Abstract
Description
[0001] STABLE SYNERGISTIC PESTICIDAL COMPOSITION COMPRISING TOLFENPYRAD, ETHION, AND PYRIPROXYFEN
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a stable synergistic pesticidal composition comprising A) a compound of Formula I, i.e., 4-chloro-3-ethyl-l-methyl-N-[[4-(4-methylphenoxy)phenyl]methyl]-lH-pyrazole-5-carboxamide or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; B) a compound of Formula II, i.e., S, S’ -methylene bis(O,O-diethyl phosphorodithioate) or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; and C) a compound of Formula III, i.e., 2-[ 1-methyl-2-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)ethoxy]pyridine or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters or its derivatives for effective control of various pests including insects-pests and wide range of diseases caused by such pests. The present invention also relates to a process for preparation of such pesticidal composition for synergistic and efficacious control of various pests including insects-pests and diseases caused by such pests.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Traditional pesticidal formulations have been progressively developed to enhance various desirable attributes such as crop yield and quality, ease of storage and handling, application efficiency, user and environmental safety, and overall profitability. Insect pest management in modern agriculture faces an escalating crisis of resistance, ineffective control, and crop safety challenges. Although numerous insecticides are commercially available, their continuous and repetitive application has selected resistant strains, for instance but not limited to whiteflies, thrips, bollworms, aphids, etc. which are capable of surviving conventional pesticides.
[0006] Furthermore, existing pesticidal compositions often adversely affect non-target organisms and the environment, leading to issues such as phytotoxicity, leaf discoloration, and other plant injuries. These challenges disrupt normal physiological and biochemical processes in plants, resulting in reduced growth, lower resistance to environmental stress, and overall decline in crop health and productivity.
[0007] Various prior arts in pesticidal compositions are tailored based on the active ingredients are used along with their intended applications. However, existing pesticidal combinations shows adverse effect on plants and crops such as discoloration of plant leaves, resistance against sucking pests complex and are ineffective against control of all stages of sucking pests complex including but not limited to thrips, white fly, aphids, jassids, moths; cotton bollworms, scale, leaf folder, and other persistent pests.
[0008] In this backdrop, references can be made to CN1272314A, which relates to a insecticidal pesticide mixed solution for controlling pests with pyrethroid and Compound of Formula II as active ingredients.
[0009] Further references can be made to CN 103238604A, which relates to a binary insecticidal composition containing Compound of Formula III and Compound of Formula I and is mainly characterized by comprising active components of Compound of Formula III and Compound of Formula I and the balance being an auxiliary agent.
[0010] Traditional strategies to overcome resistance have focused on alternating or mixing insecticides / pesticides belonging to similar or different chemical classes. However, such combinations have not always yielded synergistic benefits — in many cases, the modes of action either overlap or interfere metabolically, resulting in chemical antagonism, formulation instability, or phytotoxicity.
[0011] Hence, developing a multi-active pesticidal composition that achieves true synergy, rather than mere additive effects, remains a continuing technical challenge.
[0012] Thus, there is a need to overcome these challenges mentioned herein above. In view of the same, the present objectives to develop a stable synergistic pesticidal composition having an enhanced efficacy, reduce the likelihood of resistance development, reduce toxicity, increase residual activity, reduced dosages, offers broader crop protection, improved and healthy foliage, improved crop yield, saves labour, mitigate environmental impact and economical and is yet cost effective to the end user.
[0013] The stable synergistic pesticidal composition of the present invention will thereby targets multiple biological pathways in pest, thereby increasing mortality rates and reduces the probability of resistance and where three actives in the ternary composition are mutually compatible and also resulting in stable composition also. Therefore, the aim of the present invention is to provide a stable synergistic pesticidal composition that addresses these needs by providing a novel ternary composition that combines multiple active ingredients and that too in specific weight percentage ranges. Composition of present invention has demonstrated superior efficacy in controlling a broad spectrum of pests including sucking pest complexes, and other pests such as moths, hoppers, bollworms, scales while being environmentally sustainable.
[0014] A compound of Formula I chemically known as 4-chloro-3-ethyl-l-methyl-N-[[4-(4-methylphenoxy)phenyl]methyl]-lH-pyrazole-5-carboxamide, is broad-spectrum pyrazole and carboxamide insecticide and pyrazole-carboxamide fungicide with contact activity exhibiting antifeedant activity especially against Lepidoptera. It is a mitochondrial complex I electron transport inhibitor. It is used for the controlling pests including but not limited to aphids; leaf hoppers; scale; thrips; whitefly; potato psyllid; Colorado beetle in various vegetables including but not limited to cruciferous leafy varieties, cabbage, Okra, Cumin, Chilli, Mango, Onion,, Pomegranate; Tea; Fruit; Indoor ornamentals except cut flowers, cotton, and other crops, etc.
[0015] Further, a compound of Formula II, i.e., S, S’ -methylene bis(O,O-diethyl phosphorodithioate) is a non-systemic with a predominate contact action. It is an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. It is a pesticide used for the controlling pests including but not limited to mites such as Red spidermite (Tetranychus urticae) purple mit4es, yellowmite, thrips, whitefly, pod borer, Girdle bettie, stemfly; Planthoppers; Aphids; Scale insects; Bollworms, American Bollworm, Codling moth on a wide variety of Fruit including but not limited to apples, pears, citrus; Onions; Cotton; Cereals, Chilli, Rice, tea, gram, pea, Soybean, Pigeon pea or regdram, etc.
[0016] Moreover, a compound of Formula III chemically known as 2-[l-methyl-2-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)ethoxy]pyridine, is an insecticide which pertains to a juvenile hormone mimic and it mimics the natural hormone that regulates development and reproduction in insects. By binding to the Met receptor, it disrupts normal hormonal signalling, leading to impaired metamorphosis, sterilization, and inhibition of egg development. It is used to control various pests including but not limited to whitefly, jassids, aphids, thrips, fruit and shoot borer, bollworms, etc. on a wide variety of crops including but not limited to Brinjal, Cotton, Chilli, Okra, Soybean , Green gram, some ornamentals, etc.
[0017] Through extensive research, it was surprisingly found that a specific pesticidal composition comprising Compound of Formula I, Compound of Formula II, and Compound of Formula III, in specific weight percentage range, exhibits unexpected synergistic interaction against a broad spectrum of insect pests, including but not limited to the sucking pest complex whiteflies, thrips, aphids, and mites and bollworms, etc.
[0018] Each of these actives represents a distinct biochemical mechanism, yet their combined physiological targeting produces a complementary and sequential action on insect life stages, which no single or binary combination composition could achieve.
[0019] 1. Compound of Formula I — a pyrazole -carboxamide derivative — acts as a mitochondrial complex I electron transport inhibitor, shutting down cellular respiration in pest tissues. It primarily affects feeding stages, resulting in rapid starvation and mortality.
[0020] 2. Compound of Formula II, an organophosphate compound, inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), thereby disrupting neural signaling. It ensures quick knockdown and paralysis, complementing the slower but fatal metabolic disruption caused by Compound of Formula I.
[0021] 3. Compound of Formula III, a juvenile hormone analog (JHA), acts on reproductive and developmental pathways, preventing larval molting and adult emergence, thus halting population resurgence after initial control.
[0022] It was observed that when these aforementioned actives are combined in precise and specific weight percentage range, they exhibit non-linear synergistic effects — meaning that the combined efficacy far exceeds the expected sum of individual or binary combination compositions. This synergy likely arises from their distinct pharmacodynamic timing and tissue localization within the pest body: Compound of Formula Il’s fast neurotoxic knockdown exposes pests to residual Compound of Formula I respiration inhibition, while Compound of Formula III blocks any survivors from reproducing.
[0023] Furthermore, unlike conventional combinations of pesticides having overlapping target sites, the present composition ensures multi-site pest control with minimal cross-resistance. The presence of a growth regulator (Compound of Formula III) in combination with a mitochondrial inhibitor (Compound of Formula I) and a neurotoxic inhibitor (Compound of Formula II) creates a tripartite biological blockade, rendering pests incapable of metabolic compensation or adaptation. In view of the drawbacks associated with the prior arts, there exists a need to provide a stable synergistic pesticidal composition for synergistic and effective control of insect pests including sucking pests’ complex.
[0024] The present invention satisfies the existing needs, as well as others, and generally overcomes the deficiencies found in the prior art. The present invention composition is synergistic, efficacious, environmentally friendly, simple to formulate, stable and is safe to use.
[0025] Thus, the pesticidal composition of the present invention aims to overcome the problems of the prior art and provides a stable synergistic pesticidal composition comprising bioactive amounts of comprising A) a compound of Formula I, i.e., 4-chloro-3-ethyl-l-methyl-N-[[4-(4-methylphenoxy)phenyl]methyl]-lH-pyrazole-5-carboxamide or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; B) a compound of Formula II, i.e., S, S’ -methylene bis(O,O-diethyl phosphorodithioate) or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; and C) a compound of Formula III, i.e., 2-[l-methyl-2-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)ethoxy]pyridine or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters or its derivatives for effective control of various pests including insects-pests and wide range of diseases caused by such pests.
[0026] Therefore, the invention provides a novel, inventive and industrially applicable ternary pesticidal composition that overcomes the long-standing limitations of prior art formulations, compositions by combining actives that are not only mechanistically distinct but also mutually reinforcing in biological effect and formulation stability.
[0027] The resulting composition of present invention delivers comprehensive, durable, and cost-effective pest management, demonstrating that the synergistic composition comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III represents a non-obvious and synergistic advancement over existing pesticidal technologies.

[0219] In one of the embodiments of the present invention, suitable carriers include liquid and solid carriers. Liquid carriers include e.g. non-aqueous solvents such as cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. paraffins, tetrahydronaphthalene, alkylated naphthalenes and their derivatives, alkylated benzenes and their derivatives, alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol and cyclohexanol, ketones such as cyclohexanone, strongly polar solvents, e.g. amines such as N-methylpyrrolidone, and water as well as mixtures thereof. Solid carriers include e.g. mineral earths such as silicas, silica gels, silicates, talc, kaolin, limestone, lime, chalk, bole, loess, clay, dolomite, diatomaceous earth, calcium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, magnesium oxide, ground synthetic materials, fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium nitrate, ureas, and / or other solid carriers. In one embodiment, additives such as Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer or Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer super-wetter is an organosilicone based powder adjuvant that can enhance the water absorption efficiency of hard-to-wet soils by increasing their water infiltration, drainage, water retention and hydrophilicity; tallow amine ethoxylate increases the biocompatibility in environmental applications and help in the interactions of active ingredients; ammonium sulphate help is resistant to leaching and helps the crop to utilize nitrogen efficiently; urea clathrate provides superior wetting and spray retention properties and serves as an excellent nitrogen source for crops and epoxide soybean oil provides increased active ingredient uptake and improved rain fastness to the composition; and epoxide soybean oil provides increased active ingredient uptake and improved rain fastness to the composition. The said additives are stable and hygroscopic resulting in an efficient uptake and functioning.
[0220] In one embodiment of the present invention, Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer has superspreading ability, it significantly lowers the surface tension of spray solutions, allowing them to spread uniformly across plant surfaces, including waxy or hard-to-wet leaves. This enhances the penetration and absorption of pesticides, leading to improved efficacy. Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer is especially effective in low-volume spray applications and helps increase rainfastness and reduce runoff. Its use supports more efficient pesticide delivery, often allowing for reduced application rates.
[0221] In one embodiment of the present invention, the inclusion of both Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer super-wetter and tallow amine ethoxylate in a formulation significantly enhances its surface activity and delivery efficiency. Siloxane Poly alkyleneoxide Copolymer, a trisiloxane -based super-spreader, dramatically reduces surface tension, enabling rapid and uniform spreading of the solution across plant surfaces, even on waxy or water-repellent leaves. In synergy, tallow amine ethoxylate, a non-ionic surfactant, acts as a powerful wetting and penetration agent, improving the absorption of active ingredients into plant tissues. This combination ensures maximum bioavailability and performance of pesticidal actives.
[0222] In one embodiment of the present invention, ammonium sulphate particularly as a water conditioner and adjuvant. It helps improve the efficacy of pesticides, by binding with hard water cations such as calcium and magnesium that would otherwise reduce pesticide absorption and activity. By preventing these ions from interacting with the active ingredient, ammonium sulphate enhances uptake into plant tissues. It may also act as a nitrogen source, supporting plant growth.
[0223] In one embodiment of the present invention, Epoxide soybean oil, a bio-based plasticizer and solvent, improves formulation compatibility, reduces phytotoxicity, and enhances the dispersion of active compounds. Derived from renewable sources, both additives support sustainable agriculture by offering low toxicity, biodegradability, and improved formulation efficiency without compromising efficacy.
[0224] In one embodiment of the present invention, Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer, tallow amine ethoxylate, ammonium sulphate, and epoxide soybean oil are additives used individually or in combination to enhance the performance of pesticidal formulations. Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer, a superspreading organosilicone surfactant, reduces surface tension and improves leaf coverage and penetration of active ingredients. Tallow amine ethoxylates, as non-ionic surfactants, aid in emulsification and enhance pesticide uptake. Ammonium sulphate serves as a water conditioner, preventing hard water ions from reducing pesticide efficacy, while also acting as a nitrogen source. Epoxide soybean oil, a biodegradable solvent and plasticizer, improves formulation stability, compatibility, and reduces phytotoxicity. Used alone or synergistically, these additives optimize spray performance, improve bioavailability of actives, and support sustainable and effective crop protection.
[0225] In one embodiment, additives such as urea clathrate, Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer or Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer super-wetter, tallow amine ethoxylate, ammonium sulphate, and epoxide soybean oil either alone or in combination thereof, present in the range of 0.01 - 20% by weight of the composition.

[0450] Evaluation of synergistic effect of stable synergistic pesticidal composition of the present invention
[0451] A synergistic effect of two or more products exists whenever the action of an active ingredient combination is greater than the sum of the actions of the individual components. Synergism was calculated by using Colby’s method (Weeds, vol. 15 No. 1 (Jan 1967), pp. 20-2.
[0452] The synergistic action expected for a given combination of two active components can be calculated as follows:
[0453] XY
[0454] E = (X + Y) - - 100
[0455] The synergistic action expected for a given combination of three active components can be calculated as follows:
[0456] (XY+YZ+XZ) (XYZ)
[0457] E = (X + Y + Z) - - + - 100 10000
[0458] Where:
[0459] E represents expected percentage of pesticidal control for the combination of the two or three active ingredients at defined doses (for example equal to x, y and z, respectively).
[0460] X is the percentage of pesticidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula I) at a defined dose (equal to x).
[0461] Y is the percentage of pesticidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula II) at a defined dose (equal to y).
[0462] Z is the percentage of pesticidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula III) at a defined dose (equal to z). When the percentage of pesticidal control observed for the combination is greater than the expected percentage, there is a synergism effect.
[0463] Observed control (%)
[0464] Ratio = - Expected control (%)
[0465] Ratio of O / E > 1, synergism observed
[0466] The present invention is illustrated by way of examples, the examples are meant for illustrative purposes and should not be construed as limiting.

[0498] The treatments T1 to T28 were applied as foliar sprays, while T29 served as the untreated control. Two foliar applications were carried out at 15 -day intervals, initiated upon the appearance of Cotton plant in the experimental plots.
[0499] Observations of per cent boll damage of American bollworm and population of whitefly were recorded before spraying and at 14 days after the first and second applications. From each plot, five randomly selected Cotton plant were chosen, and three leaves from different canopy levels (top, middle and lower) were collected per plant. The number of boll damaged per plant was counted to determine infestation levels. However, Observations on whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) infestation were recorded at the same intervals. On the same 5 randomly selected plants per plot and three leaves from different canopy levels (top, middle and lower) were collected per plant. Based on the per cent reduction at 14 days after second spray in insect population, expected control was calculated and compared with observed control. The results of the trial have been presented here under in Table 1. [0516]
[0517] It is clearly evident from the data shown in above Table 1 for per cent insect control in Cotton crops that the stable synergistic pesticidal composition of the present invention comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III i.e., T1 to T4 are synergistic for insect population with > 1 Colby’s Ratio. The binary combination of two insecticide (Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II, Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula III and Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III) T5 to T16 is less effective as no synergistic effect has been observed for the control of insect population, as compared to stable synergistic pesticidal composition comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III T1 to T4. The synergy data presented herein represent the cumulative efficacy against both American bollworm and whitefly.
[0518] Experiment for Bio-efficacy evaluation of stable synergistic pesticidal composition of present invention:
[0519] For the ternary and binary composition based on Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III evaluation under field conditions, the basic test composition as Compound of Formula I 6% + Compound of Formula II 40% + Compound of Formula III 3% EC were used. For ternary composition, Compound of Formula I 6% + Compound of Formula II 40% + Compound of Formula III 3% EC was used and for binary compositions, Compound of Formula I 6% + Compound of Formula II 40% EC, Compound of Formula I 6% + Compound of Formula III 3% EC and Compound of Formula II 40% + Compound of Formula III 3% EC were used. The solo formulations of these products were used for comparison. The other formulations namely Compound of Formula I 15 % EC, Compound of Formula II 50 % EC and Compound of Formula III 10 % EC available in the market were also used for comparison.

[0817] From the example, it is clearly seen that the stable synergistic pesticidal composition of the present invention is superior for controlling the American bollworm and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in Cotton at 14 days after 1st& 2ndspray (Table 2A and 2B) in Cotton crop as compared to the other pesticides such as Compound of Formula I 15 % EC, Compound of Formula II 50 % EC and Compound of Formula III 10 % EC available in the market. The yield of Cotton crop also improved in the stable synergistic pesticidal composition comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III as compared to binary and solo compositions (Table 2C).
[0818] The disclosed exemplary stable synergistic pesticidal composition comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III @ 1875, 2500, 3125 and 5000 ml / ha further showed no phytotoxicity in the Cotton crop even after 1, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days after 1stspray (Table 2D).
[0819] It is evident from the above data that the stable synergistic pesticidal composition of the present invention comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III resulted in good control of American bollworm and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in Cotton with higher respective yields as compared to the reference standard products (binary compositions and solo products). Further, the stable synergistic pesticidal composition of present invention is resulted synergistic. In particular, it has now been found, surprisingly that, for example, the pesticidal activity of the stable synergistic pesticidal composition of present invention, compared with the pesticidal activity of individual components, is synergistic. In fact, various advantageous properties associated with the compositions according to the invention, include but are not limited to: knock down effect on insect pests including sucking pests complex at all developmental stages of insects such as egg, nymph, larva, pupa, and adult, preventing discoloration of leaves of plants and crops, enhanced tenderness to plants and crops, preventing ageing of plants and crops and other advantages.
[0820] From the above investigations, it will be observed that numerous modifications and variations can be effectuated without departing from the true spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the present invention. It is to be understood that no limitations with respect to the specific embodiments illustrated is intended or should be inferred. It should be understood that all such modifications and improvements have been deleted herein for the sake of conciseness and readability but are properly within the scope of the following claims.
