[0027] Some incontinence underwear is disposable or single-use, so it doesn't require cleaning between uses. However, from an environmental perspective, disposable underwear may be undesirable. Disposable underwear can also be expensive, especially in institutional environments with many users.
[0028] According to some aspects of this disclosure, underwear can be washable, which makes it cheaper over time. Furthermore, because it is washable, underwear generates less waste, which is better for the environment. Additionally, washable underwear can be worn more discreetly or inconspicuously.
[0029] Now for reference Figure 1A The figure shows a front view of an example underwear 100 according to some embodiments. Underwear 100 is a pair of briefs. Underwear 100 is a men's pair of briefs. Underwear 100 is a pair of panties. In some embodiments, underwear 100 may be other types of panties, such as, but not limited to, boxer briefs, short boxer briefs, bikini-style panties, or low-rise panties.
[0030] The underwear 100 includes a main body 110 and an insert 180 that can be placed inside the main body 110. The main body 110 of the underwear 100 has a front portion 112, a back portion 114, a crotch portion 116, and a waistband 126. The back portion 114 is opposite to the front portion 112. Figure 1A As shown, the front portion 112 may include a left front portion 118, a pelvic portion 120, and a right front portion 122. The pelvic portion 120 has a left side and a right side. The left side of the pelvic portion 120 is adjacent to the upper right edge of the left front portion 118. The right side of the pelvic portion 120 is adjacent to the left edge of the right front portion 122. As shown, the pelvic portion 120 is generally convex, that is, it rounds towards the left front portion 118, rounds towards the right front portion 122, and rounds in the direction outside the page, as shown by the outline seam 124.
[0031] Now for reference Figure 1B The figure shows a rear view of the underwear 100. Although the rear portion 114 is shown as a single piece, in some embodiments, the front portion 112 and the rear portion 114 may include more sub-parts. For example, the rear portion 114 may include five sub-parts. In yet another example, the left front portion 118, the rear portion 114, and the right front portion 122 may be a single piece. In some embodiments, the number of sub-parts included in the front portion 112 and the rear portion 114 may affect the dimensional stability of the underwear 100. For example, Figure 1A The underwear can maintain its size stability after at least 100 washes.
[0032] The waistband 126 forms the upper edge of the body 110. Specifically, the upper edges of the front portion 112 and the rear portion 114 are adjacent to the waistband 126. In some embodiments, the front portion 112 and the rear portion 114 may be sewn to the waistband 126. The waistband 126 supports the weight of the underwear 100, especially when the underwear 100 is soiled by liquid. In some embodiments, the waistband 126 is elastic.
[0033] The crotch portion 116 has a front side and a rear side. The front side of the crotch portion is adjacent to the lower right edge of the left front portion 118, the bottom edge of the pelvic portion 120, and the lower left edge of the right front portion 122. The rear side of the crotch portion 116 is adjacent to the bottom edge of the rear portion 114.
[0034] In some embodiments, one or more of the left front portion 118, rear portion 114, right front portion 122, and crotch portion 116 may be formed of breathable fabric, which can make the wearer feel more comfortable. In some embodiments, one or more of the left front portion 118, rear portion 114, right front portion 122, and crotch portion 116 may be biodegradable fabric, which may be more ideal from an environmental perspective. In some embodiments, one or more of the left front portion 118, rear portion 114, right front portion 122, and crotch portion 116 may be breathable and biodegradable fabric, such as, but not limited to, organic bamboo.
[0035] Insert 180 is a washable and absorbent insert. For example... Figure 1A As shown, the insert 180 has a longitudinal axis extending from the top end 182 to the bottom end 184. As shown, the width 186 of the top end 182 may be narrower than the width 188 of the bottom end 184. As shown, the bottom end 184 may be convex, i.e., outwardly rounded. Furthermore, the insert 180 may become rounded in a direction outside the page, as shown by the contour seam 190. The insert 180 may include multiple layers. The absorbency of the insert 180 may depend on the number of layers. In some embodiments, the insert 180 can absorb at least 150 ml.
[0036] Now for reference Figure 4The figure illustrates an example of a multilayer 400 that can be used in insert 180. For example, insert 180 may include insert absorbent layers 404a, 404b (collectively referred to as a plurality of insert absorbent layers 404) located between two insert absorbent layers 402a, 402b. With insert absorbent layers 402a, 402b on either side of insert 180, when at least one of insert absorbent layers 402a, 402b is placed in underwear 100 and underwear 100 is worn, the insert absorbent layers 402a, 402b are close to the wearer. That is, insert 180 is reversible and can be used on either side.
[0037] The insert wicking layers 402a, 402b can be formed of any suitable fabric for drawing liquid toward the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 in one direction, more specifically in directions 408a, 408b. In some embodiments, the insert wicking layers 402a, 402b can be knitted twill fabric. Figure 5B An example illustration of a knitted twill fabric 502 is shown. In some embodiments, the insert wicking layers 402a, 402b may be formed of polyester and spandex. For example, the insert wicking layers 402a, 402b may be 97% polyester and 3% spandex. Other fabric compositions are also possible. In some embodiments, the insert wicking layer may be a polyester and spandex knitted twill fabric.
[0038] In some embodiments, the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 may include two insert absorbent layers 404a and 404b. In other embodiments, the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 may include more than two layers. By stacking the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 together, liquid can be held between the multiple layers within the stack. Therefore, the stack can absorb more liquid than the sum of the individual layers. The plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 can be formed of any suitable fabric for absorbing liquid. In some embodiments, the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 may be a microfiber looped terry fabric. Figure 5C An example illustration of a microfiber looped terry fabric 504 is shown. In some embodiments, the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 may be formed of polyester and nylon. For example, the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404 may be 88% polyester and 12% nylon. Other fabric compositions are also possible. In some embodiments, the insert absorbent layers may be a polyester and nylon microfiber looped terry fabric.
[0039] Now for reference Figure 2AThe figure shows a front view of the interior of the body 110. The pelvic portion 120 includes a pocket 140 for holding an insert therein. The insert can be any absorbent insert, such as a washable absorbent insert 180. That is, the underwear 100 and the multi-layer 400 can be used with a disposable absorbent insert, rather than with a washable absorbent insert 180. Furthermore, the body 110 and the multi-layer 400 can be used with any insert 180.
[0040] Bag 140 is defined by an outer wall 142 and an inner wall 144. The inner wall 144 is adjacent to the outer wall 142. Figure 2B As shown, when the underwear 100 is worn, the inner pocket wall 144 is close to the wearer. The inner pocket wall 144 can hold the insert 180 in place without the need for additional attachment members, such as, but not limited to, adhesives, buttons, clips or other attachment members.
[0041] The bag 140 has a periphery. The bag 140 is surrounded along the periphery. In some embodiments, the inner wall 144 of the bag may be adhered to the outer wall 142 of the bag along the periphery of the bag 140, such as... Figure 2B The enlarged cross-sectional view of bag 140 in Figure 200 is shown.
[0042] The inner wall 144 of the bag has a surface defining a central opening 146. The central opening 146 is sized to allow an insert to be inserted into and removed from the bag 140. The central opening 146 allows liquid to deposit directly into the bag 140. For example, when the insert 180 is placed in the bag 140, liquid such as urine or other bodily fluids can deposit directly onto the insert 180. More specifically, when the insert 180 is in the bag 140, liquid can deposit directly onto the insert wicking layer of the insert 180. That is, when the insert is placed in the underwear 100, the insert wicking layer is close to the inner wall 144 of the bag. When the bag 140 is empty, i.e., when there is no insert in the bag 140, liquid can deposit directly onto the outer wall 142 of the bag.
[0043] The inner wall 144 of the bag can be seamless, which would make the wearer more comfortable when the inner wall 144 comes into contact with the wearer. The inner wall 144 can be formed of multiple waterproof layers bonded together. The multiple waterproof layers of the inner wall 144 can extend across the entire inner wall 144 between the periphery of the bag and the central opening 146.
[0044] The inner wall 144 of the bag can be formed of any suitable fabric to reduce liquid leakage from the inner wall 144, i.e., leakage from the bag 140. Liquid leakage from the inner wall 144 can cause a damp feeling upon contact with the wearer. Multiple waterproof layers of the inner wall 144 may include polyurethane laminates. For example, each waterproof layer may include a polyurethane laminate. Figure 5AAn example illustration of laminate 500 is shown. Each waterproof layer may be at least water-repellent. In some embodiments, one or more waterproof layers may be water-repellent. Furthermore, in some embodiments, one or more waterproof layers may be impermeable.
[0045] The lower portions of the surfaces of the inner wall 144 and the outer wall 142 of the bag can be configured to retain liquid within the bag 140. When the underwear 100 is worn, the lower portion of the bag 140 can be located at the lowest point of the underwear 100. Therefore, when gravity draws the liquid in the underwear 100 downwards, the lowest point can form a liquid collection area. However, the liquid collection area is limited by the bottom edge of the central opening 146, as liquid may overflow from the bottom edge of the central opening 146. Therefore, the lower portions of the surfaces of the inner wall 144 and the outer wall 142 of the bag form a liquid collection area.
[0046] The outer wall of the bag 142 may be absorbent. The outer wall of the bag 142 may include multiple layers. The absorbency of the outer wall of the bag 142 may depend on the number of layers. In some embodiments, the outer wall of the bag 142 may absorb at least 75 ml. Through the insert 180 in the body 110, the underwear may have an absorbency of 225 ml.
[0047] Now for reference Figure 2B The figure shows an enlarged cross-sectional view 200 of the bag 140. The outer wall 142 of the bag may include at least one absorbent core 202, a liner layer 206, and at least one absorbent layer 204 located between the absorbent core 202 and the liner layer 206. The absorbent core 202 is located near the inner wall 144 of the bag. The absorbent core 202 may be formed of any suitable fabric for attracting liquid in one direction, more specifically towards the at least one absorbent layer 204. In some embodiments, the absorbent core 202 may be a knitted twill fabric. Figure 5B An example illustration of a knitted twill fabric 502 is shown. In some embodiments, the core absorber 202 may be formed of polyester and spandex. For example, the core absorber 202 may be 97% polyester and 3% spandex. Other fabric compositions are also possible. In some embodiments, the core absorber 202 may be a polyester and spandex knitted twill fabric. The core absorber 202 may be made of a material similar to or the same as that of the insert core absorbers 402a, 402b.
[0048] In some embodiments, at least one bag absorbent layer 204 may comprise a single layer. A single layer can make the outer wall 142 of the bag lighter and more comfortable. In some embodiments, at least one bag absorbent layer 204 may comprise two layers. In other embodiments, at least one bag absorbent layer 204 may comprise more than two layers. At least one bag absorbent layer 204 may be formed of any suitable fabric for absorbing liquids. In some embodiments, the bag absorbent layer 204 may be a microfiber looped terry fabric. Figure 5CAn example illustration of a microfiber looped terry fabric 504 is shown. In some embodiments, the bag absorbent layer 204 may be formed of polyester and nylon. For example, the bag absorbent layer 204 may be 88% polyester and 12% nylon. Other fabric compositions are also possible. In some embodiments, the bag absorbent layer 204 may be a polyester and nylon microfiber looped terry fabric. At least one bag absorbent layer 204 may be made of a similar or identical material to the plurality of insert absorbent layers 404.
[0049] The bag lining layer 206 is at least waterproof. The bag lining layer 206 can be formed of any suitable fabric to reduce liquid leakage from the outer wall 142 of the bag, i.e., leakage from the bag 140. Liquid leakage from the outer wall 142 of the bag can cause the wearer's clothing to become damp. In some embodiments, the bag lining layer 206 may be formed of multiple waterproof layers bonded together. The multiple waterproof layers of the bag lining layer 206 may include polyurethane laminates. For example, each waterproof layer may include a polyurethane laminate. Figure 5A An example illustration of laminate 500 is shown. Each waterproof layer may be at least water-repellent. In some embodiments, one or more waterproof layers may be water-repellent. Furthermore, in some embodiments, one or more waterproof layers may be impermeable. Other fabric compositions are also possible. In some embodiments, the bag lining layer may be a knitted cotton soft fabric, such as a polyester knitted cotton soft fabric. The bag lining layer 206 may be a material similar to or the same as the bag inner wall 144.
[0050] Now for reference Figure 3A The figure shows a front view of the interior of the body 310 of another example of underwear 300. Similar to body 110, body 310 includes a front portion 312, a back portion, a crotch portion 316, and a waistband 326. The front portion 312 includes a left front portion 318, a pelvic portion 320, and a right front portion 322. Similar to pelvic portion 120, pelvic portion 320 includes a pocket 340 and a central opening 346. Pocket 340 is defined by an inner pocket wall 344 and an outer pocket wall 342. The inner pocket wall 344 has a surface in which the central opening 346 is located.
[0051] Now for reference Figure 3B The figure shows a top view of the insert 380 of the bra 300. Similar to the insert 180, the insert 380 extends from a top end 382 to a bottom end 384. Furthermore, the bottom end 384 may be larger than the top end 382. Although... Figure 3B The illustration shows insert 380 inserted into pocket 340 of bra 300, but other inserts can also be used with body 310. For example, Figure 3C A disposable insert 390 is shown in the pocket 340 of the underwear 300.
[0052] although Figure 1A and Figure 3BExample underwear 100 and 300 are shown, each having a body 110, 310 and inserts 180, 380, respectively; however, in some embodiments, the underwear may be part of a kit. For example, a kit may include multiple inserts 180, 380. As another example, a kit may include at least two inserts 180, 380 so that a soiled insert 180, 380 can be replaced with a clean insert 180, 380 without altering the body 110, 310. This is particularly desirable in institutional environments with multiple users whose underwear may be washed and distributed together.
[0053] In some embodiments, the bodies 110, 310 may have different sizes. Furthermore, the inserts 180, 380 may have different sizes. In some embodiments, the inserts 180, 380 may be used with a variety of body sizes. For example, in some embodiments, the bodies 110, 310 may be provided in small, medium, large, and extra-large sizes, while the inserts 180, 380 may be provided in small and large sizes. Small-sized inserts may be compatible with small and medium sizes, while large-sized inserts may be compatible with large and extra-large sizes. This versatility in insert size is also desirable in institutional environments with multiple users whose underwear may be washed and distributed together, or where users may change sizes.
[0054] Next reference Figure 6A and 6B These figures illustrate example embodiments of two configurations of the underwear 600. In the illustrated embodiments, the body 610 and the insert 680 are provided with a securing mechanism to hold the insert 680 in place when it is located in the body 610 and the underwear 600 is in use.
[0055] In the illustrated embodiment, the fastening mechanism is a snap. In this embodiment, the body 610 has a first member 650 of the fastening mechanism for fastening to the outer wall of the bag. The insert 680 includes a second member 660 of the fastening mechanism for fastening thereto. In the illustrated embodiment, the first member 650 is a disc with a groove, and the second member 660 is a disc with a circular lip configured to engage with the groove of the first member 650. In other embodiments, the first member 650 fastened to the body 610 may be a disc with a circular lip, and the second member 660 may be a disc with a groove.
[0056] Although the illustrated embodiment shows the first member 650 and the second member 660 facing the outer wall of the bag and the top of the insert layer, respectively, the first member 650 and the second member 660 can be positioned in other locations within the bag and the insert layer, as long as they can interact to secure the insert 680 in place when the insert 680 is in the body 610 and the underwear 600 is in use.
[0057] In some embodiments, although only one example is shown in the illustrated embodiment, multiple securing mechanisms may be provided inside the bag and on the insert. For example, two snaps or other securing mechanisms may be provided to secure the insert 680 to the body 610.
[0058] Figure 6B The fixed configuration of the underwear 600 is shown, wherein the first and second components of the fixing mechanism are connected to each other, as shown in 670, to secure the insert 680 to the body 610.
[0059] In other embodiments, other fastening mechanisms may be used, such as Velcro, hooks and latches, conventional buttons and other similar mechanisms.
[0060] The advantage of providing a retaining mechanism for the lingerie disclosed herein is that it minimizes or prevents any displacement of the insert while the lingerie is in use. For example, when the lingerie is in use, gravity may draw liquid downwards from the lingerie, which could also cause displacement of the insert. The retaining mechanism prevents this positional change of the insert, thereby securing it in place while the lingerie is in use.
[0061] While the foregoing description provides examples of embodiments, it should be understood that some features and / or functions of the described embodiments can be modified without departing from the spirit and operating principles. Therefore, the foregoing is intended to illustrate the invention and not limit it, and those skilled in the art will understand that other changes and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. The scope of the claims should not be limited to the preferred embodiments and examples, but should be given the broadest interpretation consistent with the specification as a whole.
