Description

METHOD OF DETERMINING CORRECTED PATH OF INDUSTRIAL ROBOT AND CORRESPONDING ELECTRONIC DEVICEFIELD

[0001] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to a field of industrial robots, and more particularly, to a method of determining a corrected path of an industrial robot and a corresponding electronic device.BACKGROUND

[0002] Robot Programming by Demonstration (PbD) is an intuitive method of instructing the industrial robots to perform tasks through direct demonstration rather than through traditional programming languages or coding. PbD has become a central topic of robotics that spans across general research areas such as human-robot interaction, machine learning, machine vision and motor control. A teaching device is used to record the motion or the moving path of the operator holding the teaching device. Such a motion may then be mapped to the industrial robot to allow the industrial robot following the path of operator to perform a predetermined action.

[0003] However, there are some defects of the existing approaches of PbD. For example, fine calibration between the coordinates of the teaching device and the coordinates of the industrial robot is inevitable, which needs professional skills and is also time consuming. Additionally, the error during the execution process of the industrial robot may be directly accumulated to PbD system, which leads to deviations between human demonstrated path and the final executed path of the industrial robot. Therefore, there is still a need to correct the path so as to improve the accuracy of the final path for robot program by demonstration.SUMMARY

[0004] In general, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a method of determining a corrected path of an industrial robot and a corresponding electronic device, which address the existing problems and / or any potential problems.

[0005] In a first aspect, there is provided a method of determining a corrected path of an industrial robot. The method comprises obtaining a first path from a teaching device, wherein the teaching device is actuated by an operator to move along the first path, and wherein an identification device is provided to allow an imaging device to capture the identification device to determine a first relative position of the teaching device relative to the identification device, wherein one of the identification device and the imaging device is mounted to the teaching device; obtaining a second path from the teaching device, wherein the teaching device is mounted onto the industrial robot and is actuated by the industrial robot to move along the second path; wherein the second path is determined based on a second relative position of the teaching device relative to the industrial robot and wherein the second relative position is determined based on a first relative position of the teaching device relative to the identification device; and determining a relative spatial relationship between the first path and the second path to generate a corrected path.

[0006] According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the teaching process for the industrial robot gets better accuracy and less set-up efforts.

[0007] In some example embodiments, the method further comprises: actuating an execution tool mounted onto the industrial robot to move along the corrected path.

[0008] In some example embodiments, determining the second relative position based on the first relative position comprises: determining a relative position between the identification device and the industrial robot; and determining the second relative position of the teaching device relative to the industrial robot based on the relative position between the identification device and the industrial robot and the first relative position of the teaching device relative to the identification device.

[0009] In some example embodiments, the relative spatial relationship between the first path and the second path is determined by a point cloud registration method.

[0010] In some example embodiments, the identification device is provided adjacent to or on a surface of the object and the imaging device is mounted to the teaching device; or the imaging device is provided adjacent to or on a surface of the object and the identification device is mounted to the teaching device.

[0011] In a second aspect, there is provided an electronic device of determining a corrected path of an industrial robot. The electronic device comprises a first path obtaining module configured to obtain a first path from a teaching device, wherein the teaching device is actuated by an operator to move along the first path, and wherein an identification device is provided to allow an imaging device to capture the identification device to determine a first relative position of the teaching device relative to the identification device, wherein one of the identification device and the imaging device is mounted to the teaching device; a second path obtaining module configured to obtain a second path from the teaching device, wherein the teaching device is mounted onto the industrial robot and is actuated by the industrial robot to move along the second path; wherein the second path is determined based on a second relative position of the teaching device relative to the industrial robot and wherein the second relative position is determined based on a first relative position of the teaching device relative to the identification device; and a determining device configured to determine a relative spatial relationship between the first path and the second path to generate a corrected path.

[0012] In some example embodiments, the electronic device further comprises: an actuating module configured to actuate an execution tool mounted onto the industrial robot to move along the corrected path.

[0013] In some example embodiments, determining the second relative position based on the first relative position comprises: determining a relative position between the identification device and the industrial robot; and determining the second relative position of the teaching device relative to the industrial robot based on the relative position between the identification device and the industrial robot and the first relative position of the teaching device relative to the identification device.

[0014] In some example embodiments, the relative spatial relationship between the first path and the second path is determined by a point cloud registration method.

[0015] In some example embodiments, the identification device is provided adjacent to or on a surface of the object and the imaging device is mounted to the teaching device; or the imaging device is provided adjacent to or on a surface of the object and the identification device is mounted to the teaching device.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0023] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to some example embodiments. It is to be understood that these embodiments are described only for the purpose of illustration and to help those skilled in the art to understand and implement the present disclosure, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure. The disclosure described herein can be implemented in various manners other than the ones described below.

[0024] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0025] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment, ” “an embodiment, ” “an example embodiment, ” and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to apply such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0026] It should be understood that although the terms “first” and “second” etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another. For example, a first element could be termed a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the listed terms.

[0027] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0028] As described above, the conventional approaches of carrying out demonstration for an industrial robot still have some problems. For example, a fine calibration between the coordinates of the teaching device and the coordinates of the industrial robot is needed to transfer path from the coordinates of the teaching device to the coordinates of the industrial robot in a high accurate way before an operator can demonstrate any task using the PbD system. In order to allow the industrial robot to repeat the teaching path precisely, a rigid transfer matrix between the coordinates of the teaching device and the coordinates of the industrial robot must be calibrated with high accuracy, otherwise the path generated for the industrial robot will shift a lot in six dimensional space. However, a fine calibration takes hours effort of a skilled robot engineer, which is rather time assuming.

[0029] Moreover, in the current PbD solutions, since the industrial robot is running with its absolute accuracy than repeatability, more errors will be introduced to the PbD system. This leads to an undesirable phenomenon that even if the recorded path is perfect, the executed path of the industrial robot is far from expected accuracy.

[0030] According to example embodiments of the present disclosure, a path correction approach is proposed. In the proposed approach, by attaching sensor (s) to the industrial robot during try run, the try run path of industrial robot is recorded and compared to a demonstrated path in the coordinates of the teaching device. Algorithm then makes correction for the try run path of the industrial robot and generates a new path accordingly for the formal execution of the industrial robot.

[0031] Example embodiments will be described in more detail hereinafter in accordance with Figs. 1-7. With reference to Fig. 1 at first, which illustrates a schematic diagram of a robotic system 10 in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0032] As illustrated in Fig. 1, the robotic system 10 includes an industrial robot 110. The industrial robot 110 may be designed to control an execution tool 111 on a mechanical arm 112 to carry out a variety of actions, for example, a painting operation and machining operations such as a milling operation, a grinding operation, etc. Take the painting operation as an example, in some example embodiments, the execution tool 111 may be a painting gun which may eject painting fluid onto a surface of an object 130 to be decorated. It is to be understood that this is merely illustrative, rather than restrictive. The industrial robot 110 may be of any type of robot which may carry out a variety of operations, and the specific types of the operations carried out by the industrial robot 10 are not limited in this regard.

[0033] As shown in Fig. 1, the industrial robot 110 is communicatively coupled to a robot controller 120 and the robot controller 120 is configured to manipulate the movement of the mechanical arm 112 according to the predetermined instructions. With the help of the robot controller 120, the execution tool 111 mounted to the mechanical arm 112 may be driven to a desired position to carry out the predetermined operation.

[0034] Fig. 2 illustrates a method 200 of determining a corrected path of an industrial robot 110 in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The following steps may be described by taking a painting robot as an example. Figs. 3-5 illustrate schematic views of the successive steps of path correction in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 2 will be described in details in conjunction with Figs. 3-5 to make each block of Fig. 2 to be clearer and easier to understand.

[0035] At block 202, the method 200 includes obtaining a first path S1 from a teaching device 140. As used herein, the teaching device 140 is configured to teach the industrial robot 110 how to move. For example, if the industrial robot 110 is used for painting, the teaching device 140 can teach the industrial robot 110 to move along what kinds of path and teach the industrial robot 110 to paint at how much painting flow rate. The teaching device 140 can be held by an operator, who can use it to paint the object 130 as a teaching example. The operator can see the result during painting intuitively. The teaching device 140 will record the path using sensor (s) and also record the painting parameter, for example painting pressure, the painting color, the painting rate, painting speed, brush shape, etc. during painting. The teaching device 140 will transform the data it recorded from the painting process into robot code and thus the industrial robot 110 can paint the workpiece the same as the operator did in real painting process.

[0036] As shown in Fig. 3, the teaching device 140 may be actuated by an operator 160 to move along the first path S1. In the shown embodiment, the execution tool 111 is attached onto the teaching device 140. However, this is not necessary. The operator 160 may or may not carry out a real painting on the object 130. The first path S1 is a path of the teaching device 140 actuated by the operator 160 relative to the object 130 to be handled, and therefore, the first path S1 may be understood as a demonstrated path or an ideal path. It would be perfect if the real path of the execution tool 111 can follow this ideal path during execution process. But for various reasons, this is difficult. The goal of the present disclosure is to make the real path of the execution tool 111 to be as close to this ideal path as possible. The teaching device 140 may be provided with an imaging device 142. As also can be seen from Fig. 3, an identification device 132 may be provided within the field of view of the imaging device 142 to allow the imaging device 142 on the teaching device 140 to capture the identification device 132. In this way, the relative position (referred to as a first relative position hereinafter) of the teaching device 140 relative to the identification device 132 may be determined.

[0037] In some example embodiments, the identification device 132 may be a two dimensional code or three dimensional code for use with the imaging device 142. As shown in Fig. 3, the identification device 132 may be provided adjacent to the object 130 to be handled. The object 130 is going to be handled, for example to be painted, by the tool 111 in real execution process. In the correction process prior to the real execution process, the relative position between the identification device 132 and the object 130 is kept unchanged. That is, the identification device 132 and the object 130 may be deemed as a whole during the entire correction process.

[0038] In the shown embodiments, the identification device 132 may be provided at a distance away from the object 130. In other possible embodiments, the identification device 132 may also be provided on the surface of the object 130. The present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0039] With reference back to Fig. 2, at block 204, the method 200 includes obtaining a second path S2 from the teaching device 140. With reference to Fig. 4, the teaching device 140 is clamped onto the industrial robot 110 and is actuated by the industrial robot 110 to move along the second path S2. The relative position between the identification device 132 and the industrial robot 110 may be determined roughly in advance. In this way, the position of the teaching device 140 relative to the identification device 132 may be transformed into the position of the teaching device 140 relative to the industrial robot 110. Therefore, a relative position (referred to as a second relative position) of the teaching device 140 relative to the industrial robot 110 may also be determined based on the first relative position of the teaching device 140 relative to the identification device 132 to allow the industrial robot 110 to actuate the teaching device 140 to move along the second path S2. The second path S2 may be understood as a try run path.

[0040] Figs. 6A-6B illustrates the process of generating the corrected path in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure. As illustrated in Fig. 6A, the first path S1 and the second path S2 are the paths described above and are roughly the same. However, there is a shift or an offset between the first path S1 and the second path S2. The shift is incurred by two reasons. First, as described above, the relative position between the identification device 132 and the industrial robot 110 is solely determined roughly instead of being determined precisely. Second, as an inherent defect of the industrial robot 110, the absolute accuracy of the industrial robot 110 is generally worse than its repeatability.

[0041] With reference back to Fig. 2, at block 206, the method 200 includes determining a relative spatial relationship between the first path S1 and the second path S2 to generate a corrected path Sc. In some example embodiments, a point cloud registration method may be used to establish the connection between the first path S1 and the second path S2. By using the approaches currently known or to be developed in the future, a corrected path Sc may be generated. As shown in Fig. 6B, the corrected path Sc is generated based on the first path S1 and the second path S2. The corrected path Sc may be very close to the first path S1. According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the difference caused by both the above factors can be addressed together. Therefore, it is no need to precisely determine the relative position between the identification device 132 and the industrial robot 110. Also, the inherent defect of the industrial robot 110 that the absolute accuracy of the industrial robot 110 is generally worse than its repeatability may be overcome.

[0042] The method 200 further includes actuating an execution tool 111 to move along the corrected path Sc. After the block 206, the correction process has been finished. With reference to Fig. 5, the identification device 132 has been removed from the working scenario of the industrial robot 110. Also, the teaching device 140 is detached from the mechanical arm 112 of the industrial robot 110 and the execution tool 111 configured to perform the predetermined operation (for example the painting operation) on the object 130 is attached onto the mechanical arm 112 at the same place with the teaching device 140. Since the corrected path Sc is a path after correction, the movement of the execution tool 111 along the corrected path Sc is an accurate path, which can be quite close to the first path S1.

[0043] According to example embodiments of the present disclosure, a path correction method is proposed. In the proposed method, after a demonstration path (i.e., the first path S1) is recorded in the coordinates of the teaching device 140, the teaching device 140 is attached to the industrial robot 110 for try run. Then the try run path of the industrial robot 110 (i.e., the second path S2) is also recorded in the coordinates of the teaching device 140. With these two paths, a correction algorithm is imposed to the try run path and generates a new corrected path (i.e., the corrected path Sc) for robot code generation.

[0044] With the example embodiments of the present disclosure, it can be ensured that the final path running by the industrial robot 110 gets much higher accuracy (high repeatability instead of absolute accuracy) and, as another effect, no more fine calibration between the coordinates of the teaching device 140 and the coordinates of the industrial robot 110 is needed. In this way, the PbD system for the industrial robot 110 gets better accuracy and less set-up efforts. The corrected path Sc can align to the demonstrated path (i.e., the first path S1) in macroscopic and microscopic level.

[0045] As shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, the imaging device 142 is provided on the teaching device 140 while the identification device 132 is provided out from the teaching device 140. This is called as “inside-out” layout. It is to be understood that this is only one possible layout according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. In other possible examples, the identification device 132 may be provided on the surface of the teaching device 140 while the imaging device 142 may be provided out from the teaching device 140. This may be called as “outside in” layout. Both layouts are possible.

[0046] In a second aspect, there is provided an electronic device of determining a corrected path of an industrial robot 110. The electronic device comprises a first path obtaining module configured to obtain a first path S1 from a teaching device 140, wherein the teaching device 140 is actuated by an operator 160 to move along the first path S1, and wherein an identification device 132 is provided to allow an imaging device 142 to capture the identification device 132 to determine a first relative position of the teaching device 140 relative to the identification device 132, wherein one of the identification device 132 and the imaging device 142 is mounted to the teaching device 140; a second path obtaining module configured to obtain a second path S2 from the teaching device 140, wherein the teaching device 140 is mounted onto the industrial robot 110 and is actuated by the industrial robot 110 to move along the second path S2; wherein the second path S2 is determined based on a second relative position of the teaching device 140 relative to the industrial robot 110 and wherein the second relative position is determined based on a first relative position of the teaching device 140 relative to the identification device 132; and a determining device configured to determine a relative spatial relationship between the first path S1 and the second path S2 to generate a corrected path Sc.

[0047] In some example embodiments, the electronic device further comprises: an actuating module configured to actuate an execution tool 111 mounted onto the industrial robot 110 to move along the corrected path Sc.

[0048] In some example embodiments, determining the second relative position based on the first relative position comprises: determining a relative position between the identification device 132 and the industrial robot 110; and determining the second relative position of the teaching device 140 relative to the industrial robot 110 based on the relative position between the identification device 132 and the industrial robot 110 and the first relative position of the teaching device 140 relative to the identification device 132.

[0049] In some example embodiments, the relative spatial relationship between the first path S1 and the second path S2 is determined by a point cloud registration method.

[0050] In some example embodiments, the identification device 132 is provided adjacent to or on a surface of the object 130 and the imaging device 142 is mounted to the teaching device 140; or the imaging device 142 is provided adjacent to or on a surface of the object 130 and the identification device 132 is mounted to the teaching device 140.

[0051] It is to be understood that although the above disclosure is described by taking the object painting scenario as examples, this is only for illustration without suggesting any limitations as to the scope of the subject matter described here the above embodiments may be used in other scenarios.

[0052] Fig. 7 is a schematic diagram illustrating a device 700 that may be used to implement embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated, the device 700 includes a central processing unit (CPU) 701, which may execute various appropriate actions and processing based on the computer program instructions stored in a read-only memory (ROM) 702 or the computer program instructions loaded into a random access memory (RAM) 703 from a storage unit 708. The RAM 703 also stores all kinds of programs and data required by operating the storage device 700. CPU 701, ROM 702 and RAM 703 are connected to each other via a bus 704 to which an input / output (I / O) interface 705 is also connected.

[0053] A plurality of components in the device 700 are connected to the I / O interface 705, including: an input unit 706, such as keyboard, mouse and the like; an output unit 707, such as various types of displays, loudspeakers and the like; a storage unit 708, such as the magnetic disk, optical disk and the like; and a communication unit 709, such as network card, modem, wireless communication transceiver and the like. The communication unit 709 allows the device 700 to exchange information / data with other devices through computer networks such as Internet and / or various telecommunication networks.

[0057] The computer-readable program instructions described herein may be downloaded from the computer-readable storage medium to various computing  / processing devices, or to external computers or external storage devices via Internet, local area network, wide area network and / or wireless network. The network may include copper transmission cables, optical fiber transmission, wireless transmission, routers, firewalls, switches, gateway computers and / or edge servers. The network adapter or network interface in each computing / processing device receives computer-readable program instructions from the network, and forwards the computer-readable program instructions for storage in the computer-readable storage medium of each computing / processing device.

[0058] The computer program instructions for executing the operations of the present disclosure may be assembly instructions, instructions of instruction set architecture (ISA) , machine instructions, machine-related instructions, microcodes, firmware instructions, state setting data, or a source code or target code written by any combinations of one or more programming languages including object-oriented programming languages and conventional procedural programming languages. The computer-readable program instructions may be completely or partially executed on the user computer, or executed as an independent software package, or executed partially on the user computer and partially on the remote computer, or completely executed on the remote computer or the server. In the case where a remote computer is involved, the remote computer may be connected to the user computer by any type of networks, including local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) , or connected to an external computer (such as via Internet provided by the Internet service provider) . In some embodiments, the electronic circuit is customized by using the state information of the computer-readable program instructions. The electronic circuit may be a programmable logic circuit, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or a programmable logic array (PLA) for example. The electronic circuit may execute computer-readable program instructions to implement various aspects of the present disclosure.

[0059] The computer-readable program instructions may be provided to the processing unit of a general purpose computer, a dedicated computer or other programmable data processing devices to generate a machine, causing the instructions, when executed by the processing unit of the computer or other programmable data processing devices, to generate a device for implementing the functions / actions specified in one or more blocks of the flow chart and / or block diagram. The computer-readable program instructions may also be stored in the computer-readable storage medium. These instructions enable the computer, the programmable data processing device and / or other devices to operate in a particular way, such that the computer-readable medium storing instructions may comprise a manufactured article that includes instructions for implementing various aspects of the functions / actions specified in one or more blocks of the flow chart and / or block diagram.

[0060] The computer-readable program instructions may also be loaded into computers, other programmable data processing devices or other devices, so as to execute a series of operational steps on the computers, other programmable data processing devices or other devices to generate a computer implemented process. Therefore, the instructions executed on the computers, other programmable data processing devices or other devices can realize the functions / actions specified in one or more blocks of the flow chart and / or block diagram.

[0061] The accompanying flow chart and block diagram present possible architecture, functions and operations realized by the system, method and computer program product according to a plurality of embodiments of the present disclosure. At this point, each block in the flow chart or block diagram may represent a module, a program segment, or a portion of the instruction. The module, the program segment or the portion of the instruction includes one or more executable instructions for implementing specified logic functions. In some alternative implementations, the function indicated in the block may also occur in an order different from the one represented in the drawings. For example, two consecutive blocks actually may be executed in parallel, and sometimes they may also be executed in a reverse order depending on the involved functions. It should also be noted that each block in the block diagram and / or flow chart, and any combinations of the blocks thereof may be implemented by a dedicated hardware-based system for implementing specified functions or actions, or a combination of the dedicated hardware and the computer instructions.

[0062] Various embodiments of the present disclosure have been described above, and the above explanation is illustrative rather than exhaustive and is not limited to the disclosed embodiments. Without departing from the scope and spirit of each explained embodiment, many alterations and modifications are obvious for those ordinary skilled in the art. The selection of terms in the text aims to best explain principle, actual application or technical improvement in the market of each embodiment or make each embodiment disclosed in the text comprehensible for those ordinary skilled in the art.

[0063] It is to be understood that although the above disclosure are described by taking the object transferring scenario as examples, this is only for illustration without suggesting any limitations as to the scope of the subject matter described here the above embodiments may be used in other scenarios.

[0064] Further, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. On the other hand, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.
