Abstract
Claims
1. A method for embedding medical additives in a bioabsorbable material, wherein the method comprises chemically reacting one or more functional groups of the bioabsorbable material with one or more medical additives, wherein the bioabsorbable material is configured to be placed in the human body, and the one or more medical additives remain chemically bonded to the foam structure of the bioabsorbable material until the biodegradation of the bioabsorbable material.
2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the bioabsorbable material includes polyurethane.
3. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 2, wherein the bioabsorbable material is a reaction product of a polyol and an isocyanate.
4. The method according to claim 3, wherein one or more of the medical additives react with the polyol.
5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the bioabsorbable material is configured to be used in conjunction with a surgical staple cartridge configured to repair one or more parts of the human body.
6. The method according to claim 1, wherein one or more of the functional groups include an isocyanate group.
7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the one or more medical additives include one or more polydrugs.
8. The method according to claim 7, wherein chemically reacting one or more functional groups of the bioabsorbable material with one or more medical additives includes end-capping the isocyanate group with one or more polydrugs.
9. The method according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the polydrug treats one or more of the following: pain, wound healing, tissue growth, infection reduction, or a combination thereof.
10. The method according to claim 1, wherein one or more of the functional groups include a polyol hydroxyl group.
11. The method according to claim 10, wherein chemically reacting one or more functional groups of the bioabsorbable material with one or more medical additives includes functionalizing the polyol hydroxyl group with one or more medical additives.
12. The method according to claim 1, wherein the one or more medical additives include one or more drugs that treat pain, wound healing, tissue growth, infection reduction, or a combination thereof.
13. The method according to claim 1, wherein chemically reacting one or more functional groups of the bioabsorbable material with one or more medical additives includes modifying the one or more functional groups via one or more reactive surfactants.
14. The method according to claim 1, wherein one or more functional groups of the bioabsorbable material are chemically reacted with one or more medical additives, thereby enabling a stable release profile of the one or more medical additives from the foam structure during the biodegradation of the bioabsorbable material.
15. The method according to claim 1, wherein the one or more medical additives treat pain, wound healing, tissue growth, infection reduction, or a combination thereof.
