewal decision may be based on pre-defined policies. The renewal decision may be made manually. The renewal decision may be made by the operator, the Femto cell owner, or by authorized administration

[0145] In one example, the CAG ID subscription renewal for UE may be done based on the pre-defined or configured policies at the PCF. The policies at PCF may be provided by the operator. The policies may be based on the interest of Femto cell owner.

[0146] Another example will be described with reference to the parts of the procedure referenced at 2a to 2d. The PCF, upon detecting the need for renewal, informs the AF via NEF (AF may be web-based tool used by the Femto cell owner) . The Femto cell owner may decide whether to renew or reject the renewal request from the PCF.

[0147] As referenced at 2a, the PCF sends a request for renewal of the CAG subscription of the UE for the CAG ID associated with the serving cell of the UE to the NEF. This may be an NEF message (e.g. Nnef_CagSubscriptionRenewal) . In other embodiments, the message may a PCF service message.. The request may comprise the CAG ID. The request may comprise an ID of the UE. The ID of the UE may be an IP address of the UE.

[0148] As referenced at 2b, the NEF send the received request to the AF.

[0149] As referenced at 2c, the AF provides a response message to the NEF. The response may indicate that the request for renewal has been granted. The response message may comprise the update expiry.

[0150] As referenced at 2d, the NEF provides the response message from the AF to the PCF Alternatively, in some embodiments, the NEF directly updates UDM / UDR with the updated expiry timer provided in the AF response message.

[0151] In another alternative, the Femto cell owner may initiate the renewal of the membership of the UE for its CAG ID via the AF. This may be initiated by a notification that a CAG ID of the allowed CAG ID list for the UE is about to expire or there is a threshold amount of time until expiry. This may alternatively be initiated by a determination by the Femto cell owner that a CAG ID of the allowed CAG ID list for the UE is about to expire or there is a threshold amount of time until expiry.

[0152] An example where the Femto cell owner initiates the CAG ID subscription renewal is shown in the parts of the procedure referenced at 2e to 2h.

[0153] As referenced at 2e, the AF sends an update request to the NEF. The update may be a Nnef_ServiceParameter or Nnef_ParameterProvision update. This update is to initiate the renewal of the membership of the UE for one or more of its allowed CAG ID(s) . This may comprise the CAG ID.

[0154] As referenced at 2f, the NEF sends the update request to the PCF. The update may be Npcf_AMFPolicyAuthorization update. It may include an updated CAG ID expiry  time in some embodiments. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the NEF directly updates UDM / UDR with the updated expiry timer provided in the AF response message.

[0155] As referenced at 2g, the PCF sends an update response to the NEF. The response may be a Npcf_AMFPolicyAuthorization update response. This may comprise an updated expiry in some embodiments.

[0156] As referenced at 2h, the NEF provides the update response to the AF. The update response may be a response to the update request. The response may be a Nnef_ServiceParameter or Nnef_ParameterProvision update response.

[0157] As referenced at 3, the PCF or NEF updates the subscription information. The subscription information may be stored in the UDR. The subscription information may indicate a member status for the UE. The member status may be member. The subscription information may indicate the updated expiry time for the CAG ID. If the location of the UE has changed, the location information associated with the UE may optionally be changed. The PCF or NEF may update the subscription information by sending a request to the UDM / UDR. The request may be a Nudr_Update_Request message. If the subscription is renewed, the CAG ID is maintained in the allowed CAG ID List with an updated expiry time for the UE. Otherwise the CAG ID is removed from the allowed CAG ID List for the UE at the initial expiry time.

[0158] As referenced at 4, the UDR updates the UE subscription data in the database. The UDR may update the CAG member status to member for the CAG ID. The UDR may update the expiry time for the CAG ID. Optionally the UDR may update the location of the UE. The UDR may send a response to the PCF. The response may be Nudr_DM_Update response message. If the subscription is renewed, the CAG ID is maintained in the allowed CAG ID List with an updated expiry time for the UE. Otherwise the CAG ID is removed from the allowed CAG ID List for the UE at the initial expiry time.

[0159] As referenced at 5, the PCF may send a notification to the AMF. This notification may be a Npcf_Notify notification. The notification may comprise the updated expiry time for the CAG ID.

[0160] As referenced at 6, a message may be sent to the UE from the AMF. This may be a CAG subscription renewal update / confirm / success / response message. This may be a UE configuration update message. The message may comprise an updated list of one or more CAG IDs and their respective updated expiry time.

[0161] As referenced at 7, the UE may respond to the AMF with a complete message. This may indicate the renewal of the CAG ID has been completed / acknowledged and the UE has the updated expiry for the CAG ID.

[0162] As referenced at 8, the AMF updates the gNB with a new MRL containing the updated list of allowed CAG IDs and / or the updated expiry time. Optionally the gNB is provided with their associated expiry time. The gNB may use the updated list and time (s) to control the access of the UE to the cell associated with the CAG ID.

[0163] As referenced at 9, the UE continues to use radio resources of the cell associated with the CAG ID until the updated time expires.

[0164] Reference is made to Figure 4. This shows an example procedure of some embodiments. This shows an example procedure where the UE is handed over to a neighbour cell before the expiry of the allowance of the closed access group identifier for the user equipment.

[0165] As referenced at 1, the UE registers with network. This may be as defined in TS 23.502 clause 4.2.2.2.2.

[0166] As referenced at 2, the AMF sends a message to the UE. The message may be a registration accept message. The message may comprise one or more or a list of allowed CAG IDs. For each CAG ID, the message may optionally comprise information about the expiry time of the allowance of the closed access group identifier for the user equipment. This may be provided by a validity time. This may be regarded as an initial expiry time. The UE will be able to use a cell associated with the CAG ID so long as the validity time has not expired.

[0167] As referenced at 2bis, the AMF sends to the gNB a list of allowed CAG IDs for the UE. The gNB is provided with the respective expiry time of the CAG IDS.

[0168] The UE may be triggered by the gNB to make one or more measurements of one or more neighbour cells and send one or more measurement reports to the gNB before the expiry of the CAG ID validity for the UE. The gNB will receive the one or more measurement reports prior to the expiry of the CAG ID validity for the UE.

[0169] The UE may receive a measurement configuration message from the gNB, such as referenced at 3.

[0170] The measurement configuration of some embodiments, may cause the UE to make and report one or more neighbour cell measurements even if the radio conditions in the current serving cell are good. In one embodiment the measurements are started by the UE at reference 3.

[0171] In another example, the measurement configuration at reference 3 may further indicate a specific time when the one or more neighbour cell measurements are to be made and / or when the one or more measurement reports are to be sent to the gNB. In this example, the UE will be triggered to make the one or more measurements at the  specific time. The specific time is selected by the gNB such that it occurs in advance of the expiry time.

[0172] In another example, the measurement configuration may indicate a time offset threshold with respect to expiry time which indicates to the UE when the one or more neighbour cell measurements are to be made and / or when the one or more measurement reports are to be sent to the gNB. In this example, the UE will monitor the validity time (received earlier, typically at reference 2 or reference 3) to determine when to trigger the making of the one or more measurements.

[0173] In another example, the receiving of the measurement configuration itself may trigger the UE to make the one or more neighbour cell measurements and provide the one or more measurement reports to the gNB.

[0174] As referenced at 4, the UE may send a configuration complete message to the gNB. This may be sent when the UE has stored the required measurement configuration or put in place the required measurement configuration. The configuration complete message may be a RRC reconfiguration complete message.

[0175] As referenced at 5, if the measurement trigger is based on the time offset threshold with respect to the expiry time of the CAG validity time, the UE detects that the expiry time of the CAG ID of the serving cell is within the time offset and trigger the measurement report.

[0176] As reference at 6, when the UE is triggered to do so as per the different options listed above the UE will make one or more measurements of one or more neighbour cells and send one or more measurement reports to the gNB. The measurement report may comprise information on the access of a neighbour cell –e.g. open or closed or hybrid,

[0177] As referenced at 7, before expiry of the validity time of the CAG ID of the serving cell for the UE, the gNB will have received the CAG IDs and  / or the access mode supported by neighbour cells. This information may be received via the Xn interface from, for example, other gNBs. The gNB will decide to handover the UE to a target gNB cell. This may be based on the one or more measurement reports received from the UE before the expiry of the validity time. The target cell may be an open cell (that is a non-CAG cell) or an hybrid cell or a CAG cell for which the CAG ID is still valid for the UE.

[0178] In some embodiments, a target CAG cell if found may be given a higher priority than an open cell. :

[0179] If the UE is allowed to access non-CAG cells, and a non-CAG cell is found suitable for the handover the gNB may select this cell.

[0180] As referenced at 8, the UE is handed over to the new cell. This may be done using usual handover procedures. For example by gNB sending an RRC message containing a handover command to the UE.

[0181] If the gNB does not find a suitable cell for the UE to be handed over to from the one or measurement reports before the CAG ID validity time expiry, then as referenced at 9, the gNB releases the UE context from the network when validity timer expires.
