Abstract
Description
[0001] Priority declaration
[0002] This application claims priority to French Patent Application No. 2011618 filed on November 12, 2020, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety to the maximum extent permitted by law. Technical Field
[0003] The present disclosure relates generally to electronic devices and, more particularly, to smart cards. Background Art
[0004] Many applications use smart cards, such as payment cards, transportation cards, personal identification cards, etc. Among current smart cards, cards equipped with biometric sensors are particularly well known. Biometric sensors generally enable authentication to be performed, for example, for each use of the card.
[0005] To this end, a smart card equipped with a biometric sensor must undergo a registration step for its legitimate user. The registration step includes obtaining biometric data of a legitimate user of the card through the biometric sensor, such as data representing the user's fingerprint when the biometric sensor is a fingerprint sensor. These biometric data, called reference data, are recorded in the card so that during subsequent use of the card (for example, in order to enable payment after the card has obtained the biometric data of the current user of the card), the acquired biometric data can be compared with the reference biometric data. If the acquired biometric data corresponds to the reference biometric data, the current user of the card is identified as a legitimate user of the card, i.e. a registered user, and the current operation, such as payment, is enabled as being valid. On the contrary, if the acquired biometric data does not correspond to the reference biometric data, the current user of the card is identified as a fraudulent user, and the current operation, such as payment, is disabled as being invalid.
[0006] Devices configured to cooperate with smart cards comprising biometric sensors are known. These known devices comprise a battery for powering the card, for example during the registration phase. Furthermore, in order to guide the user, for example during the registration phase, these devices may comprise a light emitting diode (LED) controlled by the card. These devices may also not comprise a light emitting diode, which is then provided on the card, which increases the complexity of the card and its manufacture.
[0007] There is a need to overcome all or some of the disadvantages of the known devices described above.
[0008] For example, it is desirable to provide a device configured to power a smart card including a biometric sensor, the smart card not including a battery. It is also desirable, for example, that such a device include a light emitting diode that can be controlled by the smart card, particularly during the card registration phase. [0033] Unless otherwise stated, the expressions "about", "approximately", "substantially" and "on the order of..." mean within 10%, preferably within 5%.
[0034] In the following description, unless otherwise specified, when one terminal of a first component is coupled, e.g., connected, to a first node, the other end of the first component is coupled, e.g., connected, to one terminal of a second component, and the other terminal of the second component is coupled, e.g., connected, to a second node, the first and second components are referred to as being connected in series between the first and second nodes, even if a current flowing through the first component is different from a current flowing through the second component.
[0035] An example of a smart card 1 with a biometric sensor 2 of the type to which the described embodiments are applicable is shown very schematically in a top view.
[0036] Typically, the card 1 has a substantially rectangular shape in top view. For example, the card 1 has a width in top view equal to 53.98 mm, which is for example in accordance with the ISO / IEC 7816-1 standard. For example, the card 1 has a thickness (perpendicular to the card 1) equal to 0.76 mm. Figure 1 Plane measurement), which complies with the ISO / IEC 7816-1 standard, for example.
[0037] The card 1 comprises an electrical contact surface 3. Preferably, the surface 3 has a substantially rectangular shape in a top view. Preferably, in a top view, the long sides of the card 1 are parallel to the long sides of the surface 3 and the short sides of the card 1 are parallel to the short sides of the surface 3. For example, in a top view, the surface 3 has a width equal to 9.23 mm and a length equal to 9.62 mm, for example in accordance with the ISO / IEC 7816-1 standard. For example, the surface 3 is 1.5 mm from the long side of the card 1 (at Figure 1 9.07mm from the top of card 1 and 9.07mm from the short side of card 1 (at Figure 1 on the left side) 10.25 mm, which complies with the ISO / IEC 7816-1 standard, for example.
[0038] The surface 3 includes a plurality of electrical contact areas, for example, eight contact areas C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7 and C8. For example, the areas C1, C2, C3, C4 are arranged in sequence along the short side of the surface 3, and the areas C5, C6, C7 and C8 are arranged in sequence along the other short side of the card 1. For example, the area C1 is located at the corner of the surface 3, and the area is closest to one corner of the card 1 ( Figure 1 ).
[0039] In particular, contact area C1 is configured to receive a voltage for powering card 1, contact area C5 is configured to receive a reference voltage of card 1, typically ground, and contact area C7 is configured to be used as a tri-state output by card 1. In other words, card 1 is configured to selectively: apply a high voltage to output C7, which is typically equal to the power supply voltage received on area C1; apply a low voltage to output C7, which is typically equal to the reference voltage received on area C5; and place output C7 in a high impedance state, or in other words, no voltage is applied to output C7, which is then in a floating state.
[0040] For example, the contact area C1 is configured to receive a supply voltage referenced to a reference voltage in the range of 4.75V to 5.25V, which is compatible with a Type A card of the ISO / IEC 7816-3 standard.
[0041] For example, contact zone C7 corresponds to an input / output of card 1 of the general purpose input / output or GPIO type.
[0042] For example, the contact areas C1 , C5 , and C7 correspond to the contacts C1 , C5 , and C7 of the ISO / IEC 7816-2 and ISO / IEC 7816-3 standards.
[0043] As an example, the contact area C3 is configured to receive a clock signal, the contact area C3 corresponding to the contact portion C3 of the ISO / IEC 7816-2 and ISO / IEC 7816-3 standards, for example.
[0044] As an example, the contact area C2 is configured to receive the initialization signal, the contact area C2 corresponding to the contact portion C2 of the ISO / IEC 7816-2 and ISO / IEC 7816-3 standards, for example.
[0045] For example, the contact areas C4, C6 and C8 correspond to the contact portions C4, C6 and C8 of the ISO / IEC 7816-2 and ISO / IEC 7816-3 standards.
[0046] Although Figure 1 The case where the surface 3 is arranged on the upper surface side of the card 1 is shown and is therefore visible in a top view, but in other cards 1 this surface 3 is arranged on the lower surface side 1 of the card.
[0047] The biometric sensor 2 is preferably a fingerprint sensor. Figure 1 In the example of FIG. 1 , the sensor 2 is arranged on the same side of the card 1 as the electrical contact surface 3, i.e. Figure 1 However, the elements 2 and 3 may be both arranged on the lower surface side of the card 1, or may be respectively arranged on two different surfaces of the card 1.
[0048] By way of example, the card 1 does not comprise a light emitting diode and therefore cannot display information or light signals of its own to the user, for example during a registration phase.
[0049] Figure 2 An embodiment of a device 4 is shown very schematically in a top view, which is configured to Figure 1 Medium type of card collaboration, for example, with Figure 2 As shown in Figure 1 Card 1 collaboration.
[0050] The device 4 comprises two nodes 400 and 402. The node 400 is configured to receive a power supply voltage Vcc. The node 402 is configured to receive a reference voltage Gnd. The voltage Vcc is referenced to the potential of the node 402.
[0051] The device 4 further comprises a connector 5, here shown in block form. The connector 5 is configured to receive the card 1, or in other words, to mate with the card 1. For example, the connector 5 is configured such that the card 1 can be at least partially inserted into the connector 5, for example such that when the card 1 is inserted into the connector 5, the electrical contact surface 3 of the card 1 is located inside the connector 5, and preferably such that the sensor 2 remains located outside the connector 5 to remain accessible to a user.
[0052] The connector 5 comprises electrical contacts which are configured to come into contact with corresponding electrical contact surfaces 3 of the card 1 when the card 1 is arranged, for example inserted, into the connector 5. Figure 2 The portion of the card 1 inserted into the connector 5 , the contact surface 3 of the card 1 , and the contact area defined in the surface 3 are shown in dotted lines.
[0053] More specifically, connector 5 includes: when card 1 is inserted into connector 5, contact portion 501 is configured to contact contact area C1 of card 1, contact portion 505 is configured to contact contact area C5 of card 1, and contact portion 507 is configured to contact contact area C7 of card 1.
[0054] The device 4 further comprises a light emitting diode LED1 and a light emitting diode LED2. The anode of the diode LED1 is coupled (e.g. connected) to the contact 507 of the connector 5, and its cathode is coupled (e.g. connected) to the node 402. The cathode of the diode LED2 is coupled (e.g. connected) to the contact 507, and its anode is coupled (e.g. connected) to the node 400.
[0055] According to one embodiment, one of the diodes LED1 and LED2, for example, the diode LED1, is configured to emit red light, and the other of the diodes LED1 and LED2, for example, the diode LED2, is configured to emit green light.
[0056] Preferably, the device 4 does not include a battery. The device 4 is then configured to be coupled to a power source having the device 4 coupled thereto such that the voltages Vcc and Gnd are transmitted to respective nodes 400 and 402 from the power source.
[0057] In the device 4, the node 400 is coupled, preferably connected, to the contact 501 and the node 402 is coupled, preferably connected, to the contact 505. Thus, when the voltage Vcc is present at the node 400 and the reference voltage Gnd is present at the node 402, the card 1 receives these voltages Vcc and Gnd at its respective contact areas C1 and C5. As a result, the card 1 is powered by the device 4 and more specifically by the voltage Vcc.
[0058] Furthermore, in the device 4, when the card 1 is powered by the voltage Vcc, the card 1 is able to control the diodes LED1 and LED2, and more specifically, the card 1 is able to control the diodes LED1 and LED2 through its output C7. In fact, the threshold voltages of the diodes LED1 and LED2 are actually lower than the power supply voltage Vcc, whereby: when the card 1 applies the reference voltage Gnd to its output C7, the diode LED2 emits light and the diode LED1 is turned off; when the card 1 applies the power supply voltage Vcc to its output C7, the diode LED2 is turned off and the diode LED1 emits light; when the card 1 sets its output C7 to a high impedance state, both the diodes LED1 and LED2 are turned off.
[0059] According to one embodiment, resistor R1 is connected in series with diode LED1 between node 402 and contact 507, and resistor R2 is connected in series with diode LED2 between node 400 and contact 507. Resistor R1 can limit the current flow through diode LED1 when it is emitting light, and resistor R2 can limit the current flow through diode LED2 when it is emitting light.
[0060] For example, the cathode of the diode LED1 is coupled to the node 402 through the resistor R1 , a first end of the resistor R1 is connected to the cathode of the diode LED1 and a second end of the resistor R1 is connected to the node 402 .
[0061] For example, the anode of the diode LED2 is coupled to the node 400 through the resistor R2 , a first end of the resistor R2 is connected to the anode of the diode LED2 , and a second end of the resistor R2 is connected to the node 400 .
[0062] According to one embodiment, the resistor R3 is connected between the cathode of the diode LED1 and the anode of the diode LED2. For example, one end of the resistor R3 is connected to the cathode of the diode LED1, and the other end of the resistor R3 is connected to the anode of the diode LED2. When the contact area C7 is in a high impedance state, the resistor R3 can prevent the two diodes LED1 and LED2 from being turned on at the same time.
[0063] According to one embodiment, the card 1 implements the registration phase when the card 1 receives a voltage Vcc on the contact area C1, a voltage Gnd on the contact area C5, a reference voltage Gnd or a voltage Vcc on the contact area C3, and a voltage Vcc on the area C2. In this case, the connector 5 also includes a contact portion 503 configured to contact the contact area C3 and a contact portion 502 configured to contact the contact area C2 when the card 1 is received by the connector 5. Then the node 402 or the node 400 is connected to the contact portion 503, so that the voltage Gnd or Vcc is applied to the contact area 503. Figure 2In the example of , contact 503 is connected to node 402. Furthermore, node 400 is then connected to contact 502, so that voltage Vcc is applied to contact area C2. Insertion of card 1 into connector 5 of device 4 is then sufficient to trigger the implementation of the card 1 registration phase.
[0064] As an example, in device 4: diode LED1 is configured to emit red light, and its threshold voltage is equal to 1.8V; diode LED2 is configured to emit green light, and its threshold voltage is equal to 1.9V; the value of resistor R1 is equal to 180Ohms; the value of resistor R2 is equal to 220Ohms; the value of resistor R3 is equal to 220Ohms.
[0065] However, the device 4 is not limited to the examples of values given above, and it is within the ability of a person skilled in the art to determine the value of the resistor so that when the voltage Vcc exists on the region C7, only the diode LED1 is turned on, when the voltage Gnd exists on the region C7, only the diode LED2 is turned on, and when the C high impedance state exists on the region C7, both the diodes LED1 and LED2 are turned off. For example, the value of the resistor may depend on the value of the voltage Vcc, the conduction threshold of the diodes LED1 and LED2, and the brightness required for each of the diodes LED1 and LED2.
[0066] Although this is not shown, according to one embodiment, the device 4 comprises a package. The package is configured to allow receiving a card via the connector 5 and to enable a user to see the light emitted by the diodes LED1 and LED2. Furthermore, all connections between the electrical contacts 501, 505, 507 and possibly 502 and / or 503, possible resistors R1, R2 and R3, the diodes LED1 and LED2 and the nodes 400 and 402 are arranged within the package. Furthermore, possible resistors R1, R2 and R3 and the nodes 400 and 402 are arranged in the package.
[0067] For example, the connection terminals of the diodes LED1 and LED2 are arranged inside the package, and parts of the diodes LED1 and LED2 are arranged outside the package, so that the light emitted by the diodes LED1 and LED2 is visible to the user. For another example, the diodes LED1 and LED2 are arranged as a whole inside the package, and the part of the package opposite to the diodes LED1 and LED2 is transparent to the light emitted by the diodes LED1 and LED2, so that the light emitted by the diodes LED1 and LED2 is visible to the user.
[0068] As an example, the connector 5 is completely arranged in a package, which includes a slot through which the card 1 can be inserted into the connector 5. According to another example, a portion of the connector 5 is exposed from the package 5 and includes a channel to insert the card 1 into the connector 5.
[0069] The implementation of such encapsulation is within the capabilities of those skilled in the art.
[0070] Figure 3 A further embodiment of a device 4 is shown very schematically in a top view.
[0071] More precisely, Figure 3 The device 4 includes a plurality of Figure 2 The same elements as those of the device 4 will not be described again, and for Figure 2 All contents indicated in the description of device 4 apply to Figure 3 Device 4.
[0072] However, Figure 3 Device 4 with Figure 2 The device differs in that it further comprises a connector 6.
[0073] Connector 6 is configured to connect to a power source ( Figure 3 The connector 6 is connected to a power source (not shown), i.e., connected to a power source. Therefore, the connector 6 receives a power supply voltage from the power source. As an example, the connector 6 includes at least two terminals or electrical contacts 600 and 602, the contact 600 is configured to receive a power supply voltage Vcc1 from the power source and the contact 602 is configured to receive a reference voltage, such as a voltage Gnd, from the power source.
[0074] Connector 6 is configured to transmit a power supply voltage Vcc to node 400 and a voltage Gnd to node 402 based on voltages Vcc1 and Gnd transmitted by a power supply having connector 6 coupled thereto. Apparatus 4 preferably does not include a battery. For example, connector 6 is coupled (e.g., connected) to nodes 400 and 402.
[0075] According to one embodiment, the connector 6 is a universal serial bus or USB type connector, such as a male connector. In this case, the terminals 600 and 602 of the connector 6 are intended to cooperate with corresponding terminals of a USB type connector (e.g., a female connector) that is complementary to the connector 6. In addition, although this is not shown, the connector 6 may then include other terminals or contacts that are intended to cooperate with corresponding terminals or contacts of a USB connector that is complementary to the connector 6.
[0076] One advantage of providing a USB type connector 6 is that a very large number of devices can be used as a power source, such as computers, especially laptop computers, mobile phones with USB functions, USB rechargeable batteries, USB chargers, etc.
[0077] According to one embodiment, in particular when the connector 6 is a USB connector, the connector 6 includes an interface circuit 604. The interface circuit 604 is configured to receive a power supply transmitted by a power source, wherein the power source has the connector 6 coupled thereto, and based on the power source, transmit the voltages Vcc and Gnd to the corresponding nodes 400 and 402. As an example, the circuit 604 is coupled (e.g., connected) to the contacts 600 and 602 of the connector 6, and the nodes 400 and 402. For example, when the voltage Vcc1 is greater than the power supply voltage Vcc of the card 1, the circuit 604 is configured to generate a voltage Vcc having a value suitable for the card 1 based on the voltage Vcc1, and then the circuit 604 includes, for example, a DC / DC voltage converter.
[0078] According to an embodiment in which the device 4 comprises a package, the connector 6 is at least partially arranged inside the package, and the package is configured to allow the connector 6 to couple with a connector complementary to the power supply. For example, the connector 6 is a male connector, comprising a portion arranged outside the package, provided with the contacts 600 and 602, and a portion arranged inside the package, for example comprising the circuit 604.
[0079] Various embodiments and variants have been described. A person skilled in the art will appreciate that certain features of these various embodiments and variants may be combined and that other variants may occur to a person skilled in the art. In particular, although the device 4 has been described in the context of cooperating with a card 1, in particular when the card 1 complies with the ISO / IEC 7816-1, 7816-2 and 7816-3 standards, a person skilled in the art may adapt the device 4 to a smart card having a biometric sensor that is different from the card 1, for example, it includes an LED and / or it does not comply with the above standards. In addition, the device 4 capable of powering the smart card and sending light information to the user under the control of the card can be used during other operating phases than the registration phase, for example, to indicate when the card 1 is inserted into the device 4, whether the finger appearing on the sensor 2 corresponds to the fingerprint recorded in the card 1 in the previous registration phase. The device 4 can also be used with a smart card similar to the card 1 but not including the sensor 2.
[0080] Finally, based on the functional indications given above, the practical implementation of the described embodiments and variants is within the capabilities of a person skilled in the art. In particular, the programming of the smart card is within the capabilities of a person skilled in the art, for example by consulting the technical specifications and / or the user manual of the card, in particular so that the smart card drives the diodes LED1 and LED2 when the smart card is connected to the device 4.
