Description

MIXTURES CONTAINING ARYL AMIDINES AND BIOCONTROL AGENTS FOR FUNGAL CONTROLCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No.63 / 718,611 filed November 9, 2024, which is expressly incorporated by reference herein.BACKGROUND

[0002] Fungicides are compounds of either natural or synthetic origin which act to treat or protect plants against damage caused by fungi and / or the ensuing disease. Currently the practice of agriculture relies on the use of fungicides. Using fungicides also allows a grower to increase the yield, quality of crop, and further increase the value of the crop.

[0003] However, no one fungicide is useful in all situations and repeated usage of a single fungicide frequently leads to the development of resistance for that particular pathogen and moreover, sometimes to other related fungicides. Further, among commercially available fungicides, biological control agents or biocontrol agents (BCAs) provide environmentally friendly and commercially attractive alternative to synthetic chemical pesticides. Accordingly, research is being conducted to produce new combinations of fungicides, especially with biocontrol agents, that are safer, have better performance, require lower dosages, are easier to use, and cost less.SUMMARY

[0188] In one aspect, the mixtures disclosed herein are present at a weight ratio of a compound of Formula I-B to a biocontrol agent that exhibits enhanced efficacy in the composition.

[0189] The present disclosure contemplates all vehicles by which the mixtures of this disclosure may be formulated for delivery and used as a fungicide. Typically, formulations are applied to plant foliage or to the root system, or the surrounding soil, or even to a seed, as aqueous suspensions or emulsions. Such suspensions or emulsions may be produced from water- soluble, water-suspendible, or emulsifiable formulations which are solids, usually known as wettable powders; or liquids, usually known as emulsifiable concentrates (EC), aqueous suspensions, or suspension concentrates (SC). Moreover, formulations such as suspensions (OD, FS), pastes, pastilles and gel formulations are within the scope of the compositions disclosedherein. In some aspects, the composition is diluted. In some aspects, the composition is undiluted.

[0190] As will be readily appreciated, any material to which any fungicide mixture of this disclosure can be added may be used, provided they yield the desired utility without significant interference with the activity of these compositions as antifungal agents.

[0191] Concentrated formulations may be dispersed in water, or other liquids, for application, or formulations may be dust-like or granular, which may then be applied without further treatment. The formulations can be prepared according to procedures that are known and conventional in the agricultural chemical art. Methods to make and use agricultural compositions comprising the compound of Formula I and at least one biocontrol agent can be found in, for example, references such as, Hance et al. Weed Control Handbook (8th ed., Blackwell Scientific, Oxford, 1989); Mollet, H. and Grubenmann, A.: Formulation Technology: Emulsions, Suspensions, Solid Forms (Wiley VCH Verlag, Weinheim, 2001); Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook (4th ed., McGraw-Hill, New York, 1963); Browning, et al. "Agglomeration" in Chemical Engineering, Dec. 4, 1967, 147-48; Klingman, Weed Control as a Science (J. Wiley & Sons, New York, 1961); and US 3,060,084, US 3,299,566, US 4,172,714, US 4,144,050, US 3,920,442, US 5,180,587, US 5,232,701, US 5,208,030, EP 707 445, GB 2,095,558, and WO91 13546, each of which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.

[0192] Wettable powders, which may be compacted to form water-dispersible granules, comprise a fungicide mixture of this disclosure, a carrier and agriculturally acceptable surfactants. The concentration of the fungicide mixture in the wettable powder is usually from about 10% to about 90% by weight, more preferably about 25% to about 75% by weight, based on the total weight of the formulation. In the preparation of wettable powder formulations, the fungicide mixture can be compounded with any of the finely divided solids, such as prophyllite, talc, chalk, gypsum, Fuller's earth, bentonite, attapulgite, starch, casein, gluten, montmorillonite clays, diatomaceous earths, purified silicates or the like. In such operations, the finely divided carrier is ground or mixed with the composition in a volatile organic solvent. Effective surfactants, comprising from about 0.5% to about 10% by weight of the wettable powder, include sulfonated lignins, naphthalenesulfonates, alkylbenzenesulfonates, alkyl sulfates, and nonionic surfactants, such as ethylene oxide adducts of alkyl phenols.

[0193] Some aspects of the disclosure provide a fungicidal composition - in any of the aspects described herein comprising a compound of Formula I and any at least one biocontrol agent - formulated in a composition of an emulsifiable concentrate ( .<?., an emulsion concentrate or EC) that contains an effective amount of the compound of Formula I.

[0194] Some aspects of the disclosure provide a fungicidal composition - in any of the aspects described herein comprising a compound of Formula I-B and any at least one biocontrol agent - formulated in a composition of an emulsifiable concentrate (z.e., an emulsion concentrate or EC) that contains an effective amount of the compound of Formula I-B.

[0195] Emulsifiable concentrates of a fungicide mixture of this disclosure comprise a convenient concentration of the fungicide mixture, such as from about 1% to about 50% by weight, in a suitable liquid, based on the total weight of the emulsifiable concentrate formulation. The components of the fungicide mixture, j ointly or separately, are dissolved in a carrier, which is either a water-miscible solvent or a mixture of water-immiscible organic solvents, and emulsifiers. The concentrates may be diluted with water and oil to form spray mixtures in the form of oil-in-water emulsions.

[0196] Emulsifiers which can be advantageously employed herein can be readily determined by those skilled in the art and include various nonionic, anionic, cationic and amphoteric emulsifiers, or a blend of two or more emulsifiers. Examples of nonionic emulsifiers useful in preparing the emulsifiable concentrates include the polyalkylene glycol ethers and condensation products of alkyl and aryl phenols, aliphatic alcohols, aliphatic amines or fatty acids with ethylene oxide, propylene oxides such as the ethoxylated alkyl phenols and carboxylic esters solubilized with the polyol or polyoxyalkylene. Cationic emulsifiers include quaternary ammonium compounds and fatty amine salts. Anionic emulsifiers include the oil-soluble salts (e.g., calcium) of alkylaryl sulfonic acids, oil-soluble salts or sulfated polyglycol ethers and appropriate salts of phosphated polyglycol ether.

[0197] Representative organic liquids which can be employed in preparing the emulsifiable concentrates of the present disclosure are the aromatic liquids such as xylene, propyl benzenefractions, or mixed naphthalene fractions, mineral oils, substituted aromatic organic liquids such as dioctyl phthalate, kerosene, dialkyl amides of various fatty acids, particularly the dimethyl amides of fatty glycols and glycol derivatives such as the / / -butyl ether, ethyl ether or methyl ether of di ethylene glycol, and the methyl ether of tri ethylene glycol. Mixtures of two or more organic liquids are also often suitably employed in the preparation of the emulsifiable concentrate. The preferred organic liquids are xylene, and propyl benzene fractions, with xylene being most preferred. The surface-active dispersing agents are usually employed in liquid formulations and in the amount of from 0.1 to 20 percent by weight of the combined weight of the dispersing agent with the compositions. The formulations can also contain other compatible additives, for example, plant growth regulators and other biologically active compounds used in agriculture.

[0198] Aqueous suspensions comprise suspensions of one or more water-insoluble compounds, dispersed in an aqueous vehicle at a concentration in the range from about 5% to about 70% by weight, based on the total weight of the aqueous suspension formulation. Suspensions are prepared by finely grinding the components of the mixture either together or separately, and vigorously mixing the ground material into a vehicle comprised of water and surfactants chosen from the same types discussed above. Other ingredients, such as inorganic salts and synthetic or natural gums, may also be added to increase the density and viscosity of the aqueous vehicle. It is often most effective to grind and mix at the same time by preparing the aqueous mixture and homogenizing it in an implement such as a sand mill, ball mill, or pistontype homogenizer.

[0199] The composition may also be applied as a granular formulation, which is particularly useful for applications to the soil. Granular formulations usually contain from about 0.5% to about 10% by weight of the fungicides, based on the total weight of the granular formulation, dispersed in a carrier which consists entirely or in large part of coarsely divided attapulgite, bentonite, diatomite, clay or a similar inexpensive substance. Such formulations are usually prepared by dissolving the fungicide mixture in a suitable solvent and applying it to a granular carrier which has been pre-formed to the appropriate particle size, in the range of from about 0.5 to about 3 millimeters (mm). Such formulations may also be prepared by making a dough orpaste of the carrier and the composition and crushing and drying to obtain the desired granular particle.

[0200] Dusts containing the fungicide mixtures are prepared simply by intimately mixing the mixture in powdered form with a suitable dusty agricultural carrier, such as, for example, kaolin clay, ground volcanic rock, and the like. Dusts can suitably contain from about 1% to about 10% by weight of the fungicide mixture / carrier combination.

[0201] The formulations may contain agriculturally acceptable adjuvant surfactants to enhance deposition, wetting and penetration of the composition onto the target crop and organism. These adjuvant surfactants may optionally be employed as a component of the formulation or as a tank mix. The amount of adjuvant surfactant will vary from 0.01 percent to 1.0 percent volume / volume (v / v) based on a spray-volume of water, preferably 0.05 to 0.5 percent. Suitable adjuvant surfactants include ethoxylated nonyl phenols, ethoxylated synthetic or natural alcohols, salts or the esters of sulfosuccinic acids, ethoxylated organosilicones, ethoxylated fatty amines and blends of surfactants with mineral or vegetable oils.

[0285] The compositions are effective in use with plants in a disease-inhibiting and phytologically acceptable amount. The term "disease-inhibiting and phytologically acceptable amount" refers to an amount of the composition that kills or inhibits the plant disease for which control is desired, but is not significantly toxic to the plant. The exact concentration of composition required varies with the fungal disease to be controlled, the type of formulation employed, the method of application, the particular plant species, climate conditions, and the like.

[0286] The present compositions can be applied to fungi or their locus by the use of conventional ground sprayers, granule applicators, and by other conventional means known to those skilled in the art.

[0287] The following examples illustrate various aspects of the compositions described herein, but of course, should not be construed as limiting the claims.EXAMPLES

[0288] Fungicides were evaluated against PHAKPA either alone or in binary mixtures by combining each fungicide with the compound of Formula 1. Technical grade of the compound of Formula I was dissolved in acetone, which was then mixed with nine volumes of water containing 0.01% Tween-20. Biological materials were diluted in 0.01% Tween-20 and combined with the compound of Formula I. The fungicide solutions were applied onto soybean seedlings using an automated booth sprayer to run-off. All sprayed plants were allowed to air-dry prior to further handling. Soybean plants (variety Williams 82) were grown in soil-less mix, with one plant per pot. Ten-day old seedlings were used for testing. Plants were inoculated either 3-days prior to or 1-day after fungicide treatments. Plants were incubated for 24 h in a dark dew room at 22°C and 100% RH then transferred to a growth room at 23°C for disease to develop.

[0289] Fungicides were also evaluated against SEPTTR either alone or in binary mixtures by combining each fungicide with the compound of Formula I. Technical grade of the compound of Formula I was dissolved in acetone, which was then mixed with nine volumes of water containing 0.01% Triton-X. Biological materials were diluted in 0.01% Triton-x and combined with the compound of Formula I. The fungicide solutions were applied onto wheat seedlings using an automated booth sprayer to run-off. All sprayed plants were allowed to air-dry prior to further handling. Wheat plants (variety Yuma) were grown in soil-less mix, with 7-10 plants per pot. Ten- day old seedlings were used for testing. Plants were inoculated 1-day after fungicide treatments. Plants were incubated for 24 h in a dark dew room at 20°C and an additional 72 h in light and 100% RH then transferred to a greenhouse at 18°C for disease to develop.

[0290] Fungicides were also evaluated against BOTRC1 either alone or in binary mixtures by combining each fungicide with the compound of Formula I. Technical grade of the compound of Formula I was dissolved in acetone, which was then mixed with nine volumes of water containing 0.01 % Triton-X. Biological materials were diluted in 0.01% Triton-x and combined with the compound of Formula I. The fungicide solutions were applied onto grape seedlings using an automated booth sprayer to run-off. All sprayed plants were allowed to air-dry prior to further handling. Grape plants (variety Pinot noir) were grown in soil-less mix, with 1 plant per pot. 5-6- week-old seedlings, trimmed to one leaf were used for testing. Plants were inoculated 1-day afterfungicide treatments. Plants were incubated for 4 days in a dark dew room at 22°C and 100% RH until time of rating.

[0291] Fungicides were also evaluated against COLLLA either alone or in binary mixtures by combining each fungicide with the compound of Formula I. Technical grade of the compound of Formula I was dissolved in acetone, which was then mixed with nine volumes of water containing 0.01% Triton-X. Biological materials were diluted in 0.01% Triton-X and combined with the compound of Formula I. The fungicide solutions were applied onto cucumber seedlings using an automated booth sprayer to run-off. All sprayed plants were allowed to air-dry prior to further handling. Cucumber plants (variety Straight eight) were grown in soil-less mix, with 1 plant per pot. 10 tol2-day old seedlings were inoculated 1-day after fungicide treatments. Plants were incubated for 48 hrs in a dark dew room at 22°C and 100% RH then transferred to a growth room at 23°C for disease to develop.

[0292] Once disease was fully expressed on untreated plants, disease severity was assessed on the sprayed first true leaves.

[0293] Factors (Obs / Exp) were calculated using Colby’s method. The expected disease control (%DC exp) of a mixture consisting of two components was predicted by the following formula: %DC exp = (X + Y) - (XY / 100) where X and Y are the percent disease control given by the individual fungicide component at the defined rate in the mixture. If the ratio (Factor (Obs / Exp)) between the observed disease control of the mixture (%DC obs) and the expected disease control of the mixture (%DC exp) is greater than 1, enhanced efficacy is present.

[0294] Controlled chamber studies were conducted where treatments were applied as either a 1-day protectant (1DP) or as a 3-day curative (3DC) against PHAKPA or 1-day protectant (1DP) against PHAKPA, SEPTTR, BOTRCI or COLLLA to evaluate interactions of the compound of Formula I and other biologicals.Example 1.
