[0006] Articles of footwear generally include an upper and a sole structure. The upper can be formed from any suitable material or materials and functions to receive, secure, and support a foot. A lower portion of the upper proximate to a bottom surface of the foot is attached to the sole structure. The sole structure generally includes a layered arrangement extending between an outsole and a midsole, the outsole providing wear resistance and ground-gripping traction, the midsole disposed between the outsole and the upper for providing cushioning to the foot.

[0007] The upper can cooperate with laces, straps, or other fasteners to adjust the fit of the upper around the foot. For example, laces can be tightened to close the upper around the foot and tied once the desired fit of the upper around the foot is achieved. Each time the laces are tied, care must be taken to ensure that the upper is not too loose or too tight around the foot. In addition, the laces can come untied or unloosen during the course of wearing the footwear. While fasteners such as hook and loop fasteners are easier and faster to operate than traditional laces, these fasteners are prone to wear over time and require more attention to achieve the desired tension in securing the upper to the foot.

Furthermore, these automatic tightening systems provide a constant tensioning force along the length of the one or more cords such that rotation of the rotatable knob causes the entire cord to be uniformly tightened. In situations where it can be desirable to tighten a first region of the upper at a different rate than a second region of the upper, additional cords and tightening mechanisms must be incorporated and controlled individually.

[0009] Accordingly, known automatic tightening systems lack suitable means for quickly and variably adjusting the tension in the cords to close the upper around the foot and quickly releasing the tension applied to the cords so that the upper can quickly loosen for removal of the footwear from the foot. Furthermore, the tightening mechanisms employed by these known automatic tightening systems need to be incorporated onto the exterior of the upper so that the wearer can access the tightening mechanism to adjust the fit of the upper around the foot, thereby detracting from the overall appearance and aesthetics of the shoe. An article of footwear comprising: an upper defining an interior space and having a medial side and a lateral side; a sole structure attached to the upper and having a top surface facing the interior space and a bottom surface engaging a ground surface formed on an opposite side of the sole structure from the top surface; a flap extending in a direction from the sole structure at one of the medial side and the lateral side toward the other of the medial side and the lateral side, the flap including a first end secured to the sole structure and a second end opposite the first end, the second end being a free end of the flap movable relative to the upper; and a first cord having a first portion extending from the other of the medial side and the lateral side to the flap and a second portion extending from the flap to the other of the medial side and the lateral side, the first cord operable to pull the flap toward the other of the medial side and the lateral side when moved from a relaxed state to a cinched state.

2. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein, the first cord includes a third portion extending from the other of the medial side and the lateral side to the flap.

3. The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein, the third portion is secured to an anchor point of the flap.

4. The article of footwear of claim 3, further comprising a first cord guide attached to the flap, the first cord engaging the first cord guide between the first portion and the second portion.

An article of footwear comprising: an upper defining an interior space and having a medial side and a lateral side; a sole structure attached to the upper and having a top surface facing the interior space and a bottom surface engaging a ground surface formed on an opposite side of the sole structure from the top surface; a flap extending in a direction from the sole structure at one of the medial side and the lateral side toward the other of the medial side and the lateral side, the flap including a first end secured to the sole structure and a second end opposite the first end, the second end being a free end of the flap movable relative to the upper; and a first cord extending between the sole structure and the flap in a tortuous path and operable to pull the flap toward the other of the medial side and the lateral side when moved from a relaxed state to a cinched state. ​ 12.
