Description

[0001] Cross-reference to related applications

[0002] This application claims the benefits of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 092,626, filed October 16, 2020, and U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 188,304, filed May 13, 2021, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. Technical Field

[0003] This invention generally relates to a fastening pull tab, particularly an adhesive tape assembly, that can be used in conjunction with disposable absorbent articles (such as diapers) and other applications. Therefore, this invention provides enhanced or improved capabilities for adhesive tape assemblies. Background Technology

[0004] Fastening tabs can be used in conjunction with disposable absorbent articles (such as diapers) and other applications. Disposable absorbent articles (such as baby diapers and / or adult incontinence diapers) are widely known in the art. In many cases, disposable articles (e.g., diaper chassis) consist of a liquid-absorbent core (facilitating fluid separation from the user) enclosed between a liquid-permeable upper sheet (located near the wearer when the disposable article is worn) and a liquid-impermeable back sheet (forming the outer surface of the disposable article when worn, which may be a non-woven fabric laminated with an impermeable layer (such as a polyethylene film)). Disposable articles typically include a rear portion intended to cover the back of the wearer, a front portion intended to cover the front of the wearer, and a crotch portion located between the rear and front portions.

[0005] Disposable items come in reusable forms (which must be washed between uses) or single-use forms. Single-use forms include one or more adhesive tape assemblies, typically used to keep the used diaper in a "rolled-up" shape after use for easy handling and disposal. This disposal tape needs to be bonded to the outside of the diaper. However, the outer surface of diapers is designed to be increasingly soft, requiring a soft yet strong adhesive to bond well with the non-woven portion of the diaper. While the adhesive bonding of the disposal tape can produce an acceptable bond with the non-woven diaper backing, it can cause problems such as clogging within the roll of the adhesive tape assembly.

[0006] Conventional treatment tapes are typically stored in rolls. Such conventional treatment tapes consist of: a nonwoven layer with a release layer on one surface and a polymer layer on the other surface of the nonwoven layer; and an adhesive layer disposed on the surface of the polymer layer away from the nonwoven layer. This configuration of treatment tapes is prone to clogging or damage when a layer of treatment tape is removed from an adjacent layer. Although the release layer is designed to protect the underlying structure, it does not completely cover the underlying nonwoven layer due to the absorbent nature of the nonwoven material. Therefore, a portion of the adhesive layer tends to penetrate into the adjacent nonwoven material. When a layer is removed from an adjacent layer, for example, when unwinding the roll or removing a sheet of tape, the release force increases, and when the adhesive layer is released from the nonwoven material, some nonwoven fibers are undesirably pulled out. This leads to tape damage and prevents the tape from being cleanly unwound from the roll. In some cases, the tape may even break, or it may be impossible to fully unwrap the tape without damaging it.

[0007] Fasteners are typically used to attach disposable items to provide a strong and durable bond. Several techniques have been employed to achieve this bond, including mechanical bonding processes and the use of high-strength adhesives. However, difficulties may arise in developing fastening systems capable of allowing a limited degree of elongation and / or stretching. This limitation on the extent of elongation and / or stretching is particularly desirable for diapers designed for children, as significantly elongated fasteners could pose a choking hazard to young children. Some regions have regulations limiting the permissible total elongation of fastener systems; for example, some international toy regulations limit the permissible total elongation to below 200 mm. A method is desired to reduce the amount of elongation of the fastening band assembly while providing the typical strength of the fastening band assembly. Furthermore, greater flexibility due to a thinner film than current systems is also expected. Additionally, less plastic deformation compared to current cast polypropylene (PP) constructions, and improved aesthetics when the band is applied to the diaper, are also desirable. Furthermore, a band that does not cause clogging is also needed. Therefore, a fastening belt assembly with at least one of these properties is still needed. Summary of the Invention

[0030] Various aspects of the present invention are disclosed in the following description and accompanying drawings, which relate to specific embodiments of the invention. Alternative embodiments may be devised without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Furthermore, well-known elements in exemplary embodiments of the invention will not be described in detail or will be omitted to avoid obscuring relevant details of the invention. In addition, for ease of understanding of the description, several terms used herein are discussed below.

[0031] As used herein, the term "exemplary" means "as an example, instance, or illustration." The embodiments described herein are not limiting but merely exemplary. It should be understood that the described embodiments are not necessarily to be construed as being more preferred or advantageous than other embodiments. Furthermore, the terms "embodiments of the invention," "embodiments," or "invention" do not require that all embodiments of the invention include the features, advantages, or modes of operation discussed.

[0032] The fastening strap assembly includes a carrier component. The carrier component includes a non-woven layer, a polymer film layer, and an adhesive layer. The non-woven layer has a first side and a second side facing each other. The polymer film layer has a first side and a second side facing each other. In some embodiments, the second side of the polymer film layer is at least partially disposed on the first side of the non-woven layer. In some embodiments, the polymer film layer is completely or substantially completely disposed on the first side of the non-woven layer. In some embodiments, the adhesive layer is at least partially disposed on the second side of the non-woven layer. In some embodiments, the adhesive layer is completely or substantially completely disposed on the second side of the non-woven layer. In some embodiments, a release layer is at least partially disposed on the first side of the polymer film layer. In some embodiments, the release layer is completely or substantially completely disposed on the first side of the polymer film layer.

[0033] As previously mentioned, conventional tapes suffer from the drawback of clogging, which occurs when the adhesive from one tape layer migrates into the nonwoven material of the adjacent tape layer. "Clogging," as used herein, refers to the inability or difficulty of removing one layer of tape from another without defects due to increased bonding strength between the layers. Without clogging, one layer of tape can be easily removed from an adjacent tape layer without requiring significant force. Clogging occurs when the bonding between layers increases, requiring greater force to separate these layers. If the bonding between layers is sufficiently high, the unwinding process of the tape roll may stall. In some cases, the available tension may concentrate at one or more locations on the tape or at the tape edges, potentially causing damage or breakage at or near these locations. It was unexpectedly discovered that clogging can be overcome by orienting the nonwoven layer between the polymer film and the adhesive layer, and by placing the release layer on the side of the polymer layer opposite to the nonwoven material. Thus, the adhesive layer of the first layer of the fastening tape assembly is separated from the nonwoven layer of the second adjacent layer of the fastening tape assembly by both the release layer and the polymer film. In this configuration, the adhesive cannot penetrate into the nonwoven layer of the second fastening tape assembly. Therefore, when removing an adjacent first layer of the fastening band assembly, the non-woven layer of the underlying second layer of the fastening band assembly remains intact because the non-woven fibers of the underlying second layer are not pulled out by the adhesive of the first layer. Since blockage is reduced or non-occurring, each layer of the fastening band assembly can be removed cleanly or substantially cleanly from the adjacent fastening band assembly layers.

[0034] The nonwoven layer can be made of any suitable material. In many embodiments, the nonwoven layer includes spunbond nonwovens, carded nonwovens, spunlace nonwovens, meltblown nonwovens, or combinations thereof. The nonwoven layer may also include other nonwovens not described herein. In many embodiments, the thickness of the nonwoven material ranges from 10 to 70 gsm (grams per square meter). In some embodiments, the thickness of the nonwoven material ranges from 20 to 60 gsm. In some embodiments, the thickness of the nonwoven material ranges from 30 to 50 gsm.

[0035] The polymer film can be made of any suitable material. In several embodiments, the polymer film includes polyolefins such as polypropylene, biaxially oriented polypropylene, polyethylene, or combinations thereof. In several embodiments, the polymer film includes polypropylene, biaxially oriented polypropylene, polyethylene, or combinations thereof. In many embodiments, the adhesive layer includes acrylic adhesives, rubber adhesives, silicone adhesives, or combinations thereof. In many embodiments, the polymer film includes polypropylene, biaxially oriented polypropylene, polyethylene, or combinations thereof. In many embodiments, the thickness of the polymer film ranges from 5 to 50 gsm. In some embodiments, the thickness of the polymer film ranges from 10 to 40 gsm. In other embodiments, the thickness of the polymer film ranges from 15 to 35 gsm.

[0036] In many embodiments, the adhesive layer comprises an acrylic adhesive, a rubber adhesive, a silicone adhesive, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the rubber adhesive comprises poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) (SBS), poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) (SIS), styrene-butadiene (SB), or a combination thereof. In many embodiments, the adhesive layer is pressure-sensitive. In some embodiments, the adhesive layer is patterned. "Patterned" as used herein refers to the deposition or formation of a pattern in a discontinuous configuration of the adhesive. The pattern may be uniform, non-uniform, symmetrical, or asymmetrical. In some embodiments, the adhesive layer is continuous or substantially continuous.

[0037] The release layer can be made of any suitable material. In some embodiments, the release layer comprises silicone, a fluoropolymer, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the release layer comprises silicone. While silicone release layers can be used, other release layers are also conceivable. In some embodiments, the release layer is at least partially bonded to a first side of the polymer film layer using heat. In some embodiments, the release layer is completely or substantially completely bonded to the first side of the polymer film layer using heat. In some embodiments, the release layer is at least partially bonded to the first side of the polymer film layer using ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) curing. In some embodiments, the release layer is completely or substantially completely bonded to the first side of the polymer film layer using UV or IR curing.

[0038] The force required to remove one layer of the tape from another is affected by at least one of the adhesive type and the amount of silicone in the tape. Surprisingly, it was found that the amount of silicone required for current fastening tape assemblies is significantly less than that required for conventional tapes. In some embodiments, the release coating weight of the fastening tape assembly is 3 to 6 times less than the silicone coating weight of conventional non-woven tapes. In some embodiments, the release coating weight is less than 6 g / m. 2 In some embodiments, the release coating weight is less than 5 g / m³. 2 Less than 4g / m 2 Less than 3g / m 2 or less than 2g / m 2 .

[0127] The deployment release force of the fastening strap assembly according to various aspects of this disclosure was compared with the deployment release force of three different conventional straps. The conventional straps have a silicone-coated nonwoven fabric laminated with a polyolefin layer. An overview of the tested strap assemblies and comparative straps can be found in Table 1 below. As can be seen from Table 1, the same adhesive (PSA) was used in Examples 1 to 3; while in Comparative Examples 1, 2 and 3, and 4 and 5, different adhesives PSA-C1, PSA-C2, and PSA-C3 were used, respectively. Each adhesive used in the examples and comparative examples is a pressure-sensitive rubber-based adhesive. As shown in Table 1 below, the weight of the silicone coating on the straps of each comparative example is different. A Model 5943 tensile testing machine (manufactured by Instron Corporation, Massachusetts, USA) was used to perform unfolding and release tests on rolls of tape, each 66 mm wide, at an unfolding speed of 1000 mm / min. The tests were repeated every other week for each tape over a six-week period. Between tests, the tapes were stored at 50°C.

[0131] The results of the aging test can be found in Table 2 below. Figures 4 to 6 Found it.

[0132] Table 2. Deployment and Release Results

[0133] Example Comparative example result 1 Cleanly unfold 1 The nonwoven fabric was damaged at 6 weeks. 2 Cleanly unfold 2 The non-woven fabric was damaged after 3 weeks. 3 Cleanly unfold 3 Cleanly unfold 4 The non-woven fabric was damaged after 3 weeks. 5 Cleanly unfold

[0134] The aging results show that the belt assembly according to this disclosure can be cleanly unwound even after 6 weeks and even with a low silicone coating weight. In contrast, conventional belts experience at least partial transfer of the adhesive to the nonwoven fabric of adjacent belt layers, which undesirably causes the nonwoven fibers to be pulled out of the nonwoven layers during belt unwinding, thereby damaging the nonwoven fabric. Therefore, as shown in Table 2, conventional belts exhibit nonwoven fabric damage for belts with a medium silicone coating weight, and a high silicone coating weight is required for clean unwinding. Figure 5 and 6 The diagram shows the performance of the release force over different time intervals compared to the initial deployment release force for each example.

[0135] Elongation test

[0136] The total elongation of the Z-folded fastening band assembly according to an embodiment of this disclosure (Example 4) was compared with the total elongation of two conventional Z-folded bands (Comparative Examples 6 and 7). The construction materials of each Z-folded band are shown in Table 3 below. The nonwoven laminate of Example 4 is a fastening band assembly comprising a rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive layer adjacent to a nonwoven layer, the nonwoven being adjacent to a polyolefin polymer film, and the polymer film being adjacent to a silicone release layer. A Model 5943 tensile testing machine (manufactured by Instron Corporation, Massachusetts, USA) was used to test the elongation of a 13mm wide strip at an elongation rate of 1500mm / min. The increase in length measured at break or fracture of each strip was recorded. The total elongation of each strip was calculated by adding the increased strip length after elongation to the initial strip length. The results of the total elongation test are available in [the relevant section]. Figure 7 As shown in the figure. Example 4 (which includes the fastening band assembly of this disclosure as both a fastening component and a non-stretchable polyester extension component) has a significantly lower total elongation than Comparative Examples 6 and 7. From Figure 7 It can be seen that the total elongation of Comparative Example 6 is about four times that of Example 4, and the total elongation of Comparative Example 6 is more than twice that of Example 4.
