AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing ventilation systems for aircraft are bulky, weight-constrained, and duration-limited, necessitating large oxygen reserves that reduce cargo capacity and constrain flight routes, while traditional emergency oxygen systems are inefficient and pose fire risks.

Method used

A ventilation mask that adjusts oxygen and carbon dioxide levels using ambient air, controlled by a mechanism responsive to user inhalation pressure, recycling exhaled carbon dioxide to optimize gas mixtures and reduce the need for additional gas cylinders.

Benefits of technology

The system provides efficient oxygen delivery with ambient air dilution, maintaining safe carbon dioxide levels and reducing system weight and size, thereby enhancing flight capabilities and safety.

Abstract

A ventilation mask, comprising: a mask cup configured to receive air exhaled by a user; a re-breather bag configured to receive the exhaled air from the mask cup, the re-breather bag being further configured to at least temporarily store the exhaled air within the re-breather bag and subsequently return at least a portion 5 of the exhaled air to the mask cup; an oxygen feed configured to supply oxygen to the mask cup; and an ambient air value configured to control the flow of ambient air into the mask cup; wherein the ambient air valve comprises a control mechanism configured to adjust the ambient air valve between a first position and a second position in order to control the flow of ambient air; wherein the control 10 mechanism is configured to adjust the ambient air valve based on an air pressure within the mask cup applied to the control mechanism; and wherein the mask cup delivers a gas mixture to a user, based on gas supplied from the oxygen feed, gas supplied from the re-breather bag, and gas supplied from the ambient air valve, and wherein the contribution to the gas mixture from the ambient air valve is 15 dependent on the air pressure created by the user within the mask cup during an inhalation.
