Description

POLYVINYL CHLORIDE COMPOSITION AND POLYVINYL CHLORIDE ARTIFICIAL LEATHER THEREOFTechnical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a polyvinyl chloride composition and polyvinyl chloride artificial leather thereof. The polyvinyl chloride composition comprises a flame retardant, and may be applied in fields such as automobiles and home decoration.Background

[0002] Leather, as a surface decoration material, is widely used in many fields such as automobiles and home decoration. Common types of leather comprise genuine leather, polar artificial leather such as polyvinyl chloride (hereinafter referred to as PVC) artificial leather, and non-polar artificial leather such as thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer (hereinafter referred to as TPO) artificial leather.

[0003] The PVC artificial leather is a commonly used material for automotive interiors, which is widely used in dashboards, seats, door panels, and other parts, and remains in close contact with drivers and passengers. In the past, antimony trioxide became the most commonly used flame retardant for the PVC artificial leather due to its excellent flame retardant effect. However, antimony is a toxic element that is harmful to human health. Especially under combustion conditions, antimony compounds can also generate large amounts of toxic or irritating smog, posing serious impacts on human body and the environment. The antimony trioxide faces the risk of being banned and strictly controlled worldwide. On October 27, 2017, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified the antimony trioxide as a Group 2B carcinogen. In April 2018, the European Union included antimony trioxide in the list of restricted substances under RoHS Directive.

[0004] Therefore, it is desirable to provide a new technical solution to solve the above technical problem.Summary

[0005] The technical problem to be solved by the present invention is: to provide a PVC composition and PVC artificial leather thereof, which have good flame retardant performance and are more environmentally-friendly, safer and cheaper.

[0006] To solve the above technical problem, the present invention can adopt the following technical solution: a PVC composition for preparing PVC artificial leather, wherein the PVC composition comprises a PVC resin, a plasticizer, and a flame retardant, and the flame retardant comprises only bismuth trioxide.

[0007] The applicant has found through extensive experiments that completely replacing non-environmentally friendly antimony trioxide with environmentally-friendly bismuth trioxide may still ensure flame retardant performance of the PVC artificial leather prepared from the PVC composition, which not only enhances environmental protection and safety but also maintains the flame retardant performance and provides lower cost. The applicant has found through research that the bismuth trioxide can remain in a condensed phase during the combustion process, does not generate toxic gases, and has better safety compared to the antimony trioxide.

[0008] In the present invention, the PVC composition comprises 5 to 8 parts by weight of the bismuth trioxide, based on a total weight of the PVC resin and the plasticizer being 100 parts by weight. Therefore, the flame retardant performance of the PVC artificial leather prepared from the PVC composition is better. More preferably, the PVC composition comprises 6 to 8 parts by weight of the bismuth trioxide.

[0009] In the present invention, those skilled in the art may select conventional PVC resins (e.g., PVC paste resin) and plasticizers (e.g., phthalate plasticizer and trimellitate plasticizer) according to actual needs. The PVC composition may further be added with a pigment paste, a foaming agent, a stabilizer, and other additives according to actual needs. The pigment paste may be one or more of carbon black, titanium dioxide, iron oxide red, phthalocyanine blue, and cobalt green. The foaming agent may be a chemical foaming agent or a physical foaming agent. The stabilizer may be one or more of a calcium-zinc stabilizer, an epoxy resin, a UV absorber, and an antioxidant. In addition, those skilled in the art may also select appropriate contents of these components according to actual needs.

[0010] To address the above technical problem, the present invention can also adopt the following technical solution: a PVC composition for preparing the PVC artificial leather, the PVC composition comprising the PVC resin, the plasticizer, and the flame retardant, wherein the flame retardant comprises the antimony trioxide and the bismuth trioxide.

[0011] The applicant has found through extensive experiments that partially replacing the non-environmentally friendly antimony trioxide with the environmentally-friendly bismuth trioxide may still ensure the flame retardant performance of the PVC artificial leather prepared from the PVC composition, which not only enhances environmental protection and safety but also maintains the flame retardant performance and provides lower cost. The antimony trioxide primarily reduces a burning rate of materials through gas phase flame retardancy. The antimony trioxide decomposes upon heating and reacts with PVC matrix to generate antimony trichloride gas. The antimony trichloride gas has a higher vapor density and coats the PVC matrix, reducing the surrounding oxygen concentration and thereby inhibiting combustion. The applicant has found through research that the bismuth trioxide can remain in the condensed phase during the combustion process, does not generate toxic gases, and has better safety compared to the antimony trioxide. The combination of the two may still achieve good flame retardant performance.

[0012] In the present invention, the flame retardant comprises only the antimony trioxide and the bismuth trioxide.

[0013] In the present invention, a weight ratio of the antimony trioxide to the bismuth trioxide is 4: 1 to 1: 1. More preferably, the weight ratio of the antimony trioxide to the bismuth trioxide is 4: 1 to 2.5: 1.5. More preferably, the weight ratio of the antimony trioxide to the bismuth trioxide is 3: 1 to 2.5: 1.5. The applicant has found through research that when the added amounts of the antimony trioxide and the bismuth trioxide meet a certain weight ratio, the two produce a synergistic flame retardant effect. The reason is that the bismuth trioxide primarily performs flame retardancy through the condensed phase mechanism, which promotes the cross-linking and carbonization of a PVC surface layer prepared from the PVC composition during the combustion process, generating more carbon layers. On the one hand, these carbon layers can form a barrier layer to isolate heat and oxygen, thereby slowing down a flame spread rate of materials. On the other hand, they can reduce volatilization of combustible substances in the PVC surface layer, thereby reducing the content of combustible free radicals in the gas phase, inhibiting free radical chain reactions, and slowing down the flame spread rate of materials.

[0014] In the present invention, the PVC composition comprises 3 to 5 parts by weight of the flame retardant, based on the total weight of the PVC resin and the plasticizer being 100 parts by weight.

[0015] In the present invention, those skilled in the art may select conventional PVC resins (e.g., PVC paste resin) and plasticizers (e.g., phthalate plasticizer and trimellitate plasticizer) according to actual needs.

[0016] To address the above technical problem, the present invention can also adopt the following technical solution: a PVC artificial leather comprising the PVC surface layer prepared from the PVC composition described in any of the preceding embodiments.

[0017] In the present invention, the PVC surface layer may be a PVC compact layer, a PVC foam layer or a PVC adhesive layer. The primary difference between the PVC compact layer and the PVC foam layer is whether the layer is foamed, i.e., whether a foaming agent is added to a formulation of the layer; the primary difference between the PVC compact layer and the PVC adhesive layer is whether a pigment paste is added. Therefore, for the present invention, if the purpose of the invention can be achieved in the PVC foam layer, those skilled in the art may directly and meaninglessly conclude that the purpose of the invention may also be achieved in the PVC compact layer and the PVC adhesive layer.Detailed Description

[0018] The present invention is further illustrated below through embodiments and comparative examples.

[0019] Embodiment 1

[0020] This embodiment pertains to the preparation of PVC artificial leather. Methods for preparation of the PVC artificial leather used in this embodiment are routine in the art. Those skilled in the art would be well aware of how to select specific devices, process steps and conditions. Therefore, the following description of the preparation process only relates to key steps and conditions of one of the preparation methods.

[0021] Step 1: Preparation of slurry

[0022] According to component and content requirements of a PVC compact layer composition as specified in Table 1-1, add a certain amount of the components of the PVC compact layer composition into a mixing tank, then perform mechanical stirring and evacuation until the mixture is uniformly mixed to obtain a PVC compact layer slurry.

[0023] According to the components and content requirements of a PVC foam layer composition as specified in Table 1-1, add a certain amount of the components of the PVC foam layer composition into the mixing tank, then perform mechanical stirring and evacuation until the mixture is uniformly mixed to obtain a PVC foam layer slurry.

[0024] According to the components and content requirements of a PVC adhesive layer composition as specified in Table 1-1, add a certain amount of the components of the PVC adhesive layer composition into the mixing tank, then perform mechanical stirring and evacuation until the mixture is uniformly mixed to obtain a PVC adhesive layer slurry.

[0025] Step 2: Coating and base fabric lamination

[0026] First, the PVC compact layer slurry is applied onto a release paper, dried and cooled to obtain a PVC compact layer. Then, the PVC foam layer slurry is coated onto the PVC compact layer, dried and cooled to obtain a PVC foam layer. Next, the PVC adhesive layer slurry is applied onto the PVC foam layer, the base fabric is attached thereto, and then perform drying and cooling to obtain a PVC artificial leather coating material. After leaving an oven, separate the PVC artificial leather coating material from the release paper, and roll them separately. The rolled PVC artificial leather coating material is sent to a printing stage.

[0027] Step 3: Printing

[0028] In the printing stage, after the above rolled PVC artificial leather coating material is unrolled, print water-based polyurethane paint on a surface layer of the PVC artificial leather coating material. After the water-based polyurethane paint is printed by a printing machine, place the PVC artificial leather coating material into the oven for drying, then cool and roll it up to obtain a rolled and printed semi-finished product of the PVC artificial leather. Send the printed semi-finished product of the PVC artificial leather to an embossing stage.

[0029] Step 4: Embossing

[0030] In the embossing stage, unroll the rolled and printed semi-finished product of the PVC artificial leather. After a surface of the printed semi-finished product of the PVC artificial leather is softened by heating, use an embossing roller to transfer patterns on the surface of the embossing roller to the surface of the PVC artificial leather by applying pressure. After cooling, the PVC artificial leather with a pattern on the surface is obtained.

[0031] Embodiments 2-11

[0032] Embodiments 2-11 are also the preparation of PVC artificial leather. The preparation process of the PVC artificial leather, raw materials of a paint layer, and selection of a base fabric layer are exactly the same as those in Embodiment 1. For the differences, see Table 1-1 and Table 1-2.
