Description

BACKGROUND

[0001] In various embodiments, electrical connectors and connector systems are known from the prior art. Universal electrical connectors are used to accommodate at least one connector tab in order to establish an electrical connection. The connection portion is thereby connected to an electrical conductor, for example, such as a cable or a terminal rail.

[0002] For example, in order to form a connector system, a plurality of electrical connectors are fastened in a terminal housing by means of their latching arms. In the terminal housing, the connectors can be contacted by means of their connection portions. Universal electrical connectors known, for example, from US 2018 / 0351275 A1 and WO 2014 / 127817 A1.

[0003] However, the electrical connectors known from the prior art have the disadvantage that the electrical connectors can be damaged during assembly, since the force applied to rotate the latching arms from their latching position in the direction of the release position is too great. However, the reliable fastening of the electrical connectors in the seat housing is to be ensured by the latching arms.

[0004] The present invention is therefore based on the task of providing an electrical connector and a connector system in which reliable fastening of the connectors is ensured with low installation forces. SUMMARY

[0005] The present invention relates to an electrical connector comprising at least one base body having at least one contact portion and at least one connection portion. The base body is formed from sheet metal material. The base body has at least one plug seat in the contact portion, which is designed, for example, to receive at least one plug tab. In order to secure the connector in, for example, a seat housing, the base body has at least one latching arm. At least one portion of the latching arm is formed from a first layer of sheet metal material and at least one portion of the latching arm is formed from a second layer of sheet metal material. At least one portion of the latching arm is pivotable against a spring force at least in the direction of a release position, in particular to at least one release position. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a connector plug system.

[0006] The above task is solved in a universal electrical connector having the following features, that the first layer and the second layer at least partially separate from one another when at least one portion of the latching arm is pivoted in the direction of the release position. By at least partially separating the first layer and the second layer when the latching arm is pivoted towards the release position, the first layer and the second layer are deflected to different extents, thereby reducing the assembly forces when the electrical connector is inserted into the seat housing. The first layer and the second layer are deformed to different extents, in particular elastically deformed to different extents.

[0007] The at least one contact portion and the at least one connection portion are formed on a base body of the electrical connector. Preferably, the electrical connector extends along an imaginary axis between the contact portion and the connection portion. The connection portion is arranged for electrical contact with the electrical connector, for example for connecting an electrical conductor, for example a strand of a cable or a rigid conductor, in particular a conductor track. The connection portion is preferably designed such that a connection to the electrical conductor can be achieved by soldering, in particular ultrasonic soldering, brazing or crimping. For crimping, the connection portion has, for example, at least one crimping region and, in particular, is provided with at least one groove embossing.

[0008] The base body is formed from sheet metal material, for example by folding a blank of sheet metal material several times. Preferably, the contact portion and the connection portion are formed from the blank by folding and / or bending. The base body has at least one plug seat in the contact portion, which is preferably designed to receive at least one plug tab.

[0009] In order to secure the electrical connector in the terminal housing, the electrical connector, in particular the plug seat, has at least one latching arm. The latching arm is arranged to extend outwardly away from the contact portion in the direction toward the connection portion. When the electrical connector is inserted into the terminal housing, the latching arm is pivoted in the direction toward the base body from its latching position, in which the latching arm projects outwardly, so that the latching arm latches again in its latching position after complete insertion into the terminal housing and secures the electrical connector in the terminal housing.

[0010] The latching arm has at least one first layer composed of sheet metal material and at least one second layer composed of sheet metal material in its extension, each of the first layer and the second layer extending over at least a portion of the length of the latching arm. The first layer and the second layer are preferably arranged such that they extend one above the other when viewed in the pivoting direction of the latching arm. Both the first layer and the second layer project outwardly.

[0011] The latching arm can be pivoted at least in the direction toward the release position against a spring force from its latching position, in which the latching arm extends away from the outside. In particular, the latching arm can be pivoted into the release position. When the latching arm is pivoted in the direction toward the release position, the spring force of the latching arm opposite to the pivoting is changed as a result of the first layer and the second layer of the latching arm at least partially separating from one another. The distance between the first layer and the second layer increases over at least a portion of its extension when the latching arm is pivoted. The separation relates to the distance between the two layers when in the latching position, which distance is at least partially increased during the pivoting. The first layer and the second layer are configured to be separable during the pivoting. The first layer and the second layer are not connected to one another over at least a portion of their extension, so that they can separate from one another depending on the load.

[0012] Preferably, mainly only the second layer of the latching arm elastically deforms when the latching arm is pivoted in the direction of the release position. For example, the deformation of the first layer is less than the deformation of the second layer. Preferably, the first layer substantially remains in its initial position, in particular due to the first layer being shorter than the second layer. The latching arm can be pivoted at least partially against the spring force in the direction of the release position to a degree at which only the second layer substantially pivots. Because, in particular mainly one or only one layer, namely the second layer, elastically deforms during the pivoting in the direction of the release position, the force applied for the pivoting is reduced.

[0013] In the latching position, the first layer and the second layer at least in certain regions adjoin one another, so that the first layer and the second layer support one another and the latching arm has a high level of stability, in particular due to the double layer. Thus, the invention reduces the assembly forces while ensuring a high stability of the latching position.

[0014] According to a first embodiment of the connector, it has been found to be advantageous if the connector is made from a folded blank and if the first layer and the second layer are folded from opposite end sides of the blank into one another. Thus, in the blank, the first layer and the second layer are arranged at opposite end sides. By folding the blank in order to receive, for example, a plug seat, the opposite end sides are folded into one another so that the first layer and the second layer are arranged on top of one another and form the latching arm. Preferably, the second layer is locally conical at at least one point of its extension.

[0015] According to a further embodiment of the connector, the first layer and the second layer are formed and arranged in such a way that the resistance of the latching arm against a deformation in the direction of the release position starting from the latching position is lower than the resistance of the latching arm against a deformation in the opposite direction. Starting from the latching position, the resistance of the latching arm when deformed away from the release position is greater than the resistance when deformed in the direction of the release position. This is ensured by the fact that both layers, namely the first layer and the second layer, have to be deformed when the latching arm is moved away from the release position, whereas mainly the second layer deforms or only the second layer deforms when the latching arm is pivoted in the direction of the release position.

[0016] Furthermore, according to a further embodiment of the connector, it has been found to be advantageous if the first layer and the second layer have a curvature over at least a portion of their extension, in particular if the first layer and the second layer have a curvature over their entire extension. Thus, the first layer and the second layer not only protrude outwardly, but also exhibit a curvature. Preferably, the curvature is convex in the direction of the plug seat. For example, the curvature can form a radius.

[0017] It is further provided that the first layer and the second layer have different curvatures at least in some sections. It is further provided that the first layer and the second layer in the latched position have a gap resulting from the different curvatures and that the first layer and the second layer separate from each other, i.e. increase in distance, when pivoted towards the release position.

[0018] In another embodiment of the connector, the first layer extends over a partial length of the latching arm, while the second layer extends over the entire length of the latching arm. Thus, the first layer is formed shorter than the second layer. In this way, it can be ensured that, when the connector is inserted into the terminal housing, mainly the second layer is deformed or only the second layer is deformed, and in particular the first layer remains substantially undeformed.

[0019] In particular, according to another embodiment, in order to ensure the greatest possible stability of the latching arm in the event of a deformation of the latching arm in the direction away from the release position, i.e. in the event of an attempt at release of the connector mounted in the terminal housing, it is provided that the second layer has at least one protrusion and the first layer extends substantially to the protrusion. The protrusion preferably serves to support the second layer when the second layer is pivoted in the pivoting direction away from the release position. In this case, the end edge of the first layer is supported on the protrusion, so that in particular from the point of support, the first layer and the second layer can only deform together or neither of the two layers can undergo further deformation. This increases the stability of the latching arm in the latched position. Preferably, the protrusion is formed by at least embossing of the second layer.

[0020] Optionally, it is provided that at least one positive connection is formed between the first layer and the second layer, which is designed in such a way that it engages and enables force transmission when the latching arm is pivoted away from the release position and is released when at least the second layer is pivoted in the direction towards the release position. For example, the positive connection is designed as a toothing. In particular, the first layer and / or the second layer has at least one protrusion or at least one recess for forming the toothing. When pivoted in the direction away from the release position, the first layer and the second layer positively interact with each other, so that they can only move together.

[0021] According to another embodiment of the connector, it is provided that the second layer is elastically deformed more than the first layer when the latching arm is pivoted in the direction towards the release position, in particular that only the second layer is elastically deformed when the latching arm is pivoted in the direction towards the release position. In particular, if the first layer is shorter than the second layer, different forces can act on the first layer and the second layer or the latching arm at different attachment points, so that the first layer and the second layer deform differently. Preferably, the first layer is not deformed at all when the latching arm is pivoted in the direction towards the release position, while only the second layer is elastically deformed.

[0022] In particular, in order to vary the spring force of the latching arm depending on the application of the electrical connector, according to a further embodiment it is provided that the first layer and the second layer are connected to each other by one or more connection points, in particular by one or more connection points of material bonding. Preferably, it is provided that the first layer and the second layer are welded to each other at the one or more connection points. The position of the connection points relative to the length of the latching arm enables, inter alia, the degree of separation to be adjusted and thus the strength of the spring force of the latching arm against deformation in the direction of the release position. If the connection points are oriented closer towards the free end of the latching arm, the spring force becomes greater. On the other hand, if the connection points are oriented further away from the free end of the latching arm, the spring force becomes weaker. It is also envisaged that the first layer and the second layer are connected to each other at a plurality of connection points.

[0023] In particular, according to a further embodiment, the production of the electrical connector is simplified, since the plug seat has at least one contact element, in particular one contact element inserted into at least one receiving slot. For example, the contact element is inserted into two receiving slots, one in each of the two opposite side walls of the plug seat. The contact element is inserted into the one or more receiving slots and is preferably welded to the base body.

[0024] For example, according to a further embodiment, it is provided that the contact element is made of a different material than the base body, in particular of stainless steel. This prevents slack from occurring in the contact element. Advantageously, the base body is made of copper or a copper alloy. The base body and the contact element are made of an electrically conductive metal. Optionally, it is also provided that the contact element and the base body are made of the same material, in particular that the contact element is formed from the same sheet metal material.

[0025] A further embodiment of the connector provides that the contact element has at least one contact arm. The contact arm can be deflected against the spring force, come into contact with the inserted plug sheet, preferably under the action of the spring force, and establish an electrical contact. The contact element preferably has a base plate from which the contact arm extends at an angle. In the assembled state, the contact arm preferably extends into the free space of the plug seat. The contact arm preferably has its free end oriented in the direction of the connection portion.

[0026] Advantageously, in order to increase the number of possible mating operations, according to a further embodiment, provision is made for the contact arm to have a coating on at least a portion of its surface, in particular the coating is applied to the contact arm or at least to a portion of the surface of the contact arm by means of roll cladding or an additive manufacturing process. Preferably, provision is made for the contact element to be completely coated. The coating provides wear protection for the contact arm, which increases the number of possible mating operations. For example, the coating is made of silver or a silver alloy. For example, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), electron beam melting (EBM), selective laser sintering (SLS), selective laser melting (SLM), metal binder jetting or nanoparticle jetting have proven to be advantageous additive manufacturing processes. It is also envisaged to deposit using other additive manufacturing processes. It is also envisaged for the connector to be completely coated by means of hot-dip tinning or galvanizing.

[0027] According to a further embodiment, the contact of the plug-in tab, which can be inserted into the plug-in seat, can be improved by providing the plug-in seat with a protrusion opposite the contact arm. If the plug-in tab is inserted into the plug-in seat, it preferably comes into contact between the protrusion and the contact arm. Preferably, provision is made for the protrusion to have a coating on at least a portion of its surface. In particular, the coating is applied to the protrusion by means of roll cladding or by means of an additive manufacturing process.

[0028] Preferably, the coating is applied to the protrusion in the state of the electrical connector blank, for example by means of roll cladding or an additive manufacturing process. The blank is then folded to form the connector and the final position of the coating is given on the protrusion or at least a portion of the surface of the protrusion.

[0029] Optionally, it is proposed for the latching arm to be formed as a double layer comprising a first layer and a second layer, and for the first layer and the second layer to be superimposed in an imaginary plane in which the latching arm pivots. Further optionally, it is proposed for the first layer and the second layer to be folded into one another from opposite end sides of a blank for the connector. Further optionally, provision is made for the first layer and the second layer to be superimposed and not connected at their free ends. These features can also be provided in combination with the aforementioned embodiments.

[0030] The task set out at the outset is further solved by a connector system having at least one terminal housing and at least one electrical connector. The electrical connector is designed according to one of the aforementioned embodiments. This is particularly advantageous if the connection plug system has a plurality of electrical connectors in the terminal housing. In this way, a connector system having a plurality of electrical contacts can be contacted.

[0031] In the housing, a separate seat opening is provided for each connector. The seat opening is preferably dimensioned in such a way that, when the connector is inserted into the seat opening, only a portion of the latching arm is deflected, in particular only the second layer is deflected.

[0039] With respect to the following description, it is to be understood that the application is not limited to the specific embodiments described and illustrated herein, and therefore, is not limited to all or several of the described combinations of features. Rather, each individual partial feature of an embodiment example / of each embodiment example is also important to the subject matter of the application, independent of all other partial features described in connection with its own description, and can also be combined with any feature of another embodiment example.

[0040] Figure 1 An embodiment of an electrical connector 1 according to the present application is shown. The electrical connector 1 has a base body 2. The base body 2 has at least one contact portion 3 and at least one connection portion 4. The illustrated connection portion 4 is intended to be connected to an electrical conductor, in particular to a strand of an electrical cable, by crimping. A plug seat 5 is formed in the contact portion 3 for receiving at least one plug tab (not shown). Furthermore, the base body 2 has at least one latching arm 6 for fastening the electrical connector 1. The illustrated latching arm 6 is formed at least partially from a first layer 7 and a second layer 8 of sheet metal material of the base body 2. The latching arm 6 can be moved from its latching position (as shown in the figures) into an insertion position, in which the latching arm 6 is arranged at least partially in the base body 2. The latching arm 6 is intended to be inserted into a terminal housing (not shown) during assembly of the electrical connector 1. The latching arm 6 is intended to be latched in the terminal housing in the latching position. Figure 1overcomes the spring force at least in the direction of the release position (see Figure 2 The illustrated latching arm 6 projects outwardly from the contact portion 3. Figure 1 The illustrated latching arm 6 projects outwardly from the contact portion 3.

[0041] The electrical connector 1 according to Figure 1 The electrical connector 1 according to Figure 4 may be manufactured by folding a blank 9 for the electrical connector 1, for example, such as Figure 4 The first layer 7 can be arranged at a first end side 10 of the blank 9 and the second layer 8 can be arranged at a second end side 11 of the blank 9. During the manufacturing process, the first end side 10 and the second end side 11 are folded onto one another such that the first layer 7 and the second layer 8 are arranged one above the other in the region of the plug seat 5, as Figure 1

[0042] Figure 2 and Figure 3 shows the connector 1 in the terminal housing 12, in particular an embodiment of the connector 1 according to Figure 1 Figure 2 shows the connector 1 during insertion, whereas Figure 3 shows the connector 1 in the latching position in the terminal housing 12. As Figure 2 illustrated, at least a portion of the latching arm 6, namely the second layer 8, is pivoted from its latching position against the spring force in the direction of the release position during insertion of the seat opening 13 of the terminal housing 12. In this embodiment, the first layer 7 is not pivoted during insertion. To this end, the seat opening 13 is designed in such a way that only the second layer 8 is pivoted. In the release position of the latching arm 6, the connector 1 can be inserted into the seat opening 13 along its longitudinal direction (X direction according to Figure 2 The first layer 7 and the second layer 8 are separated from one another, since only the second layer 8 is elastically deformed, according to Figure 2

[0043] In Figure 3 , the connector 1 is shown in a position fixed in the seat opening 13 of the terminal housing 12. The latching arm 6, in particular the second layer 8 of the latching arm 6, rests against the latching edge 14 of the recess 15. If an attempt is made to pull the electrical connector 1 out of the terminal housing 12 against its insertion direction (see arrow in Figure 2 , this is prevented by the interaction of the latching arm 6 with the latching edge 14.

[0044] As can be seen in particular from Figure 2 , the second layer 8 has a protrusion 16 arranged at its free end. In the latching position of the latching arm 6, for example according to Figure 1 , the first layer 7 extends to the protrusion 16. According to Figure 3 During the attempt to pull out, the first layer 7, in particular the end edge 17 of the first layer 7, supports itself on the protrusion 16, so that the first layer 7 and the second layer 8 will be jointly loaded when pivoting away from the release position. Thus, the first layer 7 supports the second layer 8, increases the force exerted by the latching arm 6 and increases the stability of the latching arm 6.

[0045] As Figure 1 , Figure 2 and Figure 3 illustrated, the first layer 7 and the second layer 8 are connected together at the connection point 18, for example by spot welding. The connection point 18 ensures that the separation of the first layer 7 from the second layer 8 occurs at most to the connection point 18. In this way, the degree of separation (and thus the strength of the spring force of the latching arm 6) can be adjusted by the position of the connection point 18. If the connection point 18 were to be moved in the direction towards the free end of the latching arm 6, the spring force would increase when pivoting in the direction towards the release position.

[0046] Figure 4 A blank 9 for an electrical connector 1 according to, for example, Figure 1 , Figure 2 and Figure 3 is shown. The blank 9 is essentially folded about an axis X to produce the electrical connector 1. In the process, the opposite end sides 10, 11 are moved towards each other and the first layer 7 is folded over the second layer 8. The first layer 7 is formed shorter than the second layer 8.

[0047] Figures 1 to 3 An electrical connector 1 in a fully assembled state is shown. Figure 5 An electrical connector 1 in a partially assembled state is shown. According to Figures 1 to 3 and Figure 5 , in the region of the plug seat 5, a receiving slot 19 is formed in both the first side wall 20 and the opposite second side wall 21, respectively. A contact element 22 is inserted into the receiving slot 19 and connected to the base body 2. The illustrated contact element 22 is connected to the side walls 20, 21 in a material-fit manner by spot welding 23. The contact element 22 limits the plug seat 5 on one side. The contact element 22 has a contact arm 24, the free end of which extends in the direction of the connection portion 4. The contact arm 24 has at least one coating 25 oriented in the direction of the plug seat 5 and, in the event of insertion of a plug-in tab (not shown), is connected to the plug-in tab.

[0048] Figure 6 is Figure 1End view of the fully assembled electrical connector. Here it can be clearly seen how the contact arms 24 extend into the plug seat 5. Furthermore, it can be seen that the base body 2 has a protrusion 26 arranged in the connector seat 5 opposite the contact arms 24. When a plug-in tab (not shown) is inserted into the plug seat, the plug-in tab is clamped between the protrusion 26 and the contact arms 24. In this embodiment, the plug seat 5 has a substantially square cross-section. The latching arms 6 extend outwards. The connector part 4 is still not crimped. The first layer 7 and the second layer 8 are arranged one above the other, either from the pivoting direction V of the latching arms 6 or from the Y-axis arranged perpendicular to the X-axis.

[0049] The application is not limited to the embodiments shown and described, but also includes all embodiments which have the same effect in the meaning of the application. It is expressly emphasized that the embodiments are not limited to the combination of all features. Rather, each individual sub-feature can also have inventive significance independently of all other sub-features. Furthermore, the application is also not limited to the combination of the features described and illustrated here, but can also be defined by any other combination of certain features of all individual features disclosed as a whole. This means that, in principle, virtually any single feature can be omitted or replaced by at least one single feature disclosed elsewhere in this application.
