Examples of waveforms include sine waves, square waves, and triangle waves, although in communication systems, waveforms are more complex in shape due to the modulation used. The modulation used in wireless communication systems can be high order, and generally speaking, the modulation scheme is related to the characteristic waveform of the modulation scheme. [0016] Disclosed herein are methods that enable a fast and intelligently adaptive way of switching waveforms in wireless communications between a user equipment UE and a base station device (e.g., a base station, a distributed unit, or a relay node). Specifically, the UE is able to select a waveform to be used on an uplink UL control channel (e.g., an uplink physical control channel). Waveforms typically have different characteristics, such as a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In particular, the use of waveforms with lower PAPR in coverage-limited scenarios provides technical benefits in terms of reduced system interference. The reduction in interference is even greater if switching to such a waveform is possible without explicit signaling, since the explicit signaling itself causes interference in the system.

[0017] Figure 1 An example system according to at least some embodiments of the present invention is shown. The system is a cellular communication system, such as a fifth generation (5G), also known as a new radio NR or a long term evolution LTE system, as specified by the third generation partnership project 3GPP. Some implementations of the present disclosure may also be accomplished in a non-cellular system, such as a wireless local area network WLAN. The system includes a base station 130, which may be referred to as a gNB or an eNB, for example, depending on the specific technology on which the system is based. The base station 130 may be distributed, i.e., it may include one or more base station devices, for example, the base station 130 may include a centralized unit CU and one or more distributed units DU. The CU provides support for higher layers, such as radio resource control RRC, while the DU handles lower layers, such as radio link control RLC and media access control MAC. In some embodiments, the base station 130 is an integral device and is not distributed in nature.

[0018] The base station 130 is coupled to a core network CN 140. The CN 140 includes nodes such as a mobility management entity MME, a subscriber data repository, and a gateway, which serve the communication system as a whole and enable the communication system to communicate with other networks, which are described in detail in the following sections for clarity. Figure 1 The exact names of the core network nodes, their specific functions, and the way in which CN tasks are distributed among the nodes depend on Figure 1 The system is based on the technology in each specific implementation. CN 140 can be connected to another network via a gateway.

[0019] Base station 130 controls a cell, the edge of which is at Figure 1Schematically shown as edge 101 in the cell. UEs 110 and 120 are arranged in the cell, wherein UE 110 is close to base station 130 and UE 120 is close to edge 101. UE 110 communicates with base station 130 via radio link 131, and UE 120 communicates with base station 130 via radio link 132. Radio links 131 and 132 may each include an uplink UL and a downlink DL for communicating to base station 130 and UEs, respectively.

[0020] In general, a UE may be able to move within the coverage area of a cell and across the edge 101 into the coverage area of other cells, even though some UEs may be fixed in nature and their location does not change. Examples of such fixed UEs are communication modules of utility meters and closed-circuit cameras, while mobile UEs include smartphones, tablets, laptops, mobile phones, and connected car connection modules. In this way, the same UE may be near the cell edge 101 and away from the edge depending on its movement. Even for a fixed UE, its distance to the cell edge 101 may change if the network is reconfigured and the edge 101 moves.

[0021] The physical uplink control channel PUCCH in NR is an example of an uplink control channel, which is used to carry uplink control information UCI, such as scheduling requests SR, which can also be used for beam failure recovery BFR requests or link failure recovery requests, hybrid automatic repeat request confirmation HARQ-ACK and channel state information CSI. NR PUCCH formats 2, 3 and 4 can carry HARQ-ACK, SR and / or CSI, while formats 0 and 1 can only carry SR and / or up to two HARQ-ACK bits. In general, the uplink control channel can have a short format and a long format. Each format has a format configuration in the PUCCH configuration. NRPUCCH formats 0 and 2 are short PUCCH formats that can occupy up to two OFDM symbols, while PUCCH formats 1, 3 and 4 are long PUCCH formats that occupy 4 to 14 OFDM symbols. In general, the uplink control channel can have two formats, a short format and a long format. The long format can provide better coverage because the received energy can be collected over a longer period of time. Generally, when a cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) waveform is used in a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH), the short format is more suitable for use, while when better coverage is required and a discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) waveform is used in PUSCH, the long format is more suitable for use. DFT-s-OFDM has a lower PAPR than CP-OFDM and is therefore generally more suitable for coverage-limited scenarios, such as UEs 110, 120 near a cell edge 101.

[0022] The PUCCH configuration of NR is defined in 3GPP technical standard TS 38.331, which contains different parameters related to PUCCH. In this configuration, the UE can be configured with multiple PUCCH resources. The determination of PUCCH resources can depend on at least one of the following: the PUCCH resource indicator PRI in the downlink control information DCI, the UCI payload size, and other parameters used by the system.

[0023] Depending on the system, CSI reporting can support different types, including periodic, semi-persistent, and aperiodic CSI reporting. A single PUCCH resource or a list of PUCCH resources can be configured for HARQ-ACK reporting corresponding to semi-persistent scheduling SPS physical downlink shared channel PDSCH reception. When two PUCCHs carrying different types of UCI overlap in time, the UE can be configured to multiplex these UCIs into the PUCCH. This involves PUCCH carrying HARQ-ACK, CSI, and SR. In NR, CSI reports can include, for example, channel quality indicators, precoding matrix indicators, CSI reference signal resource indicators, layer indicators, and rank indicators. A received signal power indicator can also be included in the CSI report.

[0024] Dynamic switching between waveforms (such as between CP-OFDM and DFT-s-OFDM) would be beneficial because the DFT-s-OFDM waveform is beneficial for UL coverage-limited and power-limited scenarios due to its lower PAPR compared to the CP-OFDM waveform. In general, DFT-s-OFDM is better than CP-OFDM for UEs experiencing coverage limitations. The UL waveform can be configured to the UE via RRC signaling, which can incur a high signaling load to accomplish the waveform change. Therefore, it would be beneficial to switch between waveforms using a more optimized (e.g., implicit) signaling solution.

[0025] When dynamically switching from a first waveform to a second waveform (e.g., for periodic CSI reporting on PUCCH), the UE may be configured via RRC with a CSI reporting configuration having a single PUCCH resource for a given bandwidth. The PUCCH resource may be PUCCH format 2, 3, or 4. However, if the PUCCH resource has format 2 used with CP-OFDM, and the UE switches from CP-OFDM to DFT-s-OFDM, the resource is not suitable for use because format 2 is a short format and may span several radio bearers in frequency, which has limited coverage. Similar issues may be observed for HARQ-ACK reporting for SPS (PDSCH) reception, as the UE may be configured with a single PUCCH resource with format 0. However, if the PUCCH waveform switches from CP-OFDM to DFT-s-OFDM, the resource may not be suitable because format 0 is a short format, and the long format may be better suited for the communication scenario. Related issues arise in PUCCH determination for UCI multiplexing. Specifically, the UE may determine a PUCCH resource for carrying the multiplexed UCI from a set of PUCCH resources, some of which may be applicable to CP-OFDM and the rest to DFT-s-OFDM. Therefore, considering the dynamic waveform switching, the UE may select a PUCCH resource that is not suitable for the waveform in use.

[0026] In order to enable the PUCCH to dynamically adapt to the applicable waveform or select the correct waveform, in addition to at least one first PUCCH resource or at least one UCI configuration, the UE may also be configured or indicated at least one second PUCCH resource or at least one second UCI configuration for uplink control information, UCI, transmission. Taking into account the dynamic waveform switching, depending on the applicable waveform, the UE may consider the at least one second PUCCH resource or at least one second UCI configuration as valid or invalid when performing PUCCH transmission. In other words, the UE may be configured to select the first resource or configuration, or the second resource or configuration based on considerations such as which waveform to use. The resources or configuration corresponding to the waveform used are selected for use, while the resources or configuration corresponding to the waveform not used are not used and / or considered invalid.

[0027] For UCI multiplexing or reporting on PUCCH (where the multiplexed UCI is of the same type, such as SPS or HARQ-ACK, or different types of UCI), the UE may send or multiplex two or more UCIs in the same PUCCH. To select PUCCH resources that carry these UCIs, the UE may be configured to not use PUCCH resources that do not correspond to the currently applicable waveform. Then, in the case of dynamic switching from a first waveform to a second waveform, when the UE switches to the second waveform (e.g., based on a base station indication), the UE may skip PUCCH resources that do not correspond to the second waveform, and may only consider PUCCH resources corresponding to the second waveform as valid.

[0028] For CSI report configuration, in the PUCCH CSI resource list, for the bandwidth part, in addition to the first PUCCH resource, a second PUCCH resource can also be configured. Each of the first PUCCH resource and the second PUCCH resource corresponds to a different waveform. As an alternative to the first PUCCH resource and the second resource, a first resource list and a second resource list corresponding to different first waveforms and second waveforms can be defined. Then, in the case of switching from the first waveform to the second waveform, the UE can use the PUCCH resource or PUCCH resource list corresponding to the second waveform instead of the PUCCH resource or resource list corresponding to the first waveform. Alternatively or additionally, two or more CSI report configurations can be configured (for example, with a "periodic" reporting configuration type), each CSI report configuration corresponding to a different waveform, and the UE can only regard the CSI report configuration corresponding to the waveform in use as active or applicable.

[0029] For HARQ-ACK reporting for SPS PDSCH reception, in addition to the first PUCCH resource list for HARQ-ACK, a second PUCCH resource list for HARQ-ACK may be configured. The first PUCCH resource list may correspond to the first waveform, and the second PUCCH resource list may correspond to the second waveform. The PUCCH resource list here may contain at least one PUCCH HARQ-ACK resource for DL SPS. Such a list may be, for example, n1PUCCH-AN or sps-PUCCH-AN-List in NR. In the case of dynamic switching from the first waveform to the second waveform, the UE may use the PUCCH resource list corresponding to the second waveform instead of the PUCCH resource list corresponding to the first waveform.

[0030] Similarly, for SR configuration, first PUCCH resources or configurations and second PUCCH resources or configurations corresponding to the first waveform and the second waveform, respectively, may be configured, and the UE may use the first PUCCH resources or configurations, or the second PUCCH resources or configurations, depending on which waveform is being used, so that PUCCH resources or configurations corresponding to unused waveforms are not used.

[0031] The correspondence used above between PUCCH resources, resource lists or configurations and waveforms may be explicitly configured or indicated to the UE, for example, via RRC signaling. As an alternative to signaling, the correspondence may be indicated in the corresponding industry standard. For example, PUCCH resources using format 2 or format 0 may be considered to correspond to CP-OFDM, while PUCCH resources using format 3 / 4 or format 1 may be considered to correspond to DTF-s-OFDM. More generally, resources with longer formats may be considered to correspond to waveforms with lower PAPR, and resources with shorter formats may be considered to correspond to waveforms with higher PAPR.

[0032] The waveform used for PUCCH may follow dynamic signaling of the waveform signaled to the UE, e.g. using DCI, or may be selected by the UE, e.g. based on path loss parameters. The dynamic signaling may be based on physical layer DCI or MAC signaling, and may be the same or different than the waveform signaling used for PUSCH. This may include implicit and / or explicit signaling methods for dynamic switching of PUCCH waveforms.

[0033] As an alternative, the following rule may be defined: If the waveform switching for PUSCH indicates the use of DFT-s-OFDM for PUSCH, the UE may then consider DFT-s-OFDM as also being an applicable waveform for all PUCCH transmissions. The selection of the DFT-s-OFDM waveform may be accompanied by, or alternatively, the selection of a long PUCCH format. Otherwise, the UE may consider CP-OFDM as an applicable waveform for PUCCH. The selection of the CP-OFDM waveform may be accompanied by, or alternatively, the selection of a short PUCCH format, and as a variant thereof, when DFT-s-OFDM is used on PUSCH and the base station also indicates PUCCH resources with a long format via DL DCI, the UE may use PUCCH resources / formats corresponding to DFT-s-OFDM for all PUCCH transmissions. In NR, the long formats are format 1, format 3, and format 4. Likewise, stated conversely, when CP-OFDM is indicated for PUSCH (optionally together with the use of short PUCCH format), the UE may select PUCCH resources / format to use for all PUCCH transmissions.

[0034] As another alternative, if the PUCCH resource indicator in the DCI indicates a PUCCH resource with a long PUCCH format (such as format 1, 3 or 4 in NR), the UE may consider DFT-s-OFDM and / or the long format to be applicable to all PUCCH (and / or PUSCH) transmissions immediately or after a certain applicability period. Otherwise, if the PUCCH resource indicator in the DCI indicates a PUCCH resource with a short PUCCH format (such as format 0 or 2 in NR), the UE considers CP-OFDM and / or the short format to be applicable to all PUCCH (and / or PUSCH) transmissions.

[0035] As a third alternative, a reserved bit in a MAC control element, CE, can be used for dynamic waveform switching of PUCCH and / or PUSCH. For example, a reserved bit R in a secondary cell activation / deactivation MAC CE in NR can be used to indicate the waveform to the UE. For another example, one or more reserved bits on a PUCCH activation / deactivation MAC CE can be used to indicate the waveform to be used by the UE.

[0036] As a fourth alternative, existing fields in the DCI may be used for dynamic waveform switching of PUCCH and / or PUSCH. For example, a specific time domain resource allocation, TDRA, entry may be associated with a specific waveform via RRC signaling. Then, when the entry is indicated in the DCI, the UE may know which waveform to apply. As another example, a specific modulation and coding scheme, MCS, entry may be associated with a specific waveform via RRC. When the entry is indicated in the DCI, the UE may know which waveform to apply. As another example, the "Demodulation Reference Signal, DM-RS, Sequence Initialization" field in the DCI may be interpreted according to pre-configured rules and used for dynamic waveform switching indication.

[0037] In general, if the dynamic waveform switching for PUCCH and PUSCH is separate, and the UE determines or is indicated to use DFT-s-OFDM and / or long format for PUCCH, the UE may consider DFT-s-OFDM as also applicable to PUSCH, regardless of whether the most recently indicated / applicable waveform for PUSCH is CP-OFDM. Similarly, if the dynamic waveform switching for PUCCH and PUSCH is separate, and the UE determines or is indicated to use CP-OFDM for PUCCH, the UE may consider CP-OFDM and / or short format as also applicable to PUCCH, regardless of whether the most recently indicated / applicable waveform for PUCCH is CP-OFDM.

[0038] Although the above is generally discussed around selecting a waveform, in some embodiments, the selection of a waveform may be accompanied by, or alternatively to, the selection of a long or short PUCCH format. In detail, the selection of a lower PAPR waveform (such as DFT-S-OFDM) may be accompanied by, or alternatively to, the selection of a long PUCCH format, because the long format also provides coverage benefits. Similarly, the selection of a higher PAPR waveform (such as CP-OFDM) may be accompanied by, or alternatively to, the selection of a short PUCCH format.

[0039] In general, the resources used on an uplink channel such as PUCCH can be defined according to the suitability of the communication system in use. Some resources may be applicable to the first waveform, while other resources may be applicable to the second waveform. For example, resources may be defined according to a set of parameters. For example, a parameter set may include at least one of the following: a starting physical resource block, PRB, or PRB offset, intra-slot frequency hopping parameters, a second hop PRB, a first symbol index, a number of symbols, an initial cyclic shift index, an interleaving parameter, a number of PRBs, a time domain orthogonal cover code, an OCC, an OCC length, an OCC index, a PUCCH repetition factor, an inter-slot frequency hopping parameter, an additional demodulation reference signal, a DMRS, a maximum code rate, a maximum payload size, a number of slots, a π / 2 binary phase shift keying parameter, spatial relationship information (and its related parameters), a resource block group parameter, and a simultaneous hybrid repeat request confirmation-channel state information parameter.

[0040] Figure 2 1 shows an example process according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. Figure 1 UE 110 and base station 130 in FIG. Time progresses from top to bottom.

[0041] In stage 210, base station 130 and UE 110 (e.g., directed by the base station) agree on a first uplink resource to be used with a first waveform and a second uplink resource to be used with a second waveform different from the first waveform. The waveforms have different PAPRs, with the second waveform having a lower PAPR. For example, the first uplink resource and the second uplink resource may be used for UCI multiplexing.

[0042] In stage 220, base station 130 directs UE 110 to dynamically switch from using the first waveform to using the second waveform, e.g., to communicate at least one information element. In response, in stage 230, UE 110 treats uplink resources defined in stage 210 for use with the first waveform as invalid or skips these resources, and selects uplink resources to be used with the second waveform as active resources to be used, even for second information elements other than the first information element. For example, the UE may determine that UCI multiplexing is required, e.g., multiplexing of SPS HARQ-ACK and CSI, and may select uplink resources for PUCCH used in the multiplexing to send SPS HARQ-ACK and CSI.

[0043] In stage 240, UE 110 transmits uplink control channel information, such as PUCCH with SPS HARQ-ACK and CSI, for example, using the uplink resources defined in stage 210 as corresponding to the second waveform.

[0055] Figure 4 2 shows signaling according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. Figure 1 The UE110 in the right side shows Figure 1 The base station 130 in FIG. Time advances from top to bottom.

[0056] In stage 410, base station 130 and UE 110 (e.g., directed by the base station) agree on a first uplink resource to be used with a first waveform and a second uplink resource to be used with a second waveform that is different from the first waveform. The waveforms have different PAPRs, the second waveform having a lower PAPR. For example, the first uplink resource and the second uplink resource may be used for UCI multiplexing or for all PUCCH usage.

[0057] Stage 420 corresponds to the UE 110 transmitting data using an uplink shared channel (such as PUSCH in NR). Stage 430 includes selecting a first uplink resource or a second uplink resource for use in an uplink control channel based on which waveform is used on the uplink shared channel when the UE needs to transmit on the uplink control channel. Specifically, if the first waveform is used on the uplink shared channel, the UE selects the first uplink resource and uses the first waveform on the uplink control channel, and if the second waveform is used on the uplink shared channel, the UE selects the second resource and uses the second waveform on the uplink control channel. In stage 440, the UE 110 uses the selected uplink resource and the selected waveform when transmitting on the uplink control channel. If the UE is in a coverage-limited situation, the base station will select a lower PAPR waveform for the uplink shared channel, where the UE can reuse the base station's selection to obtain an implicit solution for selecting the correct resource (or configuration) and waveform to use.

[0058] exist Figure 4 In FIG. 4 , a separate solution based on stage 410 is also shown, as well as a solution of stages 450 to 470. In this solution, UE 110 wants to send CSI and / or SR on the uplink control channel, and UE 110 does not necessarily send on the uplink shared channel.

[0059] In stage 450, UE 110 sends HARQ-ACK on the uplink control channel or on a different uplink control channel. In stage 460, the UE selects resources for sending CSI and / or SR on the uplink control channel based on how the HARQ-ACK is sent. How the UE sends the HARQ-ACK is controlled by base station 130, which knows whether UE 110 is in a coverage limited situation. UE 110 selects a second, lower PAPR waveform and / or long format for the uplink control channel (CSI and / or SR) in response to the HARQ-ACK being sent using the second waveform and / or long control channel format.

[0060] In stage 470 , UE 110 sends CSI and / or SR on an uplink control channel (such as PUCCH) using the waveform and / or format selected based on the HARQ-ACK transmission parameters in stage 460 .

[0061] Figure 5 is a flow chart of a method according to at least some embodiments of the present invention. The various stages of the method shown in the figure may be executed in UE 110, for example, or in a control device installed therein for controlling its functions.

[0062] Stage 510 includes storing in the apparatus a first resource or configuration using a first waveform and a second resource or configuration using a second waveform for use on an uplink control channel, the second waveform having a lower peak-to-average power ratio than the first waveform, and storing a long format and a short format for the uplink control channel. Stage 520 includes selecting one of the first resource or configuration and the second resource or configuration and / or one of the long format and the short format for use on at least a portion of the uplink control channel based on signaling received in the apparatus from a base station device.

[0063] The selection includes: 1) selecting a second resource (or configuration) and / or a long format for an uplink control channel as a response to signaling indicating the use of a second waveform for an uplink shared channel; or 2) selecting a second resource (or configuration) and / or a long format for an uplink control channel for sending channel state information, a semi-persistent scheduling hybrid automatic repeat request confirmation, or a scheduling request as a response to signaling indicating the use of a second waveform or a long format for at least one information element other than the corresponding channel state information, semi-persistent scheduling hybrid automatic repeat request confirmation, or scheduling request. For example, the selection may include using the second resource (or configuration) and / or the long format for the first of the channel state information, the semi-persistent scheduling hybrid automatic repeat request confirmation, and the scheduling request as a response to signaling indicating the use of the second waveform or the long format for the second of the channel state information, the semi-persistent scheduling hybrid automatic repeat request confirmation, and the scheduling request. Thus, the selection may include using the second resource and / or the long configuration for the first resource despite not receiving an explicit instruction to use the second resource (or configuration) and / or the long configuration for the first resource. Specifically, the information element may include a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) resource indicator corresponding to a hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement (HARQ-ACK) with a corresponding physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) carried in downlink control information (DCI).
