AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing transport systems in packaging machines and similar systems with multiple stations are inflexible, costly, and require complex reconfiguration for changes in work orders, and existing driverless transport vehicles are expensive, complex, and sensitive to contamination, making them unsuitable for efficient and adaptable operation.

Method used

A system using a drivable surface with a binary-coded or pseudo-random pattern for vehicles to determine position, utilizing camera units for image analysis to decode the pattern and achieve high redundancy and robustness against contamination, enabling precise vehicle positioning and orientation.

Benefits of technology

Enables flexible and efficient vehicle positioning with high accuracy and adaptability to changing work orders, reducing system complexity and cost by using a pattern-based surface detection method.

Abstract

The invention relates to a system (100) for determining a position of vehicles in a facility, in particular a packaging machine facility, comprising at least one vehicle (12), which is designed to move in the working environment, a vehicle-accessible ground surface (16), on which the at least one vehicle (12) moves, and at least one camera unit (12a), which is designed to capture at least the vehicle-accessible ground surface (16) in order to determine a position of the at least one vehicle (12) within the facility (10), wherein the vehicle-accessible ground surface (16) is provided on the upper side thereof with a pattern in the form of a two-dimensional binary-coded continuous code, which can be captured by the at least one camera unit, or wherein the vehicle-accessible ground surface is provided with a two-dimensional, periodic, pseudo-random pattern, and the at least one camera unit (12a) or a control unit operatively coupled to the at least one camera unit is designed to carry out a spectral analysis of the captured pattern. The invention also relates to a facility (10) comprising a system (100) of this type and to a method for determining a position of a vehicle (12) in a facility (10) of this type.
