Abstract
Description
[0001] PANIC LOCK WITH HIGH FLEXIBILITY OF USE
[0002] DESCRIPTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a panic lock with high flexibility of use.
[0004] State-of-the-art panic locks are known, which provide a variety of functions depending on their use, in particular for doors of buildings intended for access by a defined group of people or for buildings open to the public, administrative buildings, schools, hotels, warehouses, offices.
[0005] Among the main functions there is, in particular, the possibility of disabling the external handle of the frame, and the possibility of operating both the bolt and the latch of the lock either with the key alone or with the internal handle of the frame.
[0006] Generally, depending on their intended functionality, panic locks are manufactured with all or almost all specially dedicated mechanical components.
[0007] The manufacturer, in order to produce a range of panic locks, is therefore forced to keep available an extremely high number of product codes, which obviously makes warehouse inventory management much more complex and has a non-negligible impact on the final cost.
[0008] The technical task addressed by the present invention is therefore to provide a panic lock capable of eliminating the technical drawbacks complained of in the prior art.
[0009] Within this technical task, one object of the invention is to provide a panic lock that can be implemented with different functions without modifying its basic construction.
[0010] The technical task, as well as these and other objects, are achieved according to the present invention by providing a panic lock for a frame, comprising a mechanism housed in a case provided at the front with a faceplate, said case comprising a box and a lateral closing cover of the box, said mechanism comprising: a bolt and a latch extractable from the faceplate of the case; supports for handle spindles, at least one spindle for the internal handle and a panic lever rotatable by said at least one spindle for the internal handle for retracting said bolt and said latch; a cylinder having a slot for inserting a key and a cam rotatable by said key; characterized in that said mechanism further comprises: a movement distributor comprising a rotatable block and a first vertically translating transmission rod positioned at the rear of the case, where the rotatable block has a first cam profile for receiving movement from the cam, a first cam profile for transmitting to the first vertically translating transmission rod the movement received by the first cam profile for receiving movement, a second cam profile for receiving movement from the cam, and a second cam profile for transmitting the movement received by the second cam profile for receiving movement; a first kinematic chain for retracting the bolt, actuatable by said first transmission rod; a second kinematic chain for retracting the latch, actuatable by said first transmission rod, wherein the second kinematic chain comprises a second vertically translating transmission rod along the faceplate and a rotatable rocker configured to actuate in opposite directions said first transmission rod and said second transmission rod; a vertically translating enabling lever of the support of the spindle for the external handle, where said enabling lever is actuatable by the second cam profile for transmitting movement.
[0011] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, said rotatable block includes a first lever and a second lever, said first lever having the first cam profile for receiving movement from the cam and the first cam profile for transmitting to the first transmission rod the movement received by the first cam profile for receiving movement, said second lever having the second cam profile for receiving movement from the cam and the second cam profile for transmitting the movement received by the second cam profile for receiving movement.
[0012] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, said first lever and said second lever are pivoted to the case so as to be rotatable around a horizontal axis orthogonal to the sides of the case.
[0013] Advantageously, a wall of said case has a through opening for access from outside the case to one end of said second transmission rod. Advantageously, the panic lock comprises, externally to the case, an electric actuator for said second transmission rod, operative on said end of said second transmission rod for retracting said bolt and said latch.
[0014] The electric actuator of said second transmission rod may also be supplied as a retrofit accessory for upgrading the panic lock.
[0015] Advantageously, a wall of said case has a through opening for access from outside the case to one end of said enabling lever of the support of the spindle for the external handle.
[0016] Advantageously, the panic lock comprises, externally to the case, an electric actuator for said enabling lever of the support of the spindle for the external handle, operative on said end of said enabling lever of the support of the spindle for the external handle for enabling said support of the spindle for the external handle.
[0017] The electric actuator of said enabling lever may also be supplied as a retrofit accessory for upgrading the panic lock.
[0018] In a preferred embodiment of the panic lock, said enabling lever interacts with a blocking lever supported in rotation by said panic lever between an engagement position with and a disengagement position from said handle spindle supports, where an elastic element is provided, interposed between the blocking lever and the panic lever, for the automatic restoration of the disengagement position of the blocking lever.
[0019] In a preferred embodiment of the panic lock, said first kinematic chain comprises a first rotatable transmission lever configured for an operational connection between the first transmission rod and the bolt.
[0020] In a preferred embodiment of the panic lock, said panic lever engages said first transmission lever for retracting the bolt.
[0021] In an embodiment of the panic lock in which the function of actuating the lock also from a spindle for the external handle is provided, the panic lock comprises a separation lamina, between the external handle spindle and the internal handle spindle, having elastic tabs preventing extraction from the support of the external handle spindle.
[0022] In an embodiment of the panic lock in which the function of disabling the external handle with the key extracted is provided, the panic lock comprises a limiter of the rotation stroke of the cam to prevent extraction of the key, said stroke limiter being formed by a removable rigid connection, for example a screw, arranged through a through-hole of a wall of the case.
[0023] In an embodiment of the panic lock, the internal side of the lock, also referred to as the panic side of the lock, is determined by the insertion of a removable rigid connection element, for example a screw, between the support of the spindle for the handle on the side identified as internal or panic side and said panic lever.
[0024] The distinction between the internal side and the external side of the lock therefore arises only when one of the two sides is determined by inserting the removable rigid connection element; at that point the side with the removable rigid connection element becomes the internal or panic side of the lock.
[0025] Other features of the present invention are furthermore defined in the subsequent claims.
[0026] Further features and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the description of preferred but not exclusive embodiments of the panic lock according to the invention, illustrated by way of example and without limitation in the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0054] Figures 17a and 17b show a detail of the lock highlighting the screw used for limiting the rotation of the cylinder cam.
[0055] With reference to the figures mentioned, a panic lock for a frame is shown comprising a case 5, 6 closed at the front by a faceplate 4.
[0056] The case 5, 6 has a substantially parallelepiped shape and is formed by a box 5 and a cover 6. The box 5 defines a first flat side 5a of the case 5, 6, a rear wall 5b of the case 5, 6, upper wall 5c and lower wall 5d of the case 5, 6, while the cover 6 defines a second flat side 6a of the case 5, 6 parallel to the first flat side 5a.
[0057] The case 5, 6 is receivable in a seat opening along the front edge of the frame and extending in an antero-posterior direction within the thickness of the frame (not shown).
[0058] The panic lock comprises a mechanism housed in the case 5, 6.
[0059] The mechanism comprises a bolt 1 and a latch 2 extractable from the faceplate 4 of the case 5, 6.
[0060] The mechanism further comprises a support 7a for the handle spindle on the cover side 6, a support 7b for the handle spindle on the box side 5, at least one spindle 29 for the internal handle, and a panic lever 8 rotatable by the internal handle spindle 29 through the supports 7a, 7b for retracting the bolt 1 and the latch 2.
[0061] The supports 7a, 7b for the handle spindles, the panic lever 8, and a lever 9 of the latch 2 are rotatably supported by the case 5, 6, against and by the elastic means (not shown), around a common horizontal axis 25 orthogonal to the sides 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6.
[0062] The support 7a or 7b for the handle spindle 29 on the side determined as internal or panic side is fixed to the panic lever 8, for example with a locking screw 26 inserted into aligned holes 7al or 7b 1, 8h of the support 7a or 7b for the handle spindle 29 identified as internal or panic, and of the panic lever 8.
[0063] The support 7a or 7b for the handle spindle 29 determined as external or non-panic side, on the other hand, for reasons that will be clarified below, is normally disengaged in rotation from the panic lever 8 but may be made rotatably integral therewith.
[0064] The panic lever 8 has a surface 8d adapted to indirectly actuate the bolt 1, as will be seen more clearly later, and a surface 8e adapted to intercept the latch lever 9 and initiate a coupled rotation by which the latch lever 9 of the latch 2, with one of its ends 9a, can retract the latch 2.
[0065] The mechanism further comprises a cylinder (not shown in its entirety) arranged in a housing seat 32 present in the case 5, 6.
[0066] The cylinder comprises a stator body supporting a cylindrical rotor body having a slot for the insertion of a key necessary to rotate the rotor body of the cylinder about a horizontal axis orthogonal to the sides 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6.
[0067] The rotor body of the cylinder has a cam 24 that can rotate integrally with the rotor body for retracting the bolt 1 and the latch 2.
[0068] The bolt 1 is guided in translation in the horizontal antero-posterior direction of the case 5, 6 between an extracted position from the case 5, 6 through an opening on the faceplate 4 of the case 5, 6 and a retracted position in which it is fully withdrawn inside the case 5, 6. The latch 2 is likewise guided in translation in the horizontal antero-posterior direction of the case 5, 6 between an extracted position from the case 5, 6 through an opening on the faceplate 4 of the case 5, 6 and a retracted position in which it is fully withdrawn inside the case 5, 6.
[0069] The latch 2 is movable against and by the action of an elastic element 22, in the illustrated case a torsion spring.
[0070] The mechanism further comprises a movement distributor actuatable by the key and comprising a rotatable block 11, 12 and a first vertically translating transmission rod 15 positioned at the rear of the case 5, 6.
[0071] The rotatable block 11, 12 has a first cam profile 1 la for receiving movement from the cam 24, a first cam profile 1 lb for transmitting to the first transmission rod 15 the movement taken from the first cam profile 1 la for receiving movement, a second cam profile 1 le for receiving movement from the cam 24, and a second cam profile I lf for transmitting the movement taken from the second cam profile 1 le for receiving movement.
[0072] More precisely, the rotatable block 11, 12 includes a first lever 11 and a second lever 12.
[0073] The first lever 11 has the first cam profile 11a for receiving movement from the cam 24 and the first cam profile 1 lb for transmitting to the first transmission rod 15 the movement taken from the first cam profile 1 la for receiving movement.
[0074] The second lever 12 has the second cam profile 1 le for receiving movement from the cam 24 and the second cam profile 1 If for transmitting the movement taken from the second cam profile l ie for receiving movement.
[0075] The first lever 11, for example arranged on the cover side, and the second lever 12, for example arranged on the box side, are pivoted to the case 5, 6 rotatably about a horizontal axis 18 orthogonal to the sides 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6.
[0076] In particular, the first cam profile 11b for transmitting movement engages a reference pin 15b supported by the first transmission rod 15. The mechanism further comprises a first kinematic chain for retracting the bolt 1, actuatable by the first transmission rod 15, and a second kinematic chain for retracting the latch 2, likewise actuatable by the first transmission rod 15.
[0077] The first kinematic chain comprises a first rotatable transmission lever 17 configured for an operational connection between the first transmission rod 15 and the bolt 1.
[0078] The first transmission lever 17 is rotatable about a horizontal rotation axis 23 orthogonal to the sides 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6.
[0079] In particular, the bolt 1 has an inclined slot la in which a driving pin 17b supported by a first arm of the first transmission lever 17 is slidably engaged, while a second arm of the first transmission lever 17 has a slot 17a operatively engaged by a reference pin 15a supported by the first transmission rod 15.
[0080] The first transmission lever 17 also has a surface 17c which is operatively engaged by surface 8d of the panic lever 8 for retracting the bolt 1.
[0081] The second kinematic chain comprises a second vertically translating transmission rod 13 along the faceplate 4 and a rocker 14 rotatable so as to actuate in opposite translation directions the first transmission rod 15 and the second transmission rod 13.
[0082] The rocker 14 is pivoted to the case 5, 6 rotatably about a rotation axis 19 parallel to the rotation axis 18 of the block 11, 12.
[0083] In particular, a first arm of the rocker 14 has a slot in which a reference pin 13a supported by the second transmission rod 13 is slidably engaged, while a second arm of the rocker 14 has a slot 14a operatively engaged by a reference pin 15c supported by the first transmission rod 15.
[0084] The second kinematic chain further comprises a second transmission lever 20 operatively connecting the second transmission rod 13 to the latch 2.
[0085] The second transmission lever 20 is pivoted to the case 5, 6 rotatably about a horizontal axis 21 orthogonal to the sides 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6. The second transmission lever 20 has a first lever arm 20a operatively engaged with a reference pin 13b supported by the second transmission rod 13 and a second lever arm 20b operatively engaged with a wall 2a of the latch 2.
[0086] A dedicated elastic element 16, formed for example by a vertical helical spring, is operative on the first transmission rod 15 for the automatic restoration of the bolt 1 and the latch 2 into the extracted position from the faceplate 4 of the case 5, 6.
[0087] The mechanism further comprises a vertically translating enabling lever 10 for enabling the support 7b or 7a of the spindle 29 of the handle determined as non-panic side.
[0088] The enabling lever 10 of the support 7b or 7a of the spindle 29 of the handle determined as nonpanic is actuatable by the second cam transmission profile I lf operatively engaged with a surface 10a of the enabling lever 10.
[0089] The enabling lever 10 is adapted to interact with a blocking lever 8b pivoted on the panic lever 8 about a rotation axis 8f between an engagement position with and a disengagement position from the handle spindle support 7a. At the same time, the blocking lever 8b is integral with lever 8c. The rotation axis 8f of the blocking lever 8b is parallel to the rotation axis 25 of the handle spindle supports 7a and 7b, of the panic lever 8, and of the latch lever 9 of the latch 2.
[0090] In the engagement position, the blocking lever 8c engages its reference surface 8c 1 with the reference surface 7b2 of the support 7b for the handle spindle 29, making the panic lever 8 and the support 7b for the handle spindle 29 integral in rotation, while in the disengagement position the reference surface 8c 1 of the blocking lever 8b disengages the reference surface 7b2 of the support 7b for the handle spindle 29, with the result that the rotation of the support 7b for the handle spindle 29 cannot be transmitted to the panic lever 8.
[0091] A dedicated elastic element 8g, interposed between the blocking levers 8c, 8b and the panic lever 8, is provided for the automatic restoration of the disengagement position of the blocking lever 8c, 8b. More precisely, two blocking levers 8b, 8c, mutually fixed, are provided and positioned symmetrically on opposite sides of the panic lever 8.
[0092] The functions of the lock can be updated with dedicated measures.
[0093] If it is desired to mount two independent handle spindles, i.e., a spindle 29 for the internal handle and a spindle 29 for the external handle, an accessory is provided formed by a separation lamina 28 between the external handle spindle 29 and the internal handle spindle 29.
[0094] The separation lamina 28 is insertable through the support for the handle spindle 29 and has elastic tabs 28 preventing extraction from the support for the handle spindle 29.
[0095] In practice, the separation lamina 28 has a flat body 28c of shape and size corresponding to the cross-section of the handle spindles.
[0096] From the flat body 28c extend coplanar projections 28b engageable in corresponding axial grooves 7b4 of the inner walls of the support 7b of the handle spindle 29 that define the housing 7b5 of the handle spindle 29.
[0097] These projections 28b act as end stops for the insertion of the separation lamina 28 when intercepted by the head of the support 7a of the handle spindle.
[0098] The elastic tabs 28 extend with an inclination from the flat body 28c to engage corresponding stops 7b3 provided on the walls of the support 7b for the handle spindle 29 defining the housing 7b5 of the handle spindle 29.
[0099] If it is desired to have the external handle always disabled when the key is removed, an accessory limiter of the rotation stroke of the cam 24 is provided to prevent key extraction.
[0100] The stroke limiter is formed by a screw 30 arranged through a through-hole 30a of a wall of the case 5, 6, in particular a side wall 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6.
[0101] The screw 30 extends orthogonally to the sides 5a, 6a of the case 5, 6 so as to intercept the cam 24 of the cylinder and thus block its rotation. Advantageously, in the lock, a wall of the case 5, 6, for example the lower wall 5d, has a through- opening 34 for access from outside the case 5, 6 to an end 13c of the second transmission rod 13. Advantageously, the lock may thus be associated, externally to the case 5, 6, with an electric actuator 36 of the second transmission rod 13, operative on the end 13c of the second transmission rod 13 for retracting the bolt 1 and the latch 2.
[0102] The electric actuator 36 of the second transmission rod 13 is thus a linear actuator having a vertically translating output shaft 36a engaged with the end 13c of the second transmission rod 13. The electric actuator 36 of the second transmission rod 13 is positioned below the case 5, 6.
[0103] Advantageously, moreover, a wall of the case 5, 6, again for example the lower wall 5d, has a through-opening 37 for access from outside the case 5, 6 to an end 10b of the enabling lever 10 of the handle spindle supports 7b and 7a.
[0104] Advantageously, the lock may thus be associated, externally to the case 5, 6, with an electric actuator 35 of the enabling lever 10, operative on the end 10c of the enabling lever 10 for enabling the handle spindle supports 7b and 7a.
[0105] The electric actuator 35 of the enabling lever 10 is thus a linear actuator having a vertically translating output shaft (not shown) engaged with the end 10c of the enabling lever 10.
[0106] The electric actuator 35 of the enabling lever 10 is positioned below the case 5, 6.
[0107] The operation of the lock is as follows.
[0108] The function of retracting the bolt 1 and the latch 2 with the key is performed as follows.
[0109] The cam 24 rotates the block 11, 12 which, with the first cam profile 11b, engages the reference pin 15b, raising the first transmission rod 15 which, through the reference pin 15a engaged in the slot 17a, rotates the first transmission lever 17. The driving pin 17b slides in the slot la, retracting the bolt 1.
[0110] At the same time, the rotating block 11, 12, through the reference pin 15c, rotates the rocker 14 which, by engaging the reference pin 13a, lowers the second transmission rod 13. The reference pin 13b, integral with the second transmission rod 13, rotates the second transmission lever 20 which engages the wall 2a of the latch 2 and, overcoming the resistance of the spring 22, retracts the latch 2.
[0111] The function of retracting the bolt 1 and the latch 2 with the electric actuator 36 is performed as follows.
[0112] The electric actuator 36 pulls the second transmission rod 13 downward, the rocker 14 rotates and raises the first transmission rod 15, overcoming the resistance of the elastic element 16. The first transmission rod rotates the first transmission lever 17, which retracts the bolt 1. At the same time, the second transmission rod 13 rotates the second transmission lever 20 which, engaging the wall 2a of the latch 2 and overcoming the resistance of the spring 22, retracts the latch 2.
[0113] The function of retracting the bolt 1 and the latch 2 with the panic lever 8 is performed as follows. The panic lever 8, by rotating, rotates the first transmission lever 17 due to the interaction between surfaces 8d and 17c. The driving pin 17b, sliding in the slot la, retracts the bolt 1. Furthermore, the rotating panic lever 8 intercepts the latch lever 9, causing it to rotate. As a result of the rotation, the latch lever 9, through its end 9a, retracts the latch 2.
[0114] The function of enabling the handle spindle support 7b is performed as follows.
[0115] The enabling lever 10 is raised, which in turn raises the blocking levers 8b, 8c, overcoming the resistance of the elastic element 8g, until engagement occurs between reference surfaces 7a2 and 8b 1 on one side, and between reference surfaces 7b2 and 8c 1 on the other side, so that the panic lever 8 can be actuated through both supports 7a and 7b for the handle spindles 29.
[0116] The enabling lever 10 can be actuated via the cam 24, which rotates the block 11, 12 engaging the second cam profile 1 le for receiving movement. The rotation of the block 11, 12 causes the cam profile 1 If for transmitting movement to engage the surface 10a of the enabling lever 10, thereby raising the enabling lever 10. Alternatively, the enabling lever 10 can be actuated via the electric actuator 35, which operates on the end 10b of the enabling lever 10.
[0117] It should be noted that in the block 11, 12 the first lever 11 and the second lever 12 may move together for a portion of rotation, or one of the two levers 11, 12 may move while the other of the two levers 11, 12 remains stationary.
[0118] If the second lever 12 is actuated via the second cam profile l ie, the first lever 11 and the second lever 12 rotate together, and movement is transmitted via the second cam profile I lf of the first lever 11 to the surface 10a of the enabling lever 10.
[0119] If the first lever 11 is actuated via the first cam profile 1 la for receiving movement, the first lever 11 rotates alone, transmitting movement via the cam profile 1 lb to the reference pin 15b of the first transmission rod 15.
[0120] The panic lock can perform various commercially known functions.
[0121] The function commercially known as “Function E” provides that actuating the lock either with the key or with the handle retracts both the bolt and the latch. On the external side, no handle is present. The function commercially known as “Function B” provides that actuating the lock with a key rotation enables or disables the external handle.
[0122] Advantageously, “Function B” also includes the possibility of performing an additional key rotation to retract the bolt and the latch. Enabling the external handle is obtained with a full key turn. The key can then be extracted from the cylinder after enabling the external handle spindle support.
[0123] The function commercially known as “Function C” provides that actuating the lock with a key rotation enables or disables the external handle. This enabling is obtained with a partial key turn. The key therefore cannot be extracted from the cylinder when the external handle spindle support is enabled. The accessory 28, which serves as a separation element between the handle spindles, allows easy switching from “Function E” to “Function B” and “Function C,” and vice versa.
[0124] The cam 24, after enabling the external handle spindle support via the enabling lever 10, can continue its rotation until reaching the position that allows extraction of the key. This first application is commercially referred to as “Function B.”
[0125] The architecture of the lock allows preventing key extraction by limiting the rotation of the cam 24 through the insertion of the accessory 30, which acts as a rotation stroke limiter of the cam 24. This second application is commercially referred to as “Function C.”
[0126] The accessory 30, acting as a rotation stroke limiter of the cam 24, thus allows easy switching from “Function B” to “Function C” and vice versa.
[0127] The panic lock thus conceived is susceptible to numerous modifications and variants, all within the scope of the inventive concept; furthermore, all details may be replaced with technically equivalent elements.
[0128] In practice, the materials used, as well as the dimensions, may be of any type according to requirements and the state of the art.
