Description

Radial output connector

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of connectors, and more particularly to radial output connectors.

[0002] Radial output connectors are plugs used particularly in audio engineering to connect multiple devices via a cable equipped with such connectors. One end of the connector has pins configured to plug into a device, while the other end has contacts or terminals to which a cable is connected.

[0003] Such radial output connectors are particularly useful in configurations where there is not enough space for the cable equipped with the connector to extend beyond the connector once the connector is plugged in.

[0004] British patent application GB2493378A describes a radial exit connector according to the prior art, in which the cable exiting radially from the radial exit connector is sandwiched between the edge of the cylindrical connector body and a cover attached to one end of the connector body and fixed to the connector body by two screws extending into the side wall of the connector body.

[0005] Such a radially exited connector only imperfectly retains a cable within the connector body, since the contact area of the cover on the cable is limited by the cover's abutment against the connector body. Therefore, pulling on the cable risks damaging the solder joints to the internal terminals of the connector body. This type of connector is thus poorly suited to cables of varying diameters, as the cover will not hold cables with a diameter that is too small, and for cables with a diameter that is too large, it will not be possible to properly seat the cover against the connector body, leading to sealing problems.

[0006] The German patent document DE202016008916U1 describes a connector according to the prior art.

[0007] The present invention aims to overcome these drawbacks of prior art connectors.

[0008] The present invention therefore relates to a radial output connector, comprising a hollow cylindrical body, a first end of the body carrying a connector extending inside the body by way of connecting lugs, characterized in that a cylindrical opening opening onto the inside of the body is formed in the second end of the body opposite the first end in the direction of the height of the body, at least one radial through slot being further formed through the lateral wall of the body, at least one radial slot extending in the direction of the height of the body to the second end of the body and communicating with the cylindrical opening formed in the second end of the body, at least one slot being configured to allow radial passage of a cable configured to be connected to the connecting lugs of the connector,The connector further comprises a flange having a flat base extended by as many tabs as there are radial slots, each tab being formed perpendicular to the plane of the base, the tabs being configured to slide in the radial slot(s) and the base being configured to be inserted into the circular opening, the connector further comprising a stop configured to attach to the second end of the body by pressing against the base of the flange, such that when a cable is connected to the terminals of the connector, the flange is configured to bend the cable so as to exit radially between the edge of at least one radial slot and at least one tab, and the stop is configured to press the flange against the bend in the cable formed in the body and the tab inserted in the slot against the cable.

[0009] The radial output connector according to the invention is preferably a circular radial output connector.

[0010] The design ensures that the clamp presses against the cable regardless of its diameter and holds it securely via the force exerted by the stop. The cable size is limited only by the width of the slot, making the connector suitable for securely holding cables of varying diameters.

[0011] In addition, the connector is easy to assemble once the cable is soldered to the internal lugs of the connector.

[0012] According to one embodiment, a thread is formed in the second end of the body, the stop being a threaded ring configured to screw into the second end of the body, above the base of the flange.

[0013] According to one embodiment, a thread is formed on the external surface of the second end of the body, the stop being a threaded cap configured to screw onto the thread of the second end of the body, on the base of the flange.

[0014] These two embodiments ensure that the stop can be firmly pressed against the flange by screwing, with no other limitation than the size of the cable.

[0015] According to one embodiment, a hole is formed in the center of the cap, a projection formed on the base of the flange being configured to fit into the hole in the cap when the cap is screwed onto the second end of the body.

[0016] According to one embodiment, the body includes a radial slot and the flange a tab to form a single radial outlet connector.

[0017] According to one embodiment, the body comprises two radial slots formed diametrically opposite on the lateral wall of the body and the flange two tabs formed at two opposite ends of the base.

[0018] According to one embodiment, the body comprises two radial slots forming a non-flat angle formed on the lateral wall of the body and the flange two tabs forming with each other the same angle as the slots.

[0019] These two embodiments therefore concern connectors with two radial outputs, with a single flange and a single stop for the two cables.

[0020] According to one embodiment, the base of the flange has a shape among circular, polygonal, rectilinear or cross-shaped.

[0021] According to one embodiment, the edge of the flange tongue configured to come into contact with the cable has a shape among flat, rounded, pointed.

[0022] The pointed and rounded shapes allow for better centering of the cable in the slot when tightening, regardless of its diameter, as well as a larger contact surface with the cable for better support.

[0023] According to one embodiment, the edge of the radial slot configured to come into contact with the cable has a shape among flat, rounded, pointed.

[0024] The pointed and rounded shapes allow for better centering of the cable in the slot when tightening, regardless of its diameter, as well as a larger contact surface with the cable for better support.

[0025] According to one embodiment, the connector carried by the first end of the body is one of the following: TS jack, TRS jack, DC and RCA.

[0026] According to one embodiment, at least two of the body, the flange and the stop have different colors.

[0027] The different colors allow you to configure connectors by type, for example by type of connector, use or cable type, to identify them more easily visually in use, especially to avoid incorrect connections.

[0028] The invention also relates to an assembly comprising a cable, at least one end of which has a connector as described above.

[0029] To better illustrate the object of the present invention, preferred embodiments will now be described, in conjunction with the attached drawings.

[0050] is an exploded view of the radial output connector of the.

[0051] Referring now to Figures 1 and 2, we can see that a radial output connector 1 is shown according to a first embodiment of the invention. The radial output connector 1 comprises a body 2, generally cylindrical and hollow, carrying at a first end 2a in the direction of the generatrix of the cylinder (also called the height direction of the body 2), a connector 3, and at a second end 2b, opposite to the first end 2a in the direction of the generatrix of the cylinder, a flange 4 and a stop 5 which will be described in more detail below.

[0052] The body 2 comprises a constricted central portion 6 forming two enlarged ends 7a, 7b on either side of the central portion 6 of the body 2, the two enlarged ends 7a, 7b having a diameter greater than the diameter of the central portion 6. In the non-limiting embodiment shown, the two enlarged ends, 7a, 7b respectively, are connected to the central portion 6 by a chamfer, 8a, 8b respectively. A chamfer 8c is also formed on the end face of the second end 2b. This shape of the body 2 allows, in particular, for a better grip on the radial output connector 1 by the user, who can easily grasp it between the thumb and forefinger.

[0053] A radial through slot 9 is formed in the body 2, in the direction of the height of the body 2 corresponding to the direction of the generatrix of the cylinder of the body 2, extending from the end 2b of the body towards the central part 6, below the enlarged end 7b in the non-limiting embodiment shown. The lower edge 90 of this slot 9 is pointed in the non-limiting embodiment shown.

[0054] Slot 9 is configured for the passage of a cable C, the pointed end 90 allowing better reception of the cable C and better retention of it in slot 9. However, as described below, other shapes can be provided for the lower edge 90 of slot 9, without departing from the scope of the present invention.

[0055] A tapped hole 10 is formed in the body 2, extending into the body 2 from the second end 2b of the body 2.

[0056] The flange 4 comprises, in the non-limiting embodiment shown, a round base 11 having a flat lower surface for pressing on the cable C as will be described below, the base 11 having a diameter corresponding substantially to the internal diameter of the body 2, and a tab 12, extending perpendicularly with respect to the base 11, the tab 12 having a shape complementary to that of the slot 9, and in particular a rounded front face, such that the tab 12 is configured to slide in the slot 9 and complete the shape of the body 2 of the connector 1 when the flange 4 is inserted into the slot 9.

[0057] The lower edge 13 of the tongue 12 is pointed, to better constrain and center the cable C intended to be sandwiched between the lower edge 90 of the slot 9 and the lower edge 13 of the tongue 12.

[0058] The upper edge 14 of the tongue 12 is chamfered to extend the chamfer 8c of the second upper end 2b.

[0059] A ring 5 with an external thread 15 is configured to screw into the tapping 10 of the body 2, once the flange 4 is introduced into the body 2 by the second end 2b, the ring 5 then pressing on the base 11 of the flange 4 to press the flange 4 and the tongue 12 against the cable C, the ring 5 then acting as a stop.

[0060] A hex / Allen type hole 16 is formed in the upper part of the ring 5 to allow the ring 5 to be screwed into the body 2. It is understood that the invention is not limited in this respect and that any type of hole (flat, cruciform, etc.) allowing the ring 5 to be screwed is envisaged within the scope of the present invention.

[0061] The connector 3 in the non-limiting embodiment shown is a DC connector, described here for illustrative and non-limiting purposes.

[0062] The connector 3 comprises a hollow socket 17, formed of two cylindrical parts with the same axis separated by a shoulder 18, respectively a cylindrical part of large diameter 17a and a cylindrical part of small diameter 17b. The cylindrical part of large diameter 17a has an external thread 19 for screwing the socket 17 into a tapped hole (not shown in Figures 1 and 2) formed inside the body 2 at the first end 2a, the shoulder 18 being configured to abut against the first end 2a of the body 2 when the socket 17 is screwed into the body 2. Two arc-shaped lugs 20 are formed on the socket 17 opposite the shoulder 18 to facilitate the insertion and screwing of the socket 17 into the body 2.

[0063] Connectivity 3 also includes:

[0064] - an L-shaped lug 21 comprising two orthogonal parts, with a through hole, respectively 22, 23, formed in each of the two orthogonal parts;

[0065] - a lug 24 formed by a hollow cylindrical part 25 from one edge of which extends a tab 26, a hole 27 being formed at the free end of the tab 26;

[0066] - a hollow cylinder 28;

[0067] - a connecting piece 29 having a head 30 from which a rod 31 extends; and

[0068] - a collar 32 having a shoulder 33 at its end.

[0069] The rod 31 of the connecting piece 29 is inserted into the hole 23 of the L-shaped lug 21, then into the lug 24, into the cylindrical part 25 of which the hollow cylinder 28 has been inserted.

[0070] Thus, the collar 32 fits into the cylindrical part 25 of the lug 24, between the hollow cylinder 28 and the cylindrical part 25 of the lug 24, the L-shaped lug 21 being held by the tight-fitting insertion of the rod 31 of the connecting piece 29 into the other end of the hollow cylinder 28, thus protruding the lugs 21 and 24 between the lugs 20 of the socket for soldering the cable C to the lugs 21 and 24, when the connector 3 is mounted with the socket 17 assembled.

[0071] Figure 100 represents a connector according to a variant of the first embodiment, in which the connector is an RCA connector 103, which will not be described in detail as it is well known to those skilled in the art. The other characteristics of connector 100 are otherwise identical to those described for connector 1, for example, the body 102, the flange 104, and the ring (not shown), and will not be described again in detail.

[0072] This represents a 200 connector according to another variant of the first embodiment, in which the connector is a TRS jack 203, which will not be described in detail as it is also well known to those skilled in the art. The other characteristics of the 200 connector are otherwise identical to those described for connector 1, for example, the body 202, the flange 204, and the ring (not shown), and will not be described again in detail.

[0073] This represents a 300 connector according to another variant of the first embodiment, in which the connector is a TS 303 jack connector, which will not be described in detail as it is also well known to those skilled in the art. The other characteristics of the 300 connector are otherwise identical to those described for connector 1, for example, the body 302, the flange 304, and the ring (not shown), and will not be described in detail again.

[0074] La represents connector 1 of the with a small diameter C cable.

[0075] Cable C is sandwiched between the lower edge 90 of slot 9 and the lower edge 13 of tab 12.

[0076] In contrast, the one represents connector 1 of the one with a C cable of larger diameter than in.

[0077] Cable C is sandwiched between the lower edge 90 of slot 9 and the lower edge 13 of tab 12.

[0078] It can be seen from these two figures that the invention allows, with a single connector 1 according to the invention, to adapt to different diameters of cable C, by tightening the ring 5 more or less to lower the flange 4 into the body 2 of the connector 1 until the cable C is pressed between the two pointed edges 90 and 13.

[0079] Advantageously, the connector is designed for a preferred cable diameter, for which, when the cable is sandwiched between the lower edge 90 of the slot 9 and the lower edge 13 of the tab 14, the tab is flush with the second end of the body 2b and the ring 5 is also flush with the second end of the body 2b when screwed completely against the flange 4, the height of the tab 12 relative to the base 11 of the flange 4 then corresponding to the height of the ring 5.

[0080] A person skilled in the art will understand that, when the cable diameter is less than the preferred cable diameter, the tab may be under the second end of the body and the ring, when screwed completely against the flange, may be under the second end of the body, while when the cable diameter is greater than the preferred cable diameter, the tab may protrude from the second end of the body and the ring, when screwed completely against the flange, may also protrude from the second end of the body.

[0081] Figures 9 to 11 represent variants of connector 1 shown without the cable to illustrate variants of the lower edges of the tab 12 and the slot 9 which may be considered in a non-limiting manner within the scope of the invention.

[0082] Thus, the lower edges of the tongue 12 and the slot 9 are pointed, with opposite points turned respectively towards the opposite edge of the tongue 12 and towards the first end 2a of the body 2, to wedge the cable and limit its movements as explained in connection with Figures 7 and 8.

[0083] In, the lower edge of the tongue 12 is pointed while the lower edge 90' of the slot 9 is flat.

[0084] In, the lower edge of the 12' tongue is rounded, with concavity opposite to the lower edge 90', while the lower 90' edge of the 9 slot is flat.

[0085] It is understood that the invention is not limited to these illustrations and that any combination of the lower edges of the tab 12 and the slot 9—whether pointed, rounded, or flat—may be considered within the scope of the present invention. Grooves, or more generally any other surface effect, may also be formed on these lower edges of the tab 12 and the slot 9 to further improve cable retention.

[0086] Figures 12 to 14 represent different variants for flange 4.

[0087] La represents flange 4 of connector 1 of the.

[0088] Lare represents a variant of a 4' flange in which the base 11' is longitudinal with a rounded edge 11'a and two straight edges 11'b for its guidance inside the body 2 of the connector 1. The tongue 12', the lower edge 13' and the chamfer 14' are otherwise identical to what has been described for the 4' flange and will therefore not be described again in detail.

[0089] This represents another variant of a 4" flange in which the 11" base is cross-shaped with three rounded edges 11'a, 11''b and 11''c for its guidance inside the body 2 of the connector 1. The 12" tab, the 13" lower edge and the 14" chamfer are otherwise identical to what has been described for the 4" flange and will therefore not be described again in detail.

[0090] These variants illustrate the fact that different shapes can be considered for the base of the flange, provided that they allow the cable to be pressed against the body 2 of connector 1 and guide the flange into the body 2 of connector 1.

[0091] Figures 15 and 16 represent a 400 connector with radial output according to another embodiment.

[0092] The analogous elements to those of the radial output connector carry the same reference number increased by 400.

[0093] The general shape of the body 402 of connector 400 is identical to that of the body 2 of connector 1 and will not be described again. Connector 400 differs from connector 1 in that it has two diametrically opposed radial slots 409a and 409b. Each radial slot 409a, 409b has a pointed bottom 4090.

[0094] The flange 404 therefore has correspondingly two tabs 412a, 412b, diametrically opposed on the base 411 of the flange 404, each tab 412a, 412b having the same shape as the tab 12 of the flange 4 of the connector 1, with a chamfer 414a, 414b and a pointed lower edge 413a, 413b with a point turned upwards of the respective tab 412a, 412b, and will not be described in further detail.

[0095] Ring 405 is also identical to ring 5 of connector 1, with an external thread 415 and a six-sided hole for hex / Allen key, the thread 415 being intended to screw into the tapped hole 410 of the body 402 of connector 400.

[0096] In this embodiment, it is therefore possible via connector 400 to connect two cables C1 and C2, with outputs of the connector diametrically opposed, the base 411 of the flange 404 pressing simultaneously on the two ends of the cables C1 and C2 connected inside the body 402 to the connector 403.

[0097] Figures 17 and 18 represent a 500 connector with radial output according to another embodiment.

[0098] The analogous elements to those of the radial output connector carry the same reference number increased by 500.

[0099] The general shape of the body 502 of connector 500 is identical to that of the body 2 of connector 1 and will not be described again. Connector 500 differs from connector 1 in that it has two slots 509a and 509b forming a non-flat angle with each other. Each radial slot 509a, 509b has a pointed bottom 5090a, 5090b.

[0100] The flange 504 therefore has correspondingly two tabs 512a, 512b, forming the same angle as the slots 509a, 509b on the base 511 of the flange 504, each tab 512a, 512b having the same shape as the tab 12 of the flange 4 of the connector 1, with a chamfer 514a, 514b and a pointed lower edge 513a, 513b with a point turned upwards of the respective tab 512a, 512b, and will not be described in further detail.

[0101] Ring 505 is also identical to ring 5 of connector 1, with an external thread 515 and a six-sided hole for hex / Allen key, the thread 515 being intended to screw into the tapped hole 510 of the body 502 of connector 500.

[0102] In this embodiment, it is therefore possible via connector 500 to connect two cables C1 and C2, with the outputs of the connector forming a non-flat angle, the base 511 of the flange 504 pressing simultaneously on the two ends of the cables C1 and C2 connected inside the body 502 to the connector 503.

[0103] In this embodiment, the internal thread 534, allowing the connector 503 to be screwed to the first end of the body 502, is shown.

[0104] For these last two embodiments, although a DC connection similar to the first embodiment has been shown, it is understood that any of the coaxial connections already mentioned above can also be implemented, without departing from the scope of the present invention.

[0105] Referring to Figures 19 and 20, we can see that a radial output connector 600 has been represented according to another embodiment.

[0106] The connector 603, which screws onto the first end of the body 602, is a DC connector identical to the DC connector described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 and will not be described in further detail here. As with the other embodiments, all previously mentioned connectors, namely DC, TS jack, TRS jack, RCA, or any other coaxial connector (DIN connector, for example), are considered with this embodiment.

[0107] The body 602 of the connector 600 in this embodiment is a hollow cylinder, with a first enlarged end 607a, extending, as in the first embodiment, by a part 606 of lower diameter, with a thread formed at the second end opposite to the first end on the body 602.

[0108] A slot 609 is formed traversing the wall of the body 602, from the second end towards the central part of the body 602, the slot 609 extending along the height direction of the body, corresponding to the direction of the generatrix of the hollow cylindrical body 602.

[0109] The bottom 690 of the slot 609 is, as for other embodiments having a pointed bottom, pointed with a point turned towards the first end of the body 602 carrying the connector 603.

[0110] Slot 609 is configured to receive the C cable.

[0111] A cap 605, having an internal thread 615, is configured to screw onto the body 602, a hole 616 being formed in the center of the cap 605. A chamfer 608b is formed at the end of the skirt of the cap 605, to facilitate, with the chamfer 608a formed between the first end of the body 607a and the central part 606 of the body 602, a gripping of the connector 600 when the cap 605 is screwed onto the body 602, in a manner analogous to the first embodiment.

[0112] The flange 604 is a body 611 of generally cylindrical shape, with a radial projection 612 extending over its entire height, the extremity of the radial projection 612 being rounded such that when the flange 604 is inserted into the body 602, the radial projection 612 closes the slot 609 and extends the lateral shape of the body 602. The lower edge 613 of the radial projection 612 is pointed, with one point turned towards the opposite edge of the radial projection 612.

[0113] Another circular projection 611a is formed at the top of the flange 604, intended to be inserted into the hole 616 formed in the cap 605, so that the cap 605, when screwed onto the thread 610 of the body 602, presses on the flange 604 so that the base of the body 611 of the flange 604, opposite the summit projection 611a, presses on the cable C connected inside the body 602 to the connector 603.

[0114] A knurling is formed on the first end of the body 607a and the skirt 605a of the cap to facilitate tightening / loosening of the cap 605 on the body 602 but also to facilitate the overall gripping of the connector 600.

[0115] Although not described in connection with this embodiment, it is understood that connectors of the type connector 600 could have two slots as in the embodiments of Figures 15 to 18, without departing from the scope of the present invention, the person skilled in the art knowing how to adapt the shape of the connector body and flange accordingly.

[0116] In all embodiments, the body, flange and ring / cap may advantageously have different colors to more easily visually identify a type of connector or cable.
