[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 723,461, filed 21 November 2024, the contents of which are hereby incorporated herein by reference in their entirety.BACKGROUND

[0002] Many personal care compositions that are available in the market today have multiple ingredients, which serves to drive high production cost and processing time. Furthermore, multiple surfactants are utilized in personal care and home care products to impart foaming properties, and the use of certain surfactants may raise concerns about environmental influences and dermatological issues.

[0003] Liquid cleansing compositions, such as aqueous foaming compositions like hand soaps, body washes, and shower gels, should desirably have acceptable levels of foam production for consumer satisfaction. Foam production is a key attribute for consumers when choosing products. To achieve a desirable foam production, manufacturers incorporate sufficient quantities of active ingredients, such as surfactants, into the compositions. Liquid cleansing compositions require minimal levels of surfactant to provide good cleaning and dispensing properties and good foaming of the liquid cleansing composition during use. Also, it is desired to provide a sufficient amount of foam that is stable for a desired amount of time during use and has a desirable foam texture, such as sufficient creaminess. Multiple surfactants and surfactant amounts, however, may serve to increase cost and manufacturing complexities of personal care compositions.

[0004] Accordingly, there is need for formula simplification of personal care compositions such as hand soaps, body washes, and shower gels to eliminate or reduce ingredients, including ingredients of concern, without comprising the product’s efficacy and end benefits to the user.BRIEF SUMMARY

[0005] The present disclosure is directed to a personal care composition, such as a liquid cleansing composition, comprising a surfactant blend comprising an anionic surfactant and a zwitterionic surfactant; at least one sensate; and a liquid carrier.

[0006] In certain embodiments disclosed herein, the zwitterionic surfactant is cocamidopropyl betaine, and in certain embodiments, the anionic surfactant is sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). In embodiments wherein the anionic surfactant is SLES, the SLES may have less than two degrees of ethoxylation, and in certain embodiments, the SLES may be SLES 1EO.

[0007] In various embodiments, the anionic surfactant is present in the personal care composition in an amount ranging from about 10 wt% to about 15 wt%, such as from about 11 wt% to about 12 wt%, or about 11,5 wt%, based on a total weight of the personal care composition. In certain embodiments, the zwitterionic surfactant is present in the personal care composition in an amount ranging from about 5 wt% to about 10 wt%, such as from about 7 wt% to about 8 wt%, or about 7.2 wt%, based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

[0008] According to certain embodiments disclosed herein, the at least one sensate is selected from trehalose, sorbitol, glycerin, triethyl citrate, jojoba, aloe vera, a water-soluble, biodegradable cationic biopolymer (e.g., Aurist™), or a combination thereof, and in certain embodiments, the at least one sensate is triethyl citrate. In certain embodiments, the at least one sensate comprises triethyl citrate and sorbitol. In certain embodiments, the at least one sensate is present in the personal care composition in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt% to about 5 wt%, such as from about 0.15 wt% to about 1 wt%, from about 0.25 wt% to about 0.5 wt%, about 0.25 wt%, or about 1 wt%, by weight based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

[0009] In certain embodiments, the surfactant blend further comprises a nonionic surfactant, and in certain embodiments, the nonionic surfactant is an alkyl polyglucoside. In certain embodiments, the alkyl polyglucoside is selected from capryl caprylyl glucoside, coco-glucoside, decylglucoside, or combinations thereof. In certain embodiments of the disclosure, the non-ionic surfactant is present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt% to about 5 wt%, such as from about 1 wt% to about 3 wt%, or about 1 wt%, by weight based on a total weight of the personal care composition. According to various embodiments, the personal care composition has a viscosity ranging from about 8,000 cP to about 15,000 cP, such as about 8,500 cP to about 11,000 cP.

[0030] In certain embodiments, disclosed herein is a personal care composition comprising a surfactant blend, wherein a first surfactant is an anionic surfactant. As used herein, “anionic surfactant” means those surface-active or detergent compounds that contain an organic hydrophobic group containing generally 8 to 26 carbon atoms or generally 10 to 18 carbon atoms in their molecular structure and at least one water-solubilizing group selected from sulfonates, sulfates, and carboxylates so as to form a water-soluble detergent. Usually, the hydrophobic group will comprise a C8-C22 alkyl or an acyl group. Such surfactants are employed in the form of water- soluble salts, and the salt-forming cation may be selected from sodium, potassium, ammonium, magnesium and mono-, di- or tri-C2-C3 alkanolammonium, with the sodium, magnesium and ammonium cations again being the usual ones chosen. Some examples of suitable anionic surfactants include, but are not limited to, the sodium, potassium, ammonium, and ethanolammonium salts of linear -Cis alkyl ether sulfates, ether sulfates, and salts thereof. Suitable anionic ether sulfates have the formula R(OC2H4)nOSO3M, wherein n is 1 to 12, or 1 to 5, and R is an alkyl, alkylaryl, acyl, or alkenyl group having 8 to 18 carbon atoms, for example, an alkyl group of C12-C14 or C12-C16, and M is a solubilizing cation selected from sodium, potassium, ammonium, magnesium and mono-, di- and triethanol ammonium ions. Exemplary alkyl ether sulfates contain 12 to 15 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups thereof, e.g., sodium laureth (2EO) sulfate or sodium laureth (1EO) sulfate. In certain embodiments, a preferred exemplary anionic surfactant that may be used in the personal care compositions of the present disclosure include SLES 1EO.

[0031] SLES is an anionic surfactant that is widely used in cleaning products and personal care compositions as a primary surfactant. In addition to an excellent ability to clean a surface (e.g., skin), SLES also has excellent emulsification and foamability properties. SLES is prepared by ethoxylation of dodecyl alcohol produced from palm kernel oil or coconut oil, followed by the929402-00-WG-01-PC sulfation of the resulting ethoxylate and neutralization to the sodium salt. 1,4-dioxane may be formed as a by-product during the ethoxylation step.

[0032] The chemical formula of SLES is CH3(CH2)n(OCH2CH2)nOSO3Na. SLES is heterogeneous in the number of ethoxyl groups. The average degree of ethoxylation can be specified in the name. For example, SLES 1EO refers to SLES having an average degree of ethoxylation of 1.

[0033] SLES raw materials contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane. which is a chemical formed as a by-product during the ethoxylation step. The higher the number of ethoxyl groups is, the higher level of 1,4-dioxane SLES raw materials contain. For example, SLES 2EO (SLES having an average degree of ethoxylation of 2) contains up to about 50 ppm 1,4-dioxane. If 7-18% of SLES 2EO is contained in a composition, the composition will contain more than 1 ppm 1,4-dioxane. 1,4-dioxane is a likely carcinogen. 1,4-dioxane is very stable and does not degrade naturally. Furthermore, it is not possible to eliminate 1,4-dioxane in the processes of treating water. It has been recognized that the usage of compositions containing SLES has impact on ground-water contamination. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that the level of 1,4-dioxane in products be monitored and encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane. New York is banning the sale of household cleaning and personal care products containing more than 2 ppm 1,4-dioxane at the end of 2022 and more than 1 ppm at the end of 2023.

[0034] One approach to eliminate or reduce 1,4-dioxane in certain compositions, such as home care compositions, is to use sodium lauryl sulfate (without ethoxylation) instead of SLES. However, the stability of such compositions containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) at low temperature may be poor and a user's skin may get irritated after contact with the composition. As noted above, the lower the degree of ethoxylation of SLES, the lower the concentration of 1,4- dioxane will be. Accordingly, in certain embodiments, the sodium lauryl ether sulfate used in the personal care compositions disclosed herein may have an average ethoxylation of less than 2. In certain embodiments, the sodium lauryl ether sulfate used in the personal care compositions disclosed herein may have an average ethoxylation of about 1 to about 5 mole per mole of lauryl ether sulfate group. In some instances, the average ethoxylation of the sodium lauryl ether sulfate is about 1 to about 4, about 1 to about 3, about 1 to about 2, or about 1 mole per mole of lauryl ether sulfate group. In certain embodiments, the sodium lauryl ether sulfate has an average ethoxylation of 1 about mole per mole of lauryl ether sulfate group or less.

In certain embodiments, the amphoteric surfactant is cocamidopropyl betaine. In certain embodiments, the personal care composition disclosed herein comprises a surfactant blend that comprises an anionic surfactant (e.g., SLES 1EO) and a zwitterionic surfactant.

Although Comp. 3 (sorbitol) gave a high reading at 13,680 cP, Comp. 2 (TEC / Sorbitol) was observed with the lowest viscosity at 8,860 cP. While not wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that this is due to the impact of the TEC, which lowers the viscosity in formulations. The analytically tested micro robustness results showed all formulations passed and exhibited good robustness against bacteria growth, a key criteria for product stability. It is made by a bio-fermentation process from sucrose and is known to be a conditioning agent for hair and skin. For skin in body wash applications, it reduces roughness and improves rinsability.

[0091] As indicated by the DFA results, the Maximum Foam Volume overall for each of Compositions 1-5 performed better than the control. The initial bubble count, a gauge on how many bubbles are generated when making foam, was observed to be parity to the control for Compositions 1, 2, 4, and 5. The results of sensorial questionnaire show that Comp. 2 and Comp.4 received the strongest sensorial ratings, and all of Compositions 1-5 had improved sensorial properties as compared to the control.

Claims

CLAIMSWhat Is Claimed Is:

1. A personal care composition comprising: a surfactant blend comprising an anionic surfactant and a zwitterionic surfactant; at least one sensate; and a liquid carrier.

2. The personal care composition according to claim 1, wherein the zwitterionic surfactant is cocamidopropyl betaine.

3. The personal care composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the anionic surfactant is sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

4. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the anionic surfactant is SLES with less than two degrees of ethoxylation, such as SLES 1EO.

5. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the anionic surfactant is present in the personal care composition in an amount ranging from about 10 wt% to about 15 wt%. such as from about 11 wt% to about 12 wt%, or about 11.5 wt%. based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

6. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the zwitterionic surfactant is present in the personal care composition in an amount ranging from about 5 wt% to about 10 wt%, such as from about 7 wt% to about 8 wt%, or about 7.2 wt%, based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

7. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one sensate is selected from trehalose, sorbitol, glycerin, triethyl citrate, jojoba, aloe vera, a water-soluble, biodegradable cationic biopolymer (e.g., Aurist™), or a combination thereof.

8. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one sensate is triethyl citrate.

9. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one sensate comprises triethyl citrate and sorbitol.

10. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one sensate is present in the personal care composition in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt% to about 5 wt%, such as from about 0.15 wt% to about 1 wt%, from about 0.25 wt% to about 0.5 wt%, about 0.25 wt%, or about 1 wt%, by weight based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

11. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising at least one fragrance.

12. The personal care composition according to claim 11 , wherein the at least one fragrance is present in an amount of about 0.1 wt% to about 5 wt%, such as from about 1 wt% to about 2 wt%, about 1 wt%, or about 1.05 wt%, by weight based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

13. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the surfactant blend further comprises a nonionic surfactant.

14. The personal care composition according to claim 13, wherein the nonionic surfactant is an alkyl polyglucoside.

15. The personal care composition according to claim 13 or 14, wherein the nonionic surfactant is selected from caprylyl glucoside, coco-glucoside, decyl-glucoside, or combinations thereof.

16. The personal care composition according to any one of claims 13-15, wherein the nonionic surfactant is present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt% to about 5 wt%. such as fromabout 1 wt% to about 3 wt%. or about 1 wt%, by weight based on a total weight of the personal care composition.

17. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the personal care composition has a viscosity ranging from about 8,000 cP to about 15,000 cP, such as about 8,500 cP to about 11,000 cP.

18. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the anionic surfactant and the zwitterionic surfactant are present in a weight ratio ranging from about 1:1 to about 5:1, such as about 1.5:1 to about 2:1 or about 1.6:1.

19. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the liquid carrier comprises water.

20. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the personal care composition is a bath soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or skin cleanser.

21. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the personal care composition is free of or substantially free of SLES 2EO.

22. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the personal care composition further comprises at least one foam booster.

23. The personal care composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the personal care composition is free of or substantially free of cocomonoethanol amide (CMEA), polyquartemium-7, and EDTA.

24. A method of manufacturing a personal care product, the method comprising:blending together a surfactant blend consisting of an anionic surfactant and an amphoteric surfactant, at least one sensate, and a liquid carrier to form a personal care composition according to any one of claims 1 to 23; and adding a predetermined volume of the personal care composition to a container to form the personal care product.
