Abstract

Methods (450, 550) and devices (110, 120) in a wireless communication system (100) enable interference mitigation using a channel state information (CSI) report including CSIs for each of one or more power configurations. A user equipment (110) receives (454) a CSI report configuration that specifies CSI reference signal resources for channel measurement, a codebook, and one or more power configurations. The power configuration indicates power level (s) for one or more groups of beams. Upon receiving (458) CSI reference signals on the configured CSI reference signal resources, the UE generates and transmits (460) a CSI report including CSI for each of the power configurations.

Description

METHODS AND DEVICES PROVIDING CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION FEEDBACK FOR INTERFERENCE MITIGATION

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] This document generally describes methods and devices operating in wireless communication systems described in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) communication systems, such as (but not limited to) the ones described in 5G standard documents. In particular, this document focusses on channel state information (CSI) reporting.BACKGROUND

[0003] This background description is provided for the purpose of generally presenting the context of various embodiments later described, and the technical problems. Work of the presently named inventors, to the extent it is described in this background section, as well as aspects of the description that may not otherwise qualify as prior art at the time of filing, are neither expressly nor impliedly admitted as prior art against the present disclosure.

[0004] In wireless communications, CSI characterizes behavior and / or quality of a wireless communication channel between a transmitter (e.g., a base station (BS) ) and a receiver (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) . The receiver reports CSI factors based on measuring reference signals (e.g., CSI reference signals (CSI-RSs) ) . A CSI report may include signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, fading, interference, and more. For a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system, the CSI report may provide, to a network entity (NE, which is considered in this document to be any part or parts of the core network (CN) , BS, or a combination of CN and BS) information related to the best digital precoder for the UE.

[0005] Traditionally, the NE configures the UE for a CSI report using radio resource control (RRC) signaling (e.g., a CSI-ReportConfig message) . The NE indicates CSI-RS resources to be used by the UE as channel measurement resources (CMRs) and, optionally, also some CSI interference measurement (CSI-IM) resources (IMRs) to be used by the UE to measure interference.

[0006] Based on the configured CMRs and possibly also IMRs, the UE assesses the CSI, by evaluating one or more of a rank indicator (RI) , a precoder matrix indicator (PMI) , a channel quality indicator (CQI) and a layer indicator (LI) . The RI and the PMI indicate the digital precoder, the CQI indicates the signal-to-interference plus noise (SINR) status thereby assisting the NE in selecting the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , and the LI identifies the strongest layer for the precoder indicated by the RI and the PMI.

[0007] Different beams from one cell may cause different interference to the neighbor UEs in the cell (i.e., UEs other than the targeted UE) and NEs in neighbor cells, because different beams propagate in different directions. The conventional CSI reporting does not enable the NE to select the precoder taking into consideration the different interference for different beams.

[0008] Moreover, the interference impact of different beams on the neighbor cell UEs and / or NEs in neighbor cells may change dynamically. For example, the interference impact may depend on the active UEs, and scheduled communications. Conventional NEs are not able to select the precoder taking into consideration that the interference status changes dynamically.SUMMARY

[0009] The CSI enables an NE of a MIMO communication system to select a precoder (beam) for communications with a specific UE. NE beams in different directions cause different interference to neighbor UEs in the same cell with the specific UE and / or NEs in neighbor cells of this cell. Unlike the conventional CSI reporting, CSI reporting implemented by various embodiments enable the NE to select the precoder taking into consideration the different interference from the different beams and the dynamic changes impacting the interference (thereby mitigating the interference) . The specific UE is configured to report CSIs for one or more power configurations for the beams, and each of the CSIs (i.e., CSI sub-reports) may correspond to one of the power configurations, respectively.

[0010] The power configuration specifies power level for groups of beams (or beam groups) . A group of beams may be defined in different ways. In some embodiments, the power configuration indicates whether a group of beams can be  selected. In other embodiments, the power configuration specifies power scaling factors associated with beam groups, respectively. In one example, the power configuration specifies rank-specific power scaling factors for beam groups. In another example, the power configuration specifies a rank common power scaling factor. In yet another example, the power configuration specifies a power scaling factor for each beam group and a reference number of layers. In some embodiments, power borrowing among layers is enabled in the context of power scaling.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0022] Methods and devices described in this section embody techniques related to CSI measurement and reporting (i.e., feedback) for interference suppression. The embodiment descriptions in this section refer to the accompanying drawings. The same reference numbers in different drawings identify the same or similar elements. The detailed descriptions do preclude other embodiments within the scope of the appended claims. The embodiments are not limited to the described configurations but may be extended to other arrangements.

[0023] Reference throughout this section to “one embodiment” or “an embodiment” means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment. Thus, the appearances of the phrases “in one embodiment” or “in an embodiment” in various places throughout the specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment. Further, the particular features, structures or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments.

[0024] Prior to discussing the various methods for CSI reporting enabling interference suppression, these methods may be implemented in a wireless communication system 100 schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. The wireless communication system 100 includes a UE 110 and an NE 120, which are able and configured to perform methods according to various embodiments. The UE 110 and the NE 120 (only one of each is shown for simplicity, but one skilled in the art would understand that many such elements may be present) communicate wirelessly through a wireless communication channel 101, which generally represents both uplink signals (from the UE to the NE) and downlink signals (from the NE to the UE) . Structural representations of the UE 110 and the NE 120 are illustrative and not intended to be limiting (i.e., the UE may include additional functions and hardware that are omitted in Fig. 1 for maintaining focus on the relevant components) .

[0025] The UE 110 may be any user computing device, for example, a smartphone. UE includes antennas (not labeled but suggested on top of box 110) connected to a radio  frequency (RF) front end 111, and at least one transceiver. The UE may include plural transceivers such as an LTE transceiver 112, a 5G NR transceiver 113, and / or another transceiver 114, employed depending on the radio access technology employed in different scenarios. Although UE 110 in Fig. 1 is illustrated as including three transceivers, one skilled in the art would understand that, while at least one transceiver is present, more than one transceiver being present is optional. The antennas, the RF front end 111 and the respective transceiver can be tuned to one or more frequency bands (e.g., subcarriers) , for example, as defined by 3GPP LTE, 5G NR, and 6G communication standards. The UE 110 also includes one or more precoders 115, one or more processor (s) 116, and computer-readable storage media (CRSM) 117. The processor (s) 116 may be (a) single or (a) multiple-core processor (s) , and CRSM 117 includes any suitable memory / storage other than propagating signals. For example, the memory / storage may include a random access memory (RAM) , which may be static (SRAM) , dynamic (DRAM) or non-volatile (NVRAM) , a read only memory (ROM) , and / or a flash memory. The CRSM 117 stores device data 118 necessary for UE’s communications and a CSI reporting manager 119. The CSI reporting manager 119 is configured to implement the CSI reporting according to various methods.

[0026] The NE 120 may be a BS or any device of the radio access network (RAN) , the core network (CN) or a combination of them. Thus, the NE 120 may provide the functionality of a gNB (e.g., a 5G or 6G base station) or perform various other CN functions. The NE 120’s functionality may be distributed across multiple entities (e.g., a central unit, a distributed unit, DU, and a radio unit, RU (not shown) if the NE is a distributed BS) . The NE 120 includes one or more antennas (not labeled but suggested on top of box 120) , an RF front end 121, and a transceiver 122 for communicating with UE 110 and other UEs and NEs. The NE 120’s antennas, the RF front end 121 and the transceiver 122 can be tuned to send and receive signals in one or more frequency bands (e.g., subcarriers) , for example, as defined by 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) , 5G new radio (NR) , and 6G communication standards) .

[0027] The NE 120 further includes one or more processors 123 and CRSM 124. The processor (s) 123 can include one or more single or multiple-core processors. The CRSM 124 may include any suitable memory / storage except propagating signals. For  example, memory / storage can include a RAM, an SRAM, a DRAM, an NVRAM, a ROM, and / or a flash memory. The CRSM 124 stores device data 125, which includes network scheduling data, radio resource management data, applications, and / or an operating system, which are executable by processor (s) 123 to enable wireless communication 101 with UE 110 as well as with other NEs and UEs.

[0028] The CRSM 124 also stores a CSI configuration manager 126. The CSI configuration manager 126 causes NE 120 to configure the UE 110 for a CSI report that enables the NE to take into consideration different beam interferences, as discussed later. The CSI configuration manager 226 configures the UE to provide CSI feedback by sending a control message via channel 101. The CSI configuration manager 226 may instruct the UE to use one or more of the available CSI report sub-configurations.

[0029] Currently, the NE can transmit the CSI-RS from up to 32 antenna ports (referred simply as ports in this document) by one CSI-RS resource and from up to 128 ports by multiple CSI-RS resources. The NE may configure the UE to measure and report CSI based on a codebook (e.g., Type 1 single-panel codebook or Type 1 multi-panel codebook as defined in as defined in 3GPP technical specification (TS) 38.214) and a set of CSI-RS resource (s) for channel measurement (i.e., channel measurement resources (CMRs) ) . For each polarization from one panel, the UE may be able to select a beam for one layer as shown in Fig. 2A. Fig. 2A is a two dimensional representation 230 of NE beams. The total number of beams is determined by the number of horizontal antenna ports N1, number of vertical antenna ports N2, oversampling factor for horizontal beams O1 and oversampling factor for vertical beams O2. The value of N1, N2, O1 and O2 are typically configured by the NE via RRC signaling (e.g., a codebook configuration) . These antenna ports are logical antenna ports used only for quantizing the CSI (that is, a different physical antenna structure may be used for downlink transmission) . The beam 232 is a reported beam for layer 1 and the beam 234 is a reported beam for layer 2. More beams and corresponding layers may be selected.

[0030] For Type1 single-panel codebook with more than 32 ports, the NE can configure two schemes for the CSI feedback: scheme A and scheme B. According to scheme A, for each layer, the UE reports the precoder indicating the antenna co-phasing between two polarizations, where precoder for a layer can be as follows:

[0031] where vl, m indicates the beam for each polarization (which may be generated according as described in 3GPP TS 38.214) , l=0, 1, …, N1O1-1, m=0, 1, …, N2O2-1, and indicates the antenna co-phasing between two polarizations. For example, if n=0, 1, 2, 3 then antenna co-phasing is

[0032] The UE reports a first PMI information indicating the l and m for each layer for the wideband precoder, and a second PMI information for each subband indicating value of n for each layer for the corresponding subband. The reported precoder and the precoder used for CQI calculation should be normalized. Thus, for NL layers, the precoder for each layer may be multiplied by In scheme B, the UE reports NL wideband beam index for NL layers based on the beams in W1, where each beam index corresponds to one layer. A beam index indicates the value of (l, m) in equation (3) .

[0033] For each subband, the UE calculates the co-phasing between two polarizations, and compresses the polarizations from N3 subbands into Mv coefficients based on an Mv frequency domain (FD) basis. Then for one layer the precoder for all the subbands can be generated as

[0034] where is a 2 by Mv matrix, and WFD is a Mv by N3 matrix indicating Mv FD basis from a set of FD basis (e.g., a DFT basis as defined in 3GPP TS 38.214) based on the number of subbands. The UE can apply a time offset to keep the first coefficient from the first FD basis. Thus, the UE reports a subset of or all the coefficients from the 2 by Mv matrix and Mv-1 FD basis. The reported precoder and the precoder used for CQI calculation may be normalized by multiplying them with where is the NL is the number of layers.

[0035] For Type1 multi-panel codebook, for each layer, the UE reports the precoder indicating the antenna co-phasing between two polarizations and antenna co-phasing between two panels. For example, in case of a two-panel based codebook, the precoder for a layer may be:

[0036] The reported precoder and the precoder used for CQI calculation should be normalized. The reported precoder and the precoder used for CQI calculation may be normalized by multiplying them with where Ng is the number of panels.

[0037] For a Type2 / eType2 codebook, the UE reports the precoder based on an approach similar to scheme B for Type1 codebook, where the UE can report more than one beams for each layer in each CSI.

[0038] For an Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning (AI / ML) based CSI report, the UE may report the CSI for future slot (s) based on a codebook (e.g., eType2 codebook for PMI prediction) and / or based on AI / ML based CSI compression.

[0039] As already mentioned, different beams from one cell may cause different interference to the UEs in a neighbor cell, because different beams have different directions. Moreover, different beams from one cell may cause different interference to the neighbor cell NEs. Fig. 2B illustrates a two dimensional representation of beams 240 similar to the one in Fig. 2A. Areas 242, 244, and 246 represent groups of beams causing strong interference to neighbor cells and area 248 represents a group of beams causing medium interference to neighbor cells. Additionally, the interference status for different beams may be dynamically changed. The interference impact on neighbor cell UEs may depend on the scheduled UEs. The interference caused by different beams to NEs in neighboring cells may also change dynamically.

[0040] Receiving the CSI in association with one or more power configurations (which specify the power level for at least one beam group) enables the NE to use a precoder selection scheme that mitigates the dynamic interference. Various methods described below enable interference mitigation because the CSI report based on a  codebook, e.g., Type1 or Type2 or eType2 codebook or AI / ML based CSI compression and multiple CSI-RS resources specifies the power configuration for each beam, and multiple CSI feedback corresponding to different power configuration for each beam.

[0041] Fig. 3 is a signal diagram illustrating a procedure 350 for CSI reporting enabling interference mitigation according to an embodiment. The UE 110 may optionally (as suggested by the dashed line used to draw the arrow) report 352 UE capability information specifying the UE supported configurations for the CSI feedback based on beam group specific power configuration (s) . The UE capability information includes one or more of: (i) supported beam group granularity for the power configuration; (ii) supported power configuration scheme, e.g., single-bit configuration or multi-bit configuration, for each beam group; (iii) supported codebook types; (iv) supported antenna ports configuration for CSI feedback (e.g., supported number of antenna ports) , (v) supported (N1, N2) , etc.

[0042] Based on the UE capability information if available or, otherwise, on predefined default settings, the NE 120 transmits 354 a control message including a CSI report configuration specifying a set of CSI-RS (and optionally CSI-RS / CSI-IM) resources for channel (and interference) measurement, a codebook, and one or more power configurations specifying a power level for at least one beam group. The CSI-RS resources may be from different antenna ports configuration for a codebook, for example: a Type1 single-panel codebook, a Type1 multi-panel codebook, a Type2 or enhanced Type2 (eType2) codebook, a codebook for AI / ML based prediction or an AI / ML based CSI compression and / or prediction, and one or multiple power configurations for at least one beam group corresponding to the codebook. For Type1 codebook, the NE may further configure the codebook scheme based on the scheme A or the scheme B. The NE may optionally configure via the CSI report configuration one or a combination of the following parameters: (a) a list of CSI-RS resources for interference measurement, (b) a list of CSI-IM resources for interference measurement, or (c) frequency domain granularity for CSI report (e.g., whether to report wideband CSI or subband CSI and / or the subband size) . The control message may be a radio resource control (RRC) message (e.g., an RRCReconfiguration or a CSI-ReportConfig  message) . The NE may configure a list of CSI report sub-configuration and configure each power configuration in each CSI report sub-configuration.

[0043] In some embodiments, for a semi-persistent CSI report or an aperiodic CSI report, the NE 120 then transmits 356 a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) or downlink control information (DCI) for activating or triggering the CSI report. Additionally, or alternatively, the NE may transmit MAC CE or DCI activating or triggering the CSI-RS (and optionally CSI-IM) for semi-persistent CSI-RS or aperiodic CSI-RS.

[0044] The NE 120 transmits 358, to the UE 110, CSI-RSs on the configured CSI-RS (and optionally CSI-IM) resources. The UE may determine whether to report the CSI for the received signals based on whether a scheduling offset meets the minimum processing delay requirement and a central processing unit (CPU) occupancy rule. The UE then transmits 360 the CSI report generated according to the CSI report configuration to reflect channel quality based on measurements of the received CSI-RSs. The CSI report includes one or multiple CSIs (i.e., CSI factors associated with one or more beams) corresponding to one or multiple power configurations. The UE may transmit the CSI report according to the CSI report configuration using an uplink channel (e.g., a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) or a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) ) .

[0045] Fig. 4 is a flow chart of a UE method 450 related to a CSI report enabling interference mitigation according to an embodiment. This UE method 450 covers the UE 110’s behavior illustrated in Fig. 3. The UE may optionally (as suggested by the dashed line used to draw box) transmit 452, to the network, the UE capability information about supported configurations for a CSI report based on beam group specific power configurations. Note that, the term “network” is used in this context to indicate that the UE may communicate (i.e., transmit or receive signals) with different NEs of the network (i.e., RAN or CN) . For example, the UE may transmit this UE capability to a gatekeeper NE when requesting access (i.e., seeking to establish network connection) ; the gatekeeper NE may then convey the UE capability to the NE configuring the UE for CSI report, or store information on the UE capability in another NE from where the NE configuring the UE for CSI report retrieves it. Thus, although the  method 450 covers the UE’s behavior during the procedure illustrated in Fig. 3, the method is not limited to actions and actors illustrated in Fig. 3.

[0046] Returning now to Fig. 4, the UE receives 454 a control message including a CSI report configuration specifying a set of CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, a codebook, and one or more power configurations for at least one beam group. Optionally, the control message may also specify the CSI-RS / CSI-IM resource for interference measurement. Further, the UE may receive 456 a MAC CE or DCI triggering the CSI report and / or monitoring the configured CSI-RS resources for channel measurement and / or the configured CSI-RS / CSI-IM resource for interference measurement.

[0047] The UE then receives 458 CSI-RSs on the configured CSI-RS (and, optionally, CSI-IM) resources for channel measurement (and, optionally, the configured CSI-RS / CSI-IM resource for interference measurement) . The UE then transmits 460 the CSI report generated according to the CSI report configuration, the CSI report including a specific CSI corresponding to the one or more power configurations for the at least one beam group.

[0048] Fig. 5 is a flow chart of an NE method 550 related to a CSI report enabling interference mitigation according to an embodiment. This NE method 550 covers the NE 120’s behavior illustrated in Fig. 3. The NE may optionally receive 552 (or alternatively acquire as discussed above) the UE capability information about supported configurations for a CSI report based on beam group specific power configuration (s) . The NE transmits 554 a control message including a CSI report configuration specifying a set of CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, a codebook, and one or more power configurations for at least one beam group. Optionally, the control message may also specify the CSI-RS / CSI-IM resource for interference measurement.

[0049] Further, the NE may transmit 556 a MAC CE or DCI triggering the CSI report and / or the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement and / or the CSI-RS / CSI-IM resource for interference measurement.

[0050] The NE then transmits 558 reference signals on the configured CSI-RS resources for channel measurement and / or the CSI-RS / CSI-IM resource for interference measurement. In response, the NE receives 560 the CSI report generated  according to the CSI report configuration and including one or more multiple CSIs corresponding to the one or more power configurations for the at least one beam group (i.e., including a specific CSI for each of the one or more power configurations) .

[0051] The control message may be RRC signaling such as an RRC reconfiguration message from a gNB to the UE, or a system information block (SIB) . The SIB may be an SIB already defined in 3GPP technical specifications (e.g., SIB1) or a new SIB (e.g., SIB J, where J is an integer above 21) . As already mentioned, the NE may receive the UE capability from the UE, from a core network function (e.g., Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) ) , or another NE.

[0052] The NE may configure the power level (s) using a codebook subset restriction (CBSR) , with information for each group of beams. A group of beams may include X1X2 beams. For example, the beams in a beam group g (with g starting from 0) may include the beams with X1 adjacent horizontal indexes (e.g., l= {0, 1, …, X1-1} + (g mod G1) X1 or ) and with X2 adjacent vertical indexes (e.g.,  or m= {0, 1, …, X2-1} + (g mod G2) X2, where G1 = N1O1  / X1 and G2 = N2O2  / X2) . The NE may configure the power level, e.g., CBSR, for the G=G1G2 groups of beams.

[0053] In some embodiments, the value of X1 and X2 may be pre-defined (e.g., X1=4 and X2=4) . In some other embodiments, the NE and UE may determine the value of X1 and X2 based on at least one of: N1, N2, O1, O2. For example, in one embodiment, X1=O1 and X2=O2 when 2N1N2 > 32 and X1=1 and X2 = 1 when 2N1N2 <= 32. The NE and UE may further determine the values of X1 and X2 based on the power configuration scheme. In some other embodiments, the value of X1 and X2 may be configured by the NE.In some other embodiments, the values of X1 and X2 may be reported by the UE. Fig. 6 illustrates beam grouping 660 when X1=O1 and X2=O2 for 64 ports codebook. Group 662 corresponds to g=0, group 664 to g=1 and group 666 to g=8.

[0054] A first option for configuring power for each power beam group is indicating whether one beam group can be selected or not for CSI reporting. In some embodiments, the NE configures whether each beam group can be selected or not for CSI reporting. For example, the NE may configure whether a combination or a set of  beam groups can be selected or not for CSI reporting. The NE may provide the configuration by G bits CBSR based on at least one of the configured (N1, N2, O1, O2) , where a bit x may indicate whether the beam group x can be selected or not for CSI feedback (i.e., CSI for the beam group x to be reported) . The NE may provide the power configuration using RRC signaling, MAC CE, or DCI. The UE is able to report the precoder only for beams from the beam groups that can be selected for CSI reporting. When the NE configures the UE to report multiple CSIs, e.g., multiple CSI-RS resource indicator (CRIs) , corresponding to different CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, it may configure a common or separate power configuration, e.g., CBSR, for different CSI-RS resources.

[0055] In some embodiments, the NE may configure the common G bits CBSR for all number of layers, e.g., all possible RIs. Then, when calculating the RI / PMI / CQI, the UE selects the precoder based on the beams in the beam group that can be selected for CSI feedback.

[0056] In some other embodiments, the transmission power for each beam is reduced based on the normalization to support a high rank transmission. For example, the transmission power is scaled by the number of layers. The NE may configure the CBSR for different number of layers. Then, when calculating the RI / PMI / CQI for the configured number of layers, the UE applies a corresponding power scaling factor for the respective beam (s) for each precoder.

[0057] For example, the NE may configure separate CBSR for different number of layers (e.g., a first number of layers corresponds to a first CBSR, a second number of layers corresponds to a second CBSR, etc. ) . In another example, the NE may configure separate CBSR for different sets of number of layers (e.g., a first set of CBSR for CSI based on 1-4 layers and a second set of CBSR for CSI based on 5-8 layers) . In yet another example, the NE may configure a threshold for the target applicable number of layers for the CBSR. Alternatively, the target applicable number of layers may be predefined. Thus, the configured CBSR may be applicable for the precoder selection with a number of layers smaller than or equal to a threshold pre-defined or configured by the NE.

[0058] In some embodiments, the NE configures the CBSR for a high rank precoder based on the CBSR configuration for a low rank precoder. Thus, the NE configures whether the beam groups that cannot be selected for the low rank transmission can be selected for the high rank transmission. Alternatively, the UE derives the beam groups which can be selected for the high rank transmission based on the beam groups that cannot be selected for the low rank transmission. In another example, the UE determines the beam groups which can be selected for the high rank transmission, as the beam groups that cannot be selected for the low rank transmission. The NE and UE may determine the beam groups that can be selected for the low rank transmission are always allowed for the high rank transmission. Fig. 7 illustrates one example for the rank-specific CBSR configuration, with 4 vertical x 4 horizontal groups of beams 772 in the middle of the horizontal range allowed for precoder selection for rank 5-8 but not allowed for precoder selection for rank 1-4, three groups next 772 and 774 adjacent to these middle groups of beams including beams allowed for precoder selection for all the ranks, and the rest of groups not allowed for precoder selection for any rank.

[0059] In some embodiments, when generating a CSI report based on AI / ML based CSI compression, the UE reports the precoder (s) which is / are not highly correlated to the beams in a beam group that cannot be selected for CSI reporting. For example, the UE may refrain from reporting the precoder (s) which are highly correlated to the beams in a beam group that cannot be selected for CSI reporting. The UE may determine the correlation based on cosine similarity (CS) or square CS (SCS) between the reported precoder for each layer and the beam. If the CS or SCS is below a threshold, the UE determines that the precoder is not highly correlated to the beam; otherwise, the UE determines that the precoder is highly correlated to the beam. The threshold may be predefined or configured by the NE. For example, the UE may calculate the CS and SCS between layer i of the precoder and beam j as follows:

[0060] where W (i) indicates the layer / column i of the precoder and B (j) indicates the beam j.

[0061] The precoder may be the measured precoder based on the CSI-RS (e.g., the precoder before CSI compression) . Alternatively, the precoder may be the re-constructed precoder based on a reference CSI reconstruction model and the reported compressed precoder based on AI / ML. The reference CSI reconstruction model may be pre-defined or configured by the NE.

[0062] In some embodiments, the UE reports the UE capability information indicating whether the UE supports AI / ML based CSI compression with CBSR configured. In some other embodiments, the UE reports a set of beam index (es) indicating W1 and reports compressed CSI based on the beam combining matrix W2, where the UE selects the beam index (es) based on the CBSR (i.e., based on the allowed beam group (s) configured by the CBSR) .

[0063] In some other embodiments, when configuring a CSI report based on AI / ML based CSI prediction for multiple future slots, the NE configures a common CBSR for all the future slots or separate CBSRs for different future slots. Then, when calculating the CSI corresponding to a future slot, the UE reports the CSI based on the corresponding CBSR.

[0064] A second option for configuring power for each power beam group is to configure a power scaling factor for each group. For example, the NE may provide the power configuration using a G*M bits CBSR based on at least one of the configured (N1, N2, O1, O2) , where each M bits indicates the power scaling factor for one of the beam groups for CSI feedback. The NE may provide the power configuration by RRC signaling, MAC CE, or DCI. The UE then calculates the RI / PMI / CQI / LI based on the power scaling factor for the beam group (s) . The value of M may be pre-defined, e.g., M=2 or 3, or configured by the NE, or reported by the UE via UE capability information. When the NE configures the UE to report multiple CSIs, e.g., multiple CSI-RS resource indicator (CRIs) , corresponding to different CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, it may a common or separate power configuration, e.g., CBSR, for different CSI-RS resources.

[0065] In one example, each state of the M bits may indicate a scaling factor for each beam in the beam group. In some embodiments, the NE indicates a linear scaling factor. The scaling factor may be in the range of [0, 1] , where ‘0’ may indicate the beam cannot be selected. In some other embodiments, the NE indicates the scaling factor in decibels (dB) . The scaling factor smaller than or equal to 0 corresponds to a beam that cannot be selected. The NE may configure the scaling factor based on a uniform or a non-uniform quantization.

[0066] In some embodiments, when generating a CSI report based on AI / ML based CSI compression, the UE reports the precoder based on the average, the minimum, or the maximum power scaling factor for the beam (s) that are highly correlated. The UE may determine the correlation based on cosine similarity (CS) or square CS (SCS) between the reported precoder for each layer and the beam. If the CS or SCS is below a threshold, the UE determines the precoder is not highly correlated to the beam; otherwise, the UE determines the precoder is highly correlated to the beam. The threshold may be predefined or configured by the NE.

[0067] The precoder may be the measured precoder based on the CSI-RS (e.g., the precoder before CSI compression) . Alternatively, the precoder may be a re-constructed precoder based on a reference CSI reconstruction model and the reported compressed precoder based on AI / ML. The reference CSI reconstruction model may be pre-defined or configured by the NE.

[0068] In some embodiments, the UE indicates via the UE capability information whether it supports AI / ML based CSI compression with power scaling factor for each beam group configured. In other embodiments, the UE reports a set of beam index (es) indicating W1 and compressed CSI based on the beam combining matrix W2, the UE selecting the coefficient for W2 based on the power scaling factor for each beam group (i.e., based on the power scaling factor for the reported beam index (es) ) .

[0069] In some embodiments, when configuring a CSI report based on AI / ML based CSI prediction for multiple future slots, the NE configures a common power configuration for the beam groups for all the future slots or separate power configurations for the beam groups for different future slots. Then, when calculating the  CSI corresponding to a future slot, the UE reports the CSI based on the corresponding power configuration for the beam groups.

[0070] In some embodiments, the power configurations specify rank-specific power scaling factors for each beam group. In an embodiment, the NE configures the rank-specific power scaling factor (e.g., the G*M bits CBSR) for two or more number of layers. Then when calculating the RI / PMI / CQI for a number of layers, the UE applies the configured power scaling factor for the corresponding beam (s) . For example, the NE may configure separate CBSR for different number of layers (i.e., each number of layers corresponds to a CBSR) . In another example, the NE may configure separate CBSR for different sets of number of layers (e.g., a first set of CBSR for CSI based on 1-4 layers and a second set of CBSR for CSI based on 5-8 layers) . In yet another example, the NE configures a threshold for the target applicable number of layers for the CBSR. Thus, the configured CBSR may be applicable for the precoder selection with a number of layers smaller than or equal to the threshold.

[0071] In some embodiments, the NE configures the CBSR for high rank based on the CBSR configuration for low rank. Thus, the NE configures differential power scaling factor (s) for the CBSR for high rank relative to the CBSR for low rank. In some other embodiments, the NE configures the CBSR for low rank based on the CBSR configuration for high rank. Thus, the NE configures differential power scaling factor (s) for the CBSR for low rank relative to the CBSR for high rank.

[0072] The reported precoder and the precoder used for CQI calculation may be normalized. Thus, for NL layers, the precoder for each layer may be multiplied by

[0073] In some embodiments, the power configurations specify a rank common power scaling factor. In one embodiment, the NE configures the common power scaling factor (e.g., the G*M bits CBSR) for all the layers. Then, when calculating the RI / PMI / CQI, the UE applies the configured power scaling factor for the corresponding beam (s) .

[0074] In some embodiments, the power configurations specify a power scaling factor for each beam group and a reference number of layers. In one embodiment, the  NE configures the power scaling factor (e.g., the G*M bits CBSR) for a reference number of layers (e.g., 1 layer) . Then, when calculating the RI / PMI / CQI for a number of layers, the UE applies the configured power scaling factor for the corresponding beam (s) based on additional scaling based on the number of layers and the reference number of layers.

[0075] For example, if the linear power scaling factor is configured, the UE may determine the power scaling factor for a beam corresponding to a precoder with NL layers as where s is the configured linear power scaling factor, Nref is the reference number of layers, which may be pre-defined (e.g., 1) or configured by the NE.The reported precoder and the precoder used for CQI calculation may be normalized. Thus, for NL layers, the precoder for each layer should be multiplied by

[0076] Some embodiments use a power borrowing mechanism. In an embodiment, for rank>1 precoder, the UE may apply the power borrowing among layers if a first subset of layers applies power scaling according to the power scaling factor configured for each beam group. The UE may then boost power for a second set of layers without power scaling based on the power scaling factor applied to the first set of layers with power scaling. Fig. 8 illustrates a scenario 880 for power borrowing among layers. In Fig. 8, the leftmost histogram 882 illustrates power on Layer 1 and Layer 2 before power scaling, the middle histogram 884 illustrates power on Layer 1 and Layer 2 after power scaling is applied to Layer 1, and the rightmost histogram 886 illustrates power on Layer 1 and Layer 2 when an amount of the power reduced by applying a scaling factor to Layer 1 boosts power of Layer 2 (i.e., inter-layer power borrowing) .

[0077] Although Fig. 8 shows one scaled power Layer 1 and one boosted power Layer 2, the power may be scaled for a first set of layers and boosted for a second set of layers. In some embodiments, the UE may apply equal power boosting for the second set of layers. For example, the power boosting factor for each layer in the second set of layers is where U1 indicates the layers for the first set, sj indicates the power scaling factor for layer j, and L2 indicates the number of layers in the  second set. In some other embodiments, the UE may determine the power boosting factor for each layer based on a threshold T, which may be pre-defined, configured by the NE, or reported by the UE. The threshold may be common or distinct for different beams or beam groups. Then the power boosting factor for each layer in the second set of layers may be

[0078] In some other embodiments, the UE applies the power boosting for one or a subset of layers among a set of layers. For example, the UE applies the power boosting for a first layer among the set of layers. In another example, the UE reports the power boosting factor for each layer in a second set of layers.

[0079] In some other embodiments, the NE configures whether the power boosting for the second set of layers is enabled or not. In one example, the NE configures whether the power boosting is enabled or not per beam group (e.g., one of the states of the CBSR for a beam group indicates the power boosting is enabled) . Then, if at least one or all of the second set of layers is based on the beam from the beam group with power boosting enabled, the UE may apply the power borrowing; otherwise, the UE does not apply the power borrowing. The UE may indicate in the UE capability information whether it supports power boosting for the second set of layers.

[0080] In some embodiments, the power configurations are configurable. In an embodiment, the NE configures whether the power scaling factor (e.g., CBSR indicating the power scaling factor for each beam group) is based on indicating whether a beam group can be selected for CSI reporting or on configuring power scaling factors for each beam group. The NE may configure the number of bits for CBSR for each beam group. The UE may report the UE capability indicating the supported power scaling configuration.

[0081] In one example, the UE may report the UE capability indicating whether it supports more than one bit indication for each beam group for the CBSR. In some embodiments, the power configuration indicates power scaling factors for each beam group and for low rank operation (e.g., for a number of layers smaller than a threshold) , and indicates whether a beam group can be selected for CSI reporting for high rank  operation (e.g., for number of layers above the threshold) . The threshold may be pre-defined (e.g., 1) , configured by the NEs or reported by the UE.

[0082] In some other embodiments, the NE configures different power configuration schemes (e.g., (1) based on indicating whether a beam group can be selected for CSI reporting or (2) based on configuring power scaling factors for each beam group) for different codebook types (e.g., Type1 single-panel codebook, Type1 multi-panel codebook, Type2 / eType2 codebook, AI / ML based CSI) .

[0083] The CSI report configuration may include different CSI sub-report sub-configurations corresponding to different power configurations. In an embodiment, the NE may configure a list of CSI report sub-configurations in a CSI report configuration, where in different sub-configurations the NE configures different power configuration for different beams (e.g., different CBSRs indicating the power scaling factor for each beam group or the NE configuring whether a beam group can be selected or not may be different for different sub-configurations) . The NE may configure the CBSR based (1) on indicating whether a beam group can be selected for CSI reporting or (2) on configuring power scaling factors for each beam group. The NE may configure or trigger the UE to report multiple CSI sub-reports according to the configured CBSR in a CSI report corresponding to multiple CSI report sub-configurations. Then after receiving the CSI report with multiple CSI sub-reports, the NE may determine whether to transmit one or multiple layers of the PDSCH based on power scaling or not.

[0084] In some implementations, the NE may configure the UE to measure the CSI sub-reports based on a common set of CSI-RS resources for channel measurement. The NE may configure the same or different additional power offset for each CSI sub-report. In some implementations, the NE may configure whether the inter-layer power borrowing should be enabled or not in the CSI report configuration or in each CSI report sub-configuration.

[0085] Then the UE may calculate the RI / PMI / CQI / LI for each CSI sub-report based on the corresponding CSI report sub-configuration. Fig. 9 illustrates a CSI report configuration 990 including CSI report sub-configurations 992 and 994 for different power configurations, and CSI sub-reports 996 and 998 that the UE generates based on the CSI report sub-configurations 992 and 994, respectively.

[0086] Numerical adjectives “first” , “second” , and “third” do not imply any order (are not ordinals) but are markers to distinguish separate instances of similar elements. References to the singular (e.g., “a” or “an” , “the” ) should include the plural unless clearly indicated otherwise.

[0087] As used herein, a phrase referring to “at least one of” or “one or more of” a list of items refers to any combination of those items, including single members. For example, “at least one of: a, b, or c” is intended to cover the possibilities of: a only, b only, c only, a combination of a and b, a combination of a and c, a combination of b and c, and a combination of a and b and c.

[0088] Although the features and elements of the present embodiments are described in the embodiments in particular combinations, each feature or element can be used alone without the other features and elements of the embodiments or in various combinations with or without other features and elements disclosed herein. The methods or flowcharts may be implemented in a computer program, software or firmware tangibly embodied in a computer-readable storage medium for execution by a specifically programmed computer or processor.
