AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current methods for detecting gastrointestinal pathogens such as Adenovirus, Astrovirus, Rotavirus, and bacterial pathogens like Salmonella and Campylobacter are not sensitive or specific enough, often resulting in cross-reactivity and inability to detect multiple pathogens in a single assay.

Method used

A multiplex qPCR assay is developed that uses specific Primer Pair Sets to amplify targeted nucleic acids from various pathogens, allowing for simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens in a single sample. The assay includes primer pairs and probes specifically designed for each pathogen to prevent cross-reactivity.

Benefits of technology

The multiplex qPCR assay achieves sensitive and specific detection of multiple gastrointestinal pathogens in a single assay, improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in clinical and public health settings.

Abstract

Described herein are compositions, methods, and kits for detecting diarrhea causing pathogens from patient, food, or environmental samples. One embodiment described herein is primer pairs and probes for multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based assays for the detection of gastrointestinal pathogens, such as Adenovirus, Astrovirus, Rotavirus, Norovirus, Sapovirus, Campylobacter species, Clostridium difficile, Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), Shigella / Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), E. coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella species, Yersinia enterocolitica, Vibrio species, Cryptosporidium species, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia intestinalis, or Giardia lamblia. Other embodiments include methods and kits for detecting gastrointestinal pathogens.
