[0006] This document relates to pyrotechnic devices commonly known as “sparklers.” For example, this document relates to sparkler compositions, e.g., sparkler compositions useful for indoor use.

[0007] BACKGROUND

[0008] Fireworks are often on display at celebratory occasions. Among prominent displays is the 4thof July holiday in the U.S., and fireworks displays are often part of celebrations at other times and worldwide, such as at the New Year holiday each year, at Halloween, at musical concerts, at birthday celebrations, at various sporting events, and the like. One fireworks product often seen at such displays is the sparkler.

[0009] A sparkler is a device that emits brilliant sparks upon burning. Conventional sparklers generally are made of a long, thin stick or metal wire having a flammable, spark-emitting coating, e.g., a phosphorous compound, thereon. When the coated end of the sparkler remote from the hand hold is ignited, e.g., with a match, lighter, punk, etc., the coating ignites, sparks are randomly emitted as the ignition point travels down the wire, usually for a few minutes, and the spark burns out when it reaches the end of the coating and before contacting the hand of the user.

[0011] This document provides a sparkler device and sparkler compositions. For example, this document provides sparkler compositions useful for indoor use. The sparkler compositions provided herein produces less smoke than a traditional sparkler (e.g., the sparkler device releases an amount of smoke at least less than about 50% of a Attorney Docket No.: 54737-0003W01 traditional sparkler or e.g., the sparkler device releases an amount of smoke at least less than about 50% of a fountain sparkler). As used herein, a “traditional sparkler” refers to a device including a thin metal or wooden rod coated in a composition comprising (a) one or more of steel, iron, magnesium, and aluminum in an amount of about 40 wt% based on the total weight of the composition; (b) potassium nitrate or barium nitrate in an amount of about 50 wt% based on the total weight of the composition; (c) dextrin in an amount of about 8 wt% to about 10 wt% based on the total weight of the composition; and optionally (d) sulfur or charcoal in an amount of 2 wt% or less. As used herein, a “fountain sparkler” refers to a device including a tube that includes about 5% potassium perchlorate, about 12% titanium, about 3% ammonium perchlorate, and about 80% nitrocellulose. For example, a fountain sparkler is shown in FIG. 1. This document provides sparkler compositions with high color contrast. For example, the sparkler compositions provided herein produce high color contrast (e.g., the sparkler compositions provided herein produce at least 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% or 50% more color contrast than a fountain sparkler). Examples of high color contrast sparklers as disclosed herein are shown in FIG. 2 to FIG. 4. The document provides sparkler devices with an ignition unit. For example, the ignition unit is bound to the outer surface of the sparkler device and can be used to ignite the sparkler device without the use of any additional ignition device.

[0012] In one aspect, this document provides sparkler compositions comprising: a metallic fuel, one or more oxidizers, a binder, and one or more colorants. 3. The sparkler composition of claim 1 or 2, wherein the amount of the metallic fuel present in the sparkler composition is about 15 wt% to about 20 wt% based on the total weight of the sparkler composition.

4. The sparkler composition of any one of claims 1-3, wherein the amount of the one or more oxidizers present in the sparkler composition is about 10 wt% to about 25 wt% based on the total weight of the sparkler composition.

A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 18 wt% to about 22 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;Attorney Docket No.: 54737-0003W01(b) about 23 wt% to about 27 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(c) about 48 wt% to about 52 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(d) about 3 wt% to about 7 wt% copper oxide, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.

22. A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 18 wt% to about 22 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(b) about 23 wt% to about 27 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(c) about 48 wt% to about 52 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(d) about 3 wt% to about 7 wt% barium nitrate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.

23. A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 18 wt% to about 22 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(b) about 23 wt% to about 27 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(c) about 48 wt% to about 52 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; and(d) about 3 wt% to about 7 wt% sodium carbonate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.Attorney Docket No.: 54737-0003W0124. A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 8 wt% to about 12 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(b) about 18 wt% to about 22 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; and(c) about 68 wt% to about 72 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.

A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 18 wt% to about 22 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(b) about 8 wt% to about 12 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(c) about 38 wt% to about 42 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; and(d) a mixture comprising: about 3 wt% to about 7 wt% titanium, about 8 wt% to about 12 wt% aluminum, about 1 wt% to about 5 wt% gold gum, about 6 wt% to about 10 wt% ammonium perchlorate, and about 2 wt% to about 6 wt% copper oxide, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.

26. A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 13 wt% to about 17 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(b) about 18 wt% to about 22 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(c) about 48 wt% to about 52 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(d) about 5 wt% to about 9 wt% strontium nitrate, based on the total weight of theAttorney Docket No.: 54737-0003W01 sparkler composition;(e) about 6 wt% to about 10 wt% copper oxide, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.

27. A sparkler composition comprising:(a) about 15 wt% to about 19 wt% titanium, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(b) about 10 wt% to about 12 wt% ammonium perchlorate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(c) about 48 wt% to about 52 wt% nitrocellulose, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(d) about 2 wt% to about 6 wt% strontium nitrate, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition;(e) about 2 wt% to about 6 wt% copper oxide, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; and(f) a mixture comprising: about 1 wt% to about 5 wt% titanium, about 2 wt% to about 6 wt% aluminum, about 1 wt% to about 5 wt% gold gum, about 1 wt% to about 5 wt% ammonium perchlorate, and about 0.1 wt% to about 4 wt% copper oxide, based on the total weight of the sparkler composition; wherein the sparkler composition is substantially free of aluminum, magnesium, iron, ferrotitanium, ferrocene, nitroglycerin, and chloride salts.

28. A sparkler device comprising:(a) a tube;(b) a sparkler composition of any one of claims 1-27; and(c) an ignition unit; wherein the sparkler composition is contained within the tube, and the ignition unit is bound to the outer surface of the tube.

29. The sparkler device of claim 28, wherein the tube is a cardboard tube.Attorney Docket No.: 54737-0003W0130. The sparkler device of claim 29, wherein the cardboard tube has a diameter of about 4 cm to about 5.6 cm.

31. The sparkler device of claim 29 or 30, wherein the cardboard tube has a diameter of about 4.8 cm.

32. The sparkler device of any one of claims 29-30, wherein the cardboard tube has a cardboard thickness of about 1.0 cm to about 2.0 cm.

33. The sparkler device of any one of claims 29-32, wherein the cardboard tube has a cardboard thickness of about 1.5 cm.

34. The sparkler device of any one of claims 29-33, further comprises a skewer attached to one end of the cardboard tube.

35. The sparkler device of any one of claims 29-34, wherein the ignition unit comprises a striking material and a lighting tip.

36. The sparkler device of any one of claims 29-35, wherein the striking material comprises antimonium.

37. The sparkler device of any one of claims 29-36, wherein the lighting tip comprises a match, sealant lacquer, and potassium chlorate.

38. A method of producing the sparkler composition of any one of claims 1-27, the method comprising:(a) drying the binder;(b) pulverizing the metallic fuel, the one or more oxidizers, and the one or more colorants; and(c) combining the binder, the metallic fuel, the one or more oxidizers, and the one or more colorants; thereby producing the sparkler composition.Attorney Docket No.: 54737-0003W0139. A method of producing the sparkler device of any one of claims 28-37, the method comprising:(a) drying the binder and the tube(b) pulverizing the sparkler composition; and(c) combining the sparkler composition in a tube; thereby producing the sparkler device.

40. The method of claim 39, further comprising:(d) compacting the sparkler composition in the tube.

41. A method of igniting the sparkler device of any one of claims 28-37, the method comprising igniting the ignition unit.

42. The method of claim 41, which is performed indoors.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein the sparkler device releases an amount of smoke less than about 50% of a traditional sparkler.
