AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing patient interface devices for ophthalmic surgical laser systems face challenges in handling and mounting the lens barrel to the laser delivery head, particularly when dexterity is limited, such as when using gloves, and require precise alignment to avoid eye movement during surgery.

Method used

A patient interface device assembly with a cap-like member that includes a cylindrical cap with longitudinal ribs for easy handling, snap features for attachment, and bayonet fixing slots for secure mounting, allowing the lens barrel to be easily attached to the laser delivery head and coupled to the patient's eye using a suction ring.

Benefits of technology

Facilitates easier and more precise mounting of the lens barrel to the laser delivery head, reducing the risk of misalignment and improving surgical precision by providing tactile feedback for correct installation.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a patient interface device in an ophthalmic surgical laser system for coupling an eye of a patient to the laser system, the patient interface device comprising a lens barrel having a frustoconical housing for coupling to the laser system and a suction ring for coupling to the eye of the patient, the lens barrel and the suction ring are joined together by clamping. A cap is provided for use with the lens barrel as a mounting aid. In a configuration provided to a user, the lens barrel is partially embedded in and engaged with the cap. The cap has a relatively large diameter portion and a plurality of ribs that are easy to handle. The user holds the cap to mount the lens barrel on the laser system, and pulls the cap to unbuckle the cap from the lens barrel. The lens barrel is attached to the laser system using a bayonet fixture that provides haptic feedback to the user.
