Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application claims the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2018-0003527, filed on January 10, 2018, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Technical Field
[0003] Embodiments of the present invention relate to a display device and a method of manufacturing the display device. Background Art
[0004] With the development of multimedia, display devices are becoming more and more important. Therefore, various types of display devices such as liquid crystal displays and organic light emitting displays are being used.
[0005] Among these display devices, liquid crystal display is one of the most widely used flat panel display types. The liquid crystal display includes a pair of substrates with field generating electrodes (such as pixel electrodes and common electrodes) and a liquid crystal layer between the two substrates. In the liquid crystal display, a voltage is applied to the field generating electrodes to generate an electric field in the liquid crystal layer. The electric field determines the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer and controls the polarization of the incident light. Therefore, an image is displayed by the liquid crystal display.
[0006] In addition, an organic light emitting display uses an organic light emitting diode to display images, wherein the organic light emitting diode generates light through the recombination of electrons and holes. Such an organic light emitting display has the advantages of relatively fast response speed, high brightness, wide viewing angle, and low power consumption.

[0097] In other words, the components at the front surface of the display panel DP and the back surface of the display panel DP may be electrically connected to each other through the through hole H. To this end, the through hole H may be filled with a conductive material. In other words, the components at the front surface of the display panel DP and the back surface of the display panel DP may be electrically connected to each other through the conductive material at the through hole H.
[0098] In an embodiment, the non-display area NDA may include or be divided into a first area A1 surrounding the display area DA (e.g., disposed at all sides of the display area DA) and a second area A2 protruding from the first area A1. The second area A2 may protrude outward from the first area A1. The second area A2 may be narrower than the first area A1. Figure 1 For example, the non-display area NDA surrounding the display area DA includes a first area A1 directly extending from the display area DA to define a maximum dimension of the non-display area NDA in a first direction (e.g., a direction parallel to the direction in which the through holes H are arranged). The second area A2 protruding from the first area A1 allows the first area A1 to be interposed between the second area A2 and the display area DA, so that the maximum dimension of the second area A2 in the first direction (e.g., a direction parallel to the direction in which the through holes H are arranged) is smaller than the maximum dimension of the first area A1.
[0099] In an implementation, the connection portion 500 may be formed at the second area A2.
[0100] The display apparatus according to the embodiment may further include a flexible printed circuit board FPC.
[0101] The flexible printed circuit board FPC may generate signals required for driving the display area DA and transmit the generated signals to the display area DA.
[0102] To this end, a driver integrated circuit IC for generating a driving signal may be provided on the flexible printed circuit board FPC.
[0103] The flexible printed circuit board FPC may have flexibility. Therefore, the flexible printed circuit board FPC may be bent and folded. In other words, the deformed flexible printed circuit board FPC may be formed by a bent flat flexible printed circuit board, but is not limited thereto.
[0104] In an embodiment, the planar shape of the flexible printed circuit board FPC may include a circular shape. In an embodiment, the flexible printed circuit board FPC may be folded back, for example, along a layer of the display device to overlap the display area DA in a top plan view.
[0105] The flexible printed circuit board FPC and the connection portion 500 may be electrically connected to each other. In an embodiment, the flexible printed circuit board FPC and the connection portion 500 may be electrically connected with an anisotropic conductive film (ACF) interposed therebetween.
[0106] Reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 , the cover window CW may be disposed on the front surface (eg, display surface) of the display panel DP, where an image is displayed at the front surface. The cover window CW may define the front surface of the entire display device at its viewing side. Figure 1 and Figure 3 Each may represent a flat form of each of the display panel DP, the cover window CW, the cover panel CP, and the flexible printed circuit board FPC bent or deformed to form a bent form thereof.
[0107] The cover window CW may cover the front surface of the display panel DP. In an implementation, the cover window CW may include or may be made of glass or plastic.
[0108] In an embodiment, a planar shape of the cover window CW may be a circle. In other words, the cover window CW may have a circular shape corresponding to the circular shape of the display panel DP.
[0109] However, the shape of the cover window CW is not limited to the circular shape. When the display panel DP has various shapes as described above, the cover window CW also has various shapes corresponding to the shape of the display panel DP.
[0110] like Figure 2 As shown in , the cover window CW may include a curved surface. In other words, in the assembled display device, the cover window CW may have an upwardly convex parabolic shape in cross section.
[0111] In other words, the cover window CW may be shaped like a dome convex upward.
[0112] An image generated at the display area DA of the display panel DP may be provided to a user through a cover window CW at a viewing side or front side of the display device.
[0113] Refer again Figure 2 When the cover window CW has an upwardly convex arch shape, the display panel DP may be bent along the shape of the inner curved surface of the cover window CW so that the display panel DP has a curved surface. In other words, the curved display panel DP may be formed of a flat display panel bent along the curved cover window CW, but is not limited thereto.
[0114] In other words, since the display panel DP and the cover window CW are attached to each other, the display panel DP may be at least partially bent to contact the cover window CW.
[0115] Reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 , the cover panel CP may be disposed on the rear surface of the display panel DP.
[0116] The cover panel CP may be attached to the back surface of the display panel DP and may reduce impact applied to the display panel DP. In addition, the cover panel CP may dissipate heat generated in the display panel DP and / or may block moisture from entering the display panel DP.
[0117] In an embodiment, the planar shape of the cover panel CP may be a circle. When the display panel DP has a circular shape as described above, the cover panel CP may also have a circular shape to cover the display panel DP.
[0118] In an embodiment, the cover panel CP may include a cutout CO where there is no material of the cover panel CP. The cutout CO may be otherwise referred to as a notch or recess in the cover panel CP. The cutout CO may be defined in a flat cover panel that is flexed or bent to form a curved cover panel CP.
[0119] The cutout portion CO may include a portion of the cover panel CP removed extending from an outer circumference (eg, outer edge) of the cover panel CP toward the inside of the cover panel CP. Thus, the cutout portion CO may have a fan shape or a wedge shape in a top plan view.
[0120] Now refer to Figure 3 The cutout portion CO is described in detail.
[0121] In an embodiment, the cut-away portion CO may include or may be defined by a first side 510, a second side 520, and a contact point 400 where the first side 510 and the second side 520 intersect each other inside the cover panel CP.
[0122] The first side 510 and the second side 520 may extend from an outer periphery (eg, an outer edge) of the cover panel CP toward a center C of the cover panel CP. The center C of the cover panel CP coincides with a center of a flat cover panel forming the cover panel CP.
[0123] Herein, the center C of the cover panel CP may refer to the geometric center of the cover panel CP. If the cover panel CP has a circular shape, the center C may be the center of the circle. The periphery of the display panel DP at the boundary between the first area A1 and the second area A2 may extend as a curve continuing from the outer edge of the first area A1, but is not limited thereto.
[0124] The outer end of the first side 510 and the outer end of the second side 520 at the outer edge of the cover panel CP may be spaced apart from each other. The inner end of the first side 510 opposite to its outer end and the inner end of the second side 520 opposite to its outer end may contact each other. In other words, at the contact point 400, the inner end of the first side 510 and the inner end of the second side 520 may intersect each other.
[0125] In an embodiment, the contact point 400 may be spaced apart from the center C in a top plan view. The curved cover panel CP may be formed by a flat cover panel that is bent, but is not limited thereto. When the cover panel CP set in a flat state is attached to the display panel DP having a curved surface, wrinkles may be formed due to geometric mismatch. These wrinkles are particularly noticeable near the center C and the outer edge of the cover panel CP.
[0126] The cutout portion CO defined or formed in the flat cover panel that is bent to form the cover panel CP can compensate for the geometric mismatch to some extent. In other words, since the cutout portion CO eliminates some stress that forms wrinkles, the formation of wrinkles can be reduced or effectively prevented.
[0127] Refer again Figure 2 The cover panel CP may be attached to the back surface of the display panel DP. When the display panel DP has a curved surface, the cover panel CP may be bent along the shape of the inner curved surface of the display panel DP so that the cover panel CP has a curved surface.
[0128] Wrinkles may be formed in the process of closely attaching the cover panel CP to the display panel DP. However, as described above, the cutout portion CO defined or formed in the cover panel CP may reduce or effectively prevent the formation of wrinkles.
[0129] In an implementation, a flexible printed circuit board FPC may be disposed on the back surface of the cover panel CP.
[0130] In an embodiment, the flexible printed circuit board FPC may be folded back along the thickness of the cover panel CP while being connected to the display panel DP. Therefore, the cover panel CP may be disposed between a portion of the flexible printed circuit board FPC and the display panel DP along the thickness direction of the display device.
[0131] In other words, the front surface of the cover panel CP may be attached to (the back surface of) the display panel DP, and the back surface of the cover panel CP may be attached to (the front surface of) the flexible printed circuit board FPC.
[0132] Hereinafter, a display device according to other modified embodiments will be described. Some of the elements described below may be substantially the same as those of the display device according to the above-described embodiment, and thus a description thereof will be omitted to avoid redundancy.
[0133] Figure 5 is a top plan view of a modified embodiment of a cover panel of a display device according to the present invention.
[0134] Reference Figure 5 In an embodiment, the contact point 401 of the cut-out portion CO1 of the cover panel CP1 may overlap with the center C thereof, thereby coinciding with or aligning with the center C.
[0135] The cut-off portion CO1 may include a first side 511 , a second side 521 , and a contact point 401 at which the first side 511 and the second side 521 meet each other.
[0136] The first side 511 and the second side 521 may extend from an outer periphery (eg, an outer edge) of the cover panel CP1 toward the center C.
[0137] In other words, the outer ends of the first side 511 and the second side 521 are spaced apart from each other, but the inner ends of the first side 511 and the second side 521 opposite to the outer ends thereof may contact each other at the center C.
[0138] In other words, the contact point 401 between the first side 511 and the second side 521 may overlap with the center C to be aligned therewith. In other words, the contact point 401 of the first side 511 and the second side 521 may be the center C of the cover panel CP1.
[0139] Figure 6a is an exploded perspective view of another embodiment of a cover panel of a display device according to the present invention.
[0140] Figure 6b yes Figure 6a A cross-sectional view of a cover panel.
[0141] Reference Figure 6a and Figure 6bIn an embodiment, the cover panel CP2 may include an adhesive layer 603 , a buffer layer 602 , and a dehumidification layer 601 .
[0142] In an embodiment, the cover panel CP2 may have a structure in which a plurality of functional layers are stacked.
[0143] The dehumidification layer 601 may be the same as described above with reference to Figure 2 The dehumidification layer 601 is a layer that contacts the display panel DP in the assembly structure of the display device described. The dehumidification layer 601 may absorb moisture to reduce or effectively prevent moisture from penetrating from the outside of the display panel DP into the display panel DP.
[0144] To this end, the dehumidification layer 601 may include, for example, a sponge.
[0145] The buffer layer 602 may be disposed on the back surface of the dehumidification layer 601. The buffer layer 602 may absorb impact applied thereto. In other words, the buffer layer 602 may reduce or effectively prevent external impact from being transferred to the display panel DP.
[0146] In an implementation, the buffer layer 602 may include a polymer resin, rubber, a urethane-based material, or an acrylic-based material.
[0147] The adhesive layer 603 may be disposed on the back surface of the buffer layer 602. In an implementation, the adhesive layer 603 may include an adhesive resin.
[0148] In an implementation, the adhesive layer 603 may be a double-sided tape.
[0149] The adhesive layer 603 may bond the flexible printed circuit board FPC and the cover panel CP2 together.
[0150] As mentioned above Figure 2 As described, the flexible printed circuit board FPC may be disposed on the back surface of the cover panel CP2.
[0151] When the cover panel CP2 includes the adhesive layer 603 , the cover panel CP2 and the flexible printed circuit board FPC may be bonded to each other through the adhesive layer 603 .
[0152] Adhesive layer 603, buffer layer 602 and dehumidification layer 601 may have the same planar shape as each other. The outer edge and inner edge of each of these layers may be aligned with each other in the common cover panel CP2. In other words, adhesive layer 603, buffer layer 602 and dehumidification layer 601 may have the same shape and completely overlap each other.
[0153] Each of the adhesive layer 603, the buffer layer 602, and the dehumidification layer 601 may include a cutout portion CO defined or formed at the same position as each other. The cutout portions CO may have the same planar shape as each other. The cutout portions CO may completely overlap each other to form a common cutout portion of the cover panel CP2.
[0154] Figure 7 is a top plan view of another modified embodiment of a cover panel of a display device according to the present invention.
[0155] Reference Figure 7 , the cover panel CP3 may include a plurality of cut-out portions.
[0156] In an embodiment, a plurality of cutouts may be provided. In addition, the cutouts may be spaced apart from each other along the outer edge of the cover panel CP3 and at the inner region of the cover panel CP3.
[0157] In an embodiment, the plurality of cutouts may include a first cutout CO_1 and a second cutout CO_2. Each of the first cutout CO_1 and the second cutout CO_2 may have a shape substantially the same as that of the cutout of the display device according to the aforementioned embodiment. Therefore, a description of the shape of each of the first cutout CO_1 and the second cutout CO_2 will be omitted.
[0158] In an embodiment, the first cut-off portion CO_1 and the second cut-off portion CO_2 may be arranged to face each other. In other words, the first cut-off portion CO_1 and the second cut-off portion CO_2 may face each other with respect to the center C therebetween.
[0159] When a plurality of cutouts are provided, stress generated during attachment of the cover panel CP3 to the display panel DP can be more effectively eliminated. Therefore, including more than one cutout can suppress the formation of wrinkles.
[0160] Figure 8 is a top plan view of still another modified embodiment of the cover panel of the display device according to the embodiment. Fig. 9 is a top plan view of still another modified embodiment of the cover panel of the display device according to the present invention.
[0161] Reference Figure 8 and Fig. 9 , the cover panel may include three or more cut-out portions. Figure 8 The cover panel CP4 includes a first cut-off portion CO_1, a second cut-off portion CO_2, and a third cut-off portion CO_3, and Fig. 9 A case is shown in which the cover panel CP5 includes a first cut-off portion CO_1 , a second cut-off portion CO_2 , a third cut-off portion CO_3 , and a fourth cut-off portion CO_4 .
[0162] When a plurality of cutouts are provided, stress generated during the attachment process can be dispersed more effectively.
[0163] although Figure 8 Three cutouts are shown and Fig. 9 Four cutouts are shown in FIG. 1 , but the number of the cutouts is not limited to three or four. In other embodiments, the number of the cutouts may be four or more.
[0164] The plurality of cutouts within the cover panel may be spaced apart from each other at substantially equal distances, but is not limited thereto.
[0165] Fig.10 is a top plan view of another embodiment of a display device according to the present invention.
[0166] Reference Fig.10 , the cover panel CP6 may include a first cut-out portion CO_1 and a second cut-out portion CO_2. The first cut-out portion CO_1 and the second cut-out portion CO_2 may cooperate to form a single cut-out portion of the cover panel CP6.
[0167] As described above, the display panel DP may include the second area A2 protruding from the first area A1 in a certain direction.
[0168] Points from which the second area A2 starts may be defined in the display panel DP. For ease of description, these points will be referred to as a first point P1 and a second point P2.
[0169] The second area A2 may protrude outward from the first point P1 and the second point P2. In other words, the first point P1 and the second point P2 may be boundaries between the first area A1 and the second area A2.
[0170] The first point P1 and the second point P2 may be spaced apart from each other.
[0171] The outer edge of the display panel DP may extend between the first point P1 and the second point P2 to define a boundary between the first area A1 and the second area A2. In other words, in an embodiment, the outer edge of the display panel DP may extend as a continuation of the periphery, thereby bending at the boundary between the first area A1 and the second area A2. In another embodiment, the outer edge of the display panel DP may extend as a straight line starting from the first point P1 and the second point P2.
[0172] In an embodiment, the first point P1 and the second point P2 may be inflection points of the periphery of the display panel DP. In other words, the periphery of the display panel DP may extend with a certain curvature at a portion other than the second area A2, and then extend from the first point P1 and the second point P2 at the second area A2 with different curvatures.
[0173] The first reference line RL1 is defined to connect the first point P1 and the center C of the display panel DP to each other, and the second reference line RL2 is defined to connect the second point P2 and the center C to each other.
[0174] The cover panel CP6 may include a main body portion (eg, Fig.10 A substantially circular shape in the display panel DP and a protruding portion, wherein the main portion corresponds to a main portion of the display panel DP and the protruding portion extends from the main portion at a position corresponding to the second area A2 of the display panel DP.
[0175] In an embodiment, for the cover panel CP6, the first cutout portion CO_1 may be disposed on the first reference line RL1 defined with respect to the display panel DP, and the second cutout portion CO_2 may be disposed on the second reference line RL2 defined with respect to the display panel DP.
[0176] In other words, the first cutout portion CO_1 of the cover panel CP6 may overlap with the first reference line RL1 defined for the display panel DP, and the second cutout portion CO_2 of the cover panel CP6 may overlap with the second reference line RL2 defined for the display panel DP. Fig.10 As shown, the first reference line RL1 and the second reference line RL2 may extend from the center C so as to be disposed within a plane region defined by the first cut-off portion CO_1 and the second cut-off portion CO_2.
[0177] In an embodiment, to define the protruding portion of the cover panel CP6, the first contact point 403 of the first cutout CO_1 may be disposed on the first reference line RL1 defined for the display panel DP, and the second contact point 404 of the second cutout CO_2 may be disposed on the second reference line RL2 defined for the display panel DP. The first contact point 403 and the second contact point 404 may be points where the main body of the cover panel CP6 intersects with the protruding portion of the cover panel CP6.
[0178] In an embodiment, the first cutout CO_1 may overlap the first reference line RL1, and the second cutout CO_2 may overlap the second reference line RL2. However, the first contact point 403 may be disposed outside the first reference line RL1, and the second contact point 404 may be disposed outside the second reference line RL2.
[0179] When the display panel DP has the second area A2, the wrinkles of the cover panel CP6 are obvious near the first point P1 and the second point P2. However, if the first cutout portion CO_1 and the second cutout portion CO_2 are defined corresponding to the first reference line RL1 and the second reference line RL2 as described above, the formation of wrinkles in the portions corresponding to the first point P1 and the second point P2 can be reduced or effectively prevented.
[0180] In an embodiment, the protruding portion of the cover panel CP6 may partially cover the second area A2 of the display panel DP.
[0181] The cover panel CP6 covering the second area A2 may overlap the connection portion 500. Therefore, a distal end of the protruding portion of the cover panel CP6 may at least partially overlap an end portion of the flexible printed circuit board FPC at which the flexible printed circuit board FPC is connected to the display panel DP.
[0182] The flexible printed circuit board FPC may include a main body portion (eg, Fig.10 A roughly circular shape in the middle) and a protruding portion, wherein the main portion corresponds to the main portion of the display panel DP and the main portion of the cover panel CP6, and the protruding portion extends from the main portion at a position corresponding to the second area A2 of the display panel DP.
[0183] The cover panel CP6 may not overlap with the bending area BA of the flexible printed circuit board FPC. The bending area BA may be referred to as a folded or bent area of the flexible printed circuit board FPC. In other words, as described above with reference to Figure 2 As described, the bending area BA of the flexible printed circuit board FPC may be folded or bent to be disposed on the back surface of the cover panel CP6. If the cover panel CP6 overlaps with the bending area BA of the flexible printed circuit board FPC, the cover panel CP6 may hinder the folding of the flexible printed circuit board FPC. Therefore, the cover panel CP6 may not overlap with the bending area BA of the flexible printed circuit board FPC.
[0184] Now, a method of manufacturing a display device according to an embodiment will be described hereinafter. Some of the elements described below may be substantially the same as those of the display device according to the above-described embodiment, and thus description thereof will be omitted to avoid redundancy.
[0185] Fig.11 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of a method for manufacturing a display device according to the present invention. Fig.11 According to an embodiment, a method for manufacturing a display device includes: preparing a display panel DP that displays an image and a cover window CW attached to the front surface of the display panel DP; arranging a cover panel CP including a cutout portion CO on the back surface of the display panel DP attached to the cover window CW, wherein the cutout portion CO is defined as extending from the periphery of the cover panel CP toward the center C of the cover panel CP; and squeezing the cover panel CP to the display panel DP attached to the cover window CW.
[0186] The display panel DP and the cover window CW may be substantially the same as those of the display device according to the above-described embodiment. In other words, the cover window CW may have an arch shape, and thus, the display panel DP may include a curved surface attached to an inner curved surface of the cover window CW.
[0187] Arranging the cover panel CP on the back surface of the display panel DP may be performed. Specifically, a flat cover panel ( Fig.11 CP in the display panel) and can be positioned on a curved display panel ( Fig.11 The cover panel CP may be substantially the same as those described in the above embodiments.
[0188] Refer again Fig.11 , pressing the flat cover panel CP to the curved back surface of the display panel DP using a pressure roller (or roller) R may be performed.
[0189] The flat cover panel CP may be bent and attached to the display panel DP by pressing the flat cover panel CP toward the curved display panel DP using a pressure roller R. Although not shown in the drawings, an adhesive layer may be provided between the flat cover panel CP and the curved display panel DP to be attached to the flat cover panel CP. Therefore, when the flat cover panel CP is pressed, the flat cover panel CP is arranged to follow the curve of the curved display panel DP, so that the curved cover panel CP and the curved display panel DP may be bonded to each other.
[0190] In an embodiment, the flat cover panel CP may be bent by being pressed using a pressure roller R. In an embodiment, the pressure roller R may be shaped like a rod whose length extends in the longitudinal direction. In an embodiment, the longitudinal direction may be a direction from the center C of the flat cover panel CP to the periphery (e.g., the outer edge) of the flat cover panel CP.
[0191] In an embodiment, the pressure roller R may have a length corresponding to the distance from the center C of the cover panel CP to the periphery of the cover panel CP. Such a length of the pressure roller R may allow the pressure roller R to move along the curved back surface of the display panel DP, wherein the flat cover panel CP is disposed between the pressure roller R and the display panel DP.
[0192] In an embodiment, the pressure roller R may rotate clockwise or counterclockwise around the center C of the cover panel CP to press the cover panel CP to the curved display panel DP.
[0193] Specifically, the cover panel CP may be pressed by fixing a first end of the pressure roller R to the center C of the cover panel CP and moving a second end of the pressure roller R opposite to the first end thereof along the outer circumference of the cover panel CP.
[0194] Fig.12 is a perspective view showing another embodiment of a method of manufacturing a display device according to the present invention.
[0195] In an embodiment, the flat cover panel CP may be pressed into the curved display panel DP using a pressure pad PAD.
[0196] The pressure pad PAD may have an elastic material. The upper surface of the pressure pad PAD may have an upwardly convex curved surface corresponding to the arch shape of the cover window CW and / or the curved display panel DP. If the cover panel CP is pressed using the pressure pad PAD, the pressure may be uniformly transmitted from the center C of the cover panel CP toward the periphery of the cover panel CP.
[0197] Therefore, the cover panel CP and the display panel DP may be uniformly bonded to each other so as to each have a curved shape.
[0198] As described above, when the cover window CW has an arch shape that defines the curved shape of the display panel DP attached thereto, wrinkles may be formed in the cover panel CP due to geometric mismatch. If one or more cutouts are formed in the cover panel CP as in the above-mentioned embodiment, the stress generated during the extrusion process can be eliminated, thereby reducing or effectively preventing the formation of wrinkles in the cover panel CP.
[0199] According to one or more embodiments, wrinkles formed in a cover panel attached to a curved display panel may be reduced or effectively prevented.
[0200] However, the effects of the embodiments are not limited to those described herein. The above and other effects of the embodiments will become more apparent to those skilled in the art by referring to the claims.
