Out-of-body blood circulation

By generating pulsating blood flow with constant rotation within an annular channel and controlling the flow direction using a shut-off valve, the problems of unstable blood flow and unquantifiable shear load in existing technologies are solved, achieving stable and controllable blood circulation testing.

Abstract

The new invention relates to a method and to a corresponding device by means of which a pulsatile blood circulation with a purely layered flow outside the body is generated. No additional shear load is generated through the device. For this purpose, a closed annular channel (12), which is completely filled with blood (2), is rotated in the main plane thereof. A pulsatile blood flow in the same direction is achieved in such a way that a constant rotation of the annular channel (12) is quickly stopped. A laminar flow of blood is generated relative to the channel, which again reaches stationary. By interrupting the annular channel (12) with a blocking device (30), the blood (2) remains stationary relative to the channel even when restarted. The blocking device (30) is only opened again after a constant rotation has been reached, and the process is then cyclically repeated. Combination of the annular channel (12) and the blocking device (30) into one part can achieve a significant reduction in the test structure. Thus, a plurality of samples with small blood volumes can be tested in parallel. The device works as a blood pump when the blood circulation is divided into a movable hose ring (6) with stationary, open hose ends (61) (62) and an external connection (63) thereto.
