[0009] Detailed Description
[0010] Automotive trim is typically made from uncoated plastics and / or rubbers, such as vinyl, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), polycarbonate or synthetic rubber materials. They typically experience UV irradiation and / or weathering elements like the paint and clear-coated parts of the vehicle. However, these trim elements are typically not clear- coated or protected with any type of surface coating. As a result, trim weathering, oxidation and premature trim failing and visual discoloration is an issue for automotive owners.
[0011] There are several types of trim restoration products available. One type of trim restoration products is lotion-based. These lotion-based formulations are typically composed of an oil emulsion, with the main active components being silicone or mineral oils of various molecular weights. These provide a quick, user-friendly solution to darken and provide visual improvement for the trim. While these types of products provide a quick and very easy-to-use experience for the consumer, they generally provide shortlived coatings and require constant reapplication to maintain an improved appearance.
[0012] Another type of trim restoration product is aerosol-based. Generally, these products tend to be solvent-based and have either a polymer or formula that can cure over time on the trim. These formulas are similar to an acrylic clear-coat spray, where they have an acrylic resin dissolved in an appropriate solvent dispensed via aerosol trigger. While these coatings tend to be more robust and last for longer time periods, there are also issues with these aerosol trim restoration products. One issue in particular is that these products are significantly less user-friendly. Use of these products requires both careful and diligent preparation work such as masking off areas where the consumer does not want overspray, careful sanding off oxidation and / or polishing and cleaning the trim areas and a skilled user to properly spray an even layer of product on the trim pieces. Generally, most manufacturers have specific instructions indicating the spray distance, spray pass direction, and also overlapping requirements. In addition, due to the nature of these formulas, misapplication or mistake areas cannot be easily undone without significant effort.
[0013] Therefore, a need remains for a trim restoration product that is easy to apply and also produces coatings with good durability. In this disclosure, trim restoration solutions are provided that can be applied like a lotion but because it is a solution not an emulsion, and it does not require the preparation or skill required of an aerosol coating. Additionally, the trim restoration solution is self-levelling, meaning that it gives an even coating. This allows the user to apply the trim restoration solution where desired and allow the coating to self-level and dry to form the coating. Also disclosed are treatment restoration kits and methods for treating trim articles.
[0014] The term “(meth)acrylate” refers to monomeric acrylic or methacrylic esters of alcohols. Acrylate and methacrylate monomers or oligomers are referred to collectively herein as "(meth)acrylates”.
