[0048] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0049] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0050] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 100 involves one or more A-IoT devices 110 and a plurality of communication devices 120 (such as a communication device 120-1, a communication device 120-2…a communication device 120-N) . Each communication device 120 may serve as a reader of the A-IoT devices 110. The plurality of communication devices 120 may communicate with the A-IoT devices 110, respectively. The communication device 120 may communicate with a radio access network and a CN, and thus may communicate with a CN network device 130.

[0051] The A-IoT refers to a new class of IoT devices primarily powered by harvesting ambient energy from radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other viable ambient energy source. The A-IOT device does not need to actively generate a signal but communicates by reflecting electromagnetic waves generated by other devices. Accordingly, as shown in FIG. 1, an A-IoT device 110 generally includes an energy harvesting module 112 and a backscattering module 114.

[0052] The A-IoT is an extension of the existing IoT. A-IoT devices carry out many of the same functions as IoT devices and target many of the same use cases but require additional design choices to meet solution demands. By relying on energy harvested from ambient sources, the A-IoT makes it possible to develop lower-cost, smaller, and maintenance-free devices, allowing the IoT to become more scalable in existing use cases and in use cases still to be developed.

[0053] Harvesting energy from ambient sources generates only minimal amounts of power. This creates the inherent requirement for A-IoT devices to be less complex and more power efficient.

[0054] FIG. 2A illustrates an example of Topology 1 for an A-IoT device. As shown in FIG. 2A, a topology 210 includes a base station 212 (also referred to as BS 212) and an A-IoT device 110. In the topology 210, the A-IoT device 110 directly and bidirectionally communicates with the base station 212. The communication between the base station 212 and the A-IoT device 110 includes A-IoT data and / or signaling. The topology 210 includes a possibility that the base station 212 transmits to the A-IoT device 110 is different from  the base station 212 receiving from the A-IoT device 110.

[0055] FIG. 2B illustrates an example of Topology 2 for an A-IoT device. As shown in FIG. 2B, a topology 220 includes the base station 212, the A-IoT device 110, and an intermediate node 222. In the topology 220, the A-IoT device 110 communicates bidirectionally with the intermediate node 222 between the A-IoT device 110 and the base station 212. In this topology, the intermediate node 222 may be a relay, an integrated access backhaul (IAB) node, a UE, a repeater, etc. which is capable of supporting A-IoT. The intermediate node 222 transfers A-IoT data and / or signaling between the base station 212 and the A-IoT device 110.

[0056] The base station 212 in Topology 1 and the intermediate node 222 in Topology 2 serve as a reader of the A-IoT device 110.

[0057] The above connectivity topologies for A-IoT networks and devices are defined for the purposes of the study. In all these topologies, the A-IoT device 110 may be provided with a carrier wave from other node (s) either inside or outside the topology. The links in each topology may be bidirectional or unidirectional.

[0058] Although not shown, there may be multiple BSs, UEs, assisting nodes, or intermediate nodes that could be involved in the topologies, respectively. The mixture of indoor and outdoor placement of such nodes is regarded as a network implementation choice. Accounts would need to be taken of potential impact on device or node complexity. In connectivity topologies, this does not imply the existence of multi-hop assisting or intermediate nodes.

[0059] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections in FIGS. 1-2B are given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations to the present disclosure. The environment may include any suitable number of devices adapted for implementations of the present disclosure.

[0060] The current study targets a further assessment of A-IoT, a new IoT technology, suitable for deployment in the communication system, which relies on ultra-low complexity devices with ultra-low power consumption for the very-low end IoT applications. The study shall provide clear differentiation, i.e. addressing use cases and scenarios that cannot otherwise be fulfilled based on existing 3GPP LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area Network) IoT technology e.g. NB-IoT including with reduced peak Tx power.

[0061] The definitions provided in TR 38.848 are taken into consideration herein, and the following are the exclusive general scope: a harmonized air interface design, deployment scenarios, FR1 licensed spectrum in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Spectrum deployment in-band to NR, in guard-band to LTE / NR, in standalone band (s) , Traffic types, Device-Originated Device-Terminated Triggered (DO-DTT) , Device-Terminated (DT) , with focus on rUC1 (indoor inventory) and rUC4 (indoor command) .

[0062] The overall objective shall be to study a harmonized air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for A-IoT to enable the following three types of devices. For the purpose of the study, RAN1 uses three terminologies, including a Device Type 1, a Device Type 2a, and a Device Type 2b.

[0063] An IoT device with Device Type 1 (also referred to as IoT device 1 hereinafter) has a peak power consumption of about 1 μW, energy storage, an initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) of up to 10X ppm, with neither DL nor UL amplification in the IoT device 1. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally.

[0064] An IoT device with Device Type 2a (also referred to as IoT device 2a hereinafter) has a peak power consumption of less than a few hundred μW, energy storage, an initial SFO of up to 10X ppm, with both DL and / or UL amplification in the IoT device 2a. The device’s UL transmission may be generated internally by the device or be backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally.

[0065] An IoT device with Device Type 2b (also referred to as IoT device 2b hereinafter) has a peak power consumption of less than a few hundred μW, energy storage, an initial SFO of up to 10X ppm, with both DL and / or UL amplification in the IoT device 2b. The UL transmission of the IoT device 2b is generated internally by the IoT device 2b.

[0066] The coverage design target of A-IoT devices may be a maximum distance of 10-50 m with device indoors as per TR 38.848. For Topologies 1 &2 (UE as intermediate node under network control) , A-IoT devices may be configured with no radio resource control (RRC) states, no mobility (i.e. at least no cell selection / re-selection-like function) , no HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest) , no ARQ (Automatic Repeat request) .

[0067] The deployment scenarios of A-IoT devices may have the following characteristics. In Deployment scenario 1 with Topology 1, there may be base station and  coexistence characteristics for micro-cell and co-site base station. In Deployment scenario 2 with Topology 2 and UE as intermediate node under network control, there may also be base station and coexistence characteristics for macro-cell and co-site base station. The location of the intermediate node is indoors.

[0068] From RAN#104, the study for traffic types will assess whether the harmonized air interface design above can address the DO-A (Device-originated autonomous) use case, only to identify which part (s) of the harmonized air interface design above is / are not sufficient for the DO-Ause case.

[0069] FIG. 3 illustrates a schematic diagram of a logical system architecture 300 for Topology 1. The architecture 300 involves an A-IoT device 305, an A-IoT RAN node 310 and an A-IoT CN node 320. A common reader function 310-1 and an A-IoT RAN node function 310-2 are deployed within the A-IoT RAN node 310. The common reader function 310-1 may communicate with the A-IoT device 305 by means of A-IoT radio. The A-IoT RAN node 310 may communicate with the A-IoT CN node 320 via XX interface. In Topology 1, the XX interface could be based on NG or a new interface carried over NG or a new interface.

[0070] FIG. 4 illustrates a schematic diagram of a protocol stack for Topology 1. For topology 1, the XXAP is terminated at an A-IoT RAN node.

[0071] FIG. 5 illustrates a schematic diagram of a logical system architecture 500 for Topology 2. The architecture 500 involves the A-IoT device 305, an A-IoT-enabled UE 510, an A-IoT-enabled gNB 520 and the A-IoT CN node 320. The A-IoT-enabled gNB 520 may be a gNB supporting A-IoT RAN node function, which is able to communicate with the A-IoT enabled UE via NR Uu interface. The A-IoT-enabled UE 510 may be a UE supporting common reader function, which is able to communicate with the A-IoT device via the A-IoT radio interface.

[0072] As shown in FIG. 5, a common reader function 510-1 is located at the A-IoT-enabled UE 510, and an A-IoT RAN node function 520-1 is deployed within the A-IoT-enabled gNB 520. The common reader function 510-1 may communicate with the A-IoT device 305 by means of A-IoT radio. The A-IoT-enabled UE 510 may communicate with the A-IoT-enabled gNB 520 via NR Uu interface. The A-IoT-enabled gNB 520 may communicate with the A-IoT CN node 320 via XX interface.

[0073] To support Topology 2, the following solutions are to be studied for conveying A-IoT upper layer information.

[0074] With an RRC based solution, A-IoT CN applies A-IoT upper layer information explicitly over XXAP signaling. A-IoT upper layer information is then relayed explicitly to / from the A-IoT-enabled UE via NR Uu RRC.

[0075] With a non-access stratum (NAS) based solution, there is no explicit termination of A-IoT upper layer information at A-IoT-enabled gNB. A-IoT upper layer information is transmitted over the NAS A-IoT-enabled UE’s .

[0076] With a UP based solution, there is no explicit termination of A-IoT upper layer information at A-IoT-enabled gNB. A-IoT upper layer information is transmitted as A-IoT-enabled UE’s user plane data.

[0077] FIG. 6 illustrates a schematic diagram of an RRC based solution for Topology 2. Upon receiving XXAP, i.e., an A-IoT related message, from the A-IoT CN, the A-IoT-enabled gNB transmits the related information towards the A-IoT-enabled UE via NR Uu RRC, and vice versa.

[0078] Inventory can be sent by the A-IoT CN node for a single device, or a group of devices, or all devices. The Inventory Request from the A-IoT CN node to the A-IoT RAN node, may include the following: an A-IoT Device Identification (to find a single device, a group of devices, or all devices) and a scope of inventory request (e.g., a certain area in which the inventory is to be triggered) . Multiple individual A-IoT Device IDs (one ID per device) can be provided to the A-IoT CN node via a single Inventory Report. Further, A-IoT commands can be sent by the A-IoT CN node for a single device.

[0079] In NAS / UP based solutions, A-IoT radio resources can be requested in advance to the NAS / UP based communication with the A-IoT device or can be requested along with the NAS / UP based communication. There are different ways to trigger A-IoT radio resource allocation, e.g., upon the A-IoT CN node requests or upon the UE requests, etc. Some aspects of A-IoT radio allocation may be preconfigured by the operation administration and maintenance (OAM) .

[0080] Currently, there are no specifications on reader selection and interface between readers for different topologies.

[0081] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there are  solutions provided for A-IoT enhancement for reader selection. In a solution, a CN network device receives capability information of at least one communication device. The capability information of a communication device indicates whether the communication device supports a reader function for an A-IoT service. The CN network device selects, from the at least one communication device, one or more communication devices as readers for the A-IoT service based on the capability information of the at least one communication device and service information associated with the A-IoT service.

[0082] In another solution, a RAN network device receives, from a CN device, a reader selection request for an A-IoT service. The RAN network device selects at least one communication device that supports a reader function for the A-IoT service. The RAN network device transmits, to the CN network device, confirmation information indicating the at least one communication device selected for the A-IoT service.

[0083] In this way, reader selection can be performed either by the CN network device or by the RAN network device, thereby implementing A-IoT enhancement for reader selection.

[0084] The following will describe the details with reference to FIGS. 7 to 20.

[0085] Reference is made to FIG. 7, which illustrates a signaling flow 700 of reader selection in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 700 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the CN network device 130. In addition, the signaling flow 700 involves at least one communication device 710, which may be considered as an example of the reader (s) 120 in FIG. 1. For example, the at least one communication device 710 may be or included in at least one RAN network device, e.g., gNB. Alternatively, or in addition, the at least one communication device may be or included in at least one terminal device, e.g., UE. The CN network device 130 may sometimes be referred to as an A-IoT CN node.

[0086] The CN network device 130 needs to obtain information about the at least one communication device 710 for reader selection. Thus, the communication device (s) 710 should report its capability before the CN network device 130 performs selection.

[0087] As shown in FIG. 7, the CN network device 130 receives 702 capability information of at least one communication device 710. The capability information of a communication device 710 indicates whether the communication device 710 supports a  reader function for an A-IoT service. For example, the communication device 710 reports its capability information to the CN network device 130, and the CN network device 130 stores a list of the communication devices 710 supporting the reader function for the A-IoT service.

[0088] In some embodiments, the communication device 710 may include a first RAN network device (e.g., gNB) . In such a case, the CN network device 130 may receive, from the first RAN network device, the capability information of the first RAN network device. For example, the RAN network device may report capability information via NG signalling, e.g., NG setup request / RAN configuration update. An access and mobility management function (AMF) receives the capability information and forwards it to the CN network device 130. Alternatively, the content of capability information may be transparent over NG interface.

[0089] In some embodiments, the capability information of the first RAN network device may be received in response to an A-IoT capability enquire message from the CN network device 130. For example, the CN network device 130 sends, to the AMF, the A-IoT capability enquire message indicating the interested RAN network device (s) . The AMF forwards the A-IoT capability enquire message to the RAN network device (s) indicated. In response to receiving such a message, the RAN network device reports the capability information. The AMF forwards the feedback to the CN network device 130.

[0090] Alternatively, or additionally, the communication device 710 may include a terminal device (e.g., UE) . In such a case, the CN network device 130 may receive, from the terminal device, the capability information of the terminal device in association with location information of the terminal device. For example, the terminal device reports capability information via ULInformationTransfer over the Uu interface, and / or INITIAL UE MESSAGE / UPLINK NAS TRANSPORT message. Alternatively, the location information of the terminal device may be reported to the CN network device 130. The CN network device 130 may need to maintain the location information and update the location of the terminal device.

[0091] Alternatively, or additionally, the capability information of the terminal device may be received in response to an A-IoT capability enquire message from the CN network device 130. For example, the CN network device 130 may initiate UECapabilityEnquiry / UECapabilityInformation procedure to obtain the A-IoT capability of the terminal device. For another example, the CN network device 130 may initiate  UEinformationRequest / UEinformationResponse procedure to obtain the A-IoT capability of the terminal device.

[0092] In some embodiments, the capability information of the terminal device may be stored as a UE context.

[0093] In some embodiments, other CN network device (e.g. application function (AF) or OAM) may send the information about which communication devices 710 support as an A-IoT reader, and the CN network device 130 may store this information after receiving.

[0094] Based on the capability information received from the communication device (s) 710 and service information associated with the A-IoT service, the CN network device 130 selects 704 one or more communication devices as readers for the A-IoT service. For example, the service information associated with the A-IoT service may include an A-IoT service area or other requirements when the A-IoT service triggers.

[0095] In some embodiments, the CN network device 130 may receive, from a further CN network device, first information about at least one first candidate communication device that supports a reader function for the A-IoT service. Then, the CN network device 130 may select a communication device as a reader for the A-IoT service from the communication device (s) 710 and / or the at least one first candidate communication device. For example, the CN network device 130 sends a reader selection request to the related RAN network devices, and the RAN network devices may report the candidate UEs or TRPs to the CN network device 130.

[0096] Alternatively, or additionally, the CN network device 130 may receive, from a second RAN network device, second information about at least one second candidate communication device that supports a reader function for the A-IoT service. Then, the CN network device 130 may select a communication device as a reader for the A-IoT service from the communication device (s) 710 and / or the at least one second candidate communication device. For example, some communication devices 710 provide the A-IoT service before, and the CN network device 130 may store capability information of these communication devices 710.

[0097] As an example, the CN network device 130 may determine the readers based on the candidate terminal devices or TRPs report from the RAN network devices. Alternatively, the reader configuration may be generated at the CN network device 130.

[0098] In some embodiments, the CN network device 130 may perform an  establishment procedure of an interface between the CN network device 130 and the selected communication device (s) 710 for communication of the A-IoT service. The CN network device 130 may transmit an inventory message and / or at least one command for the A-IoT service to the selected communication device (s) 710 via the established interface. In this way, the interface between the CN network device 130 and the selected communication device (s) 710 is established first, and then the inventory message and / or command (s) can be transmitted. For example, the CN network device 130 sends the inventory / command to the reader. The A-IoT RAN network device (for Topology 1, where the RAN network device is selected as a reader) or the A-IoT-enabled RAN network device (for Topology 2, where the RAN network device enables the A-IoT service) would allocate resources for the A-IoT service.

[0099] Alternatively, the inventory / command may be sent with the interface establishment request message.

[0100] In some embodiments, for each of the selected one or more communication devices, the CN network device 130 may transmit an establishment request for the interface to the selected communication device. The establishment request is transmitted over a stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) or internet protocol (IP) transportation layer. The CN network device 130 may receive an establishment complete message for the interface from the selected communication device. The establishment complete message is transmitted over the STCP / IP transport layer and indicates whether establishment of the interface is accepted or rejected.

[0101] Alternatively, the establishment request may be sent directly to the selected RAN network devices / terminal devices over the SCTP / IP transportation layer. And the feedback message may be also sent back to the CN network device over the SCTP / IP transportation layer.

[0102] In some embodiments, for each of the selected one or more communication devices, the CN network device 130 may transmit an establishment request for the interface to the selected communication device. The establishment request is transmitted via an NG interface between the CN network device 130 and an access and mobility management function (AMF) . The AMF is configured to forward the establishment request to the selected communication device. The CN network device 130 may receive an establishment complete message from the selected communication device. The  establishment complete message is transmitted via the established interface or via the NG interface and indicates whether establishment of the interface is accepted or rejected.

[0103] For example, the CN network device 130 may initiate the establishment of an interface between the selected reader (s) and the CN network device 130. The establishment request message may be sent from the CN network device 130 to the selected terminal device / RAN network device via the AMF (NG interface) . Further, the establishment complete message may be sent from the selected terminal device / RAN network device to the CN network device 130 via the AMF (NG interface) or via the established XX interface. The target RAN network device (s)  / terminal device (s) may accept the establishment or a failure of the establishment and send a feedback message to the CN network device 130 for confirmation.

[0104] In some embodiments, the establishment request may include a reader configuration of the A-IoT service.

[0105] The foregoing embodiments have described the establishment of interface between the CN network device 130 and the selected one or more communication devices. Next, the reader function may be released after completing the A-IoT service.

[0106] In some embodiments, if it is determined that the A-IoT service is completed, the CN network device 130 may initiate, to the selected communication device, a release of the reader function of the selected communication device or a release of the established interface. Alternatively, or additionally, the CN network device 130 may receive, from the selected communication device, an initiation request to release of the reader function of the selected communication device or a release of the established interface.

[0107] For example, the CN network device 130 may initiate a release of the reader function of the selected reader or a release of the established XXAP interface if the A-IoT service finished (e.g., the reader finishes the A-IoT data reporting, or the CN network device 130 wants to terminate the A-IoT services) . Alternatively, the reader may initiate the reader release or XXAP interface release if it finishes the A-IoT data reporting.

[0108] In some embodiments, the CN network device 130 may determine at least one topology type for the A-IoT service. The possible topology types for the A-IoT service may indicate A-IoT Topology 1 as shown in FIG. 2A where a RAN network device functions as a reader, or A-IoT Topology 2 as shown in FIG. 2B where a terminal device  functions as a reader. In some embodiments, the determined at least one topology type for the A-IoT service may be either one or both of A-IoT Topology 1 and A-IoT Topology 2. The CN network device 130 may select the communication device (s) 710 as readers for the A-IoT service further based on the at least one topology type.

[0109] In some embodiments, the CN network device 130 may transmit an indication of the at least one topology type to a RAN network device. which may be selected as a reader of the A-IoT service or be serving a terminal device that is selected as a reader of the A-IoT service.

[0110] For example, the A-IoT CN network device determines the topology type if the A-IoT service is triggered. If the RAN network device selects readers, the A-IoT CN network device should send the topology type indication to the RAN network device (as a UE reader selection criteria) , so that the RAN network device may select readers based on the topology type. If the A-IoT CN network device determines the readers, the topology type also needs to be indicated to the RAN network device.

[0111] The foregoing embodiments relate to reader selection, interface establishment and inventory / command procedure. The following will describe specific examples with reference to FIGS. 8A and 8B.

[0112] FIG. 8A illustrates a signaling flow 800A of communication for Topology 1 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 800A involves the CN network device 130 and a RAN network device 810, which may be considered as an example of the reader 120. It should be understood that there may be more RAN network devices 810. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 800A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1.

[0113] The RAN network device 810 may perform 802 A-IoT capability reporting in response to a capability enquire message from the CN network device 130. After receiving A-IoT capability reporting from a plurality of RAN network devices 810, the CN network device 130 may perform 804 reader selection from the plurality of RAN network devices 810 based on their capability information.

[0114] After determining that the RAN network device 810 has a reader function for an A-IoT service and selecting it as a reader for the A-IoT service, the CN network device 130 may perform 806 an interface establishment between the RAN network device 810  and the CN network device 130. Then, an inventory / command procedure may be performed 808 via the established interface.

[0115] FIG. 8B illustrates a signaling flow 800B of communication for Topology 2 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 800B involves the CN network device 130, the RAN network device 810 and a terminal device 820. The terminal device 820 may be considered as an example of the reader 120. The RAN network device 810 may forward information between the CN network device 130 and the terminal device 820. It should be understood that there may be more RAN network devices 810 and more terminal devices 820. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 800A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1.

[0116] The terminal device 820 may perform 810 A-IoT capability reporting in response to a capability enquire message from the CN network device 130. The RAN network device 810 forwards the reporting to the CN network device 130. After receiving A-IoT capability reporting from a plurality of UEs 820 via their corresponding RAN network device 810, the CN network device 130 may perform 812 reader selection from the plurality of UEs 820 based on their capability information.

[0117] After determining that the terminal device 820 has a reader function for an A-IoT service and selecting it as a reader for the A-IoT service, the CN network device 130 may perform 814, via the RAN network device 810, an interface establishment between the terminal device 820 and the CN network device 130. Then, an inventory / command procedure may be performed 816 via the established interface.

[0118] In addition, the CN network device 130 may further transmit assistance information for resource allocation. The following will describe in detail.

[0119] In some embodiments, the CN network device 130 may transmit, to a fourth RAN network device, assistance information for resource allocation to at least one terminal device. The at least one terminal device may be selected as a reader for the A-IoT service. The fourth RAN network device may be serving the at least one terminal device. For example, for Topology 2, and for NSA / UPF-based solution, the RAN network device needs to allocate the resources for the UE readers. Therefore, the A-IoT CN network device needs to explicitly send assistance information to the A-IoT-enabled RAN network device to help resource allocation.

[0120] In some embodiments, the assistance information may indicate at least one of the following: a transmission data size to be reserved for the A-IoT service, at least one ID of the at least one terminal device, the number of terminal devices that are selected as readers for the A-IoT service, an estimated number of A-IoT devices in the A-IoT service, a data size of an inventory message for the A-IoT service, or a data size of at least one command message for the A-IoT service. For example, the A-IoT CN network device provides a transmission data size that needs to be reserved for the A-IoT service to the A-IoT-enabled RAN network device, and the A-IoT-enabled RAN network device allocates the resource based on the indicated data size.

[0121] The above has describe reader selection by the CN network device. In some embodiments, reader selection may be performed by the RAN network device, or the RAN network device may perform a preselection or reselection procedure. For example, the A-IoT RAN network device (for Topology 1) or A-IoT-enabled RAN network device (for Topology 2) may be re-select the readers based on the real radio condition even if the A-IoT CN network device has selected the reader. The following will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 9 to 10B.

[0122] FIG. 9 illustrates a signaling flow 900 of reader selection in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 900 involves a RAN network device 910 and the CN network device 130. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 900 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The RAN network device 910 may sometimes be referred to as an A-IoT-enabled RAN network device or A-IoT-enabled node, such as a A-IoT-enabled gNB.

[0123] As shown in FIG. 9, the RAN network device 910 receives 902 a reader selection request for an A-IoT service from the CN network device 130.

[0124] In response to the reader selection request, the RAN network device 910 selects 904 at least one communication device that supports a reader function for the A-IoT service. In some embodiments, the communication device may include a transmission and reception point (TRP) . Alternatively, or additionally, the communication device may include a terminal device.

[0125] In some embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may receive a selection requirement from the CN network device 130. The selection requirement is used for selection of a reader for the A-IoT service. Then, the RAN network device 910 may select  the at least one communication device based on the selection requirement.

[0126] In some embodiments, the selection requirement may indicate a reader selection criterion for the RAN network device 910 to select one or more readers. In some embodiments, the selection requirement may alternatively or additionally indicate a service area of the A-IoT service. The RAN network device 910 may select the reader (s) so that the reader (s) can serve the service area. In some embodiments, the selection requirement may alternatively or additionally indicate a list of candidate readers for the A-IoT service. In these embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may determine to select one or more readers from the list of candidate readers. In some embodiments, the selection requirement may alternatively or additionally indicate a quality of service of the A-IoT service. The RAN network device 910 may select the reader (s) to satisfy the quality of service. In some embodiments, the selection requirement may alternatively or additionally indicate at least one key performance indicator (KPI) about the A-IoT service. The RAN network device 910 may select the reader (s) to satisfy the indicated KPI (s) . In some embodiments, the selection requirement may be included in the reader selection request received from the CN network device 130. In some other embodiments, the selection requirement may be transmitted to the RAN network device separately from the reader selection request.

[0127] For example, in the case that the A-IoT-enabled RAN network device selects the readers, the A-IoT CN network device sends the A-IoT reader selection request to the RAN network device via the AMF and NG interface. The RAN network device may decide the number of A-IoT readers and which TRP (s) or UE (s) to be the A-IoT reader, based on the received reader selection request.

[0128] Referring to FIG. 9, after the selection, the RAN network device 910 transmits 906 confirmation information to the CN network device 130. The confirmation information indicates the at least one communication device selected for the A-IoT service. The selected readers (s) may include one or more terminal devices, one or more TRPs, or RAN network devices. For example, the RAN network device may send a confirmation message which may include the selected the TRP ID (s) or RAN network device ID or UE ID (s) to the A-IoT CN network device. The confirmation message may be sent to the AMF via NG signaling, and then be transferred to the A-IoT CN network device by the AMF.

[0129] Based on the confirmation information received, the CN network device 130  performs 908 an establishment procedure of an interface with the selected communication device. The interface is used between the CN network device 130 and the at least one selected communication device for communication of the A-IoT service.

[0130] For example, the CN network device 130 may initiate XXAP interface establishment between the selected RAN network device (s) and the CN network device 130 and / or between the selected UE (s) and the CN network device 130. In some embodiments, the reader configuration may be included in the establishment request to be provided to the reader (s) . The establishment request message may be sent from the CN network device 130 to the selected terminal device or RAN network device via the AMF (NG interface) . In some embodiments, the establishment complete message may be sent from the selected terminal device or RAN network device to the CN network device 130 via the AMF (NG interface) or via the established XX interface. The target RAN network device (s)  / terminal device (s) , which are selected as readers, may accept the establishment or reject the establishment, and may send a feedback message to the CN network device 130 for confirmation.

[0131] After the establishment of the interface, the CN network device 130 may send the inventory / command to the reader (s) . The A-IoT RAN network device (for Topology 1) or the A-IoT-enabled RAN network device (for Topology 2) will allocate resources for the A-IoT service.

[0132] In some embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may transmit reader update information to the CN network device 130. The reader update information may indicate an update to the at least one communication device selected for the A-IoT service. The update to the at least one communication device may include at least one of the following: a replacement of a first communication device among the at least one communication device to a second communication device, an addition of a third communication device, or a removement of a fourth communication device among the at least one communication device.

[0133] In some embodiments, if the RAN network device selects other readers after the interface establishment and / or inventory / command procedures, the RAN network device needs to send the new reader-related information (e.g. reader ID) to the A-IoT CN network device, so that the A-IoT CN network device would release the legacy interface and initiate the interface establishment to the new readers.

[0134] There may be some scenarios when the RAN network device may change the selected reader (s) . For example, the RAN network device may determine changing from a UE 1 reader to UE 2 reader. As some other examples, the RAN network device may determine changing from an A-IoT RAN reader 1 to RAN reader 2. The RAN network device may determine changing from a UE reader to an A-IoT RAN reader or vice versa.

[0135] In some embodiments, the new reader may initiate the interface establishment by sending request message to the A-IoT CN network device. The A-IoT CN network device may release the reader by releasing the XXAP interface.

[0136] Since the capability information received indicates whether the communication device 710 supports the reader function for the A-IoT service, the topology type for the A-IoT service may be further determined.

[0137] The foregoing embodiments have described reader selection and interface establishment. Based on the reader selected and the interface established, the RAN network device 910 may perform inventory / command procedure.

[0138] In some embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may perform an establishment procedure of an interface between the CN network device 130 and the RAN network device 910 for communication of the A-IoT service. The RAN network device 910 may receive, from the CN network device 130 and via the established interface, an inventory message and / or at least one command for the A-IoT service.

[0139] Furthermore, the RAN network device 910 may select the readers based on topology type information sent by the CN network device 130. Alternatively, the RAN network device 910 may determine the topology type and perform reader selection.

[0140] In some embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may receive, from the CN network device, a first indication of at least one topology type for the A-IoT service. Then, the RAN network device 910 may select the at least one communication device based on the at least one topology type.

[0141] In some embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may determine at least one topology type for the A-IoT service based on the at least one selected communication device. Then, the RAN network device 910 may transmit, to the CN network device, a report of the at least one determined topology type for the A-IoT service. For example, in the case that the CN network device does not know the topology type (s) but it needs to  know the topology type, the RAN network device may determine the topology type (s) for the A-IoT service and perform the reader selection. Then, the RAN network device may report the topology type (s) explicitly to the CN network device in the reader selection confirmation. Alternatively, the RAN network device may report the reader IDs which implicitly indicate the topology type (e.g., the UE ID implies the Topology 2, and the TRP ID / RAN network device ID implies the Topology 1) .

[0142] In some embodiments, if the A-IoT RAN reader and UE reader are selected for the A-IoT service, the RAN network device 910 may report both topology types (Topology 1 and Topology 2) to the CN network device.

[0143] The foregoing embodiments relate to reader selection, interface establishment and inventory / command procedure. The following will describe specific examples with reference to FIGS. 10A and 10B.

[0144] FIG. 10A illustrates a signaling flow 1000A of reader selection for Topology 1 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 1000A involves the CN network device 130 and the RAN network device 910, which may be considered as an example of the reader 120. It should be understood that there may be more RAN network devices 910. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 800A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1.

[0145] The CN network device 130 transmits 1002 a reader selection request to the RAN network device 910. In response to the reader selection request, the RAN network device 910 performs 1004 reader selection. After completing the reader selection, the RAN network device 910 transmits 1006 reader selection confirmation to the CN network device 130.

[0146] The CN network device 130 may determine that the RAN network device 910 has a reader function for an A-IoT service based on the reader selection confirmation received. If the CN network device 130 selects the RAN network device 910 as a reader for the A-IoT service, it may perform 1008 an interface establishment between the RAN network device 910 and the CN network device 130. Then, an inventory / command procedure may be performed 1010 via the established interface.

[0147] FIG. 10B illustrates a signaling flow 1000B of reader selection for Topology 2 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow  1000B involves the CN network device 130, the RAN network device 910 and the terminal device 820. The terminal device 820 may be considered as an example of the reader 120. It should be understood that there may be more UEs 820. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 800A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1.

[0148] The CN network device 130 transmits 1012 a reader selection request to the RAN network device 910. In response to the reader selection request, the RAN network device 910 performs 1014 reader selection. After completing the reader selection, the RAN network device 910 transmits 1016 reader selection confirmation to the CN network device 130.

[0149] If the CN network device 130 selects, based on the reader selection confirmation received, the terminal device 820 as a reader for the A-IoT service, it may perform 1018, via the RAN network device 910, an interface establishment between the terminal device 820 and the CN network device 130. Then, an inventory / command procedure may be performed 1022 via the established interface.

[0150] In addition, the RAN network device 910 may further receive assistance information for resource allocation. The following will describe in detail.

[0151] In some embodiments, the RAN network device 910 may receive assistance information from the CN network device 130. The assistance information is used for resource allocation to at least one terminal device. The at least one terminal device is selected as a reader for the A-IoT service. The RAN network device 910 may allocate a set of resources to the at least one terminal device based on the assistance information.

[0152] In some embodiments, the assistance information may indicate at least one of the following: at least one identity (ID) of the at least one terminal device, the number of terminal devices that are selected as readers for the A-IoT service, an estimated number of A-IoT devices in the A-IoT service, a data size of an inventory message for the A-IoT service, or a data size of at least one command message for the A-IoT service.

[0153] In some embodiments, the assistance information may indicate a transmission data size to be reserved for the A-IoT service. The RAN network device may perform the resource allocation based on the indicated data size.

[0154] As being selected as readers for an A-IoT service, the readers may communicate with each other. A reader interface may be established between the readers to support the  inter-reader communication. FIG. 11 illustrates a signaling flow 1100 of inter-reader communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 1100 involves the reader 120-1 (also referred to as first reader or reader 1) and the reader 120-2 (also referred to as second reader or reader 2) . For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 1100 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1.

[0155] As shown in FIG. 11, the reader 120-1 performs 1102, with the reader 120-2 for the A-IoT service, a communication of signaling related to the A-IoT service, to support information exchange between readers. The signaling includes an ID of a source reader (source reader ID) from which the signaling is transmitted, an ID of a target reader (target reader ID) at which the signaling is received, and A-IoT information communicated for the A-IoT service. In some embodiments, the A-IoT information may include an indication of an allocated resource, and / or A-IoT data.

[0156] In some examples, the communication of signaling related to the A-IoT service may be a transmission of the signaling from the reader 120-1 to the reader 120-2. In this case, the reader 120-1 is the source reader and the reader 120-2 is the target reader, the signaling includes an ID of the reader 120-1, an ID of the reader 120-2, and the A-IoT information. In some examples, the communication of signaling related to the A-IoT service may be a transmission of the signaling from the reader 120-2 to the reader 120-1. In this case, the reader 120-2 is the source reader and the reader 120-1 is the target reader, the signaling includes an ID of the reader 120-2, an ID of the reader 120-1, and the A-IoT information.

[0157] In some embodiments, for A-IoT Topology 1, e.g. Topology 1 shown in FIG. 2A, if the reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 are in the same RAN network device, the signaling communicated between the two readers may depend on the implementations within the RAN network device. A RAN network device or RAN node supporting the A-IoT service may sometimes be referred to as A-IoT-enabled RAN node.

[0158] In some embodiments, for A-IoT Topology 1, e.g. Topology 1 shown in FIG. 2A, if the reader 120-1 includes a first RAN network device and the reader 120-2 includes a second RAN network device (i.e., the readers are in different RAN network devices) , the reader 120-1 may perform the communication of the signaling related to the A-IoT service via an Xn interface between the first RAN network device and the second RAN network device. The Xn interface between the RAN network devices may thus be reused  as the reader interface.

[0159] For the signaling over the Xn interface, in some embodiments, there may be one or multiple IDs of source readers as the first RAN network device may need collect the A-IoT information from more than one reader in this RAN network device. Alternatively, or in addition, there may be one or multiple IDs of target readers as the first RAN network device may want to transmit the A-IoT information to more than one reader in the second RAN network device. In some examples, the ID of a source reader or the ID of a target reader may be a gNB ID, a TRP ID, or may be a reader ID defined for the corresponding reader function of the RAN network device.

[0160] In some embodiments, for each combination of source reader ID (s) and target reader ID (s) , the transmitted A-IoT information may be different. For example, the source reader A may want to transmit the allocated resource to the target reader 1, and the source reader A wants to transmit the allocated AIoT-data to the target reader 2. Then, the format of the signalling may be constructed as follows: Source reader A, target reader 1, allocated resources; Source reader A, target reader 2, allocated A-IoT data.

[0161] In some embodiments, the information about the allocated resource may be explicitly transmitted over the Xn interface, but the A-IoT data may be transparently transmitted over the Xn interface.

[0162] In some embodiments, a new interface, referred to as reader-to-reader interface (or RR interface) , may be defined between readers in different RAN network devices. In an embodiment, the reader-to-reader interface may be carried over the Xn interface. The reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 may perform the communication of the signaling related to the A-IoT service via a first reader-to-reader interface defined over the Xn interface. FIG. 12A shows an example of an RR interface between two A-IoT RAN nodes (selected as Reader 1 and Reader 2) that is carried over the Xn interface between the two A-IoT RAN nodes.

[0163] In some embodiments, the first reader-to-reader interface between the first RAN network device and the second RAN network device may be set up via an Xn setup procedure between the first RAN network device and the second RAN network device.

[0164] In some embodiments, the first reader-to-reader interface between the first RAN network device and the second RAN network device over the Xn interface may be released  via an Xn release procedure between the first RAN network device and the second RAN network device.

[0165] In some embodiments, the A-IoT content included in the signaling over the defined first reader-to-reader interface may be transparent to the Xn interface.

[0166] In an embodiment, the reader-to-reader interface may be carried over the STCP or IP transportation layer. The reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 may perform the communication of the signaling related to the A-IoT service via a second reader-to-reader interface defined over a STCP or IP transportation layer. FIG. 12B shows an example of an RR interface between two A-IoT RAN nodes (selected as Reader 1 and Reader 2) that is carried over the STCP or IP transportation layer between the two A-IoT RAN nodes.

[0167] In some embodiments, for A-IoT Topology 2, e.g. Topology 2 shown in FIG. 2B, the reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 may be included in different terminal devices. A terminal device supporting A-IoT service may sometimes be referred to as an A-IoT-enabled-UE.

[0168] For the interface to support signaling of A-IoT information between two readers in different terminal devices, in some embodiments, an RRC solution may be considered. In some embodiments, if the reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 are different terminal devices under a same serving RAN network device, and only the information about allocated resources is exchanged, then the exchange may be performed depending on implementations of the serving RAN network device. This is because it is the RAN network device which is responsible for resource allocation of the served terminal devices.

[0169] In some embodiments, if the reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 are different terminal devices under a same serving RAN network device, then the A-IoT-related information may be transmitted from one of the readers to the serving RAN network device and forwarded by the serving RAN network device to the other one of the readers. The data may be stored in the RRC layer.

[0170] FIG. 13A illustrates schematic diagrams of an interface between readers for topology 2 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown, two readers in the different A-IoT-enabled terminal devices are served under the same A-IoT-enabled network node. The A-IoT-related information may be exchanged via the RRC layers of the A-IoT-enabled terminal devices with the A-IoT-enabled network node. The  exchange of resource allocation may be performed within the A-IoT-enabled network node.

[0171] FIG. 13B illustrates the example interfaces between the readers and the RAN node. For the exchange of the A-IoT data, a source reader in a A-IoT-enabled terminal device may transmit the A-IoT data (which may be stored in the RRC layer) to the A-IoT-enabled RAN node via the Uu interface, and the A-IoT-enabled RAN node may forward the A-IoT data to a target reader in another A-IoT-enabled terminal device via the Uu interface.

[0172] In some embodiments, the reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 may be included in different terminal devices under different RAN network devices. In this case, the signaling communicated between the reader 120-1 and the reader 120-2 may be forwarded by the two network devices.

[0173] In some embodiments, if the signaling is to exchange resource allocation, then the two RAN network devices may be involved in the signaling because the RAN network devices may know the resource allocation of the terminal devices. The signaling exchange of the resource allocation for readers may be performed over the Xn interface between the RAN network devices or NG interface. The readers may not be involved in the exchange. In some embodiments, the ID of the readers may be included in the signaling exchanged between the RAN network devices, to identify the concerned readers for the resource allocation.

[0174] In some embodiments, if the A-IoT data is to be exchanged between two readers included in terminal devices served by different RAN network devices, then the Xn interface and NG interface may also be involved. In such case, the source reader ID (s) and the target reader ID (s) may be needed in the signaling for A-IoT data exchange.

[0175] FIG. 13C illustrates the example interfaces between the readers and the RAN nodes. For the exchange of the A-IoT data, a source reader in a A-IoT-enabled terminal device may transmit the A-IoT data (which may be stored in the RRC layer) to its serving A-IoT-enabled RAN node via the Uu interface. The A-IoT-enabled RAN node may transmit the A-IoT data to another A-IoT-enabled RAN node which serves the target reader of the A-IoT data. Then the other A-IoT-enabled RAN node transmits the A-IoT data to the target reader in another A-IoT-enabled terminal device via the Uu interface.

[0176] For the interface to support signaling of A-IoT information between two readers in different terminal devices, in some embodiments, a non-access stratum (NAS) solution is considered. The A-IoT data may be collected and stored in the NAS layer of the terminal devices.

[0177] If a source reader has A-IoT-related signaling to be transmitted to a target reader, the source reader may transmit the signaling to an AMF via a NAS layer of the terminal device, which is then forwarded by the AMF to a NAS layer of the other one of the first and second terminal devices. More specifically, the source reader may send UL NAS data to its serving RAN network device, which may forward the NAS data to the AMF. In this case, the source reader ID (s) and the target reader ID (s) may be included in the NAS signaling. Then the AMF may read the UL NAS signaling from the reader and send the A-IoT data to the target reader in a terminal device via DL NAS signaling. In some embodiments, the DL information transfer or UL information transfer over the Uu interface may be reused and the DOWNLINK NAS TRANSPORT / UPLINK NAS TRANSPORT messages may be reused over the NG interface.

[0178] FIG. 14A illustrates schematic diagrams of an interface between readers for topology 2 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown, two readers in the different A-IoT-enabled terminal devices may exchange signaling via the AMF over the N1 NAS layer.

[0179] In some embodiments, for the NAS solution, the exchange of resource allocation between the readers may not need NAS data exchange, but may be performed within or between the RAN network devices as in the RRC solution.

[0180] FIG. 14B illustrates the example interfaces between the readers and the RAN node. For the exchange of the A-IoT data, a source reader in a A-IoT-enabled terminal device may transmit the A-IoT data to the A-IoT-enabled RAN node via the Uu interface, and the A-IoT-enabled RAN node may forward the A-IoT data to the AMF via the NG interface, and the AMF may forward the A-IoT data to another A-IoT-enabled RAN node which serves the target reader via the NG interface. The other A-IoT-enabled RAN node may transmit the A-IoT data to the target reader. The signaling may be carried out via NAS signaling.

[0181] For the interface to support signaling of A-IoT information between two readers in different terminal devices, in some other embodiments, a user plane function (UPF)  solution may be considered. The A-IoT data may be collected and stored in the UPF layer of the terminal devices.

[0182] If a source reader has A-IoT-related data to be transmitted to a target reader, the source reader may transmit the signaling to a UPF via a packet data unit (PDU) layer of the terminal device. The UPF may then forward the UPF s A-IoT-related signaling to a PDU layer of the target reader. The A-IoT-related data may be constructed as UL PDU data to be transmitted via the PDU layer. The source reader ID (s) and the target reader ID (s) may be included in the PDU data. Then the UPF may read the UL PDU data from the source reader and send the A-IoT data to target reader by DL PDU signalling. A data radio bearer (DRB) may be established to transmit the UL / DL A-IoT data.

[0183] In some embodiments, for the UPF solution, the exchange of resource allocation between the readers may not need PDU data exchange but may be performed within or between the RAN network devices as in the RRC solution.

[0184] FIG. 15A illustrates schematic diagrams of an interface between readers for topology 2 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown, two readers in the different A-IoT-enabled terminal devices may exchange signaling via the UPF over the PDU layer.

[0185] FIG. 15B illustrates the example interfaces between the readers and the RAN node. For the exchange of the A-IoT data, a source reader in a A-IoT-enabled terminal device may transmit the A-IoT data to the A-IoT-enabled RAN node via the Uu interface, and the A-IoT-enabled RAN node may forward the A-IoT data to the UPF via the NG-U interface, and the AMF may forward the A-IoT data to another A-IoT-enabled RAN node which serves the target reader via the NG-U interface. The other A-IoT-enabled RAN node may transmit the A-IoT data to the target reader. The signaling may be carried out via NAS signaling.

[0186] FIG. 16 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1600 implemented at a CN network device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 1600 will be described from the perspective of the CN network device 130 in FIG. 1.

[0187] At block 1610, the CN network device 130 receives capability information of at least one communication device. The capability information of a communication device  indicates whether the communication device supports a reader function for an A-IoT service.

[0188] At block 1620, the CN network device 130 selects, from the at least one communication device, one or more communication devices as readers for the A-IoT service based on the capability information of the at least one communication device and service information associated with the A-IoT service.

[0189] In some example embodiments, the CN network device 130 performs an establishment procedure of an interface between the CN network device and the selected one or more communication devices for communication of the A-IoT service; and transmits, to the selected one or more communication devices and via the established interface, an inventory message and / or at least one command for the A-IoT service.

[0190] In some example embodiments, the at least one communication device includes at least one of a first RAN network device or a terminal device. The CN network device 130 receives, from the first RAN network device, the capability information of the first RAN network device; and / or receives, from the terminal device, the capability information of the terminal device in association with location information of the terminal device.

[0191] In some example embodiments, the capability information of the first RAN network device and / or the capability information of the terminal device is received in response to an A-IoT capability enquire message from the CN network device.
