Description

[0001] This divisional application is a divisional application of the PCT national phase patent application with a PCT international filing date of April 30, 2020, national application number 202080031894.4, and titled "Determining Transmission Configuration and Precoding Resource Block Groups for Resource Block Groups". Technical Field

[0002] The following relates generally to wireless communications, and more particularly to determining a transmission configuration for a resource block group and precoding the resource block group. Background Art

[0003] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasting, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems (such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems), and fifth generation (5G) systems that may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems. These systems may use various technologies, such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include several base stations or network access nodes, each of which simultaneously supports the communication of multiple communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE).

[0004] In some wireless communication systems, a UE or base station may determine an allocation of a resource structure in a particular frequency or frequency band. In some cases, a resource structure may be referred to as a resource block. A UE or base station may determine a subset of contiguous resource blocks (which may be referred to as a bandwidth portion) to identify where certain information may be transmitted. In some cases, when identifying resource blocks of a bandwidth portion, a device may identify conflicting information, which may result in transmission errors and / or reception errors. Summary of the invention

[0005] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices and apparatuses for supporting determination of transmission configurations and precoding resource block groups for resource block groups. In general, the described technology provides a process for avoiding conditions that may result in transmission errors or reception errors due to conflicts or incorrect resource block characteristics. In some cases, a base station may transmit downlink control information indicating a resource allocation type to avoid potential errors. In other cases, a UE and / or a base station may specify a specific resource block group size to avoid potential errors. In these cases, the UE and / or the base station may calculate the number of resource block groups for a bandwidth portion and allocate the size of the resource block group based on the calculation. In the same or different cases, the UE and / or the base station may compare the bandwidth portion size with the resource block group size to determine whether to specify a different resource block group size to avoid potential errors.

[0006] The described techniques may be similarly used to avoid potential errors based on precoding resource block groups. For example, a base station may transmit downlink control information indicating a resource allocation type to avoid potential errors caused by determining the size of a precoding resource block group. In another example, a UE and / or a base station may specify a specific precoding resource block group size to avoid potential errors. In these situations, the UE and / or the base station may calculate the number of precoding resource block groups for a bandwidth portion and allocate the size of the precoding resource block group based on the calculation. In the same or different situations, the UE and / or the base station may compare the bandwidth portion size with the precoding resource block group size to determine whether to specify a specific bandwidth portion size to avoid potential errors.

[0091] In some wireless communication radio access technologies, one or more devices (e.g., user equipment (UE) and / or base station) may allocate or determine various locations and sizes of resource structures within a frequency bandwidth (such as a carrier bandwidth). For example, a base station may allocate locations of various resource blocks (e.g., physical resource blocks (PRBs), common resource blocks (CRBs), virtual resource blocks (VRBs)) within a carrier bandwidth. In some cases, these resource block locations, sizes, and groupings may be allocated and determined with reference to a carrier bandwidth part (BWP) and a point in the carrier bandwidth (e.g., point A where subcarrier 0 in the carrier bandwidth is centered). A bandwidth part may be a subset of contiguous common resource blocks defined within a carrier bandwidth.

[0092] Various techniques may be used to determine resource block allocations within a carrier bandwidth. In some cases, a type 0 resource allocation (e.g., for a finer granularity of resource allocation) may refer to a bitmap including bits for each resource block group. The UE may receive a type 0 resource allocation (e.g., a bitmap indicated via downlink control information) and may identify which resource block groups are included in the downlink grant based on a resource block group (RBG) configuration (e.g., a configuration or index of the RBG) and the individual 1s indicated by the bitmap. A type 1 resource allocation may refer to a continuous resource allocation indicated by a starting resource block or resource block group and an ending resource block or resource block group. In a type 0 allocation, a specified formula may be used to determine the resource block group size of the first resource block group and the last resource block group in a bandwidth portion. However, in some cases, such as when a bandwidth portion includes a single resource block group, the specified formula may produce different resource block group sizes for the first resource block group and the last resource block group, even if the first resource block group and the last resource block group are the same resource block group. The results of these conflicts may result in errors in resource allocations made by the base station and resource identifications made by the UE.

[0093] In addition, similar techniques may be used to identify precoding resource block groups within various bandwidth portions in the carrier bandwidth. The UE may be configured to identify the size of the first precoding resource block group and the last precoding resource block group for a bandwidth portion. If the bandwidth portion includes a single precoding resource block group, the UE may identify different sizes for the first precoding resource block group and the last precoding resource block group, even if the first precoding resource block group and the last precoding resource block group are the same precoding resource block group. The results of these conflicts may also lead to errors in resource allocations made by the base station and resource identifications made by the UE.

[0094] Various techniques described herein can be used to avoid these potential errors. In one example technique, a base station may identify a specific resource allocation (e.g., a type 1 allocation) in the downlink control information transmitted to the UE so that the described errors can be avoided. The base station may identify a specific resource allocation when determining that the identified transmission configuration produces a bandwidth portion size less than or equal to a bandwidth portion size threshold and further based on the resource block group size produced by the transmission configuration. Thus, instead of allocating resources according to the first allocation type (which may potentially cause the described errors), the base station instructs the UE to utilize resource allocations that avoid the possibility of such errors. In other examples, the UE and the base station may be configured to set the resource block group size to be equal to the bandwidth portion size when the UE and the base station determine that certain conditions exist in the transmission configuration. These techniques can be similarly used to avoid errors caused in the allocation of precoded resource block groups.

[0095] Aspects of the disclosure are initially described in the context of a wireless communication system. Aspects of the disclosure are further described in the context of a wireless communication system illustrating communication between a base station and a UE, a process flow diagram illustrating a base station-specified resource allocation type, a process flow diagram illustrating a calculation-based resource block group size assignment, and a process flow diagram illustrating a comparison-based resource block group size assignment. Aspects of the disclosure are further illustrated and described by and with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow diagrams related to determining a transmission configuration.

[0096] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 that supports determining a transmission configuration for a resource block group and a precoding resource block group according to various aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The wireless communication system 100 includes a base station 105, a UE 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network, an advanced LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a new radio (NR) network. In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low latency communications, or communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices.

[0097] The base station 105 may communicate wirelessly with the UE 115 via one or more base station antennas. The base station 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a Node B, an evolved Node B (eNB), a next generation Node B, or a Gigabit Node B (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a Home Node B, a Home Evolved Node B, or some other suitable terminology. The wireless communication system 100 may include different types of base stations 105 (e.g., macro cell base stations or small cell base stations). The UE 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of base stations 105 and network equipment (including macro eNBs, small cell eNBs, gNBs, relay base stations, etc.).

[0098] Each base station 105 may be associated with a particular geographic coverage area 110 in which it supports communications with various UEs 115. Each base station 105 may provide communications coverage for a respective geographic coverage area 110 via a communications link 125, and the communications link 125 between the base station 105 and the UE 115 may utilize one or more carriers. The communications link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. Downlink transmissions may also be referred to as forward link transmissions, and uplink transmissions may also be referred to as reverse link transmissions.

[0099] The geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 may be divided into sectors that constitute a portion of the geographic coverage area 110, and each sector may be associated with a cellular cell. For example, each base station 105 may provide communication coverage for a macrocellular cell, a small cellular cell, a hotspot, or other types of cellular cells, or various combinations thereof. In some examples, the base station 105 may be mobile and therefore provide communication coverage for a mobile geographic coverage area 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, and the overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by the same base station 105 or different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous LTE / LTE-A / LTE-A Pro or NR network, in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110.

[0100] The term "cell" refers to a logical communication entity for communicating with base station 105 (e.g., on a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier to distinguish adjacent cells operating via the same or different carriers (e.g., physical cell identifier (PCID), virtual cell identifier (VCID)). In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types that may provide access to different types of devices (e.g., machine type communication (MTC), narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), or others). In some cases, the term "cell" may refer to a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which the logical entity operates.

[0101] Each UE 115 can be dispersed throughout the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 can be stationary or mobile. UE 115 can also be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable term, wherein "device" can also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client. UE 115 can also be a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 can also refer to a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or an MTC device, etc., which can be implemented in various items (such as electrical appliances, vehicles, meters, etc.).

[0102] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automated communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with a base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communications from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay the information to a central server or application, which may utilize the information or present the information to a person interacting with the program or application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or implement automated behavior of machines. Examples of applications for MTC devices include: smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, health care monitoring, field survival monitoring, weather and geographic event monitoring, queue management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based commercial charging.

[0103] Some UEs 115 may be configured to employ a reduced power consumption mode of operation, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode that supports unidirectional communication via transmission or reception but does not support simultaneous transmission and reception). In some examples, half-duplex communication may be performed with a reduced peak rate. Other power saving techniques for UE 115 include entering a power saving "deep sleep" mode when not engaged in active communications, or operating over a limited bandwidth (e.g., in accordance with narrowband communications). In some cases, UE 115 may be designed to support critical functions (e.g., mission critical functions), and the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to provide ultra-reliable communications for these functions.

[0104] In some cases, UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or device-to-device (D2D) protocol). One or more UEs in a group of UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105. Other UEs 115 in this group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105, or may not be able to receive transmissions from the base station 105 for other reasons. In some cases, each group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, in which each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some cases, the base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between UEs 115 without involving the base station 105.

[0105] The base stations 105 may communicate with the core network 130 and with each other. For example, the base stations 105 may interface with the core network 130 via a backhaul link 132 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3, or other interfaces). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105) or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130) on a backhaul link 134 (e.g., via X2, Xn, or other interfaces).

[0106] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC), which may include at least one mobility management entity (MME), at least one serving gateway (S-GW), and at least one packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW). The MME may manage non-access layer (e.g., control plane) functions such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UEs 115 served by base stations 105 associated with the EPC. User IP packets may be delivered through the S-GW, which itself may be connected to the P-GW. The P-GW may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The P-GW may be connected to network operator IP services. Operator IP services may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), or packet switched (PS) streaming services.

[0107] At least some network devices (such as base stations 105) may include subcomponents, such as access network entities, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity may communicate with each UE 115 through a number of other access network transport entities, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission / reception points (TRPs). In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and access network controllers) or merged into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0108] The wireless communication system 100 can operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). In general, the 300 MHz to 3 GHz region is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths are in the range of from about 1 decimeter to 1 meter long. UHF waves can be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features. However, these waves can penetrate various structures sufficiently for macro cells to provide services to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmission of UHF waves can be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 km) compared to transmission using lower frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portion of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0109] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the Super High Frequency (SHF) region using frequency bands from 3 GHz to 30 GHz, also known as centimeter bands. The SHF region includes frequency bands that may be opportunistically used by devices that may be able to tolerate interference from other users, such as the 5 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band.

[0110] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the extremely high frequency (EHF) division of the spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz), which is also referred to as the millimeter band. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support millimeter wave (mmW) communications between the UE 115 and the base station 105, and the EHF antenna of the corresponding device may be even smaller and more closely spaced than the UHF antenna. In some cases, this may facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the UE 115. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The technology disclosed herein may be adopted across transmissions using one or more different frequency divisions, and the use of frequency bands specified across these frequency divisions may differ by country or regulatory agency.

[0111] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may employ license assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (such as a 5 GHz ISM band). When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, wireless devices (such as base stations 105 and UE 115) may employ a listen-before-talk (LBT) procedure to ensure that the frequency channel is clear before transmitting data. In some cases, operations in unlicensed bands may be based on carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., LAA) in coordination with component carriers operating in licensed bands. Operations in unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, peer-to-peer transmissions, or a combination of these. Duplexing in unlicensed spectrum may be based on frequency division duplexing (FDD), time division duplexing (TDD), or a combination of the two.

[0112] In some examples, the base station 105 or the UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, or beamforming. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may use a transmission scheme between a transmitting device (e.g., the base station 105) and a receiving device (e.g., the UE 115), wherein the transmitting device is equipped with multiple antennas and the receiving device is equipped with one or more antennas. MIMO communication may employ multipath signal propagation to increase spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers, which may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, the transmitting device may transmit multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Similarly, the receiving device may receive multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Each of these multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams. Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to the same receiving device, and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to multiple devices.

[0113] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105 or a UE 115) to shape or direct an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam or a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array so that signals propagating at a particular orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals communicated via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying a particular amplitude and phase shift to the signal carried via each antenna element associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation).

[0114] In one example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with the UE 115. For example, some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be transmitted multiple times by the base station 105 in different directions, which may include a signal being transmitted according to different beamforming weight sets associated with different transmission directions. The transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by the base station 105 or a receiving device, such as the UE 115) to identify the beam direction used by the base station 105 for subsequent transmission and / or reception.

[0115] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a particular recipient device, may be transmitted by base station 105 in a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with a recipient device, such as UE 115). In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmissions along a single beam direction may be determined based at least in part on signals transmitted in different beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions, and UE 115 may report to base station 105 an indication of the signals received by it with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality. Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may use similar techniques for transmitting signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., for identifying a beam direction used by UE 115 for subsequent transmission or reception) or for transmitting signals in a single direction (e.g., for transmitting data to a recipient device).

[0116] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115, which may be an example of a mmW receiving device) may try multiple receive beams when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from base station 105. For example, the receiving device may try multiple receive directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or processing received signals according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different receive beams or receive directions. In some examples, the receiving device may use a single receive beam to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). The single receive beam may be aligned on a beam direction determined at least in part based on listening according to different receive beam directions (e.g., a beam direction determined to have the highest signal strength, highest signal-to-noise ratio, or other acceptable signal quality based at least in part on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0117] In some cases, the antennas of a base station 105 or a UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays that may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly, such as an antenna tower. In some cases, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with a base station 105 may be located at different geographic locations. A base station 105 may have an antenna array having several rows and columns of antenna ports that the base station 105 may use to support beamforming for communications with a UE 115. Likewise, a UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations.

[0118] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may be a packet-based network that operates according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication of the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer may be IP-based. The radio link control (RLC) layer may perform packet segmentation and reassembly to communicate on a logical channel. The media access control (MAC) layer may perform priority handling and multiplex logical channels into transport channels. The MAC layer may also use a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to provide retransmission of the MAC layer, thereby improving link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer may provide the establishment, configuration and maintenance of an RRC connection for a radio bearer that supports user plane data between UE115 and base station 105 or core network 130. At the physical layer, transport channels may be mapped to physical channels.

[0119] In some cases, UE 115 and base station 105 may support retransmission of data to increase the likelihood that the data is successfully received. HARQ feedback is a technique that increases the likelihood of correctly receiving data on communication link 125. HARQ may include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC), and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve the throughput of the MAC layer in poor radio conditions (e.g., signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some cases, a wireless device may support simultaneous slot HARQ feedback, where the device may provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol in the time slot. In other cases, the device may provide HARQ feedback in a subsequent time slot or according to some other time interval.

[0120] The time interval in LTE or NR can be represented by a basic time unit (which may refer to a sampling period T, for example). s =1 / 30,720,000 seconds). The time intervals of the communication resources may be organized according to radio frames each having a duration of 10 milliseconds (ms), where the frame period may be expressed as T f =307,200Ts . A radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) ranging from 0 to 1023. Each frame may include 10 subframes numbered from 0 to 9, and each subframe may have a duration of 1 ms. A subframe may be further divided into 2 time slots, each having a duration of 0.5 ms, and each time slot may contain 6 or 7 modulation codeword periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix added before each codeword period). Excluding the cyclic prefix, each codeword period may contain 2048 sampling periods. In some cases, a subframe may be the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In other cases, the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be shorter than a subframe or may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of a shortened TTI (sTTI) or in a selected component carrier using sTTI).

[0121] In some wireless communication systems, a time slot may be further divided into a plurality of mini-slots containing one or more symbols. In some instances, a symbol of a mini-slot or a mini-slot may be the minimum scheduling unit. For example, each symbol may vary in duration depending on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band. Further, some wireless communication systems may implement time slot aggregation, wherein a plurality of time slots or mini-slots are aggregated together and used for communication between UE 115 and base station 105.

[0122] The term "carrier" refers to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting communications on the communication link 125. For example, a carrier of the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band that operates according to a physical layer channel for a given radio access technology. Each physical layer channel may carry user data, control information, or other signaling. A carrier may be associated with a predefined frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel grid for discovery by a UE 115. A carrier may be downlink or uplink (e.g., in FDD mode), or configured to carry downlink communications and uplink communications (e.g., in TDD mode). In some examples, a signal waveform transmitted on a carrier may include multiple subcarriers (e.g., using a multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)).

[0123] For different radio access technologies (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR), the organizational structure of the carrier can be different. For example, the communication on the carrier can be organized according to TTIs or time slots, each of which can include user data and control information or signaling to support decoding of the user data. The carrier can also include dedicated acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals or system information, etc.) and control signaling to coordinate the operation of the carrier. In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), the carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling to coordinate the operation of other carriers.

[0124] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. In some examples, control information transmitted in a physical control channel may be distributed in a cascaded manner between different control regions (e.g., between a common control region or a common search space and one or more UE-specific control regions or UE-specific search spaces).

[0125] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of the radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as the "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of several predetermined bandwidths of a carrier for a particular radio access technology (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 MHz). In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on part or all of the carrier bandwidth. In other examples, some UEs 115 may be configured to operate using a narrowband protocol type associated with a predefined portion or range within a carrier (e.g., a set of subcarriers or resource blocks (RBs)) (e.g., an "in-band" deployment of a narrowband protocol type).

[0126] In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may include a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme). Thus, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of UE 115 can be. In a MIMO system, wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and space resources (e.g., space layers), and the use of multiple space layers may further increase the data rate of communication with UE 115.

[0127] A device (e.g., base station 105 or UE 115) of wireless communication system 100 may have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configurable to support communication on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, wireless communication system 100 may include base stations 105 and / or UEs 115 that support simultaneous communication via carriers associated with more than one different carrier bandwidths.

[0128] The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 on multiple cells or carriers, a feature that may be referred to as carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used with both FDD and TDD component carriers.

[0129] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize an enhanced component carrier (eCC). An eCC may be characterized by one or more features including a wider carrier or frequency channel bandwidth, a shorter symbol duration, a shorter TTI duration, or a modified control channel configuration. In some cases, an eCC may be associated with a carrier aggregation configuration or a dual connectivity configuration (e.g., when multiple serving cells have suboptimal or non-ideal backhaul links). An eCC may also be configured for use in an unlicensed spectrum or a shared spectrum (e.g., where more than one operator is allowed to use the spectrum). An eCC characterized by a wide carrier bandwidth may include one or more segments that may be utilized by a UE 115 that is not capable of monitoring the entire carrier bandwidth or is otherwise configured to use a limited carrier bandwidth (e.g., to save power).

[0130] In some cases, an eCC may utilize a different symbol duration than other component carriers, which may include using a reduced symbol duration compared to the symbol duration of other component carriers. A shorter symbol duration may be associated with an increased spacing between adjacent subcarriers. A device utilizing an eCC (such as a UE 115 or a base station 105) may transmit a wideband signal (e.g., according to a frequency channel or carrier bandwidth of 20, 40, 60, 80 MHz, etc.) with a reduced symbol duration (e.g., 16.67 microseconds). A TTI in an eCC may include one or more symbol periods. In some cases, the TTI duration (i.e., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable.

[0131] The wireless communication system 100 may be an NR system that may utilize any combination of licensed, shared, and unlicensed spectrum bands, etc. The flexibility of eCC symbol duration and subcarrier spacing may allow eCC to be used across multiple spectrums. In some examples, NR shared spectrum may improve spectrum utilization and spectrum efficiency, particularly through dynamic vertical (e.g., across frequency domain) and horizontal (e.g., across time domain) sharing of resources.

[0132] In some wireless communication radio access technologies, the base station 105 may allocate different resource structures within a frequency bandwidth (such as a carrier bandwidth). In some cases, the allocation of resource structures within a frequency bandwidth may be referred to as an identification of a transmission configuration. In some cases, the identification of the transmission configuration includes identifying a resource allocation type based on carrier bandwidth, operating conditions, UE capabilities, etc. In some examples, the resource allocation type may be indicated by a higher layer signaling, and in some cases, the base station 105 may transmit downlink signaling (e.g., downlink control information (DCI), RRC signaling, etc.) including an indication of a grant of resource allocation for downlink or uplink transmission. The DCI may include information about downlink scheduling assignments, uplink resource grants, transmission schemes, uplink power control, HARQ information, MCS, and other information. The size and format of the DCI message may vary depending on the type and quantity of information carried by the DCI and factors such as bandwidth, number of antenna ports, and duplex mode.

[0133] The DCI may indicate a resource allocation within a carrier (e.g., a portion or range, such as a set of subcarriers, RBs, or RBGs) in various ways. A type 0 resource allocation (e.g., for a finer granularity of resource allocation) may refer to a bitmap that includes a bit for each RBG. The UE 115 may receive a type 0 resource allocation (e.g., via a bitmap indicated by the DCI) and may identify which RBGs are included in the grant based on the RBG configuration (e.g., the configuration or index of the RBG) and the individual 1s indicated by the bitmap. A type 1 resource allocation may refer to a contiguous resource allocation indicated by a starting RB or RBG and an ending RB or RBG. In some cases, the use of type 0 or type 1 resource allocation may also depend on higher layer signaling, and the DCI may indicate the allocation based on the higher layer signaling.

[0134] In a Type 0 allocation, the RBG size of the first RBG and the last RBG in a bandwidth part may be determined using the formula specified by the Type 0 allocation, as will be referenced below. Figure 2 Detailed description is given in detail below. However, in some cases, such as when the bandwidth portion includes a single RBG, the specified formula may produce different RBG sizes for the first RBG and the last RBG, even if the first RBG and the last RBG are the same RBG. These conflicting results may lead to errors in resource allocation by base station 105 and resource identification by UE 115.

[0135] In addition, similar techniques may be used to identify precoding resource block groups (PRGs) within each BWP in the carrier bandwidth. The UE 115 may be configured to identify the size of the first and last PRGs of the BWP. If the BWP includes a single PRG, the UE may identify different sizes for the first and last PRGs based on the precoding granularity, even if the first and last PRGs are the same PRG. The results of these conflicts may also result in errors in resource allocations made by the base station 105 and resource identifications made by the UE 115.

[0136] Various techniques described herein can be used to avoid these potential errors. These techniques are applicable to both resource allocation via higher layer signaling and resource allocation based on DCI. In an example technique, the base station 105 may identify a specific resource allocation (e.g., downlink resource allocation type 1) in the downlink control information transmitted to the UE 115 so that the described error can be avoided. The base station 105 may identify a specific resource allocation when determining that the identified transmission configuration produces a bandwidth portion size less than or equal to a bandwidth portion size threshold and further based on the resource block group size generated by the transmission configuration. Thus, instead of allocating resources according to a second allocation type (e.g., type 0 allocation) (which may potentially cause the described error), the base station 105 instructs the UE 115 to use a first resource allocation type (e.g., type 1 allocation) that avoids the possibility of such errors. In other examples, the UE 115 and the base station 105 may be configured to set the RBG size to be equal to the BWP size when the UE 115 and the base station 105 determine that certain conditions exist in the transmission configuration. These techniques can be similarly used to avoid errors caused in the allocation of precoded resource block groups.

[0137] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports determining a transmission configuration for a resource block group and a precoding resource block group according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The wireless communication system includes a base station 105 and a UE 115. The base station 105 can communicate with the UE 115 on a downlink communication link 240 and an uplink communication link. The DCI 235 in the downlink communication link 240 can schedule downlink and uplink data communications. In the illustrated example, the DCI 235 schedules a communication resource structure in a carrier bandwidth 210.

[0138] The carrier bandwidth 210 includes CRBs (e.g., CRB 220), PRBs 205, VRBs (not shown), and BWPs 215. BWPs 215 include subsets of contiguous PRBs, which may be subsets of contiguous subsets of CRBs in the carrier bandwidth 210. Accordingly, PRBs 205 are defined within each BWP 215. Each BWP 215 may have separate configurations, such as parameter design, bandwidth size, frequency location, and control resource set (CORESET). Each BWP 215 may be defined relative to a point A 230 corresponding to a center point of CRB0 220 of the carrier bandwidth 210. For example, BWP 0 215-a may be defined based on a parameter start BWP0 225-a indicating the first PRB (e.g., PRB0 205-a) of BWP 0 relative to CRB0 220. Each BWP 215 may include one or more RBGs (not shown), which may be a set of contiguous virtual resource blocks defined by higher layer parameters. The BWP 215 and RBGs may be allocated by the base station 105 according to the DCI 235, higher layer signaling, or both. As mentioned, the base station 105 may indicate various allocation schemes (e.g., allocation types) for allocating resources of the carrier bandwidth 210. The allocation scheme may be selected based on factors such as granularity, UE communication type (e.g., low latency communication), type of UE 115 (e.g., Internet of Things (IoT) device), etc. In some cases, the allocation scheme may be determined based on a transmission configuration, which may be indicated by higher layer signaling.

[0139] Each allocation scheme may specify a technique for determining the location of BWP 215 and the number of RBGs within BWP 215, as well as other information. In some cases, the allocation scheme may specify a technique (e.g., a formula) for determining the number of RBGs within BWP 215. For example, in downlink resource allocation type 0, the resource block assignment information may include a bitmap indicating the RBGs allocated to UE 115. According to downlink resource allocation type 0, the resource block assignment information for UE 115 of size The total number of RBGs (N RBG )Depend on Given, where: the size of the first RBG is

[0140] However, the final value of the RBG size depends on various conditions.

[0141] if The final RBG size is

[0142]

[0143] Otherwise, the final RBG size is P. (Formula 2b)

[0144] Accordingly, the size of the edge RBG (eg, the first RBG and the last RBG of BWP 215) may be determined using Formula 1 and Formulas 2a and 2b. However, in the case where P=2 (eg, the RBG size is 2), and (e.g., the size of BWP 215 is one resource block), the first RBG size and the last RBG size may produce different results. In such a case, the first RBG and the last RBG are the same RBG because the BWP size is one resource block.

[0145] Formula 1 can be obtained:

[0146] And formula 2 can be obtained:

[0147] Accordingly, in this case, the first RBG and the last RBG are the same RBG, which means that the two formulas provide contradictory results. The base station 105 may incur errors in allocating resources in such a case, and / or the UE 115 may incur errors in decoding received signals in such a case.

[0148] In a first option for avoiding such errors, the base station 105 may configure the UE 115 (e.g., via the DCI 235) such that the UE 115 does not expect the BWP 215 size to be less than the RBG size (e.g., P). In other words, the base station 105 may allocate resources such that situations where contradictory results may occur may be avoided. To avoid errors, the base station 105 may consider whether the BWP size is less than or equal to a threshold based on the resource block group size when identifying the transmission configuration. For example, if during identification of the transmission configuration, the base station 105 determines that the BWP size is 1 and the RBG size is 2, the base station 105 may allocate resources using a type 1 allocation. In a type 1 allocation (e.g., the second resource allocation type), the formula for calculating the first RBG size and the last RBG size is not used (as may be the case with a type 0 allocation). Instead, in a type 1 allocation (e.g., the first resource allocation type), the DCI 235 may indicate a starting resource block and an ending resource block, where the resource blocks within the resource block group are contiguous. Based on the type 1 allocation, base station 105 can avoid errors in allocating resources for transmission, and UE 115 can avoid errors in decoding received transmissions based on DCI 235 indicating the type 1 allocation. Similarly, if the identified transmission configuration indicates that the BWP size is less than or equal to three resource blocks and the RBG size is equal to four resource blocks, base station 105 can allocate resources using the type 1 allocation.

[0149] In some cases, the threshold may be based on or equal to the RBG size. As mentioned, if the RBG size is two resource blocks and the BWP size is less than 2 (e.g., one resource block), a Type 1 allocation may be specified. Similarly, if the RBG size is three resource blocks and the BWP is less than or equal to three, a Type 1 allocation may be specified. Accordingly, the threshold may be set to be less than or equal to the BWP size in some cases.

[0150] In a second option for avoiding such errors, the base station 105 and the UE 115 may be configured to account for edge cases that potentially cause errors by specifying the RBG size for the transmission configuration to be equal to the BWP size based on the calculated number of RBGs being equal to one. In other words, if the number of RBGs in the BWP 215 is equal to one, the RBG size is specified to be equal to the BWP size. Accordingly, the base station 105 may determine the initial RBG size and the BWP size based on various factors and using a type 0 resource allocation. After determining the RBG size and the BWP size, the base station 105 may calculate the number of RBGs based on the provided formula or according to a type 0 resource allocation. In other words, the base station 105 calculates the number of RBGs according to the formula specified by the type 0 allocation. If the number of RBGs is equal to one, the base station 105 may specify (e.g., modify) the RBG size to be equal to the BWP size.

[0151] UE 115 may receive DCI 235 indicating a type 0 resource allocation, determine the RBG size, BWP size, and BWP start based on the transmission configuration, and calculate the number of RBGs based on the RBG size, BWP size, and BWP start. In some cases, the RBG size, BWP size, and BWP start are indicated in DCI 235. UE 115 may calculate the number of RBGs to be equal to one. In such cases, UE 115 may specify the RBG size to be equal to the BWP size and decode the corresponding transmission based on the specification.

[0152] In a third option for avoiding errors, the base station 105 and the UE 115 may be configured to account for edge cases that potentially cause errors by specifying the RBG size for the transmission configuration to be equal to the BWP size based on a comparison between the sum of the BWP size and the starting bandwidth portion modulo the RBG size and the RBG size. The third option may be illustrated via the following formula:

[0153] if Then the RBG size is

[0154] Accordingly, the base station 105 may determine the initial RBG size and BWP size based on various factors and using type 0 resource allocation. After determining the RBG size and BWP size, the base station 105 may implement a comparison. Based on the result of the comparison, the base station 105 may specify (e.g., modify) the RBG size to be equal to the BWP size.

[0155] UE 115 may receive DCI 235 indicating a type 0 resource allocation, determine the RBG size and the BWP size based on the transmission configuration, and perform a comparison. Based on the comparison, UE 115 may designate the RBG size equal to the BWP size and decode the corresponding transmission based on the designation.

[0156] Similar errors may occur when determining the size of PRGs within bandwidth portion 215. For example, when the precoding granularity is based on one of the values 2 or 4, the following procedure may be used to identify the size of the edge (eg, first and last) PRGs in a BWP.

[0157] The first PRG size is given by

[0158]

[0159] However, the final value of the PRG size depends on various conditions. If

[0160] The final PRG size is then given by

[0161]

[0162] And if The final PRG size is

[0163] P BWP,i .(Formula 4b)

[0164] If P BWP,i =2, and Then using formulas 3, 4a and 4b, the size of the first PRG is: 2-0mod2=2, and the size of the last PRG is: (0+1)mod2=1. However, in this case, the first PRG and the last PRG are the same PRG, which means that the two formulas provide contradictory results.

[0165] In a first option for avoiding such errors, the base station 105 may configure the UE 115 (e.g., via the DCI 235) such that the UE 115 may not expect the BWP 215 size to be less than the PRG size. In other words, the base station 105 may allocate resources so that situations where contradictory results may occur can be avoided. To avoid errors, the base station 105 may consider whether the BWP size is less than or equal to a threshold based on the PRG size when identifying the transmission configuration. For example, if during identification of the transmission configuration, the base station 105 determines that the BWP size is 1 and the RBG size is 2, the base station 105 may allocate resources using a wideband allocation (e.g., a wideband precoding granularity). Accordingly, the formula for calculating the first PRG size and the last PRG size may not be used. Accordingly, the base station 105 may avoid errors in allocating resources for transmission, and the UE 115 may avoid errors in decoding received transmissions. Similarly, if the identified transmission configuration indicates that the BWP size is less than or equal to three resource blocks and the PRG size is equal to four resource blocks, the base station 105 may allocate resources using a wideband allocation.

[0166] In a second option for avoiding such errors, the base station 105 and the UE 115 may be configured to account for edge cases that potentially cause errors by specifying the PRG size for the transmission configuration to be equal to the BWP size based on the calculated number of PRGs being equal to one. In other words, if the number of PRGs in the BWP 215 is equal to one, the PRG size is specified to be equal to the BWP size. Accordingly, the base station 105 may determine the initial PRG size and the BWP size based on various factors. After determining the PRG size and the BWP size, the base station 105 may calculate the number of PRGs based on the provided formula. If the number of PRGs is equal to one, the base station 105 may specify (e.g., modify) the PRG size to be equal to the BWP size.

[0167] UE 115 may receive DCI 235 indicating a particular resource allocation, determine the PRG size and the BWP size based on the transmission configuration, and calculate the number of PRGs based on the PRG size, the BWP size, and the start of the BWP. UE 115 may calculate the number of PRGs to be equal to one. In such a case, UE 115 may specify the PRG size to be equal to the BWP size and decode the corresponding transmission based on the specification.

[0168] In a third option for avoiding errors, the base station 105 and the UE 115 may be configured to account for edge cases that potentially cause errors by specifying the PRG size for the transmission configuration to be equal to the BWP size based on a comparison between the sum of the BWP size and the starting bandwidth portion modulo the PRG size and the PRG size. The third option may be illustrated via the following formula:

[0169] if Then the PRG size is

[0170] Accordingly, the base station 105 may determine the initial PRG size and BWP size based on various factors. After determining the PRG size and BWP size, the base station 105 may implement a comparison. Based on the result of the comparison, the base station 105 may specify (e.g., modify) the PRG size to be equal to the BWP size.

[0171] UE 115 may receive DCI 235 indicating a particular resource allocation, determine a PRG size and a BWP size based on the transmission configuration, and perform a comparison. Based on the result of the comparison, UE 115 may designate the PRG size to be equal to the BWP size and decode the corresponding transmission based on the designation. The PRG value (e.g., P BWP,i ) can be provided to the UE by DCI, RRC or both.

[0172] Figure 3 An example of a process flow diagram 300 that supports determining a transmission configuration for a resource block group and precoding a resource block group in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process flow diagram 300 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The process flow diagram includes a base station 105 and a UE 115.

[0173] At 305, the base station 105 identifies a transmission configuration. The transmission configuration may be identified for scheduling transmissions to the UE 115 or for transmitting a downlink grant to the UE 115. In some cases, the transmission configuration may be determined based on carrier bandwidth, UE capabilities, communication environment, etc. In some cases, the transmission configuration may be based on a resource allocation type indicated by higher layer signaling. The transmission configuration may indicate a resource block group size and a bandwidth portion size. The resource block group size and the bandwidth portion size may be determined based on the resource allocation type (e.g., allocation type 0).

[0174] At 310, the base station 105 specifies a first resource allocation type for the transmission configuration instead of a second resource allocation type for the transmission configuration for allocating resources to the carrier bandwidth. The designation may be based at least in part on the bandwidth portion size being less than or equal to a bandwidth portion size threshold and further based at least in part on a resource block group size. For example, the base station 105 may determine that the bandwidth portion size is one resource block and the resource block group size is two resource blocks. In another example, the base station 105 may determine that the bandwidth portion size is less than or equal to three resource blocks and the resource block group size is equal to four resource blocks. In some cases, the first resource allocation type is a type 1 allocation and the second resource allocation type is a type 0 allocation.

[0175] At 315, the base station 105 transmits downlink control information to the UE 115. The downlink control information may indicate a first resource allocation type for the transmission configuration. Based on a type 1 allocation, the downlink control information may indicate a resource block start parameter and a number of resource blocks.

[0176] At 320, the base station 105 transmits a data transmission to the UE 115. The data may be allocated according to the first resource allocation type. At 325, the UE 115 decodes the received data transmission based on the first resource allocation type indicated in the DCI.

[0177] Figure 3 The illustrated operations may be similarly used in a precoding resource block group scenario. For example, at 305, the base station 105 may identify a transmission configuration indicating a bandwidth portion size and a precoding resource block group size. At 310, the base station 105 may specify a first resource allocation type (e.g., wideband) over a second resource allocation type (e.g., 2 or 4) based on the bandwidth portion size being less than or equal to a bandwidth portion size threshold. At 315, the base station 105 may transmit a DCI indicating an allocation for a precoding resource block group, and at 320, the base station 105 may transmit a data transmission, which is decoded by the UE 115 at 325 according to the indicated allocation.

[0178] Figure 4 An example of a process flow diagram 400 that supports determining a transmission configuration for a resource block group and precoding a resource block group in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process flow diagram 400 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The process flow diagram 400 can include a base station 105 and a UE 115.

[0179] At 410, UE 115 may transmit a UE capability indication to base station 105. The capability indication may indicate that UE 115 is capable of decoding messages based on bandwidth portion size designation, as described herein. If UE 115 is not capable of performing bandwidth portion size designation, base station 105 may implement other techniques, as described herein.

[0180] At 415, the base station 105 (e.g., the first device) identifies a transmission configuration for a carrier bandwidth allocated for communication with the UE 115 (e.g., the second device). The transmission configuration may indicate a resource block group size and a bandwidth portion size. In some cases, the transmission configuration may be identified based on a type 0 allocation and based on various factors such as carrier bandwidth, UE capabilities, communication environment, etc.

[0181] At 420, base station 105 calculates the number of resource block groups for the transmission configuration based at least in part on the indicated resource block group size and the bandwidth portion size and according to the first resource allocation type. In some cases, the first resource allocation type may be a type 0 resource allocation, which may provide a formula for calculating the number of resource block groups.

[0182] At 425, the base station 105 specifies a resource block group size for the transmission configuration to be equal to the bandwidth portion size based at least on the calculated number of resource block groups being equal to one. At 430, the base station 105 communicates with the UE 115 by transmitting a data transmission to the UE 115 using the carrier bandwidth and in accordance with the transmission configuration. The data transmission may be allocated in accordance with the specified resource block group size. In some cases, the DCI transmission may indicate the allocation type to the UE 115.

[0183] At 435, the UE 115 (eg, first device) may identify a transmission configuration of the received data transmission. In some cases, the identification is based on a received DCI indicating a resource allocation type. The transmission configuration may indicate a resource block group size and a bandwidth portion size.

[0184] At 440, UE 115 may calculate the number of resource block groups for the transmission configuration based at least in part on the resource block group size and the bandwidth portion size and in accordance with the first resource allocation type. For example, UE 115 may calculate the resource block group size in accordance with a type 0 allocation, which may specify a formula for calculating the resource block group size.

[0185] At 445, UE 115 may specify a resource block group size for the transmission configuration equal to the bandwidth portion size based at least in part on the calculated number of resource block groups being equal to one. At 450, UE 115 decodes the data transmission based on the specified resource block group size.

[0186] Figure 4 The illustrated operations may be similarly used in a precoding resource block group scenario. For example, at 405, the UE may indicate the ability to specify a precoding resource block group size based on a calculation. At 415, the base station 105 may identify a transmission configuration indicating a transmission portion size and a precoding resource block group size. At 420, the base station 105 may calculate the number of precoding resource block groups for the transmission configuration based on the precoding resource block group size and the bandwidth portion size. At 425, the base station 105 may specify a PRG size based on the calculated number of precoding resource block groups being equal to one, and at 430, the base station 105 may send a data transmission to the UE that is allocated according to the PRG size specification. [0188] At 510, UE 115 may transmit a UE capability indication to base station 105. The capability indication may indicate that UE 115 is capable of decoding messages based on bandwidth portion size designation, as described herein. The transmission configuration may indicate a resource block group size and a bandwidth portion size. In some cases, the transmission configuration may be identified based on a type 0 allocation and based on various factors such as carrier bandwidth, UE capabilities, communication environment, etc.

[0190] At 520, the base station 105 performs a comparison to determine whether the sum of the identified bandwidth portion size and the starting bandwidth portion of the carrier bandwidth modulo the resource block group size is less than or equal to the resource block group size.

[0191] At 525, the base station 105 specifies a resource block group size for the transmission configuration to be equal to the bandwidth portion size based at least on the determination. At 530, the base station 105 communicates with the UE 115 by transmitting a data transmission to the UE 115 using the carrier bandwidth and in accordance with the transmission configuration. The data transmission may be allocated in accordance with the specified resource block group size. In some cases, the DCI transmission may indicate the allocation type to the UE 115.

[0192] At 535, the UE 115 (eg, first device) may identify a transmission configuration of the received data transmission. In some cases, the identification is based on a received DCI indicating a resource allocation type. The transmission configuration may indicate a resource block group size and a bandwidth portion size.

[0193] At 540, the UE 115 may perform a comparison to determine whether the sum of the identified bandwidth portion size and the starting bandwidth portion of the carrier bandwidth modulo the resource block group size is less than or equal to the resource block group size.

[0194] At 545, the UE 115 may specify a resource block group size for the transmission configuration equal to the bandwidth portion size based at least on the determination. At 550, the UE 115 decodes the data transmission based on the specified resource block group size.

For example, at 505, the UE may indicate the ability to specify a precoding resource block group size based on the comparison. At 515, the base station 105 may identify a transmission configuration indicating a transmission portion size and a precoding resource block group size. At 520, the base station 105 may compare to determine whether the sum of the bandwidth portion size and the starting bandwidth portion of the carrier bandwidth modulo the precoding resource block group size is less than or equal to the precoding resource block group size. At 525, the base station 105 may specify a PRG size based on the determination, and at 530, the base station 105 may send a data transmission to the UE that is allocated according to the PRG size specification. The UE 115 may similarly perform a procedure for decoding a transmission based on the specified PRG size.
