The invention describes a warning light for large-area laser safety products such as personal protective equipment, shields, or even large walls and enclosures that generate visible light (approx. 380–780 nm) when struck by invisible laser radiation (approx. 180–380 nm or 780–11,000 nm). The warning light appears as a luminous effect in different colors, as it depends on the laser beam wavelength, the type and structure of the functional pigments, the duration of the radiation, and the beam power. The luminous effect signals the need for action in the presence of directed and stray laser beams. The user or operator within the operating area of an invisible laser is warned of uncontrolled or unintentional exposure to laser radiation by the light emitted by the material struck by the laser, before the laser safety equipment or shielding is damaged or even penetrated. The invention relates to protection against laser beams of all kinds. This is achieved by functional pigments that are applied to materials of all kinds using a binder or incorporated into a base material. The functional surface can be a flat, flexible, or solid coating or be incorporated into a material.
