AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing head-mounted display (HMD) devices face challenges in achieving high magnification due to the dense packing of lenses along the optical axis, which limits the ability to increase the focal length and field of view.

Method used

An optical system design that includes an L1 lens, an L2 lens, and transmissive reflective films positioned before and after the L1 lens, allowing light to fold back through the optical path three times, with specific curvature conditions on the L1S1 and L2S2 surfaces to enhance magnification and field of view.

Benefits of technology

The design achieves higher magnification and wider field of view while maintaining a smaller display panel size, improving manufacturability and resolution by optimizing lens curvature and spacing.

Abstract

This optical system converts light from a display panel into light that is substantially parallel to a user's pupil position and forms an image at the retina position when combined with an eyeball. The optical system is provided with an L1 lens, an L2 lens having L2S1 and L2S2 surfaces, and a transmission-reflection film arranged before and after the L1 lens. The transmission-reflection film has an L1S1 surface located closer to the pupil position than the L1 lens and an L1S2 surface located closer to the display panel side than the L1 lens. With respect to a partial curvature κL1S1h of the L1S1 surface in a peripheral section, a partial curvature κL1S2h0 of the L1S2 surface in a central section, and a partial curvature κL1S1h0 of the L1S1 surface in the central section, the following conditions are satisfied: 0 < κL1S1h, κL1S2h0 < 0, and |κL1S1h0| < 0.015 (1 / mm).
