Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 370,045, filed on August 1, 2022, entitled “PACKAGING CONFIGURED TO HOLD A DEVICE FOR ADMINISTERING MEDICINE OR A DRUG,” which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Technical Field
[0003] The presently disclosed technology generally relates to secondary packaging configured to hold therein a device designed to administer contents, such as, but not limited to, a medication. More specifically, in one embodiment, the presently disclosed technology relates to secondary packaging configured to prevent unintentional actuation of an inhaler and / or to protect an inhaler during storage, transport, and / or non-use of the inhaler. Background Art
[0004] Devices for administering or releasing contents, such as one or more drugs, are often stored or shipped in secondary packaging. The secondary packaging is designed to protect the device in a compact and economical manner. The secondary packaging can be discarded or reused after the device is removed therefrom for use, for example, by an end user or a healthcare professional.
[0005] Inadvertent actuation and damage to the aforementioned devices within the secondary packaging is not uncommon. Inadvertent actuation wastes valuable contents (e.g., medication) and can create a mess inside and outside the secondary packaging. Damage to the device can prevent use of the device, which in turn wastes valuable contents and wastes raw materials used to form the device. Summary of the invention
[0006] There is a need to prevent inadvertent actuation of devices stored within secondary packaging. There is also a need for simplified and / or different configurations of secondary packaging that can securely hold and protect one or more of the aforementioned devices in a more compact or economical manner. For example, it would be beneficial to create a secondary packaging that is not necessarily child-resistant but requires or at least benefits from two hands to open. It would also be beneficial to create a secondary packaging that is sleek and convenient to store and transport.
[0007] The above needs and other needs are addressed by the presently disclosed technology.
[0008] In one aspect, the presently disclosed technology relates to a secondary package configured to hold one or more devices for administering a drug. The secondary package may include a body having a base and a sidewall extending upward from the base. The secondary package may also include a cap removably attached to the body. The cap and the body may be combined to form a cavity for holding the device when the cap is attached to the body.
[0009] In another aspect, the presently disclosed technology relates to a combination of a nasal administration inhaler and a secondary packaging configured to hold one or more of the nasal administration inhalers.
[0010] In yet another aspect, the presently disclosed technology relates to a secondary packaging configured to hold one or more devices for administering a drug. The secondary packaging may include a body and a cap pivotally attached to the body. The cap and the body may be combined to form a cavity for holding the device when the cap is attached to the body. The body may include a clip located on an inner surface of the body. The clip may be configured to surround at least a portion of the device. The clip may be configured to prevent unintentional removal of the device or unintentional movement of the device relative to the body.
[0011] In still another aspect, the currently disclosed technology relates to a secondary packaging configured to hold a device for administering a drug, the secondary packaging comprising a body having at least one clip attached to an inner surface of the body. The at least one clip can be configured to surround at least a portion of the device. The clip can be configured to prevent unintentional removal of the device or unintentional movement of the device relative to the body. The secondary packaging can also include a cap pivotally attached to the body. The cap and the body can be combined to form a cavity for holding the device when the cap is in a closed position relative to the body.
[0012] In yet another aspect, the presently disclosed technology relates to a method of attaching a device for administering a drug to a secondary package, the method may include pivoting a cap of the secondary package relative to a body of the secondary package about a hinge of the secondary package to move the secondary package from a closed configuration to an open configuration to expose a cavity. The method may include placing the device for administering the drug into at least one clip, the at least one clip being attached to an inner surface of the body of the secondary package. The at least one clip may be configured to surround at least a portion of the device. The clip may be configured to prevent unintentional removal of the device or unintentional movement of the device relative to the body.
[0013] Optionally, the device snap fits into the clip. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0036] Although systems, devices and methods are described herein by means of examples and embodiments, those skilled in the art recognize that the presently disclosed technology is not limited to the described embodiments or drawings. On the contrary, the presently disclosed technology covers all modifications, equivalent forms and alternatives that fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims. The features of any one embodiment disclosed herein may be omitted or incorporated into another embodiment.
[0037] Any headings used herein are for organizational purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the specification or claims. As used herein, the word "may" is used in a permissive sense (i.e., meaning with the possibility) rather than a mandatory sense (i.e., meaning must). Unless specifically set forth herein, the terms "a", "an", and "the" are not limited to one element, but should be interpreted as meaning "at least one". The terms include the above-mentioned words, their derivatives, and words of similar meaning.
[0038] As used herein, "and / or" means referring to either or both of the items separated by this term. For example, the phrase "A and / or B" will mean A alone, B alone, or both A and B.
[0039] As used herein, "generally" means in a "general manner" with respect to the modified term as would be understood by one of ordinary skill in the art.
[0040] Directional phrases used herein, such as, but not limited to, top, bottom, left, right, upper, lower, front, rear and derivatives thereof, refer to the orientation of elements shown in the drawings and do not limit the claims unless explicitly recited therein.
[0041] In an optional embodiment, the secondary packaging described herein is not moisture resistant.
[0042] In another optional embodiment, the secondary packaging described herein is moisture-proof and resealable. In general, as used herein, the term "moisture-proof" is defined as a moisture ingress (after three days) of less than 1500 μg of water, less than 500 μg of water in another embodiment, less than 300 μg of water in another embodiment, and less than 150 μg of water in yet another embodiment as determined by the following test method: (a) placing one gram plus or minus 0.25 grams of molecular sieve in a container and recording the weight; (b) completely closing the container; (c) placing the closed container in an environmental chamber at 80% relative humidity and 72°F; (d) after one day, weighing the container containing the molecular sieve; (e) after four days, weighing the container containing the molecular sieve; and (f) subtracting the first day sample from the fourth day sample to calculate the moisture ingress of the container in micrograms of water. The preferred rate of moisture ingress into a moisture-tight sealed container according to one aspect of the disclosed concept is in the range of about 200-300 μg / day water or less. Thus, a "moisture-tight" seal is a sealing joint that helps make a container "moisture-tight" according to the above definition alone or in combination with another sealing joint.
[0043] As used herein, the term "resealable" means that the lid of the container can be opened or reopened and closed or reclosed many times (eg, more than 10 times) and still maintain its moisture barrier properties.
[0044] As used herein, the term "secondary" in the phrase "secondary packaging" refers to packaging that does not directly contain or hold contents for consumption by a user, but instead holds packaging that directly contains or holds contents for consumption by a user.
[0045] Referring now in detail to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout, Figure 1-8 A combination of a secondary package, generally designated 10, and at least one device, generally designated 12, is shown. Each device 12 may be configured to store, release, and / or administer a content therein, such as, but not limited to, a drug. The secondary package 10 may be configured to retain or contain one or more of the devices 12 therein and prevent unintentional actuation of the devices 12, such as by axial compression.
[0046] Optionally, the device 12 is an inhaler, such as, but not limited to, a nasal inhaler, a metered dose inhaler (MDI), a dry powder inhaler (DPI), and a soft mist inhaler (SMI). The inhaler may be a single dose (UDS) or a double dose (BDS) inhaler. The device 12 may optionally include a spring 13 (see Figure 4a), the spring is used to promote the movement (e.g., expansion and / or contraction) of device 12 from an activated position in which at least some of the contents of device 12 are released or administered to an inactivated position in which the contents of device 12 are prevented from leaving. However, device 12 is not limited to being an inhaler, as device 12 can be any structure configured to store, release and / or administer the contents held therein, such as an eye dropper or a pepper spray.
[0047] Optionally, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) stored in the device 12 and / or delivered by the device can be one or more of the following: Naloxone, Ketamine, Midazolam, Fentanyl, Lorazepam, Glucagon, Nalmefene, Epinephrine, Apomorphine, Cetrorelix, Loxapine, Eletriptan, Ketorolac and / or Olanzapine.
[0048] Device 12 may optionally be used to store and / or deliver insulin and / or epinephrine and / or another medication to treat or reduce symptoms of, for example, diabetes or asthma.
[0049] In an optional embodiment, the device 12 can be pre-filled and provide a drug in a dosage form. Specifically, the device 12 can be a dispersion device or a spray device that delivers the drug in a dispersed form (such as in a metered aerosol form). The device 12 can be pre-filled with a drug in a finished dosage form. Embodiments include devices such as those cited in 68 Federal Gazette (Fed. Reg.) 36,675, 36,676 and 36,680 (June 18, 2003). Exemplary embodiments include intranasal aerosols and spray devices.
[0050] Secondary packaging 10 is particularly suitable for use with a device 12 for administering a powdered drug, such as an intranasal delivery powder. The drug can be any drug that can be delivered by a dispensing device. The drug can be associated with one or more other ingredients, such as those cited in 21 CFR § 314.3.
[0051] In an optional embodiment, the drug stored in the device 12 is a powdered drug, such as glucagon. The device 12 can be configured to deliver glucagon or another drug in the form of a simple disposable nasal powder. This provides a significant advantage over complex systems that involve mixing liquids and powders together and then injecting the solution. It has been determined that patients using the device 12 have blood sugar levels close to normal within 30 minutes of taking powdered glucagon.
[0052] In an optional embodiment, the nasal powder can be administered with a disposable one-step dispensing device. The tip of the device 12 can be inserted into one nostril, and a dose can be delivered by simply depressing an actuator connected to a piston, which discharges the powder into the nostril. Patients do not need to cooperate because absorption occurs through the nasal mucosa. The glucagon formulation is provided in the device 12, which results in highly effective protection of both the activity of the glucagon and its delivery device.
[0053] Additional details regarding device 12 or similar devices that may be used in accordance with optional aspects of the presently disclosed technology are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 10,894,133, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0054] The secondary package 10 may include a body 14 having a base 18 and a side wall 20 extending upward from the base 18. The end of the side wall 20 relative to the base 18 may include an edge 22 (see Figure 6 and 7 ), the edge surrounds and / or defines an opening 24 leading to the cavity 16. Optionally, the opening 24 is oval or circular.
[0055] The secondary package 10 may also include a cover or cap 26 that is removably attached to the body 14 and / or separable (e.g., spaced apart) from the body. The cap 26 may include a top wall 30 and a side wall 31 extending downward from the top wall. The cap 26 may include an annular skirt 28 extending downward (directly or indirectly) from the side wall 31 and / or top portion of the cap 26. In the current optional embodiment, the top wall 30 of the cap 26 is at least partially or completely planar. Alternatively, the top wall 30 may be partially or completely curved.
[0056] In one embodiment, the cap 26, body 14 and / or other features of the secondary package 10 are optionally made primarily or exclusively of one or more injection moldable thermoplastic materials, including, for example, polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene. It may be beneficial to have the entire secondary package 10 and its components made of a single material to make recycling easier.
[0057] In the present optional embodiment, the cap 26 can be positioned relative to the body 14 in a first or closed position (e.g., Figure 1-5 ) and the second or open position (e.g. Figure 6-8 ), and / or can be separated from the body, in the first or closed position, the cap 26 and the body 14 can optionally form a seal, such as but not limited to a moisture-proof seal, and in the second or open position, the opening 24 of the body 14 is exposed. Optionally, at least a portion of the skirt 28 or the entirety of the skirt 28 is configured to fit within at least a portion of the sidewall 20 of the body 14 when the cap 26 is attached to the body 14.
[0058] In the closed position, the cap 26 and the body 14 can be combined to form the cavity 16 (see Figure 4 ), the cavity is used to hold, protect and / or surround the device 12 when the cap 26 is attached to the body 14. The cavity 16 can be configured to accommodate the entire device 12.
[0059] In an optional embodiment, the cap 26 can be completely separated from the main body 14 in the open position, so that the package 10 is formed by two different or separate pieces. In an alternative optional embodiment, a hinge can connect the cap 26 to the main body 14. The cap 26 can be optionally resealed relative to the main body 14.
[0060] In the present optional embodiment, the body 14 and the cap 26 can be combined to form a cylinder or bottle, so that the side wall 20 of the body 14 and the side wall 31 of the cap 26 can be at least partially curved or rounded. However, the disclosed concept can include or be other shapes, such as rectangular or cubic, and thus have more than one single continuous (e.g., round) side wall.
[0061] For some uses, a child-resistant cap or package may be desirable, but may not be necessary for all applications. Therefore, child-resistant and non-child-resistant caps or packages are contemplated. Where a child-resistant feature is provided, the child-resistant feature optionally requires application of force in more than one single direction to the cap 26 to remove the cap 26 from the body 14.
[0062] Optionally, when the device 12 is located within the cavity 16 (e.g., when the cap 26 is attached to the body 14), the body 14, the cap 26, and / or at least a portion of the secondary packaging 10 are configured to prevent the device 12 from moving and / or include means for preventing the device from moving, which would otherwise release or administer the drug. For example, the inner surface of the body 14 may include a flange 15 (see Figure 4a ), the flange being configured to contact a portion of the device 12 when the cap 26 is attached to the body 14 and prevent the device 12 from moving from the inactive position to the inactive position.
[0063] like Figure 7 As shown, the means for preventing the device 12 from moving, which would otherwise release or administer the drug, may include or the package 10 may include at least one or two or more spaced apart wings or ribs 34 extending inwardly from the inner surface of the body 14 into the cavity 16. In an optional embodiment, each wing 34 may extend inwardly and / or upwardly from the inner surface of the base 18 of the body 14. The top surface of one or more of the wings 34 may form a flange 15.
[0064] Alternatively or additionally, such as Figure 8 As shown, the means for preventing the device 12 from moving, which would otherwise release or administer the drug, may include or the package 10 may include at least one or two or more spaced-apart wings or ribs 36 extending inwardly from the inner surface of the cap 26 into the cavity 16. In an optional embodiment, each wing 36 may extend inwardly and / or upwardly from the inner surface of the top wall of the cap 26.
[0065] Optionally, when the cap 26 is in the closed position and the device 12 is located in the cavity 16, the wings 34, 36 can be positioned on either side of the upper and lower ends of the device 12 to help maintain the upper end of the device 12 in a specific or desired lateral and longitudinal position. Each wing 34, 36 can be configured to prevent the device 12 from being reconfigured from the unactivated position to the activated position. Each wing 34, 36 can have a length and / or width sufficient to contact (or at least approach to contact) a portion of the device 12 when the device 12 is positioned in the cavity 16 and the cap 26 is in the closed position, so as to block or prevent the device 12 from moving (even slightly) from the unactivated position to the activated position (i.e., to prevent the device from being axially compressed).
[0066] refer to Figure 6 and 8 The skirt 28 of the cap 26 may optionally include at least one or two or more spaced apart protrusions 40 extending at least slightly radially outward from the skirt. Each protrusion 40 may be located closer to the end of the skirt 28 near the side wall 31 of the cap 26 than to the free end of the skirt 28. Optionally, two spaced apart protrusions 40 may be arranged linearly across the width of the skirt 28.
[0067] In an optional embodiment, the sidewall 20 of the main body 14 may include at least one or two or more spaced-apart openings or grooves 42, which extend in or through the sidewalls. Each opening 42 may be configured to accommodate at least a portion of a projection 40 when the cap 26 is in a closed position relative to the main body 14. The engagement or disengagement of each projection 40 and opening 42 combination may provide the user with a tactile indication of packaging 10 being closed (e.g., by feeling or hearing a snap or click) or opening, respectively. Of course, the positioning of each projection 40 and opening / groove 42 may be reversed so that each projection 40 is located on the main body 14.
[0068] like Figure 7 As shown, the thickness of the sidewall 20 of the body 14 near the edge 26 and each opening or recess 42 of the body 14 can have a reduced dimension (e.g., in the radial direction), generally indicated as RD, so that the reduced thickness of the sidewall 20 at each of these locations allows one of the protrusions 40 to be more easily entered into and removed from the corresponding opening or recess 42. Each area of reduced thickness can have a lateral width that is the same or similar to the lateral width of the opening or recess 42 to which it corresponds.
[0069] like Figure 6-8 As shown, the skirt 28 may optionally include at least one or more spaced apart cutouts 44. Each cutout 44 may be wider at the free end of the skirt 28 and narrow or taper as the cutout moves toward the opposite end of the skirt 28. Each cutout 44 provides flexibility to the skirt 28, which can help facilitate movement of the cap 26 from the open position to the closed position and prevent or reduce the likelihood of undesirable warping or deflection of the assembly.
[0070] In an optional embodiment, Figure 2 As shown in , the cap 26 may include one or at least two opposing cap thumb tabs 46, and the body 14 may include one or at least two opposing body thumb tabs 48. In an optional embodiment in which the package 10 has an oval configuration when viewed from below or above, the cap thumb tabs 46 may be aligned along the major axis, and the body thumb tabs 48 may be aligned along the minor axis, which is perpendicular to the major axis.
[0071] Optionally, each thumb tab 46, 48 is fixed or stationary relative to the corresponding side wall 20, 31. Alternatively, each thumb tab 46, 48 is movable relative to the corresponding side wall 20, 31. In the latter example, simultaneously engaging at least two of the opposing cap thumb tabs 46 or body thumb tabs 48 disengages the protrusion 40 from the corresponding opening or recess 42.
[0072] One or both of the thumb tabs 46, 48 or a set of thumb tabs 46, 48 can be configured to be engaged and / or depressed by a user to facilitate separation of the cap 26 from the body 14 and / or attachment of the cap 26 to the body 14. Specifically, laterally inward movement of one or both of the thumb tabs 46, 48 or a set of thumb tabs 46, 48 (such as by a user's fingers) can help facilitate engagement or disengagement of the protrusion 40 and the opening 42.
[0073] refer to Figure 7 , the ring 50 can optionally extend inwardly or upwardly from the inner surface of the base 18 of the body 14. The ring 50 can be configured to receive at least a portion of the device 12 when the device 12 is placed in the body 14. The ring 50 can help prevent unintentional or undesirable movement of the device 12 relative to the body 14, and / or reduce the possibility of damage to the device 12 inside the secondary package 10.
[0074] Optionally, the secondary package 10, such as the cap 26 and / or the body 14 thereof, may include an active polymer component fixed to a portion thereof or integral therewith. For example, the active polymer component may be part of the molding process of the body 14 and / or the cap 26, such that the end user cannot visually identify the active polymer component from the body 14 and / or the cap 26.
[0075] In another optional embodiment, the secondary packaging 10 is free of active polymer components.
[0076] Optionally, the body 14 and / or the cap 26 may be formed by a two or three injection molding process, as described in detail below.
[0077] The active polymer component can include a base polymer with one or more active agents, and can be referred to as a polymer or entrained polymer with an active agent in this article. The active agent in the active polymer component can include an absorbent material, a release material and / or an activation material. Optionally, the active polymer component is a polymer of a three-phase entrained desiccant. The active polymer component can be provided in different shapes, volumes and / or configurations. In an exemplary embodiment, the active polymer component is in the form of a solid plug or a roughly planar member extending into the interior space of the cap 26.
[0078] In one embodiment, the active polymer component is a polymer of a single component entrained desiccant made of a single piece of material. Entrained polymer (whether entrained with a desiccant or another active agent) can include a base polymer (for structure), a desiccant (or other active agents) and optionally a channel forming agent. These types of active entrained polymers and their preparation and use methods are disclosed in, for example, U.S. Patent Nos. 5,911,937, 6,214,255, 6,130,263, 6,080,350, 6,174,952, 6,124,006 and 6,221,446 and U.S. Patent Publication No. 2016 / 0039955 of the applicant, each of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Optionally, the entrained polymer can be in the form of a loose or optionally hot-melt (e.g., by heat sealing to the surface) film.
[0079] Alternatively, the desiccant may include loose desiccant beads or a pouch containing the desiccant beads. While the exemplary embodiments herein reflect the active polymer component being attached to, for example, the cap 26 or the body 14, it is contemplated that the active agent may be located at other locations and / or positions, such as on the sidewall of the body.
[0080] In the embodiment where each active component contains a desiccant, moisture absorption is desired. However, in the case where moisture absorption is not desired, the active component may include an alternative activating agent. For example, in another embodiment, the active component contains a material selected from the group consisting of: activated carbon, carbon black, ketjenblack and diamond powder. In another embodiment, the activating agent comprising one or more active component layers contains materials such as absorbing microspheres, BaTiO3, SrTiO3, SiO2, Al2O3, ZnO, TiO2, MnO, CuO, Sb2O3, silicon dioxide, calcium oxide and ion exchange resins. In another embodiment, the absorbent containing the active component layer contains two or more types of absorbents. Select a suitable absorbent to achieve absorption of the desired vapor or gas for the desired end use (e.g., absorbing moisture, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or other undesirable gases or vapors).
[0081] The active component (whether a desiccant, oxygen scavenger, release material or component, or the like, or a combination thereof) is capable of acting on, interacting with, or reacting with a selected material (e.g., moisture or oxygen). Examples of such actions or interactions may include absorption, adsorption (usually sorption), or release of a selected material. For example, each active component may be extruded or molded. Optionally, the active component may be formed in a desired shape or pattern (e.g., on a backing) by a linear melt bonding thermal bonding process.
[0082] Active component can include the base material containing "active ingredient". Active ingredient (i) can be miscible with base material (e.g., polymer) and will not melt when mixed and heated with base polymer and channel former, i.e., its melting point is higher than the melting point of base polymer or channel former, and / or (ii) acts on selected material, interacts with selected material or reacts. The term "active ingredient" can include but is not limited to materials that absorb, adsorb or release selected materials. According to the active ingredient of the current disclosed technology, it can be in particle form, such as mineral (e.g., in the case of desiccant, molecular sieve or silica gel), but the current disclosed technology should not be considered as being limited to particulate active agent. For example, in some embodiments, oxygen scavenging preparations can be made of resins that serve as active agent or components of active agent.
[0083] As used herein, the term "base material" is a component (preferably a polymer) that entrains an active material other than an active agent and provides the structure of the entrained material.
[0084] As used herein, the term "base polymer" is a polymer that optionally makes the gas permeability of the selected material substantially lower than, lower than, or substantially equivalent to the gas permeability of the channeling agent. For example, in embodiments where the selected material is moisture and the active ingredient is a water-absorbing desiccant, this permeability will be a water vapor permeability. The main function of the base polymer is to provide the structure of the entrained polymer. Suitable base polymers can include thermoplastic polymers, for example, polyolefins (such as polypropylene and polyethylene), polyisoprene, polybutadiene, polybutylene, polysiloxane, polycarbonate, polyamide, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene-methacrylate copolymer, poly (vinyl chloride), polystyrene, polyester, polyanhydride, polyacrylonitrile, polysulfone, polyacrylate, acrylic acid, polyurethane and polyacetal or its copolymer or mixture.
[0085] In one embodiment, referring to this comparison of the water vapor permeability of the base polymer and the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent, the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent is at least twice the water vapor permeability of the base polymer. In another embodiment, the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent is at least five times the water vapor permeability of the base polymer. In another embodiment, the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent is at least ten times the water vapor permeability of the base polymer. In still another embodiment, the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent is at least twenty times the water vapor permeability of the base polymer. In still another embodiment, the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent is at least fifty times the water vapor permeability of the base polymer. In still another embodiment, the water vapor permeability of the channeling agent is at least one hundred times the water vapor permeability of the base polymer.
[0086] As used herein, the term "a channeling agent" or "channeling agents" is defined as a material that is immiscible with the base polymer and has an affinity for transporting gaseous materials at a rate faster than the rate at which the base polymer transports the gaseous materials. Optionally, the channeling agent is capable of passing through channels of the entrained polymer formed when formed by mixing the channeling agent with the base polymer. Optionally, such channels are capable of transporting a selected material through the entrained polymer at a rate faster than in the base polymer alone.
[0087] As used herein, the term "channel" or "interconnected channels" is defined as passageways formed by a channeling agent that permeates through a base polymer and can be interconnected with each other.
[0088] As used herein, the term "entrained polymer" is defined as a monolithic material formed by at least one base polymer together with an active agent and optionally also an entrained or integrally distributed channeling agent. Thus, entrained polymers include two-phase polymers and three-phase polymers. "Mineral-loaded polymers" are types of entrained polymers in which the active agent is in the form of a mineral, such as mineral particles (such as molecular sieves or silica gel). The term "entrained material" is used herein to refer to a monolithic material comprising an active agent entrained in a base material, wherein the base material may or may not be a polymer.
[0089] As used herein, the term "monolithic," "monolithic structure," or "monolithic composition" is defined as a composition or material that is not composed of two or more discrete macroscopic layers or parts. Thus, a "monolithic composition" does not include a multilayer composite, although a monolithic composition may constitute a layer of such a composite.
[0090] As used herein, the term "phase" is defined as a part or component that is uniformly distributed throughout a bulk structure or composition so as to provide the structure or composition with its bulk properties.
[0091] As used herein, the term "selected material" is defined as a material that acts through, interacts with, or reacts with an active agent and is capable of being transported through the channels of the entrained polymer. For example, in embodiments where a desiccant is used as the active agent, the selected material may be moisture or a gas that may be absorbed by the desiccant. In embodiments where a release material is used as the active agent, the selected material may be an agent released by the release material, such as moisture, fragrance, or an antimicrobial agent (e.g., chlorine dioxide). In embodiments where an adsorbent material is used as the active ingredient, the selected material may be a certain volatile organic compound and the adsorbent material may be activated carbon.
[0092] As used herein, the term "three-phase" is defined as an overall composition or structure comprising three or more phases. An example of a three-phase composition according to the currently disclosed technology would be an entrained polymer formed by a base polymer, an active agent, and a channeling agent. Optionally, the three-phase composition or structure may include additional phases, such as a colorant.
[0093] The entrained polymer can be a two-phase formulation (i.e., comprising a base polymer and an active ingredient without a channeling agent) or a three-phase formulation (i.e., comprising a base polymer, an active agent, and a channeling agent). Entrained polymers are described, for example, in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,911,937, 6,080,350, 6,124,006, 6,130,263, 6,194,079, 6,214,255, 6,486,231, 7,005,459, and U.S. Patent Publication No. 2016 / 0039955, as cited above.
[0094] The entrained material or polymer includes a base material (e.g., polymer) for providing a structure, optionally a channel former and an active agent. The channel former forms microscopic interconnected channels by the entrained polymer. At least some of the active agents in the active ingredient are contained in these channels so that the channels are communicated between the active ingredient and the outside of the entrained polymer through the microscopic channel openings formed at the outer surface of the entrained polymer. The active ingredient can be any of a variety of absorbent materials, adsorbent materials, or release materials, such as those described in further detail below. Although the channel forming component is preferred, the technology disclosed herein broadly includes entrained materials, such as two-phase polymers, that optionally do not include a channel former.
[0095] In any embodiment, suitable channel forming agents may include polyglycols, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH), polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), glycerol polyamines, polyurethanes, and polycarboxylic acids containing polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid. Alternatively, the channel forming agent may be, for example, a water-insoluble polymer, such as propylene oxide polymerized product-monobutyl ether produced by Clariant, such as Polyglykol B01 / 240. In other embodiments, the channel forming agent may be propylene oxide polymerized product monobutyl ether such as Polyglykol B01 / 20 produced by Clariant, propylene oxide polymerized product such as Polyglykol DO 1 / 240 produced by Clariant, ethylene vinyl acetate, nylon 6, nylon 66, or any combination of the foregoing.
[0096] Suitable active ingredients according to the currently disclosed technology include absorbent materials, such as desiccating compounds. If the active agent is a desiccant, any suitable desiccant can be used for a given application. Generally, physical absorption desiccant is preferred for many applications. These applications may include molecular sieves, silica gel, clay and starch. Alternatively, the desiccant can be a chemical compound that forms crystals containing water or a compound that reacts with water to form a new compound.
[0097] Optionally, in any embodiment, the active agent can be an oxygen scavenger, for example, an oxygen scavenging resin formulation.
[0098] Figure 9-15 Another optional embodiment of the combination of secondary packaging 110 and device 112 of the presently disclosed technology is shown. Figure 9-15 The combination shown has Figure 1-8 and discussed above. Figure 1-8 Examples and Figure 9-15 The structures between the embodiments are similar or identical in Figure 9-15 China-Israel-Belgium Figure 1-8 The reference numerals in the figure are distinguished by reference numerals with a magnitude greater than one hundred (100). For convenience and brevity only, reference to Figure 1-8 Examples and Figure 9-15 Description of certain similarities between the embodiments.
[0099] In contrast to the previous embodiments, the secondary packaging 110 of the presently disclosed embodiments is a one-piece or unitary design. Specifically, the cap 126 is pivotally attached to the body 114, optionally via at least one hinge 151. When the cap 126 is in the closed position, the cap 126 and the body 114 combine to form a cavity 116 for holding and / or surrounding the device 112 (see Fig.14 ). The secondary packaging 110 may optionally have a clamshell configuration.
[0100] One distinguishing feature of the secondary packaging 110 is at least one clip or attachment mechanism 152 located on or affixed to an inner surface of the secondary packaging. The clip 152 can be configured to surround and / or contact at least a portion of the device 112, but not necessarily the entirety of the device 112. Each clip 152 can be configured to prevent or at least reduce the likelihood of unintentional removal of the device 112 from the secondary packaging 110.
[0101] Optionally, the secondary packaging 110 and / or the clip 152 are configured such that the device 112 can be at least slightly moved relative to the clip 152, such as along the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. L (See Fig.14In one optional embodiment, this at least slight movement of the device 112 can help prevent the device 112 from being damaged inside the secondary packaging 110, such as when the secondary packaging 110 is dropped.
[0102] In another optional embodiment, the device 112 is fixed and / or cannot be moved along its longitudinal axis A when the device 112 is located in the clip 152 and / or attached to the clip. L move.
[0103] In the optional embodiment shown, the secondary packaging 110 includes a single clip 152 that is configured to hold, directly grasp, and / or surround at least a portion of a single device 112. However, the clip 152 can be designed to hold more than one device 112 in a larger version of the secondary packaging 110, or the secondary packaging 110 can include two or more spaced-apart clips 152 that are each sized to hold one device 112. The clip 152 can also be configured to prevent unintentional removal of the device 112 or unintentional movement of the device relative to the body 114.
[0104] Optionally, the clip 152 is removably attached or permanently fixed to the inner surface of the body 114, such as but not limited to by adhesive, mechanical fasteners (e.g., pins or screws), or a press-fit or snap-fit engagement. The clip 152 can be disposed along the longitudinal axis A of the secondary packaging 110. L (See Fig.14 ) is positioned or secured to the body 114 at or near the midpoint of the body 114. Optionally, the longitudinal axis A of the secondary package 110 L parallel to the axis defined by hinge 151 (sometimes referred to herein as hinge axis A H ,like Fig.14 shown) extension.
[0105] The clip 152 may optionally include two opposing or spaced apart and arcuate arms 153a, 153b. Each arm 153a, 153b may extend outwardly or away from the inner surface of the body 114 in a non-linear manner. Each arm 153a, 153b may be resilient or may be biased inwardly (e.g., biased to Fig.14 and 15 152) such that the device 112 can snap fit into the clip 152. Optionally, each arm 153a, 153b can be configured to move or bend at least slightly outwardly away from the device 112 to allow the device 112 to be removed from the secondary package 110. Thus, each arm 153a, 153b can act as a spring for maintaining the device 112 in a desired position or orientation.
[0106] Optionally, each arm 153a, 153b may have a uniform thickness from its base to the free end, such as Fig.15In an alternative optional embodiment, each arm 153a, 153b may include a portion of reduced thickness or width. In this embodiment, each arm 153a, 153b may bend at least slightly at the thin area or portion and toward the body 114 when the secondary package 110 experiences a sudden force, such as when the secondary package 110 is dropped.
[0107] refer to Fig.15 In an optional embodiment, each arm 153a, 153b can include at least one first portion 155 and at least one or two spaced-apart second portions 157. Optionally, the first portion 155 can separate the two second portions 157. Each first portion 155 can be axially spaced relative to the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. D The second portion 157 may be concave and each second portion 157 may be concave relative to the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. D This configuration allows the clip 152 to easily receive and / or house the device 112 while securely holding the device 112 when the device 112 is pushed fully downward into the clip 152 .
[0108] Optionally, the entire clip 152 or one or more portions thereof may be formed of metal, while the remainder of the secondary packaging 110 may be formed of a polymer material. Optionally, the clip 152 and the remainder of the secondary packaging 110 may be formed of a polymer material.
[0109] Optionally, as Fig.13 and 14 As shown in FIG. 1 , when the device 112 can be placed in the clip 152, the longitudinal axis A of the device 112 D The longitudinal axis A of the secondary package 110 extends at an angle θ that is not parallel or perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A of the secondary package 110. L or hinge axis A H . Angle θ can optionally be 10-80 degrees, optionally 11-20 degrees, optionally 12-16 degrees, optionally 12.5-15 degrees, optionally 13.3 degrees, optionally 20-70 degrees, optionally 18-22 degrees, optionally 20 degrees, optionally 30-60 degrees, optionally 28-32 degrees, optionally 30 degrees, optionally 40-50 degrees, or optionally 45 degrees. Angle θ reduces the likelihood of device 112 being damaged in the event or when secondary package 110 experiences a sudden force, such as when secondary package 110 is dropped. Specifically, angle θ changes the vector of the drop force, which makes device 112 less likely to be damaged as when the longitudinal axis A of device 112 is dropped. D Slide and / or move so quickly parallel to the direction of fall.
[0110] In another optional embodiment, the longitudinal axis A of the device 112 DParallel to the longitudinal axis A of the secondary packaging 110 L or hinge axis A H extend.
[0111] Another distinguishing feature of an optional embodiment of the secondary package 110 of the current embodiment is that the body 114 is designed and / or configured so that the clip 152 only receives or holds the device 112 when the device 112 is pointed in one direction or one orientation. For example, the secondary package 110 can optionally receive and hold the device 112 when the device 112 is oriented in a first orientation, but not receive or hold the device 112 when the device is oriented in an opposite second orientation.
[0112] In order to dominate or at least facilitate the above functions, such as Figure 13-15 As shown in FIG. 1 , at least two or four or more spaced apart prongs 136 may extend inwardly and / or upwardly from the inner surface of the body 114. Thus, each prong 136 may extend inwardly into the cavity 116 when the secondary package 110 is in the closed configuration. Each prong 136 is disposed along the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. D Spaced apart from the clip 152 .
[0113] Optionally, each prong 136 extends parallel to any other prong 136. The width of each prong 136 can be wider than its thickness and the height can be taller than its width. The base of each prong 136 attached to the inner surface of the body 114 can be larger or wider than the free end of each prong 136. A tapered or concave portion can be located between the base and the free end of each prong 136. The tapered or concave portion of each prong 136 can face the device 112 when the device is positioned in the clamp 152. Therefore, each tapered or concave portion can accommodate or supplement at least a portion of the device 112 when the device 112 is held by the clamp 152.
[0114] In an optional embodiment, two of the four spaced apart prongs 136 are located at the longitudinal axis A of the clip 152. D 112, and two of the four spaced apart prongs 136 are located along the longitudinal axis A of the clip 152. D on the opposite or second side of the .
[0115] Optionally, the prongs 136 on the first side are positioned closer to each other and / or closer to the longitudinal axis A of the device 112 than the prongs 136 on the second side. D In other words, across the longitudinal axis A of the device 112 D The first prongs 136 may be aligned with each other across the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. D The second pair of prongs 136 are closer together.
[0116] This arrangement allows the device 112 to be attached to the clip 152 when the device is pointed in a first direction (e.g., when the nose of the device 112 is positioned between the closer pair of prongs 136), but prevents the device 112 from being attached to the clip 152 when the device is pointed in an opposite, second direction (e.g., when a user attempts to insert the handle end of the device 112 between the closer pair of prongs 136).
[0117] In an optional embodiment, the clip 152 and the prongs 136 can be combined to prevent or at least limit the movement of the device 112 at least perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A of the device 112 when the device 112 is attached to the clip 152 and / or the body 114. D Additionally, when the device 112 is attached to the clip 152 and / or the body 114, a portion of the prong 136 may contact a portion of the device 112 to prevent the device from moving in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. D For example, one or more of the prongs 136 may abut against an outer surface or flange of the device 112 to prevent certain movement of the device 112, such as in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis A of the device 112. D in the direction of.
[0118] refer to Fig. 9 , 11 13-15, in an optional embodiment, the secondary package 110 may include a locking mechanism, a latching mechanism, or a closing mechanism. More specifically, the cap 126 may include a latch 138 that extends at least partially from the cap. The latch 138 may be configured to engage at least a portion of the body 114, such as at least one protrusion or a plurality of spaced protrusions 140 extending from the outer surface of the body 114, to help maintain the secondary package 110 in a closed configuration. Optionally, the plurality of spaced protrusions 140 may extend in parallel at or near a lateral middle portion of the body 114.
[0119] Optionally, the latch 138 can be generally flat or planar with a groove or opening 142 extending therethrough. Each protrusion 140 can optionally be sized, shaped, and or configured to be at least slightly larger than the opening 142 so that the latch 138 can snap fit onto the protrusion 140. In the same or alternative arrangements, one or both ends of each protrusion 140 can include a clasp that can extend through and / or around the opening 142 and engage the front surface of the latch 138 when the secondary package 110 is in the closed configuration.
[0120] The engagement or contact between the latch 138 and the at least one protrusion 140 can maintain the secondary package 110 in the closed position. Optionally, the periphery of the opening 142 can engage the protrusion 140 when the secondary package 110 is in the closed configuration. In at least one optional embodiment, the latch 138 needs to be separated from the at least one protrusion 140 to reconfigure the secondary package 110 from the closed position to the open position.
[0121] Optionally, the method of attaching one or more devices 112 to the secondary packaging 110 may include pivoting the cap 126 relative to the body 114 about the hinge 151 to move the secondary packaging 110 from a closed position to an open position to expose the cavity 116. Next, the device 112 may be placed, inserted, and / or snap-fitted into the clip 152. In an optional embodiment, the device 112 must be oriented in a specific manner to be received by the at least one pair of prongs 136. Otherwise, the device 112 may not be able to contact and engage the clip 152. Optionally, before pivoting the cap 126 relative to the body 114, the latch 138 is separated from the at least one protrusion 140.

For the sake of convenience and brevity, the Figure 9-15 Examples and Figure 16-20 Description of certain similarities between the embodiments.
[0123] Figure 16-20 One distinguishing feature of the optional embodiment of the secondary package 110'' shown in FIG. 1 is the ability to hold and / or protect two devices 112 when the secondary package 110'' is in a closed configuration. To accommodate an additional device 112, the secondary package 110'' may be larger than the secondary package 110''. Figure 9-15 The secondary packaging 110 shown in FIG. 1 is wider and / or longer, but not necessarily taller or thicker. The secondary packaging 110 ′″ may optionally include two spaced-apart clips 152 ′″.
[0124] refer to Fig. 20 The secondary package 110'' may optionally be configured to contain one of the devices 112 in a first direction and a second of the devices 112 in an opposite second direction. The longitudinal axis A of each device 112 Dmay extend at an angle θ that is not parallel or perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A of the secondary package 110″′ L ”'. To allow for such orientation, eight or more prongs 136"' are arranged in a staggered manner.
