An apparatus (50) for coupling an energy storage device (52) in the form of liquefied gas or compressed gas to a user (53) comprises: at least one gas compressor (51, 54) configured to supply compressed gas to a fluid storage system (52, 67, 69) including the energy storage device; an interfacial thermal energy storage device (56) disposed at the inlet and outlet of the fluid storage system and configured to cool gas at the inlet of the fluid storage system and heat gas at the outlet of the fluid storage system; at least one expander (58, 59) coupled to a generator and configured to receive compressed gas from the thermal energy storage device; and a conduit for conveying expanded gas leaving the at least one expander (59) to the user.
