Red mud is composed of a mixture of solid, metallic oxides, primarily aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide (silica, SiO?). It is basic and typically has a pH ranging from 10-12. About 1-2 tons of red mud is produced for every 1 ton of aluminum oxide production. Over 175 million tons of red mud are produced globally each year.

The drilling fluid is then usually circulated downward through the interior of the pipe and upward through the annulus, which is located between the exterior of the pipe and the walls of the wellbore. Casings and casing-casing annuli may become damaged with micro-cracks over time. The use of sealant formulations to repair the damage is needed to maintain the casings and casing-casing annuli for longer lifetimes. The powder was pressed with 20 tons of pressure to a pellet with 31 mm diameter. WDXRF analysis was performed on the sample using the standard-less Omnian 27 method.
