[0003] The present invention relates to new compositions based on thermoplastic polyamide that are expandable, in particular in injection and extrusion processes, as well as to expanded compositions formed from said compositions and to methods for producing said compositions.

[0005] Various polymer foams or expanded structures are used in particular in the field of sports equipment, personal protective elements, electrical and electronic equipment or in other products for industrial or consumer markets.

Moreover, the maximum expansion temperature of the expandable microspheres is low enough to enable a subsequent expanding process at temperatures which make it possible to limit, or even avoid, yellowing of the thermoplastic polyamide that can occur when the polyamide is subjected to high temperatures.

Claims1. A composition comprising:- at least one thermoplastic polyamide, wherein the average carbon content of the repeating units of said at least one thermoplastic polyamide is greater than or equal to 7;- from 0.1 to 6.0 % by weight of expandable microspheres, based on the total weight of the composition; and- optionally at least one additional thermoplastic polymer selected from polyolefins; wherein the composition has a melt flow index lower than or equal to 150 g / 10 min.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyamide has a number average molecular weight of from 10000 to 50000 g / mol, preferably from 15000 to 45000 g / mol, more preferably from 20000 to 40000 g / mol.

3. The composition of claim 1 or 2, wherein the average carbon content of the repeating units of the at least one thermoplastic polyamide is greater than or equal to 8, preferably greater than or equal to 9, more preferably greater than or equal to 10; and / or wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyamide is selected from PA 11 , PA 12, PA 5.10, PA 6.10, PA 6.12, PA 6.13, PA 10.9, PA 10.14, PA 12.9, and copolymers thereof and mixtures thereof.

4. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 3, having a melt flow index of from 1 to 150 g / 10 min, preferably from 10 to 110 g / 10 min.

5. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 4, comprising the expandable microspheres in an amount of from 0.5 to 5.0 % by weight, preferably from 1.0 to 4.0 % by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

6. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the expandable microspheres have an expansion start temperature greater than or equal to 230°C, preferably of from 235 to 275°C, and / or a maximum expansion temperature lower than or equal to 310°C, preferably of from 260 to 300°C.

The composition of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the at least one additional thermoplastic polymer is a polyethylene and / or an ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer, preferably LDPE and / or an ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer; and / or wherein the at least one additional thermoplastic polymer is present in an amount of from 0 to 6% by weight, in particular from 0.1 to 6 % by weight, preferably from 0.5 to 5 % by weight, more preferably from 1 to 4 % by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

8. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 7, comprising less than or equal to 2 % by weight, preferably less than or equal to 1 % by weight, of LDPE, preferably of polyethylene, more preferably of polyolefin; preferably, the composition is devoid of LDPE, preferably of polyethylene, more preferably of polyolefin.

9. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 8, further comprising at least one compatibilizer, preferably selected from the group consisting of polyolefins functionalized with maleic anhydride and / or glycidyl methacrylate; and / or further comprising at least one reinforcement agent, preferably selected from the group consisting of glass fibers, carbon fibers, basalt fibers, synthetic fibers, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, silicon oxide, ceramics and mixtures thereof; and / or further comprising at least one UV stabilizer and / or UV absorber, preferably selected from the group consisting of phenolic stabilizers, phosphite stabilizers, hindered amine light stabilizers, inorganic stabilizers and combinations thereof.

10. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 9, in the form of pellets or in the form of a powder, preferably in the form of pellets.

11. An expanded composition obtainable from expanding a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 10.

12. The expanded composition of claim 11 , having a melt flow index lower than or equal to 150 g / 10 min, preferably from 1 to 150 g / 10 min, more preferably from 10 to 110 g / 10 min; and / or 16 having a density from 0.4 to 1 .1 g / cm313. An article consisting of an expanded composition according to any one of claims 11 to 12, or comprising at least one element consisting of an expanded composition according to any one of claims 11 to 12, preferably selected from soles of sports shoes, balls, gloves, personal protective equipment, automobile and railway parts, construction parts and parts of electrical and electronic equipment.

14. A method for preparing a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 10, comprising the steps of:- providing the at least one thermoplastic polyamide;- providing the expandable microspheres; and- compounding in an extruder the at least one thermoplastic polyamide and the expandable microspheres; wherein, preferably, the expandable microspheres are introduced into the extruder as a powder consisting of the expandable microspheres.

15. A method for preparing a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 10, comprising the steps of:- providing the at least one thermoplastic polyamide in the form of a powder;- providing the expandable microspheres; and- dry-blending the powder of thermoplastic polyamide and the expandable microspheres.

16. The method of claim 14 or 15, wherein the expandable microspheres are provided in the form of a masterbatch comprising the expandable microspheres and the at least one additional thermoplastic polymer selected from polyolefins.

17. A method for producing an expanded composition according to any one of claims 14 to 16, comprising expanding a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 10 by heating said composition, wherein preferably the expanding step is carried out by injection molding or extrusion, more preferably by injection molding.
