[0002] Computer-implemented method for guiding positioning of a wearable device on a user

[0003] Technical Field

[0004] The invention relates to computer-implemented methods for guiding positioning of a wearable device on a user, to mobile devices, kits, computer programs and computer-readable storage media for performing the methods. The devices and methods according to the present invention may be used for long-term monitoring of body functions, such as for long-term monitoring of a mechanical characteristic of a heart of a user. The invention may both be applied in the field of home care as well as in the field of professional care, such as in hospitals. Other applications are feasible.

[0005] Background art

[0006] In the field of cardiac signal monitoring, wearable devices are known making use of motion sensors, such as acceleration sensors and / or gyroscopes, to determine gyrocardiograms of a user. The wearable device may be attached to the user via a wearable sensor patch, e.g. to a chest of the user. The motion sensors of the wearable may be used to detect motions of the chest of the user that can be associated with at least one mechanical characteristic of a heart of the user. The placement of the wearable sensor patch, such as an orientation and / or a body location on the user, may be crucial, in particular for high-performance micro- as well as macro-motion detection and classification. An automatic check of the placement of the wearable sensor patch, such as an orientation and / or a body location on the user, may be performed to verify correct placement and / or compensate for sensor misplacement, specifically for minor to medium sensor misplacement. However, automatically checking the placement of the user may only be used for preventing measurements with the wearable device in case of medium to strong misplacement.

[0007] Methods and devices are known for guiding and / controlling application of medical devices on a user. For example, US 10,810,758 B2 discloses a method of directing positioning of ECG electrodes on a patient including receiving at a processor an image of a patient from a camera of an augmented reality device. The processor analyzes the image for anatomical landmarks on the patient and generates an overlay image. The overlay image is shown over the real time image of the patient on the augmented reality device. The overlay image includes visual indicators of the desired electrode placement. The method further includes determining whether the actual location of each of the electrodes is correct and provides information on the augmented reality device as to whether the electrodes and lead placement is correct. An image of the electrode placement is stored with the ECG measurements, which can be used to verify correct electrode placement and to confirm consistent electrode placement over serial measurements. The augmented reality device allows for gesture control by the clinician.

[0008] US 2019 / 0341149 Al describes medical devices and related augmented reality systems and methods. A method of facilitating operation of a medical device involves identifying a current state of a user interface of the medical device based at least in part on a portion of the medical device captured by an imaging device, generating guidance information pertaining to the current state of the user interface, and presenting a guidance overlay including the guidance information pertaining to the current state of the user interface using augmented reality.

[0009] US 2021 / 0280291 Al discloses computer implemented methods for supporting an operation of a drug delivery device including the steps of: capturing, by a camera of a mobile device, a marker representative of a position of the drug delivery device; transmitting, by the mobile device, camera data of the camera relating to the captured marker to a provider; providing in response to the transmitted camera data, by the provider, drug delivery device data to the mobile device; displaying, by the mobile device, in a camera preview the received drug delivery device data, wherein the displaying may be controlled by a projection of the marker. The drug delivery device data includes instructions to a user relating to an operation of the drug delivery device.

[0010] US 2024 / 161491 Al describes a method including obtaining an ultrasound image of an anatomical area from an ultrasound imaging device; inputting the ultrasound image into a first stage of a convolutional neural network, the first stage configured to determine key-point locations of the anatomical area; generating, for each of the key -point locations, a cropped region of the ultrasound image; inputting each of the cropped regions into a second stage of the convolutional neural network, the second stage configured to locate an anatomical landmark of the anatomical area; and outputting a location of the anatomical landmark.

[0011] US 2020 / 121249 describes a method and an apparatus comprising a processor to provide guidance for placement of a wearable device. At least one image of the body of a subject is acquired from one or more cameras. The at least one acquired image is analyzed to recognize body parts of the subject and to identify a body part of the subject at which to place the wearable device. Guidance to place the wearable device at the identified body part of the subject is provided.

[0012] Despite the advantages achieved by known methods and devices, several technical challenges remain. Specifically, precisely positioning the wearable device on the user may still be technically challenging. Further, an automatic placement detection may only be used to prevent measurements and / or inform the user to remove and replace or reposition the wearable sensor patch. In case of repositioning of the wearable device, reduced adhesive performance of the sensor patch may have to be accepted. Thus, there is a need for ensuring precise positioning of wearable devices on the user.

[0013] Problem to be solved

[0014] It is therefore desirable to provide methods and devices which at least partially address above-identified technical challenges. Specifically, devices and computer-implemented methods for guiding positioning of a wearable device on a user shall be provided which enable precisely positioning the wearable device on the user.

In the method, as will be outlined in further detail below, as an example, step v) may comprise providing the guiding signals 128 together with the image data of step ii) to the user 112. The guiding signals 128 may be provided with the image data as an overlay, specifically to provide an augmented reality to the user 112.

[0133] Figure 2 shows a flow chart of an embodiment of a computer-implemented method for guiding positioning of a wearable device 116 on a user 112. The wearable device 116 comprises at least one motion sensor 118. The method comprises using a mobile device 114 comprising at least one camera 120 and at least one display device 122. For example, the method may comprise using the wearable device 116 and the mobile device 114 as shown in Figures 1 A to 1C.

[0134] The method comprises the following steps, which may be performed in the given order. A different order, however, may also be feasible. Further, two or more of the method steps may be performed simultaneously. Thereby, the method steps may at least partly overlap in time. Further, the method steps may be performed once or repeatedly. Thus, one or more or even all of the method steps may be performed once or repeatedly. The method may comprise additional method steps, which are not listed herein.

[0135] The method comprises the following steps: i) (denoted by reference number 130) receiving motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 in a starting position of the wearable device 116; ii) (denoted by reference number 132) receiving image data of at least a part of a chest of the user 112 and at least a part of the wearable device 116 from the camera 120 of the mobile device 114; iii) (denoted by reference number 134) determining a target positioning area for positioning the wearable device 116 on the chest of the user 112; iv) (denoted by reference number 136) determining a direction of motion of the wearable device 116 towards the target positioning area using the motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 in the starting position and the target positioning area; v) (denoted by reference number 138) providing guiding signals 128 via the display device 122 of the mobile device 114 indicating the direction of motion; and vi) (denoted by reference number 140) providing at least one signal of confirmation in case the wearable device 116 is in the target positioning area.

[0136] The method may be started e.g. when the wearable sensor 116 is removed from a transport or storage configuration sleep-state (denoted by reference number 141).

[0137] In the method, step i) may comprise at least one initial moving step comprising prompting the user 112 to move the wearable device 116 in a predefined moving sequence with the starting position as an end position of the moving sequence. The motion data obtained during the predefined moving sequence may be used for determining an orientation estimate of the wearable device 116. The orientation estimate of the wearable device 116 and the starting position may be used for determining the direction of motion of the wearable device 116. As an example, the starting position may comprise the wearable device 116 held by the user 112, specifically with horizontally stretched arms. Step i) may comprise prompting the user 112 to pick up the wearable device 116 such as to hold the wearable device 116 with horizontally stretched arms. For example, the initial moving step may comprise promoting the user to hold the wearable device 116 in a left hand of the user 112 and to move the left arm with the wearable device 116 fully upwards, downwards, left and right, preferably in this order.

[0138] In step ii), the mobile device 114 may be brought in front of the user 112 such that the user 112, specifically the chest of the user 112, is visible in a field of view of the camera 120, and optionally in a field of view of a LIDAR sensor of the mobile device 114.

[0139] Further, the target positioning area may comprise a predefined target positioning estimate. Step iii) may further comprise adapting the predefined target positioning estimate using the image data of at least part of the chest of the user 112 to determine the target positioning area. The adapting of the predefined target positioning estimate may comprise taking into account at least one image-derived information on at least one of a general body feature of the user 112, e.g. the chest of the user 112, specifically a bottom of the sternum of the user 112; a gender specific body feature of the user 112; a visible detection of one or more prior wearable device positions; skin irritations. Thus, in this example, the method may comprise, specifically prior to step iii), identifying the at least one image-derived information on the user 112 in the image data of step ii) (denoted by reference number 142). The predefined target positioning area may then be adapted in accordance with at least one rule selected from the group consisting of when possible at same location as prior wearable device position; when possible not at same location as prior wearable device position; bra-suited location. Preferably, the predefined target positioning area may be adapted in accordance with the following order of rules: adapt the predefined target positioning area to a bra-suited location; adapt the predefined target positioning area to a different but close to prior wearable device position if skin irritation occurred; use the prior wearable device position if no skin irritation has occurred.

[0140] The method may further comprise step viii) (not shown as a separate step in Figure 2), comprising updating the guiding signals 128 based on continuously received motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 and / or continuously received image data from the camera 120 of the mobile device 114. Specifically, updating of the guiding signals 128 may comprise an actualization of the direction of motion based on newly received motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 and / or newly received image data from the camera 120 of the mobile device 114. Thus, specifically, the updating may comprise repeatedly performing steps i), ii) and iv), wherein, more specifically, the actual position of the wearable device 116 is the starting position for the repeated step i).

[0141] The method may further comprise determining an actual orientation of the wearable device 116 using the motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 (denoted by reference number 144). For example, the motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 obtained during motion of the wearable device 116 from the starting position to the target positioning area may be used to determine the actual orientation of the wearable device 116. Additionally or alternatively, the image data of the part of the wearable device 116 may be used to determine the actual orientation of the wearable device 116. The actual orientation of the wearable device 116 may specifically be determined using motion data from the motion sensor 118 of the wearable device 116 in or at least near the target positioning area. Thus, for example, the actual orientation of the wearable device 116 may be determined in case the wearable device 116 is within predefined boundaries within the target positioning area. Step v) may further comprise providing guiding signals 128 via the display device 122 of the mobile device 114 indicating bringing the wearable device 116 into a predefined target orientation in case the actual orientation deviates from the predefined target orientation.

[0142] The guiding signals 128 of step v) may comprise at least one of a visual guiding signal, a haptic guiding signal and an acoustic guiding signal. As an example, the guiding signals 128 may comprise a visual indication, e.g. an arrow or the like, indicating the direction of motion of the wearable device 116 towards the target positioning area. Additionally or alternatively, the guiding signals 128 may comprise a visual indication of the target positioning area in the image data of step ii). Additionally or alternatively, the guiding signals 128 may comprise a visual indication indicating a rotation of the wearable device 116 to bring the wearable device 116 in a target orientation. For example, in case of visual guiding signals, step v) may comprise providing the guiding signals 128 together with the image data of step ii). The guiding signals 128 may be provided with the image data as an overlay, specifically to provide an augmented reality to the user 112.

[0143] Further, step vi) may comprise providing the signal of confirmation via at least one of the mobile device 114 and the wearable device 116. The signal of confirmation may be provided via the mobile device 114, e.g. via the display device 122 of the mobile device 114. The signal of confirmation may comprise at least one signal selected from the group consisting of: an acoustic signal; a haptic signal; a vibrational signal; a visual signal. As an example, the signal of confirmation may appear on the display device 122 in case the wearable device 116 is in the target positioning area. Alternatively or additionally, the signal of confirmation may comprise a change of a form and / or a color of a visual indication on the display device 122. Alternatively or additionally, the mobile device 114 may provide an acoustic and / or haptic signal indicating that the wearable device 116 is in the target positioning area. Alternatively or additionally, the wearable device 116 may provide an acoustic and / or haptic signal indicating that the wearable device 116 is in the target positioning area.
