Abstract

A hydrophobic, biodegradable paper or board comprises at least one layer of paper having at least one mass sizing agent and additives, such as wet-strength agents and optionally binders, wherein the paper or board consists of chemical or mechanical fibers, such as kraft paper, NSSC paper, recycled waste paper, such as recycled corrugated board (OCC) or mixtures thereof, which is additionally treated and / or coated with one or more selected antimicrobials, mammalian repellents, UV protectants, biodegradable polymers, hydrophobizing agents and at least one biodegradation-promoting agent, such as humic acid, preferably a mixture of humic acid and an inorganic salt having a multivalent cation, such as calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium nitrate, calcium hydroxide or calcium chloride.
