[0002] This application claims priority to US Serial No. 63 / 487,287, filed on February 28, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated by reference into this application. Technical Field
[0003] The present disclosure relates to a solid electrolyte layer having protrusions and an all-solid-state battery including the solid electrolyte layer. Background Art
[0004] To ensure good conductivity and low resistivity between the electrodes and electrolyte layers in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), high compression is usually applied during assembly. However, this compression increases the risk of internal short circuits, in which part of the anode layer, such as the edge, can contact part of the cathode layer. Notably, such short circuits can occur near the tabs when the anode and cathode current collectors in a multilayer battery are folded and welded together.
[0005] Conventional methods for assembling ASSBs rely on lower levels of pressure and / or uniaxial pressure to reduce the risk of short circuits. However, neither of these situations is ideal. Compared to higher levels of pressure, lower levels of pressure will result in relatively higher internal resistance, thereby reducing battery performance. Uniaxial pressure may lead to unsatisfactory performance. Therefore, there is still a need for technologies to address the short circuit problem. Summary of the invention

[0011] wherein the solid electrolyte layer is positioned between a first electrode and a second electrode of the plurality of first electrodes, and
[0012] wherein a first electrode tab of one of the plurality of first electrodes contacts another first electrode of the plurality of first electrodes, and
[0013] The first protrusion of the solid electrolyte layer is positioned to separate a first electrode tab of one of the plurality of first electrodes from a second electrode to prevent a short circuit therebetween. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0027] A battery assembly is disclosed herein, which allows pressure or extrusion to be applied during manufacturing while minimizing the risk of short circuit. In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides a battery assembly having a plurality of first electrodes, each of which has a first electrode tab extending therefrom; a plurality of solid electrolyte layers, at least one of which has a first protrusion; and a plurality of second electrodes, each of which has a second electrode tab extending therefrom. In some embodiments, the first protrusion of the solid electrolyte layer is aligned with the corresponding first electrode tab, so that when the first electrode tab is folded, the corresponding first protrusion is positioned between the first electrode tab and one of the second electrodes in the second electrode. Positioning the first protrusion of the solid electrolyte layer between the first electrode tab and the second electrode can prevent contact between the first electrode tab and the second electrode, thereby preventing a short circuit therebetween. Similarly, in some embodiments, the solid electrolyte layer may have a second protrusion, and the second protrusion of the solid electrolyte layer is aligned with the corresponding second electrode tab, so that when the second electrode tab is folded, the corresponding second protrusion is positioned between the second electrode tab and one of the first electrodes in the first electrode. Positioning the second protrusion of the solid electrolyte layer between the second electrode tab and the first electrode can prevent the second electrode tab from contacting the first electrode, thereby preventing a short circuit therebetween. The presence of the first protrusion positioned between the first electrode tab and the second electrode and / or the second protrusion positioned between the second electrode tab and the first electrode can also enable the use of a greater compressive force without having to worry about causing a short circuit when folding the first electrode tab and the second electrode tab, which can result in lower internal resistance and better performance in the battery assembly.
[0028] In some embodiments, the first electrode tabs are electrically connected, and the second electrode tabs are electrically connected. In some embodiments, the first electrode and the second electrode refer to the anode and cathode, respectively. In some embodiments, the first electrode and the second electrode refer to the cathode and the anode, respectively. In some embodiments, the protrusion of the solid electrolyte layer is a part of the solid electrolyte layer or a separate component next to the solid electrolyte layer. In some embodiments, the protrusion is bonded or adhered to the solid electrolyte layer.
[0029] In some embodiments, the first protrusion is geometrically aligned with the first electrode tab and / or the second protrusion is geometrically aligned with the second electrode tab.
[0030] In some embodiments, when the first electrode tab and the second electrode tab are folded, the first protrusion is positioned to separate the first electrode tab from the second electrode, and the second protrusion is positioned to separate the second electrode tab from the first electrode layer, thereby preventing a short circuit between the first electrode tab and the second electrode and a short circuit between the second electrode tab and the first electrode.
[0031] Figure 1A-Figure 1C , a first electrode, a solid electrolyte layer, and a second electrode are representatively shown. The anode layer (1) has an anode tab (1-1) extending therefrom. The solid electrolyte layer (2) has a first protrusion (2-1) and a second protrusion (2-2). The cathode layer (3) has a cathode tab (3-2) extending therefrom. In some embodiments, such as, for example Figure 3A and Figure 4A As shown, the layers are stacked to form a battery assembly such that the layers alternate between anode layers (1) and cathode layers (3), and at least one solid electrolyte layer (2) is positioned between each anode layer (1) and cathode layer (3). In some embodiments, one or more first protrusions (2-1) in the battery assembly are geometrically aligned with anode tabs (1-1) in multiple anode layers (e.g., having the same or similar size and / or shape), and / or one or more second protrusions (2-2) in the battery assembly are geometrically aligned with cathode tabs (3-2) in multiple cathode layers (e.g., having the same or similar size and / or shape). In some embodiments, the anode tab (1-1) or cathode tab (3-2) is located in addition to the anode tab (1-1) and cathode tab (3-2). Figure 1A and Figure 1C In some embodiments, the electrode tabs are located on any side of the battery assembly, including the top or bottom. In some embodiments, the electrode tabs are located at the front or rear of the battery assembly. In some embodiments, the anode tab and the cathode tab are located on the same side. In some embodiments, the anode tab and the cathode tab are located on opposite or adjacent sides of the battery assembly.
[0032] like Figure 3B As representatively shown in FIG. 1 , when the anode tab (1-1) is folded, at least one first protrusion (2-1) of the solid electrolyte (2) on either side of the cathode layer (3) can be folded or arranged or otherwise positioned. The folded or arranged protrusions (2-1) are positioned to separate the anode tab (1-1) from the cathode electrode layer (3), which prevents a short circuit therebetween. As shown in FIG. Figure 3BIt can be seen that when the anode tab (1-1) is folded to contact another anode layer (for example, the anode tab of another anode layer), at least one protrusion (2-1) of the solid electrolyte layer (2) on either side of the cathode layer (3) is positioned between the folded anode tab (1-1) and the cathode layer (3), thereby preventing contact and / or short circuit.
[0033] Also like Figure 4B As shown, in some embodiments, when the cathode tab (3-2) is folded, at least one second protrusion (2-1) of the solid electrolyte (2) on either side of the anode layer (1) can be folded or arranged or otherwise positioned. The folded or arranged second protrusion (2-2) is positioned to separate the cathode tab (3-2) from the anode layer (1), which prevents a short circuit therebetween. Figure 4B It can be seen that when the cathode tab (3-2) is folded to contact another cathode layer (for example, the cathode tab of another cathode layer), at least one protrusion (2-2) of the solid electrolyte layer (2) on either side of the anode layer (1) is positioned between the folded cathode tab (3-2) and the anode layer (1), thereby preventing contact and / or short circuit.
