[0001] The invention relates to a light generating system comprising one or more light generating devices. The invention also relates to a lighting device comprising such a light generating system and a method for assembling such a light generating system. The invention also relates to a light guiding body for use in such a light generating system. Background Art
[0002] Modules including a light guide body are known in the art. For example, US2008036942A1 describes a backlight module including a frame having a plurality of side walls; a light guide plate accommodated in the frame, the light guide plate having a light incident surface; at least one spring element having a spring finger and a connecting arm connecting the spring finger and one side wall of the frame; and at least one radiating element arranged between the spring finger and the light incident surface. The width of the at least one radiating element is greater than the distance between the light incident surface and the spring finger in a free state. Summary of the invention
[0003] A light generating system may comprise a fixed light guide body arrangement, wherein the arrangement comprises a light guide body and a device support system, the device support system being configured to support the light generating device and the light guide body. In particular, the light guide body may be held in place and aligned with the light generating device by mechanical fixing. However, this may affect the optical performance of the light guide body, or cause it to degrade over time due to thermal and aging effects.
[0004] Therefore, one aspect of the present invention is to provide an alternative support system for a light guide body, which system preferably also at least partially obviates one or more of the above disadvantages. An object of the present invention may be to overcome or mitigate at least one of the disadvantages of the prior art, or to provide a useful alternative.
[0005] The invention is set out in the accompanying independent and dependent claims.
[0006] Therefore, in a first aspect, the present invention provides a light generating system, which includes one or more light generating devices configured to generate device light and a light guide body device. The light guide body device may include a light guide body and a support system. The light guide body may include a first face and a second face, and the first face and the second face may define the width (W) of the light guide body. In addition, the light guide body may include a first end and a second end, and the first end and the second end may define the height (H) of the light guide body. In particular, the light guide body may include a supporting structure that protrudes or is recessed relative to the first face. In particular, the first end may be configured to be in a light receiving relationship with one or more light generating devices. In particular, the light guide may be transmissive with respect to the device light.
[0007] In an embodiment, the support system may include a device support portion and a light guide body support portion. The device support portion may be configured to support one or more light generating devices. In an embodiment, the light guide body support portion includes one or more support elements, wherein a first support element of the support elements is configured to be in physical contact with the support structure at a device support position at a distance d from the first end. The first support element and the support structure may be particularly configured to fix the light guide body relative to the support system in a direction parallel to the height (H). Therefore, in an embodiment, the present invention provides a light generating system, which includes: (i) one or more light generating devices configured to generate device light, (ii) a light guide body device including a light guide body, and (iii) a support system; wherein: (A) the light guide body includes (a) a first surface and a second surface, (b) a first end and a second end, the first surface and the second surface define the width (W) of the light guide body, and the first end and the second end define the height (H) of the light guide body, wherein the light guide body includes a support structure protruding from the first surface or recessed relative to the first surface; wherein the first end is configured to be in a light receiving relationship with one or more light generating devices; and wherein the light guide body is transmissive to the device light; wherein the light guide body is tapered over a portion of the height (H) in a direction from the first end to the second end; wherein the light guide body includes A first tapered endpoint located at a first surface and a second tapered endpoint located at a second surface, wherein the first tapered endpoint and the second tapered endpoint define a point where the optical waveguide body stops tapering in a direction from the first end to the second end; wherein the optical waveguide body includes an expanded end element; and (B) a support system includes (a) an equipment support portion and (b) an optical waveguide body support portion; wherein the equipment support portion is configured to support one or more light generating devices; wherein the optical waveguide body support portion includes one or more support elements; wherein a first support element of the one or more support elements is configured to be in physical contact with a support structure at a device support position at a distance d from the first end, wherein 0≤(d / H)<1; and wherein the first support element and the support structure are configured to fix the optical waveguide body relative to the support system in a direction parallel to a height (H).
[0008] Throughout the application, the above-mentioned support structure protruding or recessed relative to the first face may be expressed as the above-mentioned support structure protruding from the first face or recessed relative to the first face. Therefore, the support structure may be located on the first face and protrude from the first face.
[0009] The present invention may provide the benefit that the support structure facilitates substantial fixation of the light guide body without affecting the optical performance of the light guide body and without causing degradation over time due to thermal and aging effects. Thus, in the present invention, the light guide body may be fixed by the support system to allow light to be transmitted through the light guide body and escape from the second face and the second end. The support system may be particularly configured so that it minimizes the effect on the optical performance of the light generating system by not covering a substantial portion of the second face. Furthermore, the support system may be configured to be supported with an expanded end that allows light to escape from the second end while providing additional support so that it does not degrade due to thermal and aging effects. Furthermore, the present invention may facilitate assembly because the assembly and fixation of its components may be relatively simple.
[0010] Therefore, the present invention provides a light guide body, wherein the light guide body includes (a) a first surface and a second surface defining a width (W) of the light guide body, (b) a first end and a second end defining a height (H) of the light guide body, wherein the light guide body includes a support structure protruding or recessed relative to the first surface; wherein the first end is configured to be in a light receiving relationship with one or more light generating devices that emit device light; and wherein the light guide body is transmissive to the device light; wherein the light guide body is tapered over a portion of the height (H) in a direction from the first end to the second end; wherein the light guide body includes a first tapered endpoint located at the first surface and a second tapered endpoint located at the second surface, wherein the above-mentioned first tapered endpoint and the above-mentioned second tapered endpoint define a point at which the above-mentioned light guide body stops tapering in the direction from the first end to the second end. Furthermore, the light guide body comprises an expanded end element, wherein the expanded end element comprises (a) a flat surface abutting against the first surface at a first tapered end point, wherein the flat surface is arranged at an angle between 20 and 50 degrees relative to the first surface, and (b) a curved surface abutting against the second surface at a second tapered end point (at least partially) and comprising a curvature; wherein the flat surface and the curved surface are connected to (or: abut against, or: intersect) each other. Therefore, the advantages and / or embodiments applicable to the light guide body device and / or the light generating system according to the initial aspect of the present invention may apply to the other aspect of the present invention after mutatis mutandis modifications in details.
[0011] The above-mentioned angle is defined between a flat surface and a plane defined by the first surface. The above-mentioned flat surface extends forward from the first tapering point in a direction away from the second surface (when at the above-mentioned angle). The above-mentioned curvature may be, for example, at least partially circular or elliptical. The above-mentioned first tapering endpoint and the above-mentioned second tapering endpoint may alternatively be expressed as a first tapering line and a second tapering line, which define the respective lines where the above-mentioned light guide body stops tapering in the direction from the first end to the second end. This expression may be more appropriate when the light guide body is defined as having a length (L). The above-mentioned curved surface may alternatively be defined as an at least partially curved surface, for example, the at least partially curved surface may include at least one curved portion and at least one straight portion, but is therefore still at least partially curved.
[0012] The light guide body according to the invention may be used in a light generating system according to the invention or may be part of a light guide body arrangement according to the invention.
[0013] In one embodiment, (a) the optical waveguide body is tapered at a taper angle (α) selected from the range of 0.5°-5° over a portion of the height (H) in a direction from the first end to the second end, and (b) the optical waveguide body includes a coupling-out element configured to facilitate coupling of device light via the second surface.
[0014] An advantage of the above-described light guide body according to the second aspect of the invention is that the expanded end element reduces glare, which derives from the fact that the optical properties of the light guide body (which is advantageously fixed to the support structure) are improved (i.e. to allow optimal transmission of light through, for example, the support system with minimal impact on it).
[0015] In addition, the above-mentioned expanded end renders a small extension of the light guide body which concentrates light in the vertical direction, spreads the light over a larger surface, and produces significantly more uniform spatial brightness at all relevant viewing angles, which is beneficial for a vertically fixed light guide body (device) as part of a light generating system (as shown in the present application).
[0016] In one embodiment, the flat surface is preferably arranged at an angle between 35 degrees and 50 degrees relative to the first surface. Therefore, the above angle is most preferably at least 35 degrees. The above angle can be, for example, at most 45 degrees. Therefore, due to the elongated curvature of the curved surface (because the flat surface bends backward at a larger angle), the expanded end element can spread light over a larger surface at the second end of the light guide body. This reduces the brightness at the expanded end element and the second end of the light guide body, thereby reducing glare (which would be a problem in the absence of the expanded end element embodied in the above-mentioned another aspect of the present invention). In addition, the expanded end element can redirect light to a vertical downward direction (i.e., downward defined by the direction from the first end to the second end), which helps to illuminate, for example, a table located below the light generating system including the above-mentioned light guide body, and reduce glare for people sitting or walking in the office space around the above-mentioned table.
[0017] In one embodiment, the shortest distance between the first tapered end and the second tapered end may be at most 6 mm, preferably at most 4 mm, such as 3 mm. This allows for a more miniaturized and compact light guide body to reduce glare and still be manufactured by extrusion.
[0018] In one embodiment, the light guide body may include a certain concentration of volume scattering particles. The above-mentioned volume scattering particles are suitable for rendering forward scattering behavior in the light guide body. The diameter of the volume scattering particles may, for example, be larger than the wavelength of the coupled light, that is, the particle diameter is preferably larger than 450nm-650nm, or more preferably larger than 800nm. The above-mentioned volume scattering particles may, for example, be one of silica, polyethylene (PE), silicone, high chlorinated polyethylene (HCPE), glass. The above-mentioned volume scattering particles may include a refractive index between 1.42 and 1.52. The above-mentioned concentration may be a particle volume fraction between 0.1% and 0.4% (relative to the bulk material of the light guide body), most preferably a particle volume fraction of 0.15%, for example when the light guide body includes the material PMMA (as bulk material). The preferred refractive index of the volume scattering particles is preferably close to the refractive index of the substrate. This can provide the desired forward scattering behavior of the light guide body and render light directed downwards (that is, downwards defined by the direction from the first end to the second end) when fixed vertically.
[0019] In one embodiment, the first tapered end point is closer to the first end point (i.e., for example, when measured in the direction of the height (H) of the light guide body) than the second tapered end point. In one embodiment, the first tapered end point and the second tapered end point are located at a distance from the first end point that is equal to at least 90%, preferably at least 95%, of the height (H) of the light guide body. Thus, the expanded end element is located at the end of the light guide body opposite to the side from which light is coupled in.
[0020] As described above, the light generating system may include one or more light generating devices configured to generate device light, a light guide body device including a light guide body, and a support system. In other embodiments, the light guide body device may also include additional components, namely reflector elements. In other embodiments, the light generating system is configured to generate system light, which includes device light, which is first generated from the light generating device, then transmitted through the light guide body and finally escapes from the light guide body, such as escaping via the second face and / or second end of the light guide body in embodiments.
[0021] The light generating system may comprise one or more light generating devices, in particular a plurality of light generating devices. When the light guide has a length (L), the light generating system may comprise (of its length (L)) for example at least one light generating device per 5 cm, such as at least one light generating device per 2 cm. In an embodiment, the light generating system may comprise at least 10 light generating devices, but the number may be much higher, such as at least 100. In an embodiment, the light generating system may comprise a range of 10-1000 light generating devices.
[0022] The light generating device can be particularly configured to generate device light. In particular, the light generating device can include a light source, which is preferably a solid-state light source in a specific embodiment. The term "solid-state light source" or "solid-state material light source" and similar terms can particularly refer to semiconductor light sources, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), diode lasers or superluminescent diodes. The light source can be particularly configured to generate light source light. In an embodiment, the device light can be essentially composed of device light. In other embodiments, the device light can be essentially composed of converted light source light. In other embodiments, the device light can include (unconverted) light source light and converted light source light. The light source light can be converted into luminescent material light using luminescent materials and / or converted into up-converted light using an up-converter (see also below). The term "light generating device" can also refer to a plurality of light generating devices that can provide device light with substantially the same spectral power distribution. In a specific embodiment, the term "light generating device" can also refer to a plurality of light generating devices that can provide device light with different spectral power distributions.
[0023] The term "light source" may in principle relate to any light source known in the art. It may be a conventional (tungsten) bulb, a low-pressure mercury lamp, a high-pressure mercury lamp, a fluorescent lamp, an LED (light emitting diode). In a specific embodiment, the light source comprises a solid-state LED light source (such as an LED or a laser diode (or "diode laser")). The term "light source" may also relate to a plurality of light sources, such as 2-200 (solid-state) LED light sources. Therefore, the term LED may also refer to a plurality of LEDs. In addition, in an embodiment, the term "light source" may also refer to a so-called chip-on-board (COB) light source. The term "COB" refers in particular to an LED chip in the form of a semiconductor chip, which is neither packaged nor connected but is directly mounted on a substrate such as a PCB. Therefore, a plurality of light-emitting semiconductor light sources may be configured on the same substrate. In an embodiment, a COB is a plurality of LED chips that are configured together as a single lighting module.
[0024] A light source may have a light escape surface. For a conventional light source such as a light bulb or a fluorescent lamp, it may be the outer surface of a glass or quartz housing. For example, for an LED, it may be the LED die, or when a resin is applied to the LED die, it may be the outer surface of a resin. In principle, it may also be the terminating end of an optical fiber. The term escape surface particularly relates to that part of the light source, i.e. where the light actually leaves or escapes from the light source. The light source is configured to provide a light beam. The light beam (therefore) escapes from the light exit surface of the light source.
[0025] Likewise, the light generating device may comprise a light escape surface, such as an end window.Furthermore, likewise, the light generating system may comprise a light escape surface, such as an end window.
[0026] The term "light source" may refer to a semiconductor light emitting device, such as a light emitting diode (LED), a resonant cavity light emitting diode (RCLED), a vertical cavity laser diode (VCSEL), an edge emitting laser, etc. The term "light source" may also refer to an organic light emitting diode (OLED), such as a passive matrix (PMOLED) or an active matrix (AMOLED). In a specific embodiment, the light source includes a solid-state light source (such as an LED or a laser diode). In one embodiment, the light source includes an LED (light emitting diode). The term "light source" or "solid-state light source" may also refer to a superluminescent diode (SLED).
[0027] The term LED may also refer to a plurality of LEDs.
[0028] The term "light source" may also relate to a plurality of (substantially identical (or different)) light sources, such as 2-2000 solid-state light sources. In an embodiment, the light source may comprise one or more micro-optical elements (micro-lens arrays) downstream of a single solid-state light source (such as an LED) or downstream of a plurality of solid-state light sources (i.e., shared by a plurality of LEDs). In an embodiment, the light source may comprise an LED with on-chip optics. In an embodiment, the light source comprises a pixelated single LED (with or without optics) (on-chip beam control is provided in an embodiment).
[0029] In an embodiment, the light source may be configured to provide a primary radiation that is used such as, for example, a blue light source, such as a blue LED, or a green light source, such as a green LED, and a red light source, such as a red LED. Such LEDs that may not include a luminescent material ("phosphor") may be denoted as direct color LEDs.
[0030] However, in other embodiments, the light source can be configured to provide primary radiation, and a portion of the primary radiation is converted into secondary radiation. The secondary radiation can be based on the conversion of the luminescent material. Therefore, the secondary radiation can also be expressed as luminescent material radiation. In an embodiment, the luminescent material can be included by the light source, such as an LED having a luminescent material layer or a dome including luminescent material. Such an LED can be expressed as a phosphor conversion LED or a PC LED (phosphor conversion LED). In other embodiments, the luminescent material can be configured at a certain distance ("remote") from the light source, such as an LED having a luminescent material layer that is not in physical contact with the die of the LED. Therefore, in a specific embodiment, the light source can be a light source that emits at least light of a wavelength selected from the range of 380nm-470nm during operation. However, other wavelengths are also possible. This light can be partially used by the luminescent material.
[0031] In an embodiment, the light generating device may include a luminescent material. In an embodiment, the light generating device may include a PCLED. In other embodiments, the light generating device may include a direct LED (i.e., without a phosphor). In an embodiment, the light generating device may include a laser device, such as a laser diode. In an embodiment, the light generating device may include a super luminescent diode. Thus, in a specific embodiment, the light source may be selected from the group of a laser diode and a super luminescent diode. In other embodiments, the light source may include an LED.
[0032] The light source may in particular be configured to generate a source light having an optical axis (O) (beam shape) and a spectral power distribution. In embodiments, the source light may comprise one or more bands, the bandwidth of which is known for lasers.
[0033] The term "light source" may (thus) refer to such a light generating element, such as a solid-state light source, or for example to a package of a light generating element, such as a solid-state power supply, and one or more luminescent materials comprising an element and (other) optics, such as lenses, collimators. A light converting element ("converter element" or "converter") may comprise a luminescent material comprising an element. For example, a solid-state light source such as a blue LED is a light source. A combination of a solid-state light source (as light generating element) and a light converting element (such as a blue LED and a light converter element) optically coupled to a solid-state light source may also be a light source (but may also be denoted as a light generating device). Thus, a white LED is a light source (but may also be denoted as a (white) light generating device, for example).
[0034] The term "light source" herein may also refer to light sources including solid state light sources, such as LEDs or laser diodes or super luminescent diodes.
[0035] (Thus) in embodiments, the term "light source" may (also) refer to a light source based on light conversion, such as a light source in combination with a luminescence conversion material. Thus, the term "light source" may also refer to a combination of an LED and a luminescent material configured to convert at least a portion of the LED radiation, or a combination of a (diode) laser and a luminescent material configured to convert at least a portion of the (diode) laser radiation.
[0036] In an embodiment, the term "light source" may also refer to a combination of a light source (such as an LED) and a filter, which may change the spectral power distribution of the light generated by the light source. In particular, the term "light generating device" may be used to describe a light source and other (optical elements), such as filters and / or beam shaping elements, etc.
[0037] In an embodiment, the expression "different light sources" or "multiple different light sources" and similar expressions may refer to multiple solid-state light sources selected from at least two different bins. Similarly, in an embodiment, the expression "same light source" or "multiple same light sources" and similar expressions may refer to multiple solid-state light sources selected from the same bin.
[0038] In particular, the light generating device comprises one or more of a light emitting diode (LED), a diode laser and a super luminescent diode. Thus, in an embodiment, one or more light generating devices comprises a solid state light source. Furthermore, in particular, the light generating device is configured to generate visible light.
[0039] Instead of the term "light guide" or "light guide body" the term "waveguide" may also be used.
[0040] In an embodiment, the light guide body device may include multiple components made of different materials constituting the light guide body and the support system. In a specific embodiment, the light guide body may be a single piece made of a material that transmits the device light. In a specific embodiment, this may preferably be a solid transparent material, i.e. in particular glass, a mineral, a polymer material or a substitute for such a material.
[0041] Therefore, the light guide body may include a light-transmitting material, and more specifically, may be substantially composed of a light-transmitting material. The light-transmitting material may include one or more materials selected from the group consisting of transmissive organic materials, such as selected from the group consisting of: PE (polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), PEN (polyethylene naphthalate), PC (polycarbonate), polyurethane (PU), polymethacrylate (PMA), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) (organic glass or organic glass), polyformimide (PMI), polymethacrylimide (PMMI), styrene-acrylonitrile resin (SAN), cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), silicone resin, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (in one embodiment, including (PETG) (ethylene glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate)), PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) and COC (cyclic olefin copolymer). In particular, the light-transmitting material may include an aromatic polyester or a copolymer thereof, such as one or more of the following: polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (P(M)MA), polyglycolide or polyglycolic acid (PGA), polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polyethylene adipate (PEA), polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN). In particular, the light-transmitting material may include polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Therefore, the light-transmitting material is particularly a polymer light-transmitting material. However, in another embodiment, the light-transmitting material may include an inorganic material. In particular, the inorganic light-transmitting material may be selected from the group consisting of glass, (fused) quartz, a transmissive ceramic material and silicone. A hybrid material comprising both an inorganic part and an organic part may also be applied. In particular, the light-transmitting material comprises one or more of PMMA, transparent PC or glass, more particularly PMMA or PC.
[0042] In an embodiment, the surface of the light guide body may be smooth. In a specific embodiment, the light outcoupling element (or light outcoupling structure) may be configured to facilitate the outcoupling of the device light via the second surface of the light guide body and / or the second end of the light guide body. The outcoupling element may be composed of a light-transmitting material of the light guide body, and / or may be configured at the first surface and / or the second surface. In particular, the light outcoupling element may be composed of a light-transmitting material of the light guide body, and / or may be configured at the second surface.
[0043] Thus, the light guide body or waveguide may comprise a light outcoupling element. This may comprise one or more of an element embedded by a light transmissive material and an element at a face of the waveguide (such as at one or more of the first face and the second face, see also below).
[0044] The optical out-coupling element may include particles embedded in a light-transmitting material of the waveguide. Such particles may be (volume) scattering particles (e.g., including one or more of Al2O3, BaSO4, and TiO2). The optical out-coupling element may include elements at one or more faces of the waveguide, such as dents, scratches, grooves, material points, light scattering structures (optically in contact with one of the faces), etc. For example, optical out-coupling elements are described in WO9922268, WO2012059866, WO2018041470, and WO03027569, which are incorporated herein by reference. The optical out-coupling element may be configured as a regular pattern of optical out-coupling elements. The optical out-coupling element may be particularly configured to couple the device light out of the waveguide so that the intensity of the device light can escape from the waveguide to be relatively evenly distributed on the waveguide.
[0045] In an embodiment, the light guide body may have a substantially rectangular planar shape, similar to a plate (except for the support structure). In an embodiment, the light guide body may have a tapered shape tapering from the first end to the second end, wherein the first face and the second face are tapered. The faces may be substantially planar (except for the support structure). Thus, the light guide body may substantially have the shape of a (tapered) plate having a reduced width over at least a portion of the length or width.
[0046] In a specific embodiment, the light guide body may comprise a circular shape. For example, the first face and / or the second face may be curved. In an embodiment, the radius of curvature may be substantially greater than the height of the light guide body. Furthermore, in an embodiment, the second end may be circular (see also below).
[0047] The light guide body may include a first face and a second face defining a width (W) selected from the range of 0.1 mm - 20 mm.
[0048] In particular, in a specific embodiment, the first face may face the reflector element. In such an embodiment, the second face may be configured to be further away from the reflector element than the first face. In particular, the second face may be configured to allow outcoupling of device light.
[0049] In a further embodiment, the light guide body mainly comprises a first end and a second end of the light guide body, the first end and the second end defining a height (H) of the light guide body, which height may be particularly selected from the range of 10 mm-1000 mm. In particular, the first end is configured to be closest to one or more light generating devices and have a light receiving relationship therewith, so as to allow device light to enter the light guide body via the first end and be transmitted through the light guide body.
[0050] In a specific embodiment, the first end may include a first end face. The light generating device may be configured to illuminate the first end face with device light. In a specific embodiment, the device light may have a beam angle defined by a half-width at half maximum in a plane parallel to the width (W) and height (H) of the light guide body, the beam angle being selected from the range of 10°-120°, such as from the range of 25°-100°. This can provide good coupling into the light guide body and total internal reflection in the light guide body. Therefore, the "first end face" may also be expressed as a light coupling face. Basically, all device light entering the light guide body can enter via the first end face.
[0051] The second end can be configured to be farthest from the light generating device and in a specific embodiment can have an expanded end element to provide additional support to the light guide body. The expanded end element can include a first tapered portion that is tapered in a direction from the second end to the first end and a second tapered portion that is tapered in a direction from the first end to the second end. The first tapered portion can be configured between the first range and the second tapered portion. Therefore, the expanded end can promote the escape of device light from the second end. The expanded end can further help to fix the light guide body without degradation due to heat or aging effects.
[0052] Thus, in an embodiment, the second end may include a cross-sectional shape similar to a droplet.
[0053] In a specific embodiment, the light guide body may be tapered over at least a portion of the height (H) of the light guide body in a direction from the first end to the second end within a first range, the first range being defined by a first distance d1 from the first end and a second distance d2 from the first end. The first distance and the second distance may be defined as 0.05≤|(d1-d2) / H|<1 relative to the height (H) of the light guide body, more preferably, for example, the first distance and the second distance may be defined as 2≤|(d1-d2) / H|<1 relative to the height (H) of the light guide body.
[0054] In a specific embodiment, the taper angle may be selected from the range of 0.5°-5°. Due to this taper, the width (W) of the light guide body may vary over the height (H) of the light guide body. This may affect the propagation of the device light throughout the light guide body, which in a specific embodiment may need to be considered in the design of the final light generating system.
[0055] In an embodiment, the light guide body may be tapered over substantially its entire height, in particular over at least about 80% of its height. Note, however, that light guide bodies which are not tapered are also included herein. The tapering may facilitate light outcoupling, just as light outcoupling elements do.
[0056] Thus, in an embodiment, the light guide body may be tapered to facilitate outcoupling of device light at a particular angle, which may be selected for a particular lighting device. The tapering may further help to secure the light guide body in place.
[0057] In further embodiments, the light guide body may have a length (L) selected from the range of 10 mm - 3000 mm. However, other lengths are possible; the length may depend on the desired application. In embodiments, the light guide body may be defined by its length (L), height (H) and width (W), where L>H and H>W. In further embodiments. The light guide body dimensions may be defined as H≥2*W and L≥2*H.
[0058] The light guide body may include a support structure. The support structure may protrude relative to the first face, or may be recessed relative to the first face. In specific embodiments, both types are available. However, in general, the support structure may protrude relative to the first face, or may be recessed relative to the first face. The support structure may allow the light guide body to be fixed in one or more directions together with the support system.
[0059] In an embodiment, the light guide body and the related support structure can be provided by removing some parts from the light-transmitting material used to provide the light guide body (for example, by cutting, such as laser cutting, water cutting or milling, or by stamping, such as using a specially manufactured tool or a universal cutting machine, or by spark erosion, etc.). The light guide body (including the support structure) can also be provided via extrusion, extrusion molding, 3D printing, etc. A combination of two or more methods can also be applied.
[0060] In an embodiment, the support structure may be located at a distance d5 from the first face of the light guide body along the height (H), wherein 0≤(d5 / H)≤0.3 applies. In particular, 0<(d5 / H)≤0.05 may be preferred to minimize the impact on the light distribution of the device light in the light guide body.
[0061] In a specific embodiment, the support structure has a support structure length (L1) relative to the length (L) of the light guide body, wherein 0.95*L≤L1≤L applies. In other embodiments, (at least) L1≥0.5*L may apply.
[0062] In a specific embodiment, the support structure and the first support element can be configured to fix the optical waveguide body relative to the support system in a direction parallel to the height (H) to allow light transmitted from the first end to be coupled out through the second face and the second end. In an embodiment, such a configuration can be achieved by recessing or protruding the support structure relative to the first face. In an embodiment where the support structure is recessed relative to the first face, the support structure and the first support element of the device support can be configured as a tongue and groove configuration. Therefore, such an embodiment can facilitate the secure fixation of the optical waveguide body, which can be easily assembled, handled and adjusted.
[0063] In further embodiments, the support structure may protrude relative to the first face, wherein the arrangement of the first support element, the device support portion and the support structure may be configured as a tongue and groove configuration. Thus, such embodiments may facilitate a relatively efficient way of providing the support structure in the light guide body, which may reduce production costs.
[0064] The support system may include various different components made of different materials, including, in specific embodiments, housings, frames, springs, screws, support elements, etc. These components themselves may include multiple different components of different materials. In embodiments, the housing may include a solid material that supports and protects the light guide body, such as metal, hard plastic or wood material or a combination thereof. In specific embodiments, the housing may also include decorative elements. In other embodiments, the frame or screw may include a solid material to provide force on the light guide body as part of its fixation and support, such as metal or hard plastic material or a combination thereof. In other embodiments, the spring may include a solid but flexible material to provide force on the light guide body as part of its fixation and support, such as metal or plastic material or a combination thereof. The support element may include a solid but flexible material to support the light guide body in a flexible manner, such as silicone, rubber, soft plastic material or a combination thereof. In embodiments, the support system may include a device support portion and a light guide body support portion. The device support portion is configured to support one or more light generating devices, and in specific embodiments, may be part of the housing or separate from the housing.
[0065] In an embodiment, the optical waveguide body support portion includes one or more support elements, up to n2, and the support elements can be configured at n2 device support positions relative to the optical waveguide body, where n2≥3. One such device support position can be configured at a third distance d3 from the first end, at a distance 0<(d3 / H)≤0.3 relative to the height (H) of the optical waveguide body. Another such device support position can be configured to be farthest from the first end, located at a fourth distance d4 from the first end, at a distance 0.7≤(d4 / H)<1.0 relative to the height (H) of the optical waveguide body. Another device support position farthest from the first end can be configured to be in physical contact with the optical waveguide body device. This arrangement of support elements can provide uniform and flexible support to the optical waveguide body.
[0066] Thus, the support elements support the light guide body and allow it to be inserted and fixed in the light guide body device to provide a support position at which the light guide body can make one or more physical contacts to ensure the flexibility of the light guide body device. Another benefit of the support elements can be that the contact with the light guide body is more defined and more resistant to bending than a flat or monolithic body as a support element. In addition, they provide a displacement design to minimize the gap between the light guide body and the housing. In addition, they allow to absorb the thermal expansion of the light guide body while ensuring a constant distance from the light generating device to the light guide body.
[0067] In a further embodiment, the support element may be in physical contact with the light guide body, but not in (substantially) optical contact with the light guide body, which may be a risk when the support element consists of a soft material like silicone, rubber, soft plastic, etc. Thus, this avoids undesired light outcoupling or undesired light absorption.
[0068] In a further embodiment, the further device support position furthest from the first end is arranged at the first tapered portion of the expanded end element. In a further embodiment, the light guide body contacts the support element at the further device support position, while the other support element still allows a small gap with the reflector element or the first face of the light guide body. Thus, in such an embodiment, the support element can provide additional support for the freely extending expanded end element to allow the device light to escape through the second end of the light guide body without degradation, such as due to thermal or aging effects or other effects.
[0069] In an embodiment, the first support element is configured to be in physical contact with the support structure at a device support position at a distance d from the first end (at 0≤(d / H)<1 relative to the height (H) of the light guide body). In an embodiment, the position of the first support element will be designed to be able to interlock with the support structure, in an embodiment, the position of the support structure is defined as 0≤(d5 / H)<0.3 or in particular 0≤(d5 / H)<0.05. Therefore, the first support element and the support structure are configured to fix the light guide body relative to the support system in a direction parallel to the height (H) to allow device light to be transmitted from the first end to escape through the second face and the second end.
[0070] In an embodiment, the support structure is not in physical contact with the reflector element. Thus, in an embodiment, substantially the entire first face may be provided with the reflector (element), except for the support structure.
[0071] The height of the support structure may be equal to or less than 50% of the height (H) of the light guide body, such as a maximum of 25%, such as 15% or less in an embodiment, such as selected from the range of 2%-15% of the height (H) of the light guide body.
[0072] Thus, in embodiments, configuration of the first support element to the support structure may be desirable to facilitate secure fixation of the light guide body within the light guide body arrangement when not contacting the reflector element.
[0073] In further embodiments, the light guide body device may further comprise further parts. In specific embodiments, this may in particular comprise a reflector element made of a reflective material, such as a metallic material or a Teflon-like material, or an oxide coating, such as a MgO, TiO2 or BaSO4 coating, or a layered combination of a metal and a dielectric material, such as Al, Ag or SiO2.
[0074] The reflector element can be configured to redirect at least a portion of the device light escaping from the lightguide body via the first face back into the lightguide body, where it is transmitted through the lightguide body and allowed to be coupled out via the second face or second end. To facilitate this, in an embodiment, the reflector element is positioned to face and follow the contour of the first face of the lightguide body. In a specific embodiment, the reflector element can be in physical contact with the first face of the lightguide body. Therefore, in a specific embodiment, the reflector element can have a shape similar to the shape of the first face. For example, the shape of the reflector element can complement at least a portion of the first face, including at least a portion of the second tapered portion (see also below).
[0075] Thus, the reflector element can allow the light generating system to redirect device light that would otherwise escape into the housing through the first face, and instead add it to device light that escapes the light guide body through the second face and the second end. This can promote more efficient generation of system light, and thus can reduce energy costs or increase light output.
[0076] In a further embodiment, the support system may comprise a second arrangement configured to apply a force to the light guide body in the direction of the light guide body support portion. In the second arrangement, the first support element and the support structure are configured to apply a force to the light guide body in the direction of the device support portion, wherein the support system is configured to fix the light guide body relative to the support system in at least one direction parallel to the height (H).
[0077] In particular embodiments, the support system may be configured to fix the light guide body relative to the support system in more than one and at most three directions, in which case these directions will be orthogonal. In further such embodiments, the first support element may comprise a chamfered shape.
[0078] Thus, by providing one or more directional forces, the light guide body can be more securely fixed within the light guide body device. This can facilitate minimizing the gaps of individual light guide bodies. This can additionally ensure thermal contact of the printed circuit board by adding a small continuous force from the light guide towards the light generating device, which can improve the cooling of the printed circuit board. In addition, such an embodiment can facilitate the management of thermal expansion of the light guide body. In addition, these features are located outside the visible area to optimize the uniform look and feel of the light guide body. The chamfered shape facilitates assembly, handling and adjustment of the light guide body within the light guide body device.
[0079] In embodiments, a portion of one or more of the support structure and the support system may include a chamfered shape.
[0080] In other embodiments, the second device may include a frame element and / or a force applying element.
[0081] The bezel element may be configured to be in physical contact with a portion of the second face and to be in physical contact with or encompassed by the device supporting portion.
[0082] A force applying element (such as a screw, a spring, etc.) may be configured to apply a force to the light guide body in the direction of the light guide body supporting portion.
[0083] In addition, the frame element can be used as a component covering a portion of the light guide body device. This can help hide the bright spot caused by light leakage between the light generating device and the light guide body, and cover the portion of the light guide body closest to the first end, where the device light beam generated by the light generating device has not yet been mixed.
[0084] In an embodiment, at least a portion of the border element pointing to the second side may be reflective for device light.
[0085] In a specific embodiment, the second device includes both a border element and a force - applying element. In such an embodiment, the force - applying element (such as a screw, a spring, etc.) may be configured to apply a force to the light - guide body in the direction of the light - guide body support portion via the border element, but other embodiments are possible.
[0086] In a further embodiment, the contact surface between the border element and the light - guide body may be minimized to prevent optical losses. In such an embodiment, the contact surface may not have sharp edges that will contact the light - guide. Preferably, a radius (R) defined as 5 mm < R < 25 mm is applicable.
[0087] Thus, in these embodiments, the (border element and) force - applying element can be used to firmly fix the light - guide body in the light - guide body device. This can contribute to minimizing the gap of a single light - guide body. This can additionally ensure thermal contact of the printed circuit board by adding a small continuous force from the light - guide towards the light - generating device, which can improve the cooling of the printed circuit board. In addition, such embodiments can contribute to the management of the thermal expansion of the light - guide body. Moreover, these features can be substantially outside the visible area to optimize the uniform appearance and feel of the light - guide body.
[0088] The length of the border element may be substantially the same as the length of the light - guide body, such as 0.9*L - 1.05*L, more particularly 0.9*L - L.
[0089] The force - applying element can locally provide a force to the light - guide body. For example, in an embodiment, the force - applying element may have a physical contact with the light - guide body of less than about 2% of the surface area of the second side (regardless of whether the force is applied via the border element). Thus, in an embodiment, the optional border element can also (therefore) have a physical contact with the light - guide body of less than about 2% of the surface area of the second side (regardless of whether the force - applying element is used).
[0090] In a further embodiment, the light - generating system may include n1 light - generating devices having a pitch (P). In an embodiment, the pitch may be selected, for example, from the range of 0.5 mm - 50 mm, such as 1 mm - 20 mm. However, other values are possible.
[0091] In a specific embodiment, the border element may have a border height defined as 0.5 ≤ P / H1 ≤ 1.25 relative to the pitch (P) of the light - generating device. In particular, the border height may be defined as 0.75 ≤ P / H1 ≤ 1. Such a height of the border element seems useful because the border function can be available while the light - shielding can be minimized.
[0092] In an embodiment, the light generating device may be functionally coupled to the light generating device support and extend from the light generating support to have a device height (H2) relative to the light generating device support. The light generating system may include a distance element, which is configured between the light generating device support and the light guide body, and is configured to have a distance element height (H3) relative to the light generating device support, wherein H3>H2. In an embodiment, 1.05*H2≤H3≤5*H2, such as 1.1*H2≤H3≤2.5*H2. The light generating device support may be included by the device support, or may be configured between the device support portion and the light guide body. In further embodiments, the distance element may be configured to have an average of 1 distance element per 8cm-12cm along the length (L) of the light guide body. In particular, the distance element may be configured to have an average of 1 distance element per 10cm along the length (L) of the light guide body. The number of distance elements may be less than the number of light generating devices, although in an embodiment, the specific number of distance elements may be at least three.
[0093] Hence, in such an embodiment the distance element may ensure that the light guide body may be fixed within the light guide body arrangement without risk of damaging the light generating device while facilitating the light generating device approaching the first end or first end face to illuminate the light guide body.
[0094] In an embodiment, the light generating system may be configured to generate system light comprising device light escaping from the light guide body via the second face and the second end. In particular, in an embodiment, the system light may comprise white light, more particularly white light.
[0095] The term "white light" and similar terms herein are known to a person skilled in the art. It particularly relates to light having a correlated color temperature (CCT) between about 1800K and 20000K, such as between 2000 and 20000K, in particular between 2700K-20000K, for general lighting, in particular in the range of about 2000K-7000K, such as in the range of about 2700K to 6500K. [0096] In a specific embodiment, the correlated color temperature (CCT) may be selected from the range of 6000K-12000K, such as from the range of 7000K-12000K, such as at least 8000 K. Furthermore, in an embodiment, the correlated color temperature (CCTV) may be selected from the range of 1000K-12000K, such as from the range of 1800K-8000K, in combination with a CRI of at least 80.
[0097] In other embodiments, the system light may include visible light, such as violet light, blue light, green light, yellow light, orange light, red light, pink light, cyan light, amber light, or light having one or more wavelengths within a wavelength range. The terms "blue light" or "blue emission" particularly relate to light having a wavelength within the range of about 440nm-495nm (including some violet and cyan). The terms "green light" or "green emission" particularly relate to light having a wavelength within the range of about 495nm-570nm. The terms "yellow light" or "yellow emission" particularly relate to light having a wavelength within the range of about 570nm-590nm. The terms "orange light" or "orange emission" particularly relate to light having a wavelength within the range of about 590nm-620nm. The term "red light" or "red emission" particularly relates to light with a wavelength in the range of about 620nm-780nm. The term "pink light" or "pink emission" refers to light having a blue and red component. The term "cyan" may refer to one or more wavelengths selected from the range of about 490nm-520nm. The term "amber" may refer to one or more wavelengths selected from the range of about 585nm-605nm, such as about 590nm-600nm. The expression "light having one or more wavelengths in the wavelength range" and similar expressions may particularly indicate that the indicated light (or radiation) has a spectral power distribution that has at least an intensity at the one or more wavelengths in the indicated wavelength range. For example, a solid-state light source emitting blue will have a spectral power distribution with an intensity at one or more wavelengths in the wavelength range of 440nm-495nm. Therefore, such embodiments may use the light generating system in a wide range of lighting devices, or use the light generating system as a method to facilitate the assembly of such embodiments.
[0098] Since the light generating system may include multiple light generating devices, in embodiments, the spectral power distribution of the system light may also be controlled. Therefore, in a specific embodiment, two or more of the multiple light generating devices may be configured to generate device light with different spectral power distributions, and in a more specific embodiment, with different color points.
[0099] In a specific embodiment, the color or color point of the first type of light and the second type of light may be different when the corresponding color points of the first type of light and the second type of light differ by at least 0.01 for u' and / or by at least 0.01 for v', even more particularly by at least 0.02 for u' and / or by at least 0.02 for v'. In a more specific embodiment, the corresponding color points of the first type of light and the second type of light may differ by at least 0.03 for u' and / or by at least 0.03 for v'. Here, u' and v' are the color coordinates of the light in the CIE 1976 UCS (Uniform Chromaticity Scale) diagram.
[0100] In particular embodiments, two or more of the plurality of light generating devices may be configured to generate device lights having different colors.
[0101] Thus, in particular embodiments, the light generating system may further comprise or be functionally coupled to a control system. The control system may be configured to control spectral characteristics of the system light.
[0102] The light generating system may be part of or may be applied to office lighting systems, home application systems, store lighting systems, household lighting systems, accent lighting systems, spotlight systems, theater lighting systems, fiber optic application systems, projection systems, self-luminous display systems, pixelated display systems, segmented display systems, warning sign systems, medical lighting application systems, signage systems, decorative lighting systems, portable systems, automotive applications, (outdoor) road lighting systems, urban lighting systems, greenhouse lighting systems, horticultural lighting, digital projection or LCD backlighting. For example, the light generating system (or lamp) may be part of or may be applied to an optical communication system or a disinfection system.
[0103] In one aspect, the present invention also provides a method for assembling a light generating system as described herein. In an embodiment, the method may include assembling (i) one or more light generating devices configured to generate device light, (ii) a light guide body device including a light guide body, and (iii) a support system into the light generating system. Thus, by this assembly method, the light guide body can be fixed relative to the support system in a direction parallel to the height (H) of the light guide body.
[0104] The term "control" and similar terms particularly refer to at least determining the behavior of an element or supervising its operation. Therefore, herein, "control" and similar terms may refer to applying behavior (determining the behavior or supervising the operation of an element) to an element, such as, for example, measuring, displaying, actuating, opening, moving, changing temperature, etc. In addition, the term "control" and similar terms may also include monitoring. Therefore, the term "control" and similar terms may include applying behavior to an element, and also include imposing behavior and monitoring elements on an element. The control of an element may be performed by a control system, which may also be represented as a "controller". Therefore, the control system and the element may be functionally coupled at least temporarily or permanently. The element may include a control system. In an embodiment, the control system and the element may not be physically coupled. Control may be performed via wired and / or wireless control. The term "control system" may also refer to a plurality of different control systems, which are particularly functionally coupled, wherein, for example, one control system may be a master control system, and one or more other control systems may be slave control systems. The control system may include or may be functionally coupled to a user interface.
[0105] The control system may also be configured to receive and execute instructions from a remote control. In an embodiment, the control system may be controlled via an App on a device, such as a portable device, such as a smartphone or I-phone, a tablet, etc. Thus, the device is not necessarily coupled to the lighting system, but may be (temporarily) functionally coupled to the lighting system.
[0106] Thus, in an embodiment, the control system may (also) be configured to be controlled by an App on a remote device. In such an embodiment, the control system of the lighting system may be a control from the control system or in slave mode. For example, the lighting system may be identifiable with a code, in particular a unique code of the respective lighting system. The lighting system may also include components for communicating with other systems or devices, such as based on Bluetooth, WIFI, LiFi, ZigBee, BLE or WiMAX or another wireless technology.
[0107] A system, device or apparatus may perform actions in a "mode" or "operating mode" or "operable mode". The term "operable mode" may also be expressed as a "control mode". Similarly, in a method, an action or phase or step may act in a "mode" or "operating mode" or "operable mode". This does not exclude that a system, device or apparatus may also be adapted to provide another control mode or multiple other control modes. Similarly, this may not exclude that one or more other modes may be executed before and / or after executing the mode.
[0108] However, in an embodiment, a control system may be provided, which is adapted to provide at least a control mode. If other modes are available, the selection of such a mode may in particular be performed via a user interface, although other options (such as executing a mode according to a sensor signal or a (time) scheme) are also possible. In an embodiment, an operating mode may also refer to a system, device or apparatus that can only be operated in a single operating mode (i.e. "on", without further adjustability).
[0109] Therefore, in an embodiment, the control system may be controlled according to one or more of an input signal of a user interface, a sensor signal (of a sensor) and a timer. The term "timer" may refer to a clock and / or a predetermined time scheme.
[0110] In yet another aspect, the present invention also provides a lamp or lamp comprising a light generating system as defined herein. The lamp may also include a housing, an optical element, a shutter, etc. The lamp or lamp may also include a housing surrounding the light generating system. The lamp or lamp may include a light window in the housing, or a housing opening, through which the system light can escape from the housing. In yet another aspect, the present invention also provides a projection device comprising a light generating system as defined herein. In particular, a projection device or "projector" or "image projector" may be an optical device that projects an image (or moving image) onto a surface, such as a projection screen. The projection device may include one or more light generating systems, such as those described herein. Therefore, in one aspect, the present invention also provides a light generating device comprising a light generating system as defined herein, the light generating device being selected from a lamp, a lamp, a projection device, a disinfection device, a photochemical reactor, and an optical wireless communication device. The light generating device may include a housing or carrier configured to accommodate or support one or more elements of the light generating system. For example, in an embodiment, a light generating device may include a housing or carrier configured to accommodate or support one or more of a lamp, a lamp fixture, a projector device, a disinfection device, a photochemical reactor, and an optical wireless communication device, the device including one or more light generating systems.
[0111] According to another aspect of the present invention, the present invention provides an improved light guide body. In addition, the present invention provides a light guide body, wherein the light guide body includes (a) a first face and a second face defining a width (W) of the light guide body, (b) a first end and a second end defining a height (H) of the light guide body, wherein the first end is configured to be in a light receiving relationship with one or more light generating devices; and wherein the light guide body is transmissive to device light; wherein the light guide body is tapered over at least a portion of the height (H) in a direction from the first end to the second end within a first range, the first range being defined by a first distance d1 from the first end and a first distance d2 from the first end. The second distance d2 of the portion (261) is defined as 0.05≤|(d1-d2) / H|<1, preferably 0.2≤|(d1-d2) / H|<1; wherein the light guide body includes an expanded end element, wherein the expanded end element includes (a) a first tapered portion and (b) a second tapered portion, the first tapered portion is tapered in a direction from the second end to the first end, and the second tapered portion is tapered in a direction from the first end to the second end; wherein the first tapered portion is configured between the first range and the second tapered portion. Therefore, the advantages and / or embodiments applicable to the light guide body device and / or light generating system according to the initial aspect of the present invention can be applied to another aspect of the present invention after necessary modifications in details.
[0112] An advantage of the above light guide body according to another aspect of the invention is that the expanded end element reduces glare due to the fact that the optical performance of the light guide body is improved (ie allowing optimal transmission of light through eg the support system with minimal impact thereon).
