A technique of imaging a retina includes acquiring a preliminary infrared (IR) image of the retina with a retinal camera system; determining an IR intensity of the preliminary IR image; determining a select power setting for a white light flash of the retinal camera system used to capture a subsequent color image of the retina after acquiring the preliminary IR image; and capturing the subsequent color image of the retina with the white light flash set to the select power setting. The determination of the select power setting is based on the IR intensity of the preliminary IR image and a correlation function that correlates IR intensities of IR images to red channel intensities in color retinal images.
