Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a prismatic battery cell, and more particularly to a prismatic battery cell with a thermal management function. Background Art

[0002] A rechargeable energy storage system (RESS, such as a prismatic battery) typically includes multiple electrode stacks. Each electrode stack includes an anode and a cathode separated by an electrically insulating separator material. The electrode stacks are typically placed adjacent to each other in a housing or shell to protect the electrode stacks from the surrounding environment. The housing is also used to contain an electrolyte within the housing and around the electrode stacks. Electrode stacks in RESS may experience uncontrolled thermal events, namely thermal runaway propagation (TRP). In a TRP event, an electrode that experiences uncontrolled thermal runaway (called a trigger electrode) may cause an increase in the temperature of an adjacent electrode stack. An increase in the temperature of one or more electrode stacks may cause an increase in the temperature and pressure of the entire RESS. An increase in pressure and temperature in the RESS due to the generation of gas may cause the seal of the RESS housing to leak.

[0031] The following description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the present disclosure, application, or uses.

[0032] Now refer to Figure 1A and Figure 1B , shows a perspective view of a prismatic cell 10 having a housing or casing 12 , electrode stacks 14 , 16 , and a thermal barrier 18 according to the present disclosure. Figure 1A The housing or shell 12 is schematically shown having a first side wall 20, a second side wall 22, a third side wall 24, a bottom side wall 26, a top side wall (not shown), and a front side wall (not shown). The present disclosure contemplates other housing configurations for the housing or shell 12 and is not limited to Figure 1A The exemplary housing shown. In addition, the housing 12 contains a suitable electrolyte. For example, the electrolyte is a liquid solution of an organic solvent and a lithium salt. The electrode stacks 14 and 16 are immersed in the electrolyte contained in the housing 12.

[0033] Continue to refer Figure 1A and Figure 1B, shows a perspective view of electrode stacks 14 and 16 and thermal barriers 18 forming a battery or stack assembly 28 according to the present disclosure. The electrode stack 14 consists of a negative electrode or anode electrode 30, a separator 32, and a positive electrode or cathode electrode 34. The anode electrode 30 is typically a thin metal plate that includes an electrode sheet 36 for providing an electrical connection between the anode electrode 30 and a terminal (not shown) on the outside of the housing. Similarly, the cathode electrode 34 is a thin metal plate that includes an electrode sheet 38 for providing an electrical connection between the cathode electrode 34 and another terminal (not shown) on the outside of the housing. The electrode sheets 36, 38 serve as current collectors. The voltage generated between the anode electrode 30 and the cathode electrode 34 is transmitted to an external device (not shown) through the terminals on the housing 12. For example, the anode electrode 30 and the electrode sheet 36 are made of copper or other suitable materials and are typically coated with graphite or graphite / silicon or other carbon-based materials or silicon oxide or lithiated silicon. For example, cathode electrode 34 and electrode sheet 38 are made of aluminum or other suitable material and are typically coated with a metal oxide such as lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) or nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) or lithium iron / manganese phosphate (LFP / LFMP) or lithium rich manganese (LMR).

[0034] The different metals (copper anode 30 and aluminum cathode 34) of the prismatic battery 10 produce a galvanic reaction in the battery 10. Copper (e.g., anode electrode 30) and aluminum (e.g., cathode electrode 34) have different standard reduction potentials, are connected to an external circuit, and are separated from each other by a separator 32. The aluminum, which has a lower potential, will oxidize and release electrons, while the copper, which has a higher potential, will reduce and accept electrons. This process of releasing and accepting electrons will produce an electric current that can be used to power a device.

[0035] The separator 32 is generally a thin porous film or material layer that is located between the anode electrode 30 and the cathode electrode 34 and prevents short circuits caused by contact between the anode and the cathode. The separator 32 allows lithium ions to pass through and complete the circuit. Porous and chemically stable composite materials such as composite materials made of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or other natural materials can be used as separators 32. In addition, inorganic nanoparticles such as TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3 and ZrO2 can also be used to produce coating composite materials for separators 32. The separator 32 increases the internal resistance of the prismatic battery 10, which reduces the power output and efficiency of the battery. The internal resistance depends on the thickness, porosity and composition of the separator 32. Preferably, thinner, more porous and more conductive separators can reduce resistance and improve the performance of the battery 10. The separator 32 is also selected to withstand high temperatures and manage thermal runaway, preventing uncontrollable increases in temperature due to exothermic reactions. In addition, the separator 32 has a high melting point and low shrinkage to avoid contact between the anode electrode 30 and the cathode electrode 34. The separator 32 has sufficient mechanical strength to resist puncture, tearing or deformation during manufacture and operation of the battery assembly 28. The separator 32 is also dimensionally stable and flexible, conforming to the shape of the electrodes 30, 34 and accommodating volume changes during cycling. The separator 32 is chemically inert and compatible with the electrolyte, electrodes 30, 34 and other battery components. In addition, the separator 32 has a low affinity for water or other impurities that can contaminate the electrolyte or cause corrosion of the electrodes 30, 34.

[0036] Similar to the electrode stack 14, the electrode stack 16 is composed of an anode electrode 40, a separator 42, and a cathode electrode 44. Although only one anode electrode 40 and one cathode electrode 44 separated by a separator 42 are shown in the drawings, the present disclosure contemplates that the arrangement of the anode electrode 40 and the cathode electrode 44 separated by the separator 42 can be repeated multiple times (i.e., ten to a hundred times or even more) in each electrode stack 14, 16. The anode electrode 40 includes an electrode sheet (not shown) for providing an electrical connection to the anode electrode 40. Similarly, the cathode electrode 44 includes an electrode sheet 48 for providing an electrical connection to the cathode electrode 44. The electrode stack 16 also includes a separator 42 disposed between the anode electrode 40 and the cathode electrode 44. The separator 42 has the same construction and composition as described above with respect to the separator 32.

[0037] Continue to refer Figure 1B, the thermal barrier 18 is disposed or positioned between the electrode stack 14 and the electrode stack 16. The thermal barrier 18 is an insulating material that is configured to prevent heat transfer from one stack to another. For example, the thermal barrier 18 is a synthetic porous ultralight material derived from a gel, wherein the liquid component of the gel has been replaced by a gas. The resulting material is called an aerogel, which is a solid with extremely low density and extremely low thermal conductivity. The aerogel of the thermal barrier 18 can be made of a variety of compounds, such as polymer-based aerogels that have the appearance and feel of rigid foam. The air volume content of the aerogel material ranges from 50% to 99.98%. The aerogel of the thermal barrier 18 has a porous solid network containing air pockets, wherein the air pockets occupy most of the space within the thermal barrier 18. The aerogel of the thermal barrier 18 prevents both conduction and convection modes of heat transfer. In addition, to prevent the electrolyte solution from penetrating the thermal barrier 18, the thermal barrier 18 is wrapped in a suitable non-ion permeable barrier, such as a polymer with laminated aluminum. Alternatively, the thermal barrier 18 may be encapsulated or overmolded in an aluminum laminate plastic (i.e., PET film) to prevent the electrolyte solution from penetrating the thermal barrier 18. Although only one thermal barrier 18 is shown with electrode stacks 14, 16 on either side of the thermal barrier 18, the present disclosure contemplates multiple thermal barriers 18 disposed between multiple electrode stacks 14, 16 all contained within a casing 12 to form a prismatic battery 10.

The battery assembly 100 also includes an insulating belt 52 wrapped around the outside of the electrode stacks 14, 16 and the thermal barrier 18. The insulating belt 52 has a first side 54 and a second side 56. The second side 56 is coated with a suitable adhesive and faces the outer surface of the electrode stacks 14, 16 and the thermal barrier 18. The insulating belt 52 with an adhesive coating is used to hold the battery assembly 100 together to form a single unit or assembly. In addition, the insulating belt 52 is made of a material that inhibits heat transfer or heat conduction from the electrode stacks 14, 16 to components outside the electrode stacks 14, 16. The insulating belt 52 is made of mica or other suitable non-thermally conductive material. For example, suitable mica tapes may include inorganic high dielectric tapes made from mica paper and laminated to reinforcing substrates such as woven and nonwoven glass cloth, nonwoven polyester mesh, and / or polyester films including polyimide. Mica tape sold by Goode EIS in Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province is an example of a suitable insulation tape 52.
