Description

DEVICE AND METHOD FOR TRANSMISSION OF A SUBSET OF SOUNDING REFERENCE SIGNALSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communication systems, particularly to the transmission of sounding reference signal (SRS) in wireless networks. More specifically, the disclosure focuses on the efficient allocation of frequency resources for SRS transmissions by user equipment (UE) to facilitate downlink (DL) channel estimation and scheduling at the base station.BACKGROUND

[0002] In modern wireless communication systems, such as 5G New Radio (NR) networks, Sounding Reference Signals (SRS) play a crucial role in Time Division Duplex (TDD) in enabling the next-generation NodeB (gNB) to estimate the uplink (UL) channel conditions of the UE. The SRS transmissions are critical for the gNB's efficient performance of downlink precoding and scheduling, as they provide essential information about the channel's frequency response.

[0003] However, one of the major challenges with SRS transmissions is the need to allocate orthogonal resources in both time and frequency domains for each UE, across the entire frequency band, and for multiple antenna ports. This requirement increases the periodicity of SRS transmissions, i.e., the time interval between two consecutive SRS transmissions for a given UE. If this periodicity is too large, the gNB may be forced to make scheduling decisions based on outdated channel information, leading to suboptimal performance.

[0004] In the current 3GPP standards (e.g., TS 38.211, clause 6.4.1.4) , the SRS framework defines how UEs are allocated time and frequency resources for SRS transmission. The gNB controls the allocation of these resources by specifying parameters such as nofSymbols (the number of time-domain symbols) and transmissionComb, which determines the density of pilots in the frequency domain. A key issue is the trade-off between frequency sampling granularity and power per resource element (RE) .

[0005] This trade-off arises because the power budget for SRS transmission is fixed for each UE, meaning that power must be evenly distributed across all REs used for the transmission. When a higher granularity (i.e., a denser frequency sampling) is selected, such as with a lower transmissionComb value (e.g., 2) , SRS pilots are transmitted more frequently across the frequency band. While this improves the gNB’s ability to estimate the channel with finer detail in the frequency domain, it reduces the amount of power available for each individual pilot. This results in lower signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) per RE, making the signal more susceptible to interference and noise.

[0006] Conversely, with a higher transmissionComb value (e.g., 4 or 8) , fewer pilots are transmitted, allowing more power to be allocated to each RE. This improves the SINR for each pilot, providing stronger signals, but at the expense of reduced frequency granularity, which limits the gNB's ability to accurately sample the channel’s frequency response.

[0007] Thus, the existing SRS framework forces a compromise: either a higher frequency resolution with weaker signals or stronger signals with lower frequency resolution. Finding a method that optimally balances this trade-off is crucial for improving the gNB's channel estimation accuracy and overall system performance.SUMMARY

[0008] In view of the above, this disclosure aims to introduce a solution that enables efficient transmission of SRS pilots, combining the high SINR of received signals achievable with higher transmit power and the superior channel estimation performance typically associated with low transmissionComb values (high frequency resolution) . An objective is to propose a method that ensures precise and accurate channel estimation, while maintaining high SINR across the frequency band. Another objective is to optimize the utilization of spectrum and reduce interference while maintaining high-quality communication links.

[0009] These and other objectives are achieved by the solution of the present disclosure as provided in the enclosed independent claims. Advantageous implementations are further defined in the dependent claims.

[0010] A first aspect of the disclosure provides a network node for a wireless communication system, the network node being configured to receive one or more SRSs transmitted by a user equipment, UE, on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band, wherein the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band.

[0011] This disclosure proposes a solution where the network node receives SRSs on a subset of sub-carriers instead of all available sub-carriers. This allows to reduce the overhead and resource utilization, leading to more efficient communication while still gathering sufficient channel information for downlink precoding.

[0012] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the network node is configured to receive an indication from the UE, wherein the indication is indicative of the selected one or more sub-carriers.

[0013] The indication allows the network node to precisely know which sub-carriers were used by the UE for transmitting SRS, aiding in more accurate channel estimation and better system performance.

[0014] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the network node is configured to provide configuration information to the UE, wherein the configuration information specifies the plurality of candidate sub-carriers.

[0015] By controlling which sub-carriers the UE can select from, the network node may optimize resource allocation and allow for more dynamic and efficient use of the spectrum.

[0016] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the configuration information comprises one or more of the following parameters:

[0017] - a first parameter indicating whether a transmission of SRS pilots on the subset of the candidate sub-carriers is enabled;

[0018] - a second parameter indicating a size of the frequency band; and

[0019] - a third parameter indicating a size of the subset of candidate sub-carriers.

[0020] Optionally, the configuration information includes specific parameters such as whether SRS subset transmission is enabled, the size of the frequency band, and the subset size. These parameters enable flexible network configurations, allowing the system to adapt to different scenarios and optimize performance based on available resources and UE capabilities.

[0021] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the network node is configured to determine a downlink precoder for the UE based on one or more measurements on the one or more SRSs, and transmit downlink data to the UE with the downlink precoder.

[0022] Notably, the SRSs are only transmitted on the subset of the candidate sub-carriers. By using SRS measurements from the specific sub-carriers selected by the UE, the network node can calculate a more precise downlink precoder, enhancing downlink performance and signal quality.

[0023] A second aspect of the disclosure provides a UE for a wireless communication system. The UE is configured to transmit one or more sounding reference signals, SRSs, on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band to a network node, wherein the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band, and the UE is configured to select the subset from the plurality of candidate sub-carriers.

[0024] In this aspect of the disclosure, the UE that transmits SRS on a subset of sub-carriers selected from a pool of candidate sub-carriers, is proposed. This disclosure provides flexibility in selecting the most representative sub-carriers, improving reception quality, reducing interference while still ensuring sufficient channel feedback for optimal downlink communication.

[0025] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the UE is configured to transmit an indication to the network node, wherein the indication is indicative of the one or more sub-carriers selected by the UE.

[0026] The UE’s ability to inform the network node about its sub-carrier selection helps synchronize uplink and downlink operations, improving overall system efficiency.

[0027] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the indication is included in uplink control information (UCI) .

[0028] For instance, the UCI carries the indication. Integrating this information into existing control channels ensures minimal overhead while providing the necessary data for the network to perform accurate downlink precoding.

[0029] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the UE is configured to receive configuration information from the network node, wherein the configuration information specifies the plurality of candidate SRSs.

[0030] By receiving the configuration from the network node, the UE can adapt its behavior to the network's requirements, enhancing coordination between the UE and the network and improving spectral efficiency.

[0031] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the configuration information comprises one or more of the following parameters:

[0032] - a first parameter indicating whether a transmission of SRS pilots on the subset of the candidate sub-carriers is enabled;

[0033] - a second parameter indicating a size of the frequency band; and

[0034] - a third parameter indicating a size of the subset of candidate sub-carriers.

[0035] These specific parameters give the network fine-grained control over how the UE transmits SRS, allowing for tailored configurations that optimize network performance under varying conditions.

[0036] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the UE is configured to select the one or more sub-carriers from the plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band based on the configuration information.

[0037] This ensures that the UE’s selection of sub-carriers is aligned with the network’s optimization strategy, balancing efficient use of resources with the need for accurate channel feedback

[0038] In an implementation form of the second aspect, the UE is configured to generate one or more SRS sequences based on the configuration information, and map the one or more SRS sequences to the one or more sub-carriers.

[0039] Efficient generation and mapping of SRS sequences ensures that the transmitted signals provide the necessary feedback to the network while minimizing interference and power consumption.

[0040] A third aspect of the disclosure provides a method performed by a network node for a wireless communication system, comprising: receiving one or more sounding reference signals, SRSs, transmitted by a user equipment, UE, on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band, wherein the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band.

[0041] Implementation forms of the method of the third aspect may correspond to the implementation forms of the first network node of the first aspect described above. The method of the third aspect and its implementation forms achieve the same advantages and effects as described above for the first network node of the first aspect and its implementation forms.

[0042] A fourth aspect of the disclosure provides a method performed by user equipment, UE, for a wireless communication system, comprising: transmitting one or more sounding reference signals, SRSs, on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band to a network node, wherein the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers, wherein the subset is selected by the UE from the plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band.

[0043] Implementation forms of the method of the fourth aspect may correspond to the implementation forms of the UE of the second aspect described above. The method of the fourth aspect and its implementation forms achieve the same advantages and effects as described above for the UE of the second aspect and its implementation forms.

[0044] A fifth aspect of the disclosure provides a computer program product comprising a program code for carrying out, when implemented on a processor, the method according to the third aspect and any implementation forms of the third aspect, or the fourth aspect and any implementation forms of the fourth aspect.

[0045] It has to be noted that all devices, elements, units and means described in the present application could be implemented in software or hardware elements or any kind of combination thereof. All steps which are performed by the various entities described in the present application as well as the functionalities described to be performed by the various entities are intended to mean that the respective entity is adapted to or configured to perform the respective steps and functionalities. Even if, in the following description of specific embodiments, a specific functionality or step to be performed by external entities is not reflected in the description of a specific detailed element of that entity which performs that specific step or functionality, it should be clear for a skilled person that these methods and functionalities can be implemented in respective software or hardware elements, or any kind of combination thereof.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0054] Illustrative embodiments of a network node, a UE and corresponding methods are described with reference to the figures. Although this description provides a detailed example of possible implementations, it should be noted that the details are intended to be exemplary and in no way limit the scope of the application.

[0055] Moreover, an embodiment or example may refer to other embodiments or examples. For example, any description including but not limited to terminology, element, process, explanation, and / or technical advantage mentioned in one embodiment / example is applicative to the other embodiments or examples.

[0056] FIG. 1 shows a network node 100 adapted for a wireless communication system according to an embodiment of the disclosure. The network node 100 is configured to receive one or more SRSs transmitted by a UE 200 one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band. In particular, the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band.

[0057] The network node 100 may comprise processing circuitry (not shown) configured to perform, conduct or initiate the various operations of the network node 100 described herein. The processing circuitry may comprise hardware and software. The hardware may comprise analog circuitry or digital circuitry, or both analog and digital circuitry. The digital circuitry may comprise components such as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) , field-programmable arrays (FPGAs) , digital signal processors (DSPs) , or multi-purpose processors. The network node 100 may further comprise memory circuitry, which stores one or more instruction (s) that can be executed by the processor or by the processing circuitry, in particular under the control of the software. For instance, the memory circuitry may comprise a non-transitory storage medium storing executable software code which, when executed by the processor or the processing circuitry, causes the various operations of the network node 100 to be performed. In one embodiment, the processing circuitry comprises one or more processors and a non-transitory memory connected to the one or more processors. The non-transitory memory may carry executable program code which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes network node 100 to perform, conduct or initiate the operations or methods described herein.

[0058] It may be understood that this network node forms part of the wireless communication infrastructure, such as a gNB in a 5G or beyond network, capable of supporting downlink and uplink communications.

[0059] In operation, the network node 100 receives SRS 101 from a subset of the sub-carriers suggested by the network node and selected by the UE 200. Optionally, this subset of sub-carriers is dynamically chosen by the UE 200 based on the network configuration, ensuring that channel estimates for downlink precoding are optimized with minimal overhead.

[0060] In one implementation, the network node 100 also receives an indication 102 (e.g., as shown in FIG. 5) from the UE 200 that identifies which sub-carriers were used for SRS transmission. This indication allows the network node 100 to interpret the received SRS accurately.

[0061] In a further implementation, the network node 100 may configure the UE 200 by specifying a set of candidate sub-carriers for SRS transmission, ensuring efficient resource allocation. The network node 100 may be configured to provide configuration information 103 (e.g., as shown in FIG. 5) to the UE 200, wherein the configuration information 103 specifies the plurality of candidate sub-carriers. By allowing the UE 200 to transmit on a subset of sub-carriers, the network node 100 reduces unnecessary overhead, optimizes channel feedback, and ensures more effective use of spectral resources.

[0062] Optionally, the configuration information 103 comprises one or more of the following parameters:

[0063] - a first parameter indicating whether a transmission of SRS pilots on the subset of the candidate sub-carriers is enabled;

[0064] - a second parameter indicating a size of the frequency band; and

[0065] - a third parameter indicating a size of the subset of candidate sub-carriers.

[0066] This disclosure proposes methods and systems for SRS transmission in a wireless communication system. More specifically, it proposes a novel mechanism for the selection of REs used for transmitting SRS by a UE, providing greater flexibility and improved channel estimation accuracy compared to conventional methods.

[0067] Traditionally, the gNB determines the exact REs on which each UE transmits SRS, and the UE transmits on those predefined REs. However, in the proposed approach, instead of specifying exact REs, the gNB suggests a set of candidate REs per frequency sub-band on which the UE may transmit SRS. The UE then autonomously selects a subset of these candidate REs during each SRS  transmission, leaving the remaining REs unused. This enables the UE to adjust the selection of REs based on its own transmission conditions and to optimize its resource utilization.

[0068] To ensure the gNB remains aware of the REs selected by the UE, the UE transmits feedback to notify the gNB of the selected REs out of the set of candidate REs. This feedback enables the gNB to perform accurate channel estimation and subsequent downlink (DL) precoder calculations.

[0069] An illustrative example of this improvement is shown in FIG. 2, which compares the baseline approach (left) with the proposed solution (right) . In the baseline, the UE transmits SRS on REs strictly determined by the gNB configuration, represented by black squares. In contrast, under the proposed method, the gNB provides the UE with a set of candidate REs, from which the UE selects a subset of REs for transmission within each frequency sub-band.

[0070] In an extreme and highly relevant case, the UE transmits on only one RE per sub-band, selecting the RE that best represents the effective channel matrix for that sub-band. The rationale behind this strategy is that each sub-band (typically spanning four resource blocks) has only one precoder, calculated based on an aggregated effective channel matrix. By concentrating transmit power into a single RE, the UE can enhance the accuracy of channel estimation, recovering the channel closest to the effective channel matrix with minimal noise.

[0071] This disclosure provides significant improvements in flexibility and precision for SRS transmission, enhancing overall system performance, particularly in scenarios where accurate channel estimation is critical for efficient downlink communication.

[0072] FIG. 3 illustrates a UE 200 according to an embodiment of this disclosure, which is responsible for transmitting SRS 101 on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band. Optionally, the UE 200 receives configuration information 103 (e.g., as shown in FIG. 5) from the network node 100 that specifies a set of candidate sub-carriers. From these candidates, the UE 200 may select a subset of sub-carriers, e.g., based on its channel state information (CSI) , and transmits SRS pilots on the selected sub-carriers.

[0073] The UE 200 may comprise processing circuitry (not shown) configured to perform, conduct or initiate the various operations of the UE 200 described herein. The processing circuitry may comprise hardware and software. The hardware may comprise analog circuitry or digital circuitry, or both analog and digital circuitry. The digital circuitry may comprise components such as ASICs, FPGAs, DSPs, or multi-purpose processors. The UE 200 may further comprise memory circuitry, which stores one or more instruction (s) that can be executed by the processor or by the processing circuitry, in particular under the control of the software. For instance, the memory circuitry may comprise a non-transitory storage medium storing executable software code which, when executed by the processor or the processing circuitry, causes the various operations of the UE 200 to be performed. In one embodiment, the processing circuitry comprises one or more processors and a non-transitory memory connected to the one or more processors. The non-transitory memory may carry executable program code which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the UE 200 to perform, conduct or initiate the operations or methods described herein.

[0074] The UE's ability to select sub-carriers dynamically reduces unnecessary resource usage, enhances SRS signal quality, and provides more accurate channel feedback to the network node 100, leading to better downlink communication performance.

[0075] This disclosure further describes an innovative approach to calculating DL precoders at the network node 100 (e.g., gNB) based on SRS transmitted by the UE 100. In conventional methods, as illustrated in FIG. 4, the gNB estimates the channel response from each sub-carrier (SC) on the basis of the received SRS and aggregates all channel matrices from individual SCs into a single effective channel matrix representing the entire sub-band. This aggregated channel matrix is then used to compute the DL precoder for the corresponding sub-band.

[0076] The proposed method modifies this procedure by allowing the UE 200 to select the sub-carriers that best represent the effective channel matrix for the entire sub-band, which enhances the accuracy of the channel estimation and the performance of the DL precoder. Instead of transmitting SRS across all candidate SCs, the UE 200 focuses its transmission power on the SC (s) that most closely resemble the effective channel matrix, resulting in a higher SINR for the received SRS pilots.

[0077] One important innovation lies in how the UE 200 selects the optimal SC (s) from the candidate set within each sub-band. Although the method can be generalized to select multiple SCs, one example discussed in this disclosure focuses on the case where only a single SC is selected per sub-band for SRS transmission. The process can be described as follows:

[0078] At the UE 200:

[0079] 1. The UE 200 first estimates the channel matrix for each SC, denoted as:

[0080] by using reference signals, such as CSI-RS.

[0081] 2. Next, the UE 200 computes the effective channel matrix Heff for the sub-band, which could be the average of the channel matrices over all SCs in the sub-band, i.e.,

[0082] (other metrics may also be used to compute the effective channel matrix) .

[0083] 3. The UE 200 then selects the SC within the candidate set whose channel matrix  is closest to the effective channel matrix Heff in terms of a chosen distance metric, such as the Frobenius norm. The optimal SC is determined as:

[0084] 4. The UE 200 then transmits the SRS pilot on the selected SC, denoted by k.

[0085] Once the UE 200 selects the optimal SC (s) for transmission, it transmits the SRS pilots on those SC (s) . Additionally, the UE 200 may send a message to the gNB, i.e., the network node 100, indicating the SC (s) it has chosen for transmission in each sub-band. This information is crucial for the gNB to perform accurate channel estimation and to calculate the DL precoder based on the subset of SCs selected by the UE 200.

[0086] This method of selecting SCs for SRS transmission enables the UE 200 to transmit on the SCs that best represent the effective channel conditions, leading to more precise channel estimation by the gNB and improved DL precoding performance. The flexibility of the selection process also allows for various implementations, making it adaptable to different system requirements.

[0087] The disclosure provides an efficient means of concentrating transmission power on the most representative SCs within a sub-band, thereby improving the accuracy of the received SRS and the overall system performance in terms of DL precoding, channel estimation, and communication reliability in advanced wireless networks.

[0088] FIG. 5 illustrates a procedure of the proposed method according to an embodiment of this disclosure, which consists of three key features:

[0089] Configuration of Candidate Sub-carrier (SC) Set

[0090] The network node 100, e.g., gNB, configures the UE 200 for SRS transmission by providing additional information related to the candidate SC set. This configuration allows the UE 200 to select a subset of SCs from which it will transmit SRS pilots. The following fields are included in the configuration, e.g., the configuration information 103 as shown in FIG. 5:

[0091] 1. txSrsSubset This field indicates whether the subset transmission of SRS is enabled or not.

[0092] 2. nrofRb This parameter indicates the size of the sub-band in terms of the number of resource blocks (RBs) .

[0093] 3. nrofTxSc This parameter specifies the size of the subset of transmit SCs from the candidate SC set in each sub-band.

[0094] This configuration enables the gNB to provide the UE 200 with the flexibility to transmit SRS on a selected subset of SCs rather than the entire SC set, allowing for better resource optimization and targeted channel estimation.

[0095] Generation and Mapping of SRS Sequences

[0096] Once the configuration is received, the UE 200 generates the SRS sequences and maps them onto the physical resources. The UE 200 selects the SCs for transmission based on the received configuration information 103 and the estimated channel matrices. This feature requires the following steps:

[0097] 1. SRS Sequence Calculation: The UE 200 calculates the SRS sequences for each antenna port. The sequences may be generated using well-known techniques, such as Zadoff-Chu sequences, Gold sequences, or DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) -based sequences. The exact formula to generate each complex symbol of the SRS sequence depends on the selected method.

[0098] 2. Sequence Length: The UE 200 determines the length of the SRS sequences based on the number of SCs over which the SRS will be transmitted.

[0099] 3. Channel Matrix Estimation: The UE 200 estimates the channel matrices for each SC based on reference signals, such as CSI-RS (Channel State Information Reference Signals) and DMRS (Demodulation Reference Signals) .

[0100] 4. Effective Channel Matrix Calculation: The UE 200 computes an effective channel matrix for each sub-band using the estimated channel matrices. This can be done by averaging the channel matrices over the SCs in the sub-band or using other suitable metrics.

[0101] 5. SC Selection: The UE 200 selects the SCs that are closest to the effective channel matrix using a predefined distance metric, such as the Frobenius norm. The UE 200 selects SCs that most closely match the effective channel matrix, forming the subset of transmit SCs.

[0102] 6. Mapping to Physical Resources: The UE 200 maps the generated SRS sequences onto the physical resources based on the selected SC set. The mapping follows a predefined formula that assigns each SRS sequence to the corresponding physical resource elements.

[0103] Transmission of SRS on Transmit SC Subset

[0104] After generating and mapping the SRS sequences, the UE 200 transmits the SRS pilots on the selected SCs within each sub-band. The transmission process involves the following steps:

[0105] 1. Transmit SC Set Communication: The UE 200 indicates to the gNB the set of SCs selected for SRS transmission in each sub-band. This transmit SC set consists of a list of SC indices from 1 to specifying the exact SCs on which SRS pilots will be transmitted.

[0106] 2. SRS Transmission: The UE 200 transmits SRS pilots on the selected SCs per sub-band. In total, the UE 200 communicates  sets of SCs, where mSRS, b is the number of RBs over which SRS pilots are transmitted. This enables efficient use of resources and focuses transmission power on the most relevant SCs for channel estimation.

[0107] The proposed method provides significant advantages by allowing the UE to optimize SRS transmission, improving the accuracy of the channel estimation at the gNB and enhancing overall system performance. The flexibility in selecting the subset of SCs and the ability to focus transmission power on key SCs lead to better spectral efficiency and improved reliability in downlink communication. This solution is particularly beneficial for 5G and beyond wireless networks where precise channel estimation is crucial for efficient communication.

[0108] Notably, the embodiments of the present disclosure are applicable to wireless communication systems, such as 5G and beyond, and aim to improve the flexibility and accuracy of SRS transmission. While the application draws on aspects of standards like the 3GPP Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture, including elements in TS 38.211 and TS 38.331, the embodiments are not limited to any specific standard and can be adapted to various implementations. The proposed innovations provide flexibility in the SRS configuration, generation, and transmission to enhance overall system performance.

[0109] According to an embodiment of this disclosure, the length of the SRS sequence

[0110] can be derived using a generalized approach, adaptable to various system configurations. The formula could be based on the following structure:

[0111] where:

[0112] ● msc, b represents the number of RBs occupied by the SRS sequence.

[0113] ● KTC is a transmission comb parameter.

[0114] ● and are the number of sub-carriers per RB and per sub-band, respectively.

[0115] ● denotes the number of RBs in the sub-band.

[0116] ● indicates the SRS transmission is over all SCs.

[0117] When the parameter related to the transmission on a subset of sub-carriers (txSrsSubset) is configured, i.e.  alternatively the UE 200 expects the length of the SRS sequence to be divisible by Maximum number of cyclic shifts This is necessary to guarantee that the SRS sequences for different ports of the same UE are orthogonal.

[0118] According to an embodiment of this disclosure, the SRS sequences can be generated using Zadoff-Chu sequences, for instance as indicated in TS 38.211 Clause 6.4.1.4.2.

[0119] It may be understood that the SRS sequence generation method is not restricted to a specific technique and may involve a range of sequence types, such as:

[0120] ● Zadoff-Chu sequences for low Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) .

[0121] ● Gold sequences for use in random access and other transmission modes.

[0122] ● DFT-based sequences, where sequences are derived from the columns of a DFT matrix.

[0123] For instance, in the case of DFT sequences, consider the DFT matrix F of dimensions the SRS sequence given by related to its value for a port pi, OFDM symbol l′, and entry could be generated as follows:

[0124] where ri (n) is the n-th element of the i-th column of the DFT matrix F given by:

[0125] This embodiment remains open to the use of various types of sequences and allows for flexibility in adapting different modulation techniques for different types of communication systems.

[0126] According to an embodiment of this disclosure, the gNB communicates the configuration parameters required for SRS transmission to the UE. These parameters may include:

[0127] ● SRS subset transmission: A Boolean or enumerated field indicating whether the UE should transmit on a subset of sub-carriers.

[0128] ● Number of resource blocks per sub-band: Specifies the sub-band size, adjustable to system needs.

[0129] ● Number of transmit sub-carriers: Specifies the size of the subset of sub-carriers on which the UE will transmit SRS.

[0130] The configuration parameters could be exchanged using a flexible encoding format, such as ASN. 1 or another suitable format.

[0131] An example of a potential encoding scheme might look like this:

[0132] This embodiment is adaptable, with the parameters configurable to accommodate different network requirements and flexible deployment scenarios, not limited to a strict adherence to any one standard or specification. For instance, the parameter nrofRb can take the values such as {1, 2, 4} , while nrofTxSc is an integer that can take values such as assuming

[0133] It is important to note that txSrsSubset is an optional field included in the SRS-ResourceSet IE, and when present, it is fixed to “true” . The information element (IE) srsSubset, which includes both nrofRb and nrofTxSc, is part of the SRS-Resource IE and is also optional, becoming relevant only when txSrsSubset is included. Both the SRS-ResourceSet and SRS-Resource IEs are part of the broader SRS-Config IE, as described in TS 38.331 Clause 6.3, ensuring flexibility in the configuration process.

[0134] According to a further embodiment of this disclosure, the mapping of SRS sequences to physical resources can be generalized to various types of systems and methods. One approach could be to map the sequences to specific sub-carriers based on a flexible formula, such as:

[0135] where:

[0136] ● represent the SC indexes selected by the UE for SRS transmission.

[0137] ● Nap is the number of antenna ports.

[0138] ● βSRS represents a scaling factor for the SRS transmission power.

[0139] This approach allows for adaptation to different system architectures, resource grid sizes, and sub-carrier configurations, making it applicable to various communication systems and deployment scenarios.

[0140] According to a further embodiment of this disclosure, the UE 200 can transmit the indexes of selected sub-carriers used for SRS transmission to the gNB using UCI or other signaling methods. This information can be embedded in a new or extended information element, potentially formatted as a sequence of integers indicating the selected SCs. For example: a new IE can be included in the PUCCH-Config IE as a sequence containing entries, each one with an integer in indicating the SC index of the corresponding SRS pilot.

[0141] This embodiment supports flexible signaling methods, allowing for various ways of communicating the sub-carrier indexes between the UE and gNB. It ensures compatibility with different signaling formats and systems without being tied to a specific implementation.

[0142] FIG. 6 shows a method 600 according to an embodiment of the disclosure. In a particular embodiment, the method 600 is performed by a network node 100 for a wireless communication system shown in FIG. 1 or one of FIG. 3 to FIG. 5. The method 600 comprises a step 601 of receiving 601 one or more SRSs 101 transmitted by a UE 200, on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band, wherein the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band. Possibly, the UE 200 are the UE shown in FIG. 1, or one of FIG. 3 to FIG. 5.

[0143] FIG. 7 shows a method 700 according to an embodiment of the disclosure. In a particular embodiment, the method 700 is performed by the UE 200 for a wireless communication system shown in FIG. 1 or one of FIG. 3 to FIG. 5. The method 700 comprises a step 701 of transmitting one or more SRSs 101, on one or more sub-carriers within a frequency band to a network node 100, wherein the one or more sub-carriers are a subset of a plurality of candidate sub-carriers, wherein the subset is selected by the UE 200 from the plurality of candidate sub-carriers within the frequency band. Possibly, the network node 100 is the network node for a wireless communication system shown in FIG. 1 or one of FIG. 3 to FIG. 5.

[0144] The proposed methods allow for better resource utilization, greater control by the UE in adapting its transmission strategy, and improved overall system performance in 5G and beyond wireless networks.

[0145] To summarize, the disclosure offers a highly flexible and efficient approach to SRS transmission, providing several key advantages. First, the configuration of the candidate SC set by the gNB allows for optimal resource allocation across UEs. By assigning SC sets orthogonally, the gNB can effectively prevent collisions between UEs during SRS transmissions, ensuring efficient use of the spectrum.

[0146] Second, the generation and mapping of SRS sequences by the UE based on local channel conditions enables each UE to select the sub-carriers that best represent the effective channel. This dynamic selection process ensures that SRS transmission focuses on the most relevant SCs, improving channel estimation accuracy.

[0147] Finally, by transmitting SRS on the selected SC subset, the gNB is able to gather precise information about the active sub-carriers. This results in accurate channel estimation due to the concentration of SRS power on fewer SCs, leading to lower noise and improved SINR.

[0148] Together, these features enhance the efficiency and accuracy of SRS transmission in wireless communication systems, providing significant improvements in network performance and resource management.

[0149] The present disclosure has been described in conjunction with various embodiments as examples as well as implementations. However, other variations can be understood and effected by those persons skilled in the art and practicing the claimed embodiments of the disclosure, from the studies of the drawings, this disclosure and the independent claims. In the claims as well as in the description the word “comprising” does not exclude other elements or steps and the indefinite article “a” or “an” does not exclude a plurality. A single element or other unit may fulfill the functions of several entities or items recited in the claims. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in the mutual different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used in an advantageous implementation.

[0150] Furthermore, any method according to embodiments of the disclosure may be implemented in a computer program, having code means, which when run by processing means causes the processing means to execute the steps of the method. The computer program is included in a computer-readable medium of a computer program product. The computer-readable medium may comprise essentially any memory, such as a ROM (Read-Only Memory) , a PROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory) , an EPROM (Erasable PROM) , a Flash memory, an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable PROM) , or a hard disk drive.

[0151] Moreover, it is realized by the skilled person that embodiments of the network node 100, or the UE 200, comprise the necessary communication capabilities in the form of e.g., functions, means, units, elements, etc., for performing the solution. Examples of other such means, units, elements, and functions are: processors, memory, buffers, control logic, encoders, decoders, rate matchers, de-rate matchers, mapping units, multipliers, decision units, selecting units, switches, interleavers, de-interleavers, modulators, demodulators, inputs, outputs, antennas, amplifiers, receiver units, transmitter units, DSPs, trellis-coded modulation (TCM) encoder, TCM decoder, power supply units, power feeders, communication interfaces, communication protocols, etc. which are suitably arranged together for performing the solution.

[0152] Especially, the processor (s) of the network node 100, or the UE 200 may comprise, e.g., one or more instances of a Central Processing Unit (CPU) , a processing unit, a processing circuit, a processor, an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) , a microprocessor, or other processing logic that may interpret and execute instructions. The expression “processor” may thus represent a processing circuitry comprising a plurality of processing circuits, such as, e.g., any, some or all of the ones mentioned above. The processing circuitry may further perform data processing functions for inputting, outputting, and processing of data comprising data buffering and device control functions, such as call processing control, user interface control, or the like.
